We critically (re)examine the associated production process of a $J/ψ$ meson plus an open charm hadron at the LHC in the proton-proton ($pp$) and proton-lead ($p{\rm Pb}$) collisions. Such a process is very intriguing in the sense of tailoring to explore the double parton structure of nucleons and to determine the geometry of partons in nuclei. In order to interpret the existing $pp$ data with the LHCb detector at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV, we introduce two overlooked mechanisms for the double parton scattering (DPS) and single parton scattering (SPS) processes. Besides the conventional DPS mode, where the two mesons are produced almost independently in the two separate scattering subprocesses, we propose a novel DPS mechanism that the two constituent (heavy) quarks stemming from two hard scatterings can form into a composite particle, like the $J/ψ$ meson, during the hadronization phase. However, it turns out the corresponding contribution is small in $J/ψ+c\bar{c}$ hadroproduction. On the contrary, we point out that the resummation of the initial state logarithms due to gluon splitting into a charm quark pair is crucial to understand the LHCb measurement, which was overlooked in the literature. We perform a proper matching between the perturbative calculations in different initial-quark flavor number schemes, generically referring to the variable flavor number scheme. The new variable flavor number scheme calculation for the process strongly enhance the SPS cross sections, almost closing the discrepancies between theory and experiment. Finally, we present our predictions for the forthcoming LHCb measurement in $p{\rm Pb}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.16$ TeV. Some interesting observables are exploited to set up the control regions of the DPS signal and to probe the impact-parameter dependent parton densities in lead.
I study the direct hadroproduction of Jψassociated with a charm-quark pair at leading order in alpha_S and v in NRQCD. This process provides an interesting signature that could be studied at the Tevatron. I consider both colour-singlet and colour-octet transitions. I compare our results to the fragmentation approximation and discuss the associated experimental signatures.
The production of charm quark jets in association with electroweak gauge bosons at the LHC can be used as a tool to constrain quark parton distribution functions. Motivated by recent measurements at the LHC, we calculate cross sections for W/Z +c, comparing these to W/Z+jet, for various PDF sets. The cross-section differences can be understood in terms of the different underlying PDFs, with the strange quark distribution being particularly important for W +c production. We discuss appropriately defined ratios and comment on how the measurements at the LHC can be used to extract information on …
Charmonium production in association with a forward or backward pion in nucleon-antinucleon annihilation is one of the most promising reaction to access nucleon-to-pion transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) at PANDA. We briefly review the description of this reaction in terms of πN TDAs within the collinear factorization approach and present the first results of dedicated feasibility studies for the PANDA experimental setup.
The production of charm quark jets in association with electroweak gauge bosons at the LHC can be used as a tool to constrain quark parton distribution functions (PDFs). Motivated by recent measurements at the Tevatron and LHC, we calculate cross sections for $W/Z+c$, comparing these to $W/Z+\textrm{jet}$, for various PDF sets. The cross-section differences can be understood in terms of the different underlying PDFs, with the strange quark distribution being particularly important for $W+c$ production. We suggest measurements of appropriately defined ratios and comment on how these measurement…
We discuss charm quark/antiquark and charmed meson production in association with one extra jet (gluon, quark, antiquark) at the LHC. The calculations are performed both in collinear and $k_T$-factorization approaches. Different unintegrated gluon distribution functions are used in the $k_T$-factorization approach. Several predictions for the LHC are presented. We show distributions in rapidity and transverse momenta of $c$/$\bar c$ (or charmed mesons) and the associated jet as well as some two-dimensional observables. Interesting correlation effects are predicted, \textit{e.g.} in azimuthal a…
A second order, $O(α^2_s)$, calculation in perturbative quantum chromodynamics of the two particle inclusive cross section is presented for the reaction $p +\bar{p}\rightarrow γ+ c + X$ for large values of the transverse momentum of the prompt photon and charm quark. The combination of analytic and Monte Carlo integration methods used here to perform phase-space integrations facilitates imposition of photon isolation restrictions and other selections of relevance in experiments. Differential distributions are provided for various observables. Positive correlations in rapidity are predicted.

