We identify the spectral properties of Hawking-Unruh radiation in the eternal black hole at ultra low energies as a probe for the chaotic level statistics of quantum black holes. Level repulsion implies that there are barely Hawking particles with an energy smaller than the level separation. This effect is experimentally accessible by probing the Unruh heat bath with a linear detector. We provide evidence for this effect via explicit and exact calculations in JT gravity building on a radar definition of bulk observables in the model. Similar results are observed for the bath energy density. This universal feature of eternal Hawking radiation should resonate into the evaporating setup.
In this study, the effects of the generalized uncertainty principle on the theory of gravity are analyzed. Inspired by Verlinde's entropic gravity approach and using the modified Unruh temperature, the generalized Einstein field equations with cosmological constant are obtained and corresponding conservation law is investigated. The resulting conservation law of energy-momentum tensor dictates that the generalized Einstein field equations are valid in a very limited range of accelerations. Moreover, the modified Newton's law of gravity and the modified Poisson equation are derived. In a certai…
We study quantum gravity signatures emerging from phenomenologically motivated multiscale models, spectral actions, and Causal Set Theory within the detector approach to the Unruh effect. We show that while the Unruh temperature is unaffected, Lorentz-invariant corrections to the two-point function leave a characteristic fingerprint in the induced emission rate of the accelerated detector. Generically, quantum gravity models exhibiting dynamical dimensional reduction exhibit a suppression of the Unruh rate at high energy while the rate is enhanced in Kaluza-Klein theories with compact extra di…
We revisit the Schwinger effect in de Sitter, anti-de Sitter spaces and charged black holes, and explore the interplay between quantum electrodynamics and the quantum gravity effect at one-loop level. We then advance a thermal interpretation of the Schwinger effect in curved spacetimes. Finally, we show that the Schwinger effect in a near-extremal black hole differs from Hawking radiation of charged particles in a non-extremal black hole and is factorized into those in an anti-de Sitter space and a Rindler space with the surface gravity for acceleration.
Unruh effect is a landmark prediction of standard quantum field theory in which Fock vacuum state appears as a thermal state with respect to an uniformly accelerating observer. Given its dependence on trans-Planckian modes, Unruh effect is often considered as an arena for exploring a candidate theory of quantum gravity. Here we show that Unruh effect disappears if, instead of using Fock quantization, one uses polymer quantization or loop quantization, the quantization method used in loop quantum gravity. Secondly, the polymer vacuum state remains a vacuum state even for the accelerating observ…
The search for a relation among GR, QFT and TFT is the toughest challenge of theoretical physics since Hawking's discovery. The emergence of a temperature in spacetimes with an event horizon has unveiled the existence of a fertile territory, where gravity, thermal and quantum effects are non-trivially connected. Although black holes are the best arena to explore this interplay, evidences for their existence are lacking, suggesting to address less exotic contexts. In this sense, a promising stage is the QFT in curved space: specifically, the Unruh effect (UE) provides the first step toward unif…
We look for classical traces of the Unruh effect in gravity waves. For this purpose, we start considering a white noise state of gravity waves on the surface of a water basin and calculate the two- and four-point functions of the Fourier transform of the surface-height field with respect to accelerated observers. The influence of the basin boundaries and possible deviations from Gaussianity in the white noise state are considered in order to approximate conditions attainable in the laboratory. Eventually, we make the basin infinitely large in order to make contact between our classical results…
We analyse the response and thermal behaviour of an Unruh-DeWitt detector as it travels through cosmological spacetimes, with special reference to the question of how to define surface gravity and temperature in dynamical spacetimes. Working within the quantum field theory on curved spacetime approximation, we consider a detector as it travels along geodesic and accelerated Kodama trajectories in de Sitter and asymptotically de Sitter FLRW spacetimes. By modelling the temperature of the detector using the detailed-balance form of the Kubo--Martin--Schwinger (KMS) conditions as it thermalises, …
The energy of a particle moving on a spacetime, in principle, can affect the background metric. The modifications to it depend on the ratio of energy of the particle and the Planck energy, known as rainbow gravity. Here we find the explicit expressions for the coordinate transformations from rainbow Minkowski spacetime to accelerated frame. The corresponding metric is also obtained which we call as rainbow-Rindler metric. So far we are aware of, no body has done it in a concrete manner. Here this is found from the first principle and hence all the parameters are properly identified. The advant…
If an Unruh-DeWitt detector moves with a uniform acceleration in Fock-space vacuum, then the transition rate of the detector is proportional to the thermal spectrum. It is well known that the transition rate of the detector crucially depends on the two-point function along the detectors trajectory and in order to compute it the standard "$i ε$" regularization is used for Fock space. Numerically, we show here that the regulator $ε$ is generic in polymer quantization, the quantization method used in \emph{loop quantum gravity} with a finite value $ε\approx 2.16$, which leads to non-thermal spect…
