Recently it is found that, due to Weyl anomaly, a background scalar field induces a non-trivial Fermi condensation for theories with Yukawa couplings. For simplicity, the paper consider only scalar type Yukawa coupling and, in the BCFT case, only for a specific boundary condition. In these cases, the Weyl anomaly takes on a simple special form. In this paper, we generalize the results to more general situations. First, we obtain general expressions of Weyl anomaly due to a background scalar and pseudo scalar field in general 4d BCFTs. Then, we derive the general form of Fermi condensation from the Weyl anomaly. It is remarkable that, in general, Fermi condensation is non-zero even if there was not a non-vanishing scalar field background. Finally, we verify our results with free BCFT with Yukawa coupling to scalar and pseudo-scalar background potential with general chiral bag boundary condition and with holographic BCFT. In particular, we obtain the shape and curvature dependence of the Fermi condensate from the holographic one point function.
We review our calculation of the Weyl anomaly for d-dimensional conformal field theories that have a description in terms of a (d + 1)-dimensional gravity theory.
Using holographic methods in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion (EMDA) theory, it was conjectured that the thermal diffusion in a strongly coupled metal without quasi-particles saturates an universal lower bound that is associated with the chaotic property of the system at infrared (IR) fixed points~\cite{blake:1705}. In this paper, we investigate the thermal transport and quantum chaos in the EMDA theory with a small Weyl coupling term. It is found that the Weyl coupling correct the thermal diffusion constant $D_Q$ and butterfly velocity $v_B$ in different ways, hence resulting a modified rel…
It is a well-known property of holographic theories that diffeomorphism invariance in the bulk space-time implies Weyl invariance of the dual holographic field theory in the sense that the field theory couples to a conformal class of background metrics. The usual Fefferman-Graham formalism, which provides us with a holographic dictionary between the two theories, breaks explicitly this symmetry by choosing a specific boundary metric and a corresponding specific metric ansatz in the bulk. In this paper, we show that a simple extension of the Fefferman-Graham formalism allows us to sidestep this…
We study a holographic model which exhibits a quantum phase transition from the strongly interacting Weyl semimetal phase to an insulating phase. In the holographic insulating phase there is a hard gap in the real part of frequency dependent diagonal conductivities. However, the anomalous Hall conductivity is nonzero at zero frequency, indicting that it is a Chern insulator. This holographic quantum phase transition is always of first order, signified by a discontinuous anomalous Hall conductivity at the phase transition, in contrast to the very continuous holographic Weyl semimetal/trivial se…
We discuss the stability of the topological invariant of the strongly interacting Weyl semi-metal at finite temperature. We find that if the interactions and temperature of the system are controlled by the holography, the topology is stable even in the case the Fermi surface become fuzzy. We give an argument to show that although the self energy changes the spectral function significantly to make the Fermi surface fuzzy, it cannot change the singularity structure of the Berry phase, which leads to the stability of the topology. We also find that depending on the mass term structure of the ferm…
We study the large source asymptotics of the generating functional in quantum field theory using the holographic renormalization group, and draw comparisons with the asymptotics of the Hopf characteristic function in fractal geometry. Based on the asymptotic behavior, we find a correspondence relating the Weyl anomaly and the fractal dimension of the Euclidean path integral measure. We are led to propose an equivalence between the logarithmic ultraviolet divergence of the Shannon entropy of this measure and the integrated Weyl anomaly, reminiscent of a known relation between logarithmic diverg…
Operators transform anomalously under the symmetry in the presence of quantum anomalies. We study this aspect of the super-Weyl anomaly in $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs), in the context of AdS/CFT. In particular, we carry out holographic renormalization for $(1,1)$ pure AdS$_3$ supergravity that is supposed to be a gravity dual of the $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ SCFT, and derive holographic superconformal Ward identities with corresponding anomalies. We show that the obtained super-Weyl anomaly of the $\mathcal N=(1,1)$ SCFT induces a quantum correction term in the transformat…