Theoretical predictions of cross sections and properties of the $J/ψ$-meson production in association with an open charm hadron and formation of two open charm hadrons from two $c\bar{c}$ pairs in the LHC conditions are presented. Processes in both single and in double parton scattering mechanisms are included into consideration. Special attention is paid to the kinematic limits of the LHCb detector for which comparison with the newest experimental data is carried out.
We propose a new method to determine the coupling of the Higgs boson to charm quarks, via Higgs production in association with a charm-tagged jet: $pp\to hc$. As a first estimate, we find that at the LHC with 3000 fb$^{-1}$ it should be possible to derive a constraint of order one, relative to the SM value of the charm Yukawa coupling. As a byproduct of this analysis, we present an estimate of the exclusive $pp \to hD^{(*)}$ electroweak cross section. Within the SM, the latter turns out to be not accessible at the LHC even in the high-luminosity phase.
We review recent results on the production of prompt charmonium in association with a hadron jet or a prompt photon in two-photon collisions at next-to-leading order in the factorization framework of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics.
Measurement of $Z$ bosons produced in association with charm jets $(Zc)$ in proton-proton collisions in the forward region provides a direct probe of a potential non-perturbative (intrinsic) charm component in the proton wave function. We provide a detailed study of the potential to measure $Zc$ production at the LHCb experiment in Runs 2 and 3 of the LHC. The sensitivity to valence-like (sea-like) intrinsic charm is predicted to be $\langle x \rangle_{\rm IC} \gtrsim 0.3\%(1\%)$. The impact of intrinsic charm on Higgs production at the LHC, including $Hc$, is also discussed in detail.
Results of a next-to-leading order calculation of the inclusive cross section for a photon and a heavy quark (charm or bottom), $p \bar p / pp \to γ+Q +X$, are presented. Pointlike photon subprocesses through ${\cal O}(αα_{s}^2)$ and fragmentation subprocesses through ${\cal O}(α_{s}^3)$ are included. The calculation is performed using a phase space slicing technique so that the effects of experimental cuts can be included. Results for the ratios of the charm and bottom cross sections are presented and the systematics of the various subprocesses for both the Tevatron and the LHC are compared a…
At LHCb, proton parton distribution functions (PDFs) can be studied in a unique phase space complementary to that accessible by ATLAS and CMS, corresponding to low and high values of Bjorken-$x$. The measurements of vector boson production in the forward region, with and without an associated jet, are presented. These measurements can be used to constrain the proton PDFs, and in particular, the production of a $Z$ boson in association with a $c$-jet can be studied to measure the intrinsic charm content of the proton.
The hadroproduction of a $W$ boson in association with a charm quark at the Large Hadron Collider is at the centre of current investigations due to its potential to probe the strangeness content of the proton. In this paper we present an implementation of the $W+c$ production process in the PowHel event generator matched to the PYTHIA8 parton shower approach, allowing to obtain predictions for differential cross-sections with NLO QCD accuracy matched to the accuracy of the Shower Monte Carlo event generator. Effects of non-diagonal CKM matrix elements, finite charm quark mass and off-shell $W$…
Experimentally probing the charm-Yukawa coupling in the LHC experiments is important, but very challenging due to an enormous QCD background. We study a new channel that can be used to search for the Higgs decay $H\to c\bar c$, using the vector boson fusion (VBF) mechanism with an associated photon. In addition to suppressing the QCD background, the photon gives an effective trigger handle. We discuss the trigger implications of this final state that can be utilized in ATLAS and CMS. We propose a novel search strategy for $H\to c\bar c$ in association with VBF jets and a photon, where we find …
Because of its forward coverage, LHCb can probe the valence quark distributions of protons and nuclei at small and large Bjorken-x with high precision. This proceeding presents new LHCb measurements of Z boson production in association with charm jet in the forward region of proton-proton collisions and Z boson production in proton-lead collisions. Z+charm jet production could be sensitive to a valence-like intrinsic-charm component in the proton wave function. The measurements of Z production in proton-lead collisions provide new constraints on the partonic structure of nucleons inside nuclei…
We investigate the inclusive emission in unpolarized proton collisions of a charm-flavored hadron in association with a Higgs boson, featuring large transverse momenta and produced with a large rapidity distance. Taking advantage of a narrow timing coincidence between the ATLAS detector and the future FPF ones, we study the behavior of cross sections and azimuthal correlations for ultraforward rapidities of the detected hadron. We provide evidence that the hybrid high-energy and collinear factorization, encoding the BFKL resummation of large energy logarithms and supplemented by collinear dens…
