Given a nonlinear, univariate, bounded, and differentiable function $f(x)$, this article develops a sequence of Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) and Linear Programming (LP) relaxations that converge to the graph of $f(x)$ and its convex hull, respectively. Theoretical convergence of the sequence of relaxations to the graph of the function and its convex hull is established. For nonlinear non-convex optimization problems, the relaxations presented in this article can be used to construct tight MILP and LP relaxations. These MILP and the LP relaxations can also be used with MILP-based and spatial branch-and-bound based global optimization algorithms, respectively.

We study linear programming relaxations of nonconvex quadratic programs given by the reformulation-linearization technique (RLT), referred to as RLT relaxations. We investigate the relations between the polyhedral properties of the feasible regions of a quadratic program and its RLT relaxation. We establish various connections between recession directions, boundedness, and vertices of the two feasible regions. Using these properties, we present necessary and sufficient exactness conditions for RLT relaxations. We then give a thorough discussion of how our results can be converted into simple a…
The classic pump scheduling or Optimal Water Flow (OWF) problem for water distribution networks (WDNs) minimizes the cost of power consumption for a given WDN over a fixed time horizon. In its exact form, the OWF is a computationally challenging mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP). It is complicated by nonlinear equality constraints that model network physics, discrete variables that model operational controls, and intertemporal constraints that model changes to storage devices. To address the computational challenges of the OWF, this paper develops tight polyhedral relaxations of the orig…
Disjunctive cutting planes can tighten a relaxation of a mixed-integer linear program. Traditionally, such cuts are obtained by solving a higher-dimensional linear program, whose additional variables cause the procedure to be computationally prohibitive. Adopting a $\mathcal{V}$-polyhedral perspective is a practical alternative that enables the separation of disjunctive cuts via a linear program with only as many variables as the original problem. The drawback is that the classical approach of monoidal strengthening cannot be directly employed without the values of the extra variables appearin…
In this paper, we develop new continuous and discrete relaxations for nonlinear expressions in an MINLP. In contrast to factorable programming, our techniques utilize the inner-function structure by encapsulating it in a polyhedral set, using a technique first proposed in [12]. We tighten the relaxations derived in [33,13] and obtain new relaxations for functions that could not be treated using prior techniques. We develop new discretization-based mixed-integer programming relaxations that yield tighter relaxations than similar relaxations in the literature. These relaxations utilize the simpl…
In this paper, we present a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulation of a piecewise, polyhedral relaxation (PPR) of a multilinear term using its convex hull representation. Based on the solution of the PPR, we also present a MILP formulation whose solutions are feasible for nonconvex, multilinear equations. We then present computational results showing the effectiveness of proposed formulations on instances of standard benchmarks of nonlinear programs (NLPs) with multilinear terms and compare the proposed formulation with a traditional formulation that is built by recursively relaxi…
MINLO (mixed-integer nonlinear optimization) formulations of the disjunction between the origin and a polytope via a binary indicator variable have broad applicability in nonlinear combinatorial optimization, for modeling a fixed cost $c$ associated with carrying out a set of $d$ activities and a convex variable cost function $f$ associated with the levels of the activities. The perspective relaxation is often used to solve such models to optimality in a branch-and-bound context, especially in the context in which $f$ is univariate (e.g., in Markowitz-style portfolio optimization). But such a …
We present a generalization of the notion of neighborliness to non-polyhedral convex cones. Although a definition of neighborliness is available in the non-polyhedral case in the literature, it is fairly restrictive as it requires all the low-dimensional faces to be polyhedral. Our approach is more flexible and includes, for example, the cone of positive-semidefinite matrices as a special case (this cone is not neighborly in general). We term our generalization Terracini convexity due to its conceptual similarity with the conclusion of Terracini's lemma from algebraic geometry. Polyhedral cone…
We study MINLO (mixed-integer nonlinear optimization) formulations of the disjunction $x\in\{0\}\cup[\ell,u]$, where $z$ is a binary indicator of $x\in[\ell,u]$ ($0 \leq \ell <u$), and $y$ "captures" $f(x)$, which is assumed to be convex and positive on its domain $[\ell,u]$, but otherwise $y=0$ when $x=0$. This model is very useful in nonlinear combinatorial optimization, where there is a fixed cost of operating an activity at level $x$ in the operating range $[\ell,u]$, and then there is a further (convex) variable cost $f(x)$. In particular, we study relaxations related to the perspective t…