Fermi condensation is usually a phenomena of strongly correlated system. In this letter, we point out a novel mechanism for condensation of Dirac fermions due to Weyl anomaly. The condensation has its physical origin in the nontrivial response of the fermion vacuum to changes in the background spacetime (either boundary location or the background metric), and can be felt when a background scalar field is turned on. The scalar field can be, for example, the Higgs field in a fundamental theory or the phonon in condensed matter system. For a spacetime with boundaries, the induced Fermi condensate…
We present effective field theories for the weakly coupled Weyl-$\mathrm{Z}_2$ semimetal, as well as the holographic realization for the strongly coupled case. In both cases, the anomalous systems have both the chiral anomaly and the $\mathrm{Z}_2$ anomaly and possess topological quantum phase transitions from the Weyl-$\mathrm{Z}_2$ semimetal phases to partly or fully topological trivial phases. We find that the topological phase transition is characterized by the anomalous transport parameters, i.e. the anomalous Hall conductivity and the $\mathrm{Z}_2$ anomalous Hall conductivity. These two…
We study the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of a proton-targeted lepton in the presence of gluon condensation using gauge/gravity duality. We use a modified $AdS_5$ background where the modification parameter $c$ corresponds to the gluon condensation in the boundary theory. Firstly, when examining the electromagnetic field, we find that non-zero $c$ can increase the magnitude of the field. Our goal is to find the acceptable value of $c$ for this scattering and our method is based on setting the mass of the proton as an eigenvalue of the baryonic state equations of the DIS to find the acceptab…
We consider the vacuum partition function of a 4d scalar QFT in a curved background as function of bare marginal and relevant couplings. A local UV cutoff $Λ(x)$ transforming under Weyl rescalings allows to construct Weyl invariant kinetic terms including Wilsonian cutoff functions. The local cutoff can be absorbed completely by a rescaling of the metric and the bare couplings. The vacuum partition function satisfies consistency conditions which follow from the Abelian nature of local redefinitions of the cutoff, and which differ from Weyl rescalings. These imply a gradient flow for beta funct…
A Coulomb impurity placed in an undoped Weyl semimetal spontaneously surrounds itself with a cloud of condensed Weyl fermions. We find that the ground-state of this system exhibits an experimentally accessible Landau zero-charge effect: the fermion condensate completely screens out the impurity charge. In a narrow band gap semiconducor this effect manifests itself in the near universality of observable charge of a highly-charged recombination center.
We show how to generalize the previous result of the monopole condensation in SU(2) QCD to SU(3) QCD. We present the gauge independent Weyl symmetric Abelian decomposition of the SU(3) QCD which decomposes the gluons to the color neutral neurons and the colored chromons. The decomposition allows us to separate the gauge invariant and parity conserving monopole background gauge independently, and reduces the non-Abelian gauge symmetry to a discrete color reflection symmetry which is easier to handle. With this we obtain the infra-red finite and gauge invariant integral expression of the one-loo…
A Coulomb impurity placed in an undoped Weyl semimetal spontaneously surrounds itself with a cloud of condensed Weyl fermions. We study this system within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We find that the ground-state of the system is electrically neutral and exhibits an experimentally accessible Landau zero-charge effect: the impurity charge is screened out at any finite distance in the limit of vanishing impurity size. Specifically, we show how in this limit the Thomas-Fermi equation for the electrostatic potential transforms into the Gell-Mann-Low equation for the charge.
We analyse holographic field theory dual to Lovelock Chern-Simons AdS Gravity in higher dimensions using first order formalism. We first find asymptotic symmetries in the AdS sector showing that they consist of local translations, local Lorentz rotations, dilatations and non-Abelian gauge transformations. Then, we compute $1$-point functions of energy-momentum and spin currents in a dual conformal field theory and write Ward identities. We find that the holographic theory possesses Weyl anomaly and also breaks non-Abelian gauge symmetry at the quantum level.