Higgs boson production in association with a charm-quark jet proceeds through two different mechanisms - one that involves the charm Yukawa coupling and the other that involves direct Higgs coupling to gluons. The interference of the two contributions requires a helicity flip and, therefore, cannot be computed with massless charm quarks. In this paper, we consider QCD corrections to the interference contribution starting from charm-gluon collisions with massive charm quarks and taking the massless limit, $m_c \to 0$. The behavior of QCD cross sections in that limit differs from expectations ba…
We consider the production of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ mesons originating from the decays of $b$-flavored hadrons at the LHC using the $k_T$-factorization approach. Our analysis covers both inclusive charmonia production and production of $J/ψ$ mesons in association with $Z$ bosons. We apply the transverse momentum dependent (or unintegrated) gluon density in a proton derived from Catani-Ciafaloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) evolution equation and adopt fragmentation functions based on the non-relativistic QCD factorization to describe the inclusive $b$-hadron decays into the different charmonium state…
We present a phenomenological study of the associated production of a prompt photon and a heavy quark jet (charm or bottom) in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. This channel allows for estimating the amount of energy loss experienced by the charm and bottom quarks propagating in the dense QCD medium produced in those collisions. Calculations are carried out at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy using the BDMPS-Z heavy-quark quenching weights. The quenching of the single heavy-quark jet spectrum reflects fairly the hierarchy in the heavy quark energy loss assumed in the perturbative calculation. O…
We present an improved determination of the strange quark and anti-quark parton distribution functions of the proton by means of a global QCD analysis that takes into account a comprehensive set of strangeness-sensitive measurements: charm-tagged cross sections for fixed-target neutrino-nucleus deep-inelastic scattering, and cross sections for inclusive gauge-boson production and $W$-boson production in association with light jets or charm quarks at hadron colliders. Our analysis is accurate to next-to-next-to leading order in perturbative QCD where available, and specifically includes charm-q…
The production of the lightest Higgs boson, $h^0$, in association with the lightest stop, $\tilde{t}_{1}$, in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, is an interesting channel, as its cross section can be higher than Higgs production in association with top quarks. Furthermore, the $\tilde{t}_{1}\tilde{t}^{*}_{1}h^{0}$ production rate is highly dependent on various Supersymmetric parameters. The mass, mixings, couplings and production cross sections relevant to the $\tilde{t}_{1}\tilde{t}^{*}_{1}h^{0}$ channel have been studied in the past. Here, we complement these analyses by performing a…
We calculate cross-sections and cross-section ratios of a charm quark production in association with a $W$ gauge boson at next-to-leading order QCD using MadGraph and CT10NNLO, CT14NNLO, and MSTW2008NNLO PDFs. We compare the results with measurements from the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 7TeV. Moreover, we calculate absolute and normalized differential cross-sections as well as differential cross-section ratios as a function of the lepton pseudorapidity from the $W$ boson decay. The correlation between the CT14NNLO PDFs and predictions for $W+$ charm data are studied a…
The large rate of the $J/ψ+η_c$ production observed by the Belle collaboration has posed a serious challenge to our understanding of the quarkonium. We examine a scenario that there exists a light scalar boson around 5 GeV, with an enhanced coupling solely to the charm quark. Such a scenario would explain the Belle anomaly. It also predicts a significant increase in $J/ψ$ plus open charm pair production. An immediate test for the scalar boson is to look for a peak around 5 GeV in the recoil mass spectrum of $J/ψ$, because the scalar boson can also be produced in association with the $J/ψ$. Fin…
This paper addresses the issue of production of charm or bottom quarks in association with a high pT process in hadron hadron collision. These quarks can be produced either as part of the hard scattering process or as a remnant from the structure functions. The latter sums terms of the type (alpha_s log(pT/mq))^n. If structure functions of charm or bottom quarks are used together with a hard process which also allows production of these quarks double counting occurs. This paper describes the correct procedure and provides two examples of its implimentation in single top and Drell-Yan at the LH…
In these proceedings, we highlight some aspects of the recent computation of NNLO QCD corrections for W production in association with a charm jet at the LHC. The results are presented in the form of cross sections and differential distributions and are compared to ATLAS data.