The Unruh effect is a quantum relativistic effect where the accelerated observer perceives the vacuum as a thermal state. Here we propose the experimental realization of the Unruh effect for interacting ultracold fermions in optical lattices by a sudden quench resulting in vacuum acceleration with varying interactions strengths in the real temperature background. We observe the inversion of statistics for the low lying excitations in the Wightman function as a result of competition between the spacetime and BCS Bogoliubov transformations. This paper opens up new perspectives for simulators of …
Investigating quantum gravity requires a comprehension of both, general relativity and quantum field theory. Therefore this thesis starts, after a general introduction to the treated topics, with a brief review of the field theoretical aspects of gravity which are relevant for the projects described here, i.e., (i) a study of interacting fixed points for f(R) gravity coupled to matter, (ii) a calculation of the spectral dimension based on a spectral action, (iii) an investigation of the Unruh effect in different quantum gravity models, and (iv) the metric for renormalisation group improved Sch…
If an Unruh-DeWitt detector operates for an infinite proper time along the trajectory of a uniformly accelerated observer in Fock space then induced transition rate of the detector is proportional to Planck distribution. For a realistic detector which operates only for a finite period, the instantaneous transition rate contains both transient and non-transient terms. In particular, the non-transient term contains a residue evaluated at the pole of the two-point function. We show here by considering a massless scalar field that unlike in Fock quantization, the short-distance two-point function …
It was recently advanced the argument that Unruh effect emerges from the study of quantum field theory in quantum space-time. Quantum space-time is identified with the Hilbert space of a new kind of quantum fields, the accelerated fields, which are defined in momentum space. In this work, we argue that the interactions between such fields offer a clear distinction between flat and curved space-times. Free accelerated fields are associated with flat spacetime, while interacting accelerated fields with curved spacetimes. Our intuition that quantum gravity arises via field interactions is verifie…
We discuss $SL(N,\mathbb{C})$ Chern-Simons higher spin gauge theories in Euclidean AdS$_3$. With appropriate boundary term, we derive the higher spin generalization of Schwarzian on-shell action. We investigate gravitationally dressed bi-locals, and we study the soft higher spin mode expansion to obtain soft mode eigenfunctions. We also derive the spin-$s$ eigenfunction from $\mathcal{W}$-Ward identity and a recursion relation. Using the on-shell action, we evaluate the contributions of the soft higher spin modes to the out-of-time-order correlators, and the corresponding Lyapunov exponent of …
Using a definition of the bulk frame within 2d Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, we go into the bulk from the Schwarzian boundary. Including the path integral over the Schwarzian degrees of freedom, we discuss the quantum gravitational Unruh effect and the Planckian black-body spectrum of the thermal atmosphere. We analyze matter entanglement entropy and how the entangling surface should be defined in quantum gravity. Finally, we reanalyze a semi-classical model for black hole evaporation studied in JHEP 1607, 139 (2016) and compute the entanglement between early and late Hawking radiation, illustrat…
We globally embed (3+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-AdS black holes in massive gravity into (5+2)-dimensional flat spacetimes. Making use of embedding coordinates, we directly obtain the generalized Hawking, Unruh and freely falling temperatures in a Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-AdS black hole due to massive graviton effects.
Unruh-DeWitt detector and the interpretation of the horizon temperature in spherically symmetric dynamical space-times

We extend the use of holography to investigate the scrambling properties of various physical systems. Specifically, we consider: (i) non-conformal backgrounds of black $Dp$ branes, (ii) asymptotically Lifshitz black holes, and (iii) black $AdS$ solutions of Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We use the disruption of the entanglement entropy as a probe of the chaotic features of such systems. Our analysis shows that these theories share the same type of behavior as conformal theories as they undergo chaos; however, in the case of Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we find a stark difference in the evolution of the mutua…
We show that the so-called chaos bound, proposed by Maldacena, Shenker, and Stanford, can be violated in $f(T)$ teleparallel gravity. In particular, it is possible to select a new gravitational Lyapunov parameter, controlling chaotization of circular trajectories, in black hole photo-sphere, that can exceed the Maldacena, Shenker and Stanford thermal bound. This feature alters the standard quasi-normal modes and ringdown phase after black hole merging with intriguing implications for future gravitational wave detections and black hole shadow measurements. It is a general characteristic for sev…
We study a dynamic version of the Unruh effect in a two dimensional collapse model forming a black hole. In this two-dimensional collapse model a scalar field coupled to the dilaton gravity, moving leftwards, collapses to form a black hole. There are two sets of asymptotic ($t\to\infty$) observers, around $x\to\infty$ and $x\to-\infty$. The observers at the right null infinity witness a thermal flux of radiation associated with time dependent geometry leading to a black hole formation and its subsequent Hawking evaporation, in an expected manner. We show that even the observers at left null in…
We study quantum chaos of rotating BTZ black holes in Topologically Massive gravity (TMG). We discuss the relationship between chaos parameters including Lyapunov exponents and butterfly velocities from shock wave calculations of out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC) and from pole-skipping analysis. We find a partial match between pole-skipping and the OTOC results in the high temperature regime. We also find that the velocity bound puts a chaos constraint on the gravitational Chern-Simons coupling.