We study the chiral vortical conductivity in a holographic Weyl semimetal model, which describes a topological phase transition from the strongly coupled topologically nontrivial phase to a trivial phase. We focus on the temperature dependence of the chiral vortical conductivity where the mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly plays a crucial role. After a proper renormalization of the chiral vortical conductivity by the anomalous Hall conductivity and temperature squared, we find that at low temperature in both the Weyl semimetal phase and the quantum critical region this renormalized ratio stays …
We present a class of field configurations that are forbidden in the quantum gravity because of inconsistency in the dual field theory from holography. Scale invariant but non-conformal field theories are impossible in (1+1) dimension, and so should be the corresponding gravity dual. In particular, the "spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking" models and the "ghost condensation" models, which are well-studied in phenomenology literatures, are forbidden in any consistent quantum theories of gravity in (1+2) dimension since they predict such inconsistent field configurations.
It was recently discovered that for a boundary system in the presence of a background magnetic field, the quantum fluctuation of the vacuum would create a non-uniform magnetization density for the vacuum and a magnetization current is induced in the vacuum. It was also shown that this "magnetic Casimir effect" of the vacuum is closely related to another quantum effect of the vacuum, the Weyl anomaly. Furthermore, the phenomena can be understood in terms of the holography of the boundary system. In this paper, we generalize this four dimensional effect to six dimensions. We use the AdS/BCFT hol…
We investigate analytically the properties of the Weyl holographic superconductor in the Lifshitz black hole background. We find that the critical temperature of the Weyl superconductor decreases with increasing Lifshitz dynamical exponent, $z$, indicating that condensation becomes difficult. In addition, it is found that the critical temperature and condensation operator could be affected by applying the Weyl coupling, $γ$. Moreover, we compute the critical magnetic field and investigate its dependence on the parameters $γ$ and $z$. Finally, we show numerically that the Weyl coupling paramete…
We construct a holographic model with Weyl corrections in five dimensional spacetime. In particular, we introduce a coupling term between the axion fields and the Maxwell field such that the momentum is relaxed even in the probe limit in this model. We investigate the Drude behavior of the optical conductivity in low frequency region. It is interesting to find that the incoherent part of the conductivity is suppressed with the increase of the axion parameter $k/T$, which is in contrast to other holographic axionic models at finite density. Furthermore, we study the superconductivity associated…
We argue that Horava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity provides the minimal holographic dual for Lifshitz-type field theories with anisotropic scaling and dynamical exponent z. First we show that Lifshitz spacetimes are vacuum solutions of HL gravity, without need for additional matter. Then we perform holographic renormalization of HL gravity, and show how it reproduces the full structure of the z=2 anisotropic Weyl anomaly in dual field theories in 2+1 dimensions, while its minimal relativistic gravity counterpart yields only one of two independent central charges in the anomaly.
We study analytical properties of the Stuckelberg holographic superconductors with Weyl corrections. We obtain the minimum critical temperature as a function of the mass of the scalar field $m^2$. We show that in limit of the $m^2=-3$,$T^{Min}_c\approx0.158047\sqrt[3]ρ$ which is close to the numerical estimate $T_c^{Numerical}\approx 0.170\sqrt[3]ρ$. Further we show that the mass of the scalar field in bounded from below by the $ m^2>m_c^2$ where $m_c^2=-5.40417$. This lower bound is weaker and different from the previous lower bound $m^2=-3$ predicted by stability analysis. We show that in th…
We consider the brane-world in the holographic point of view. Bearing the realistic models in mind, the bulk massless scalar field is introduced. First of all, we find the constraint on the coupling of the scalar fields with the matter(not holographic CFT) on the brane. We show that the traceless part of the energy-momentum tensor of holographic CFT is a part of the bulk Weyl tensor. The trace part which comes from the trace-anomaly is corresponding to the $ρ^2$-term appeared in the generalized FRW equation in the brane-world.
