We calculate cross-sections and cross-section ratios of a charm quark production in association with a $W$ gauge boson at next-to-leading order QCD using MadGraph and CT10NNLO, CT14NNLO, and MSTW2008NNLO PDFs. We compare the results with measurements from the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 7TeV. Moreover, we calculate absolute and normalized differential cross-sections as well as differential cross-section ratios as a function of the lepton pseudorapidity from the $W$ boson decay. The correlation between the CT14NNLO PDFs and predictions for $W+$ charm data are studied as well. Furthermore, by employing the error PDF updating method proposed by the CTEQ-TEA group, we update CT14NNLO PDFs, and analyze the impact of CMS 7TeV $W+$ charm production data to the original CT14NNLO PDFs. By comparison of the $g(x,Q)$, $s(x,Q)$, $u(x,Q)$, $d(x,Q)$, $\bar u(x,Q)$, and $\bar d(x,Q)$ PDFs at $Q=1.3$ GeV and $Q = 100$ GeV for the CT14NNLO and CT14NNLO+Wc, we see that the error band of the $s(x,Q)$ PDF is reduced in the region $x<0.4$, and the error band of $g(x,Q)$ PDF is also slightly reduced in the region $0.01 < x < 0.1$.
The CMS measurement of dijet pseudorapidity distributions in pPb versus pp collisions at 5.02 TeV provides a direct probe on nuclear gluon PDFs. We show that while the predicted pPb pseudorapidity distributions suffer from sizable free-proton PDF uncertainties, the ratios of the pPb and pp distributions are practically insensitive to scale and free-proton PDF choices. We find the CMS data on pPb to pp ratios to be in good agreement with the EPPS16 nuclear modifications. Using a non-quadratic extension of the Hessian PDF reweighting method, we study the impact of these data on the EPPS16 nuclea…
We have performed the first comprehensive global QCD analysis including the CCFR and NuTeV di-muon data; this data provides strong constraints on the strange quark PDF.
We quantify the impact of LHC dijet production measurements on the nNNPDF2.0 nuclear PDFs in twofold. First, from a proton baseline based on NNPDF3.1 and augmented by pp dijet production measurements from ATLAS and CMS at 7 and 8 TeV. Second, from a new nNNPDF2.0 global analysis including the ratio of pPb to pp dijet spectra from CMS at 5 TeV. We show that as opposed to the CMS at 5 TeV absolute pp and pPb dijet spectra, the pPb/pp ratio is well described in a nPDFs fit and provides strong constraints on the gluon of lead.
We investigate the variation in the MMHT2014 PDFs when we allow the heavy quark masses $m_c$ and $m_b$ to vary away from their default values. We make PDF sets available in steps of $Δm_c =0.05~{\rm GeV}$ and $Δm_b =0.25~{\rm GeV}$, and present the variation in the PDFs and in the predictions. We examine the comparison to the HERA data on charm and beauty structure functions and note that in each case the heavy quark data, and the inclusive data, have a slight preference for lower masses than our default values. We provide PDF sets with 3 and 4 active quark flavours, as well as the standard va…
In this QCD analysis, we investigate the impact of recent measurements of heavy-flavor charm and beauty cross sections data sets on the simultaneous determination of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) and the strong coupling, $α_s(M^2_Z)$. We perform three different fits based on Variable-Flavour Number Scheme (VFNS) at the Leading Order (LO) and Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) and choose the full HERA run I and II combined data as a new measurement of inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) cross sections for our base data set. We show that including charm and beauty cross sections data reduc…
We discuss the implications of the preliminary CMS dijet data from 5.02 TeV pp and pPb collisions for gluon PDFs of the proton and nuclei. The preliminary pp data show a discrepancy with NLO predictions using for example the CT14 PDFs. We find that this difference cannot be accommodated within the associated scale uncertainties and debate the possible changes needed in the gluon PDF. A similar discrepancy is found between the CMS pPb data and NLO predictions e.g. with the EPPS16 nuclear modifications imposed on the CT14 proton PDFs. When a nuclear modification ratio of the pp and pPb data is c…
By applying the Error PDF Updating Method, we analyze the impact of the absolute and normalized single differential cross-sections for top-quark pair production data from the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}= 8$ TeV, on the CT14HERA2 PDFs. We find that the top quark pair single differential distributions provide minor constraints on the CT14HERA2 gluon PDF when the nominal CT14HERA2 inclusive jet production data are included in the fit. Larger constraints on the gluon distribution are present when the jet data are removed (CT14HERA…
The production of charm quark jets in association with electroweak gauge bosons at the LHC can be used as a tool to constrain quark parton distribution functions (PDFs). Motivated by recent measurements at the Tevatron and LHC, we calculate cross sections for $W/Z+c$, comparing these to $W/Z+\textrm{jet}$, for various PDF sets. The cross-section differences can be understood in terms of the different underlying PDFs, with the strange quark distribution being particularly important for $W+c$ production. We suggest measurements of appropriately defined ratios and comment on how these measurement…
The parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton are one of the essential ingredients to describe physics processes at hadron colliders. The Z boson production data at the LHC have a potential to constrain PDFs, especially the gluon distribution. In this study the CMS measurement of the inclusive double differential Z boson production cross section in terms of transverse momentum and rapidity are compared to the next-to-leading order theory predictions at the center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 19.71 inverse femtobarns. In addition, the sensitivity of …
Hessian PDF reweighting, or "profiling", has become a widely used way to study the impact of a new data set on parton distribution functions (PDFs) with Hessian error sets. The available implementations of this method have resorted to a perfectly quadratic approximation of the initial $χ^2$ function before inclusion of the new data. We demonstrate how one can take into account the first non-quadratic components of the original fit in the reweighting, provided that the necessary information is available. We then apply this method to the CMS measurement of dijet pseudorapidity spectra in proton-…
We present an updated global analysis of collinearly factorized nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs) at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. In comparison to our previous fit, EPPS16, the present analysis includes more data from proton-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider: 5TeV double-differential CMS dijet and LHCb D-meson data, as well as 8TeV CMS W$^\pm$ data. These new data lead to significantly better-constrained gluon distributions at small and intermediate values of the momentum fraction $x$, confirming the presence of shadowing and antishadowing for gluons in larg…
Modern parton distribution function fits require an accurate treatment of heavy quark mass effects. In this contribution, we discuss how the FONLL general-mass variable flavour number scheme can be extended to allow for the possibility of a fitted charm PDF. We present a first estimate of the impact of a fitted charm contribution in the FONLL structure functions, and we discuss the development towards including a fitted charm PDF in the NNPDF framework.
We consider the role of the charm mass in PDF fits, and in particular the reliability of recent determinations of the MSbar running mass from fits to inclusive charm production data. We explain how the use of the pole mass, with a charm PDF determined empirically, can reduce PDF uncertainties from charm mass effects, and thereby lead to more reliable predictions for hard processes at the LHC.
The possibility of a (sizable) nonperturbative contribution to the charm parton distribution function (PDF) in a nucleon is investigated together with theoretical issues arising in its interpretation. Results from the global PDF analysis are presented. The separation of the universal component of the nonperturbative charm from the rest of the radiative contributions is discussed and the potential impact of a nonperturbative charm PDF on LHC scattering processes is illustrated. An estimate of nonperturbative charm magnitude in the CT14 and CT14HERA2 global QCD analyses at the next-to-next-to le…
We present an unbiased determination of the charm content of the proton, in which the charm parton distribution function (PDF) is parametrized on the same footing as the light quarks and the gluon in a global PDF analysis. This determination relies on the calculation of deep-inelastic structure functions in the FONLL scheme, generalized to account for massive charm-initiated contributions. In contrast to the usual situation in which the charm PDF is assumed to be generated perturbatively by pair radiation off gluons and light quarks, vanishing at a scale set by the value of the charm mass m_c,…
We investigate the possibility of a (sizable) nonperturbative contribution to the charm parton distribution function (PDF) in a nucleon, theoretical issues arising in its interpretation, and its potential impact on LHC scattering processes. The "fitted charm" PDF obtained in various QCD analyses contains a process-dependent component that is partly traced to power-suppressed radiative contributions in DIS and is generally different at the LHC. We discuss separation of the universal component of the nonperturbative charm from the rest of the radiative contributions and estimate its magnitude in…
We reexamine the shapes of the strange quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton by means of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) analysis of {\hera} deep inelastic scattering cross section measurement at DESY, and inclusive gauge boson production and $W$ boson production associated with a charm quark from LHC at CERN. We find that there is an overall agreement on the strange quark distributions obtained from CMS $W$ + charm and ATLAS $W/Z$ data at the parton momentum fraction range $x \lesssim 10^{-2}$. Meanwhile, there is also a strong tension between these data towards large $x$. We …
We present predictions for the inclusive production of charm jets in proton-proton collisions at 2.76 and 5.02 TeV. The charm-quark is considered massless. In this scheme we find that the ratio of the next-to-leading order to the leading order cross section (K factor) is almost equal to one depending essentially on the choice of the renormalization and factorization scale. Adding non-pertubative corrections obtained from Pythia Monte Carlo calculations lead to reasonable agreement with experimental c-jet cross sections obtained by the CMS collaboration.