We calculate the cross section of J/psi inclusive production in lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering via the weak charged current within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. The hadronic system produced in association with the J/psi meson can be of light-quark origin or contain charm. We take into account both direct production and feed-down from directly-produced heavier charmonia. We provide the cross sections of all contributing partonic subprocesses in analytic form. We present theoretical predictions for the J/psi transverse-momentum and rapidity dist…
We study the production of a prompt J/psi meson in association with a prompt photon in ep deep-inelastic scattering within the factorisation formalism of non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) and demonstrate that this process provides a clean probe of the colour-octet mechanism at DESY HERA. Our analysis is based on an updated set of non-perturbative NRQCD matrix elements obtained through a joint fit to data on charmonium inclusive hadroproduction from runs I and II at the Fermilab Tevatron.
Higgs production in association with a photon at hadron colliders is a rare process, not yet observed at the LHC. We show that this process is sensitive to significant deviations of Higgs couplings to first and second generation SM quarks (particularly the up-type) from their SM values, and use a multivariate neural network analysis to derive the prospects of the High Luminosity LHC to probe deviations in the up and charm Higgs Yukawa couplings through $h + γ$ production.
We study the photoproduction of a D^{*+-} meson in association with a hadron jet at next-to-leading order in the parton model of QCD with non-perturbative fragmentation functions extracted from LEP1 data of e^+e^- annihilation. The transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions recently measured at DESY HERA in various kinematic ranges nicely agree with our theoretical predictions. This provides a useful test of the universality and the scaling violations of the fragmentation functions predicted by the factorization theorem. These comparisons also illustrate the significance of the charm compo…
In the framework of the k_T-factorization approach, the production of prompt photons in association with a heavy (charm or beauty) quarks at high energies is studied. The consideration is based on the O(αα_s^2) off-shell amplitudes of gluon-gluon fusion and quark-(anti)quark interaction subprocesses. The unintegrated parton densities in a proton are determined using the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription. Our numerical predictions are compared with the D0 and CDF experimental data. Also we extend our results to LHC energies.
Direct photon production in association with a heavy quark can serve as an excellent tool for the study of the heavy quark distributions. Currently it is believed that heavy quarks are produced radiatively inside the nucleon, and so there is no need to take into account heavy quark parameters inside global PDF analyses. Certain models taking into account the possibility of an intrinsic charm component exist. Here we present how these affect the γ+ c cross section. While at pA collisions the potential of this process to constrain the gluon nuclear PDF which is currently largely unconstrained is…
We propose a new method to discover light top squarks (stops) in the co-annihilation region at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The bino-like neutralino is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) and the lighter stop is the next-to-LSP. Such scenarios can be consistent with electroweak baryogenesis and also with dark matter constraints. We consider the production of two stops in association with two b-quarks, including pure QCD as well as mixed electroweak-QCD contributions. The stops decay into a charm quark and the LSP. For a higgsino-like light chargino the electroweak contributions can …
Precision measurements of heavy-flavor hadroproduction at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have the ability to probe heavy-flavor parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton. Sensitivity of inclusive $B^\pm$ meson production cross section measurements at LHCb 13 TeV to the bottom-quark PDF is illustrated by using theory predictions obtained with a the S-ACOT-MPS general mass variable flavor number (GMVFN) scheme within the QCD factorization formula. This approach can easily be extended to other heavy-flavor production processes, such as $Z$ boson production in association with a bottom- …
In the framework of the kt-factorization approach, the production of prompt photons in association with a heavy (charm or beauty) quarks at high energies is studied. The consideration is based on the O(αα_s^2) off-shell amplitudes of gluon-gluon fusion and quark-(anti)quark interaction subprocesses. The unintegrated parton densities in a proton are determined using the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription. The analysis covers the total and differential cross sections and extends to specific angular correlations between the produced prompt photons and muons originating from the semileptonic decays…