We show that several features of the Jackiw-Teitelboim model are in fact universal properties of two-dimensional Maxwell-dilaton gravity theories with a broad class of asymptotics. These theories satisfy a flow equation with the structure of a dimensionally reduced TTbar deformation, and exhibit chaotic behavior signaled by a maximal Lyapunov exponent. One consequence of our results is a no-go theorem for smooth flows from an asymptotically AdS2 region to a de Sitter fixed point.
In the lack of a full-fledged theory of quantum gravity, I consider free, scalar, quantum fields on curved spacetimes to gain insight into the interaction between quantum and gravitational phenomena. I employ the Unruh-DeWitt detector approach to probe thermal, quantum effects on static, non-globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In this context, all physical observables depend on the choice of a boundary condition that cannot be singled-out, in general, without resorting to an experiment. Notwithstanding, the framework applied admits a large family of (Robin) boundary conditions and grants us physic…
We study out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) of rotating BTZ black holes using two different approaches: the elastic eikonal gravity approximation, and the Chern-Simons formulations of 3-dimensional gravity. Within both methods the OTOC is given as a sum of two contributions, corresponding to left and right moving modes. The contributions have different Lyapunov exponents, $λ_L^{\pm}=\frac{2π}β\frac{1}{1\mp \ell Ω}$, where $Ω$ is the angular velocity and $\ell$ is the AdS radius. Since $λ_L^{-} \leq \frac{2π}β \leq λ_L^{+}$, there is an apparent contradiction with the chaos bound. We discuss…
We present a model for the coupling of non-relativistic quantum systems with a linearized gravitational field from a Lagrangian formulation. The coupling strongly resembles the light-matter interaction models that are known to be well approximated by the Unruh-DeWitt detector model for interactions with quantum fields. We then apply our model to linearized quantum gravity, which allows us to propose a detector based setup that can in principle probe the quantum nature of the gravitational field.
We consider (1+1)-dimensional dilaton gravity with a reflecting dynamical boundary. The boundary cuts off the region of strong coupling and makes our model causally similar to the spherically-symmetric sector of multidimensional gravity. We demonstrate that this model is exactly solvable at the classical level and possesses an on-shell SL(2,R) symmetry. After introducing general classical solution of the model, we study a large subset of soliton solutions. The latter describe reflection of matter waves off the boundary at low energies and formation of black holes at energies above critical. Th…
We discuss the emergence of black hole shadow and photon-sphere in the context of $f(R)$ gravity. It is shown that the shadow is exponentially sensitive to linear instabilities of metric coming from some $f(R)$ solutions. Thus, the instabilities of photon circular trajectories, delimiting the black hole photon-sphere, are double exponentialized. Specifically we individuate two Lyapunov exponents, rather than only one, related to two different sources of chaos in geodesic orbits as a sort of butterfly effect. Such a result violates the black hole chaos bound proposed by Maldacena, Shenker and S…

Quantum chaos can be characterized by an exponential growth of the thermal out-of-time-order four-point function up to a scrambling time $\widehat{u}_*$. We discuss generalizations of this statement for certain higher-point correlation functions. For concreteness, we study the Schwarzian theory of a one-dimensional time reparametrization mode, which describes $AdS_2$ gravity and the low-energy dynamics of the SYK model. We identify a particular set of $2k$-point functions, characterized as being both "maximally braided" and "k-OTO", which exhibit exponential growth until progressively longer t…
Many quantum theories of gravity propose Lorentz violating dispersion relations of the form $ω= |k|\, f(|k|/M)$, with recovery of approximate Lorentz invariance at energy scales much below $M$. We show that a quantum field with this dispersion predicts drastic low energy Lorentz violation in atoms modelled as Unruh-DeWitt detectors, for any $f$ that dips below unity somewhere. As an example, we show that polymer quantization motivated by loop quantum gravity predicts such Lorentz violation below current ion collider rapidities.
We study the asymptotic dynamics of the Mixmaster Universe, near the cosmological singularity, considering $f(R)$ gravity up to a quadratic corrections in the Ricci scalar $R$. The analysis is performed in the scalar-tensor framework and adopting Misner-Chitré-like variables to describe the Mixmaster Universe, whose dynamics resembles asymptotically a billiard-ball in a given domain of the half-Poincaré space. The form of the potential well depends on the spatial curvature of the model and on the particular form of the self-interacting scalar field potential. We demonstrate that the potential …