We study charm production in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) using the xFitter framework. Recent results from the LHC have focused renewed attention on the determination of the strange-quark parton distribution function (PDF) and the DIS charm process provides important complementary constraints on this quantity. We examine the current PDF uncertainty, and use LHeC pseudodata to estimate the potential improvement from this proposed facility. As xFitter implements both fixed-flavor- and variable-flavor-number schemes, we can compare the impact of these different theoretical choi…
A detailed study of the impact of the data collected by the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) on the parton distribution function (PDF) of the charm quark is presented. The analysis is performed in the NNPDF framework, and the charm PDF is freely parametrized on equal footing as light quark and gluon distributions. We find that variations in the treatment of EMC data do not modify the charm PDF and do not affect our previous conclusion on the presence of an intrinsic component in the charm PDF.
Our community has to apply {\em non}-perturbative QCD on different levels of flavor dynamics in strange, charm \& beauty hadrons and even for top quarks. We need {\em consistent} parameterization of the CKM matrix and describe weak decays of beauty hadrons with {\em many-body} final states. It is crucial to use the {\em Wilsonian} OPE as much as possible and discuss "duality" in the worlds of quarks and hadrons. The pole mass of heavy quarks is {\em not} well-defined on the {\em non}-perturbative level -- i.e., it is {\em not} Borel summable in total QCD. We need a novel team to combine the st…
Recent results on cross sections sensitive to the parton distribution functions (PDFs) within the proton from the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations are presented. The potential impact on the inclusion of these data in fits to the PDFs is discussed. Recent results from fits including the data from jet, or vector boson production from the ATLAS and CMS experiments are discussed.
The production of charm quark jets in association with electroweak gauge bosons at the LHC can be used as a tool to constrain quark parton distribution functions. Motivated by recent measurements at the LHC, we calculate cross sections for W/Z +c, comparing these to W/Z+jet, for various PDF sets. The cross-section differences can be understood in terms of the different underlying PDFs, with the strange quark distribution being particularly important for W +c production. We discuss appropriately defined ratios and comment on how the measurements at the LHC can be used to extract information on …
We present a detailed investigation on the intrinsic charm content in a light meson within the 't Hooft model, namely, the two-dimensional QCD in large $N_c$ limit. The intrinsic charm parton distribution function (PDF) of a light meson, which first arises at order $N_c^{-1}$, is explicitly expressed in terms of the 't Hooft wave functions of the light meson and an infinite towers of excited charmed mesons. We also derive the functional forms from the two-dimensional counterparts of the meson cloud model (MCM) and Brodsky-Hoyer-Peterson-Sakai (BHPS) model. We then make a quantitative compariso…
We discuss the new constraints on gluon parton distribution function (PDF) in lead nucleus, derivable with the Hessian PDF reweighting method from the 5.02 TeV p+Pb measurements of dijet (CMS) and $D^0$-meson (LHCb) nuclear modification ratios. The impact is found to be significant, placing stringent constraints in the mid- and previously unconstrained small-$x$ regions. The CMS dijet data confirm the existence of gluon anti-shadowing and the onset of small-$x$ shadowing, as well as reduce the gluon PDF uncertainties in the larger-$x$ region. The gluon constraints from the LHCb $D^0$ data, rea…
As part of a recent analysis of exclusive two-photon production of W+ W- pairs at the LHC, the CMS experiment used di-lepton data to obtain an "effective" photon-photon luminosity. We show how the CMS analysis on their 8 TeV data, along with some assumptions about the likelihood for events in which the proton breaks up to pass the selection criteria, can be used to significantly constrain the photon parton distribution functions, such as those from the CTEQ, MRST, and NNPDF collaborations. We compare the data with predictions using these photon distributions, as well as the new LUXqed photon d…
We present predictions for the inclusive production of charm jets in proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV. Several CTEQ parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the CTEQ6.6M type are employed, where two of the CTEQ6.6 PDFs have intrinsic charm. At large enough jet transverse momentum and large jet rapidity, the intrinsic charm content can be tested.