In this paper, we study the logarithmic terms in the partition functions of CFTs with boundaries (BCFTs). In three dimensions, their coefficients give the boundary central charges, which are conjectured to be monotonically decreasing functions under the RG flows. We present a few supporting evidences from field theory calculations. In two dimensions, we give a holographic construction (AdS/BCFT) for an arbitrary shape of boundary and calculate its logarithmic term as well as boundary energy momentum tensors, confirming its consistency with the Weyl anomaly. Moreover, we give perturbative solut…
In this paper we study non-commutative Yang-Mills theory (NCYM) through its gravity dual. First it is shown that the gravity dual of an NCYM with self-dual $θ$-parameters has a Lagrangian in the form of five-dimensional dilatonic gravity. Then we use the de-Boer-Verlinde-Verlinde formalism for holographic renormalization group flows to calculate the coefficient functions in the Weyl anomaly of the NCYM at low energies under the assumption of potential dominance, and show that the $C$-theorem holds true in the present case.
We show how to calculate the effective potential of SU(3) QCD which tells that the true minimum is given by the monopole condensation. To do this we make the gauge independent Weyl symmetric Abelian decomposition of the SU(3) QCD which decomposes the gluons to the color neutral neurons and the colored chromons. In the perturbative regime this decomposes the Feynman diagram in such a way that the conservation of color is explicit. Moreover, this shows the existence of two gluon jets, the neuron jet and chromon jet, which can be verified by experiment. In the non-perturbative regime, the decompo…

Exact holography for cosmological branes in an AdS-Schwarzschild bulk was first introduced in hep-th/0204218. We extend this notion to include all co-dimension one branes moving in non-trivial bulk spacetimes. We use a covariant approach, and show that the bulk Weyl tensor projected on to the brane can always be traded in for "holographic" energy-momentum on the brane. More precisely, a brane moving in a non-maximally symmetric bulk has exactly the same geometry as a brane moving in a maximally symmetric bulk, so long as we include the holographic fields on the brane. This correspondence is ex…
We study the effect of the Weyl corrections on the holographic p-wave dual models in the backgrounds of AdS soliton and AdS black hole via a Maxwell complex vector field model by using the numerical and analytical methods. We find that, in the soliton background, the Weyl corrections do not influence the properties of the holographic p-wave insulator/superconductor phase transition, which is different from that of the Yang-Mills theory. However, in the black hole background, we observe that similar to the Weyl correction effects in the Yang-Mills theory, the higher Weyl corrections make it eas…
We study the effects of momentum relaxation on the holographic Weyl semimetal which exhibits a topological quantum phase transition between the Weyl semimetal phase and a topological trivial phase. The conservation of momentum in the field theory is broken by the axion fields in holography. The topological Weyl semimetal phase is characterized by a nontrivial anomalous Hall conductivity. We find that the critical value of the phase transition decreases when we increase the momentum relaxation strength up to a special value, above which it goes to zero. This indicates that the Weyl semimetal ph…
The holographic principle relates (classical) gravitational waves in the bulk to quantum fluctuations and the Weyl anomaly of a conformal field theory on the boundary (the brane). One can thus argue that linear perturbations in the bulk of static black holes located on the brane be related to the Hawking flux and that (brane-world) black holes are therefore unstable. We try to gain some information on such instability from established knowledge of the Hawking radiation on the brane. In this context, the well-known trace anomaly is used as a measure of both the validity of the holographic pictu…
We study phase transitions driven by fermionic double-trace deformations in gauge-gravity duality. Both the strength of the double trace deformation and the infrared conformal dimension/self-energy scaling of the quasiparticle can be used to decrease the critical temperature to zero, leading to a line of quantum critical points. The self-energy scaling is controlled indirectly through an applied magnetic field and the quantum phase transition naturally involves the condensation of a fermion bilinear which models the spin density wave in an antiferromagnetic state. The nature of the quantum cri…
We study the holographic field theory dual of a probe SU(2) Yang-Mills field in a background $(4+1)$-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space. We find a new ground state when a magnetic component of the gauge field is larger than a critical value. The ground state forms a triangular Abrikosov lattice in the spatial directions perpendicular to the magnetic field. The lattice is composed of superconducting vortices induced by the condensation of a charged vector operator. We perform this calculation both at finite temperature and at zero temperature with a hard wall cutoff dual to a confi…