In this paper, we study the mixed-integer nonlinear set given by a separable quadratic constraint on continuous variables, where each continuous variable is controlled by an additional indicator. This set occurs pervasively in optimization problems with uncertainty and in machine learning. We show that optimization over this set is NP-hard. Despite this negative result, we characterize the structure of the convex hull, and show that it can be formally studied using polyhedral theory. Moreover, we show that although perspective relaxation in the literature for this set fails to match the struct…
Based on Smirnov's decomposition theorem we prove that every rectifiable $1$-current $T$ with finite mass $\mathbb{M}(T)$ and finite mass $\mathbb{M}(\partial T)$ of its boundary $\partial T$ can be approximated in mass by a sequence of rectifiable $1$-currents $T_n$ with polyhedral boundary $\partial T_n$ and $\mathbb{M}(\partial T_n)$ no larger than $\mathbb{M}(\partial T)$. Using this result we can compute the relaxation of the $h$-mass for polyhedral $1$-currents with respect to the joint weak-$\ast$ convergence of currents and their boundaries. We obtain that this relaxation coincides wit…
We investigate new convex relaxations for the pooling problem, a classic nonconvex production planning problem in which input materials are mixed in intermediate pools, with the outputs of these pools further mixed to make output products meeting given attribute percentage requirements. Our relaxations are derived by considering a set which arises from the formulation by considering a single product, a single attibute, and a single pool. The convex hull of the resulting nonconvex set is not polyhedral. We derive valid linear and convex nonlinear inequalities for the convex hull, and demonstrat…
We consider lift-and-project methods for combinatorial optimization problems and focus mostly on those lift-and-project methods which generate polyhedral relaxations of the convex hull of integer solutions. We introduce many new variants of Sherali--Adams and Bienstock--Zuckerberg operators. These new operators fill the spectrum of polyhedral lift-and-project operators in a way which makes all of them more transparent, easier to relate to each other, and easier to analyze. We provide new techniques to analyze the worst-case performances as well as relative strengths of these operators in a uni…

In this paper, we present convex hull formulations for a mixed-integer, multilinear term/function (MIMF) that features products of multiple continuous and binary variables. We develop two equivalent convex relaxations of an MIMF and study their polyhedral properties in their corresponding higher-dimensional spaces. We numerically observe that the proposed formulations consistently perform better than state-of-the-art relaxation approaches.
We describe a convex programming approach to the calculation of lower bounds on the minimum cost of constrained decentralized control problems with nonclassical information structures. The class of problems we consider entail the decentralized output feedback control of a linear time-varying system over a finite horizon, subject to polyhedral constraints on the state and input trajectories, and sparsity constraints on the controller's information structure. As the determination of optimal control policies for such systems is known to be computationally intractable in general, considerable effo…
Our study is motivated by the solution of Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) problems with separable non-convex functions via the Sequential Convex MINLP technique, an iterative method whose main characteristic is that of solving, for bounding purposes, piecewise-convex MINLP relaxations obtained by identifying the intervals in which each univariate function is convex or concave and then relaxing the concave parts with piecewise-linear relaxations of increasing precision. This process requires the introduction of new binary variables for the activation of the intervals where the func…
Combined heat and power dispatch promotes interactions and synergies between electric power systems and district heating systems. However, nonlinear and nonconvex heating flow imposes significant challenges on finding qualified solutions efficiently. Most existing methods rely on constant flow assumptions to derive a linear heating flow model, sacrificing optimality for computational simplicity. This paper proposes a novel convex combined heat and power dispatch model based on model simplification and constraint relaxation, which improves solution quality and avoids assumptions on operating re…
We consider a class of infinite-dimensional optimization problems in which a distributed vector-valued variable should pointwise almost everywhere take values from a given finite set $\mathcal{M}\subset\mathbb{R}^m$. Such hybrid discrete--continuous problems occur in, e.g., topology optimization or medical imaging and are challenging due to their lack of weak lower semicontinuity. To circumvent this difficulty, we introduce as a regularization term a convex integral functional with an integrand that has a polyhedral epigraph with vertices corresponding to the values of $\mathcal{M}$; similar t…
Gradient-based methods have been highly successful for solving a variety of both unconstrained and constrained nonlinear optimization problems. In real-world applications, such as optimal control or machine learning, the necessary function and derivative information may be corrupted by noise, however. Sun and Nocedal have recently proposed a remedy for smooth unconstrained problems by means of a stabilization of the acceptance criterion for computed iterates, which leads to convergence of the iterates of a trust-region method to a region of criticality, Sun and Nocedal (2022). We extend their …
An analysis of mixed integer linear sets based on lattice point free convex sets
在$\max\{π^T x : x \in S \}-\min\{π^T x : x \in S \} \leq 1$的意义上,分裂集$S$具有等于1的最大面宽度。