The HERAPDF1.0 PDF set, which was an NLO QCD analysis based on H1 and ZEUS combined inclusive cross section data from HERA-I, has been updated to HERAPDF1.5 by including preliminary inclusive cross section data from HERA-II running. Studies have also been made by adding various other HERA data sets: combined charm data, combined low energy run data and H1 and ZEUS jet data. These data give information on the treatment of charm and the charm quark mass and on the value of $α_s(M_Z)$. The PDF analysis has also been extended to NNLO. The PDFs give a good description of Tevatron and early LHC data…
Nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) can be determined in a global QCD analysis using a wide range of experimental data. In addition to older fixed-target deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production data, several analyses from p+Pb collisions at the LHC provide further constraints and extend the kinematic reach of applicable data. Here we present an update of our previous TUJU19 analysis where we now include also electroweak-boson production data recently measured by ATLAS and CMS. For the first time, LHC data are included in a nPDF analysis performed at next-to-n…
Charged current DIS charm production measures the strange-quark PDF. A complete analysis requires both a fully differential theoretical calculation, and a Monte Carlo detector simulation. We present analytic and numeric results at NLO suitable for experimental analysis.
The process $pp \to W^-c$ produces polarized charm quarks. The polarization is expected to be partly retained in $Λ_c$ baryons when those form in the $c$-quark hadronization. We argue that it will likely be possible for ATLAS and CMS to measure the $Λ_c$ polarization in the $W$+$c$ samples in Run 2 of the LHC. This can become the first measurement ever of a longitudinal polarization of charm quarks. Its results will provide a unique input to the understanding of polarization transfer in fragmentation. They will also allow applying the same measurement technique to other (e.g., new physics) sam…
A determination of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) from a global fit to a dataset including measurements from the LHC has been performed. The determinations have been carried out according to the NNPDF methodology, leading to a fit minimising parametrisation bias and with an accurate account of PDF uncertainty. In this thesis the importance of QCD measurements at the LHC to PDF extraction are discussed, and we summarise some of the technical difficulties in their inclusion into PDF fits. A number of methods are presented that permit the efficient inclusion of these observables into PDF de…
We consider the effect on LHC jet cross sections on partons distribution functions (PDFs), in particular the MSTW2008 set of PDFs. We first compare the published inclusive jet data to the predictions using MSTW2008, finding a very good description. We also use the parton distribution reweighting procedure to estimate the impact of these new data on the PDFs, finding that the combined ATLAS 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV data, and CMS 7 TeV data have some significant impact. We then also investigate the impact of ATLAS, CMS and D0 dijet data using the same techniques. In this case we investigate the effect…
We compare the rapidity, $y$, and the beam energy, $\sqrt{s}$, behaviours of the cross section of the data for $D$ meson production in the forward direction that were measured by the LHCb collaboration. We describe the observed cross sections using NLO perturbative QCD, and choose the optimal factorization scale for the LO contribution which provides the resummation of the large double logarithms. We emphasize the inconsistency observed in the $y$ and $\sqrt{s}$ behaviours of the $D$ meson cross sections. The $y$ behaviour indicates a very {\it flat} $x$ dependence of the gluon PDF in the unex…
We present the results of a PDF fit to differential top quark production within the MMHT framework. We in particular consider ATLAS data in the lepton + jet and dilepton channels and CMS data in the lepton + jet channel, at 8 TeV. While the fit quality to the ATLAS dilepton data is good, for the CMS case we see some issues in achieving a good fit quality for certain distributions. However, we focus on the ATLAS lepton + jet data, for which correlations of the statistical and systematic errors are provided across the four relevant distributions for PDF determination, namely $p_T^t$, $M_{tt}$, $…
We investigate charm production in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) using the xFitter program. xFitter is an open-source software framework for the determination of PDFs and the analysis of QCD physics, and has been used for a variety of LHC studies. The study of charged current DIS charm production provides an important perspective on the strange quark PDF, s(x). We make use of the xFitter tools to study the present s(x) constraints, and then use LHeC pseudodata to infer how these might improve. Furthermore, as xFitter implements both Fixed Flavor and Variable Flavor number sch…