We approach the problem of constructing an explicit holographic dictionary for the AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence in the context of higher derivative gravitational actions in AdS$_2$ space-times. These actions are obtained by an $S^2$ reduction of four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ Wilsonian effective actions with Weyl squared interactions restricted to constant scalar backgrounds. BPS black hole near-horizon space-times fall into this class of backgrounds, and by identifying the boundary operators dual to the bulk fields, we explicitly show how the Wald entropy of the BPS black hole is holographic…
In four dimensions Weyl fermions possess a chiral anomaly which leads to several special features in the transport phenomena, such as the negative longitudinal magnetoresistivity. In this paper, we study its inverse, the longitudinal magnetoconductivity, in the case of a chiral anomalous system with a background magnetic field B using the linear response method in the hydrodynamic limit and from holography. Our hydrodynamic results show that in general we need to have energy, momentum and charge dissipations to get a finite DC longitudinal magnetoconductivity due to the existence of the chiral…
Scalar QFT on the boundary $\Im^+$ at null infinity of a general asymptotically flat 4D spacetime is constructed using the algebraic approach based on Weyl algebra associated to a BMS-invariant symplectic form. The constructed theory is invariant under a suitable unitary representation of the BMS group with manifest meaning when the fields are interpreted as suitable extensions to $\Im^+$ of massless minimally coupled fields propagating in the bulk. The analysis of the found unitary BMS representation proves that such a field on $\Im^+$ coincides with the natural wave function constructed out …
We perform a mean-field study of the phase diagram of interacting Weyl semimetals with broken parity, that is, with different densities of right- and left-handed quasiparticles. As a simple model system, we consider the Wilson-Dirac Hamiltonian with the chiral chemical potential and on-site repulsive interactions. We find that the chiral chemical potential somewhat shrinks the region of the pion condensation (Aoki phase) in the parameter space of the bare mass and the interaction strength, so that the condensation thresholds are at smaller interaction strengths. The renormalized chiral chemica…
In this paper, we derive the field equations of quartic quasi-topological gravity by varying the action with respect to the metric. Also, we obtain the linearized graviton equations in the AdS background and find that it is governed by a second-order field equation as in the cases of Einstein, Lovelock or cubic quasi-topological gravities. But in contrast to the cubic quasi-topological gravity, the linearized field equation around a black hole has fourth-order radial derivative of the perturbation. Moreover, we analyze the conditions of having ghost free AdS solutions and AdS planar black hole…
For a specific action supporting z=2 Lifshitz geometries we identify the Lifshitz UV completion by solving for the most general solution near the Lifshitz boundary. We identify all the sources as leading components of bulk fields which requires a vielbein formalism. This includes two linear combinations of the bulk gauge field and timelike vielbein where one asymptotes to the boundary timelike vielbein and the other to the boundary gauge field. The geometry induced from the bulk onto the boundary is a novel extension of Newton-Cartan geometry that we call torsional Newton-Cartan (TNC) geometry…

Starting from an ultraviolet fixed point, we study the infrared behavior of quantum Weyl gravity in terms of a functional renormalization group (RG) flow equation. To do so, we employ two classes of Bach-flat backgrounds, namely maximally symmetric spacetimes and Ricci-flat backgrounds in the improved one-loop scheme. We show that in the absence of matter fields and with a topological term included, the effective action exhibits dynamical breaking of scale symmetry. In particular, it is shown that apart from a genuine IR fixed point that is reached at a zero-value of the running scale, the RG …
We consider gauge/gravity correspondence between maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in ($p+1$) dimensions and superstring theory on the near-horizon limit of the D$p$-brane solution. The string-frame metric is AdS$_{p+1}\times S^{8-p}$ times a Weyl factor, and there is no conformal symmetry except for $p=3$. In a previous paper by one of the present authors, the free-field result of gauge theory has been reproduced from string theory for a particular operator which has angular momentum along $S^{8-p}$. In this paper, we extend this result to operators which have angular momenta along A…