We report the measurements of the prompt and non-prompt J/ψ and ψ(2S) nuclear modification factors (RAA) using pp and PbPb data and the RpPb using pPb data collected by CMS at the LHC. All measurements were performed via the di-muon decay channel. The RAA analysis is based on PbPb and pp data samples collected at 5.02 TeV in 2015, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 464 μb-1 and 28 pb-1. These measurements are performed in the di-muon rapidity range of |y| < 2.4 as a function of centrality, rapidity, and transverse momentum (pT) from pT = 3 GeV/c in the most forward region and up to 50…
The recent measurement of the differential $ γ+c $-jet cross section, performed at the Tevatron collider in Run II by the D0 collaboration, is studied in a next-to-leading order (NLO) global QCD analysis to assess its impact on the proton parton distribution functions (PDFs). We show that these data lead to a significant change on the gluon and charm quark distributions. We demonstrate also that there is an inconsistency between the new high precision HERA I+II combined data and Tevatron measurement. Moreover, in this study we investigate the impact of older EMC measurements of charm structure…
We discuss recent CTEQ-TEA group activities after the publication of the CT18 global analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton. In particular, we discuss a new calculation for the photon content in the proton, termed as CT18lux and CT18qed PDFs, and the impact of novel charm- and bottom-quark production cross section measurements at HERA on the CT18 global analysis.
Measurements of the $W$ boson mass are planned by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, but for the time being, these may be unable to compete with the current world average precision of 15~MeV, due to uncertainties in the PDFs. We discuss the potential of a measurement by the LHCb experiment based on the charged lepton transverse momentum $p_T^{\ell}$ spectrum in $W \to μν$ decays. The unique forward acceptance of LHCb means that the PDF uncertainties would be anti-correlated with those of $p_T^{\ell}$ based measurements by ATLAS and CMS. We compute an average of ATLAS, CMS and LHCb measurements of …
Production of electroweak bosons, heavy quarks and jets in proton-proton collisions probe different aspects of QCD and are sensitive to the details of proton structure, expressed by parton distribution functions (PDFs). Precise measurements of cross sections of these processes are used by the CMS experiment to demonstrate the impact of the LHC data on the PDFs and their precision. The measurements of muon charge asymmetry in W-boson production at a center-of-mass of 7 and 8 TeV is used to improve the constraints on the valence-quark distributions, while the associated production of W-boson and…
Heavy quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) play an important role in several Standard Model and New Physics processes. Most PDF analyses rely on the assumption that the charm and bottom PDFs are generated perturbatively by gluon splitting and do not include any non-perturbative degrees of freedom. However, a non-perturbative, intrinsic heavy quark PDFs have been predicted in the literature. We demonstrate that to a very good approximation the scale-evolution of the intrinsic heavy quark content of the nucleon is governed by non-singlet evolution equations, and use this approximation to m…
We discuss the recent CMS Collaboration measurement of $W^\pm$ boson production in p+Pb collisions at 8.16 TeV in terms of the constraining power on nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs). The impact of the free-proton PDF uncertainties on the nuclear PDF extraction is quantified by using a theoretical covariance-matrix method and Hessian PDF reweighting. We discuss different ways to mitigate these theoretical uncertainties, including self-normalization, forward-to-backward ratios and nuclear-modification ratios. It is found that none of these methods offer perfect cancellation of the fr…
The LHC heavy ion data for W/Z production can provide new incisive information on the PDFs. This data is sensitive to the heavier quark flavors (strange and charm) in a high energy kinematic region; this can facilitate the determination of PDFs in the small x region where previous data was limited. At present, the flavor separation of the proton PDFs is dependent on DIS data from nuclear targets. Therefore, improved nuclear corrections can also yield enhanced flavor determination of both the proton and nuclear PDFs.
At LHCb, proton parton distribution functions (PDFs) can be studied in a unique phase space complementary to that accessible by ATLAS and CMS, corresponding to low and high values of Bjorken-$x$. The measurements of vector boson production in the forward region, with and without an associated jet, are presented. These measurements can be used to constrain the proton PDFs, and in particular, the production of a $Z$ boson in association with a $c$-jet can be studied to measure the intrinsic charm content of the proton.
We investigate the impact of the high precision ATLAS and CMS 7 TeV measurements of inclusive jet production on the MMHT global PDF analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). This is made possible by the recent completion of the long-term project to calculate the NNLO corrections to the hard cross section. We find that a good description of the ATLAS data is not possible with the default treatment of experimental systematic errors, and develop a simplified solution that retains the dominant physical information of the data. We then investigate the fit quality and the impact on the gluon…
We discuss the impact of heavy-flavor production measurements in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at HERA on the CTEQ-TEA PDFs. In particular, we study the impact of the latest charm and bottom production measurements from the H1 and ZEUS collaborations on the gluon, and the interplay of these measurements with the data ensemble of the recent CT18 global QCD analysis.
We consider a detailed account on the construction of the heavy-quark parton distribution functions for charm and bottom, starting from $n_f=3$ light flavors in the fixed-flavor number (FFN) scheme and by using the standard decoupling relations for heavy quarks in QCD. We also account for two-mass effects. Furthermore, different implementations of the variable-flavor-number (VFN) scheme in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) are studied, with the particular focus on the resummation of large logarithms in $Q^2/m_h^2$, the ratio the virtuality of the exchanged gauge-boson $Q^2$ to the heavy-quark ma…
We report on EPPS16, the first global analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) to include LHC data. Also for the first time, a full flavour dependence of nPDFs is allowed. While the included Z and W data are found to have insufficient statistics to yield stringent constraints, the CMS 5.02 TeV proton-lead dijet data prove crucial in setting the shape of nuclear gluon modifications. With these and other observables being measured in proton-lead runs, we are experiencing a shift of nPDFs to the LHC precision era.
We study the effect of the charm quark mass in the CTEQ global analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. Constraints on the $\bar{\rm MS}$ mass of the charm quark are examined at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy in the S-ACOT-$χ$ heavy-quark factorization scheme. The value of the charm quark mass from the hadronic scattering data in the CT10 NNLO fit, including semiinclusive charm production in DIS at HERA collider, is found to agree with the world average value. Various approaches for constraining $m_{c}$ in the global analysis and impact on LHC cross se…
We present NNPDF3.0, the first set of parton distribution functions (PDFs) determined with a methodology validated by a closure test. NNPDF3.0 uses a global dataset including HERA-II deep-inelastic inclusive cross-sections, the combined HERA charm data, jet production from ATLAS and CMS, vector boson rapidity and transverse momentum distributions from ATLAS, CMS and LHCb, W+c data from CMS and top quark pair production total cross sections from ATLAS and CMS. Results are based on LO, NLO and NNLO QCD theory and also include electroweak corrections. To validate our methodology, we show that PDF…
I discuss advances in the determination of strange, charm, and bottom quark parton distribution functions obtained in the CTEQ6.5 and CTEQ6.6 global analyses. These results affect electroweak precision observables and certain new physics searches at the Large Hadron Collider. I focus, in particular, on high-energy implications of the consistent treatment of heavy-quark threshold effects in DIS in the general-mass factorization scheme; an independent parametrization for the strangeness PDF; and the possible presence of nonperturbative ("intrinsic") charm.
In this contribution we briefly report on the progress and open problems in parton distribution functions (PDFs), with emphasis on their implications for LHC phenomenology. Then we study the impact of the recent ATLAS and CMS W lepton asymmetry data on the NNPDF2.1 parton distributions. We show that these data provide the first constrains on PDFs from LHC measurements.
Detailed studies have been carried out on the impact of the LHC top quark pair production data on gluon PDF, in the context of the CTEQ-TEA global PDF fit, with the ePump-updating method. The considered $t\bar{t}$ data include single differential distributions from ATLAS and double differential distributions from CMS, both at 8 TeV. All analyses have been carried out at the NNLO, using fastNNLO tables. We show that the sensitivity per data point of the LHC $t\bar{t}$ data is similar to that of jet data, as included in the CT14HERA2 fit, while the total sensitivity of the present $t\bar{t}$ dat…
