The well-known Sauer lemma states that a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ of VC-dimension at most $d$ has size at most $\sum_{i=0}^d\binom{n}{i}$. We obtain both random and explicit constructions to prove that the corresponding saturation number, i.e., the size of the smallest maximal family with VC-dimension $d\ge 2$, is at most $4^{d+1}$, and thus is independent of $n$.
A very nice result of Bárány and Lehel asserts that every finite subset $X$ or $\mathbb R^d$ can be covered by $f(d)$ $X$-boxes (i.e. each box has two antipodal points in $X$). As shown by Gyárfás and Pálvőlgyi this result would follow from the following conjecture : If a tournament admits a partition of its arc set into $k$ quasi orders, then its domination number is bounded in terms of $k$. This question is in turn implied by the Erdős-Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture : If the arcs of a tournament $T$ are colored with $k$ colors, there is a set $X$ of at most $g(k)$ vertices such that for ever…
We introduce tree dimension and its leveled variant in order to measure the complexity of leaf sets in binary trees. We then provide a tight upper bound on the size of such sets using leveled tree dimension. This, in turn, implies both the famous Sauer-Shelah Lemma for VC dimension and Bhaskar's version for Littlestone dimension, giving clearer insight into why these results place the exact same upper bound on their respective shatter functions. We also classify the isomorphism types of maximal leaf sets by tree dimension. Finally, we generalize this analysis to higher-arity trees.
In this paper we completely resolve the well-known problem of Erdős and Sauer from 1975 which asks for the maximum number of edges an $n$-vertex graph can have without containing a $k$-regular subgraph, for some fixed integer $k\geq 3$. We prove that any $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $C_k\log \log n$ contains a $k$-regular subgraph. This matches the lower bound of Pyber, Rödl and Szemerédi and substantially improves an old result of Pyber, who showed that average degree at least $C_k\log n$ is enough. Our method can also be used to settle asymptotically a problem raised by Erdő…
We set up a general context in which one can prove Sauer-Shelah type lemmas. We apply our general results to answer a question of Bhaskar and give a slight improvement to a result of Malliaris and Terry. We also prove a new Sauer-Shelah type lemma in the context of op-rank, a notion of Guingona and Hill.
We say that a set system $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ shatters a given set $S\subseteq [n]$ if $2^S={F \cap S : F \in \mathcal{F}}$. The Sauer inequality states that in general, a set system $\mathcal{F}$ shatters at least $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. Here we concentrate on the case of equality. A set system is called shattering-extremal if it shatters exactly $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. We characterize shattering extremal set systems of Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension 1 in terms of their inclusion graphs. Also from the perspective of extremality, we relate set systems of bounded Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimens…
Gerbner, Patkós, Tuza, and Vizer recently initiated the study of $F$-saturated regular graphs. One of the essential problems in this line of research is determining when such a graph exists. Using generalized sum-free sets we prove that for any odd integer $k \geq 5$, there is an $n$-vertex regular $C_k$-saturated graph for all $n \geq n_k$. Our proof is based on constructing a special type of sum-free set in $\mathbb{Z}_n$. We prove that for all even $\ell \geq 4$ and integers $n > 12 \ell^2 + 36 \ell + 24$, there is a symmetric complete $( \ell , 1)$-sum-free set in $\mathbb{Z}_n$. We pose t…
The problem of determining the Turán number of $C_4$ is a well studied problem that dates back to a paper of Erdös from 1938. It is known that Sidon sets can be used to construct $C_4$-free graphs. If $\A$ is a Sidon set in the abelian group $X$, the sum graph $G_{X, \A}$ with vertex set $X$ and edges set $E=\{\{x, y\}:x\neq y, x+y\in \A\}$ is $C_4$-free. Using the sum graph of a Sidon set of type Singer we verify a conjecture of Erdös and Simonovits concerning the number of copies of $C_4$ in a graph with $ex(q^2+q+1, C_4)+1$ edges. Further, we give a sufficient condition for the sum graph of…
We say that a set system $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ shatters a given set $S\subseteq [n]$ if $2^S= \{F~\cap~S:~F~\in~\mathcal{F}\}$. The Sauer-Shelah lemma states that in general, a set system $\mathcal{F}$ shatters at least $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. Here we concentrate on the case of equality. A set system is called \emph{shattering-extremal} if it shatters exactly $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. A conjecture of Rónyai and the second author and of Litman and Moran states that if a family is shattering-extremal then one can add a set to it and the resulting family is still shattering-extremal. Here we p…

A set system is called shattering-extremal if it shatters exactly $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets. In this paper we characterize shattering-extremal set systems of Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension $2$ in terms of their inclusion graphs, and as a corollary we answer an open question from \cite{VC1} about leaving out ele…
We present recursive formulas giving the maximal number of leaves in tree-like polyforms living in two-dimensional regular lattices and in tree-like polycubes in the three-dimensional cubic lattice. We call these tree-like polyforms and polycubes \emph{fully leafed}. The proof relies on a combinatorial algorithm that enumerates rooted directed trees that we call abundant. In the last part, we concentrate on the particular case of polyforms and polycubes, that we call \emph{saturated}, which is the family of fully leafed structures that maximize the ratio $\mbox{(number of leaves)}/\mbox{ (numb…
We call a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $[n]$ $s$-saturated if it contains no $s$ pairwise disjoint sets, and moreover no set can be added to $\mathcal{F}$ while preserving this property (here $[n] = \{1,\ldots,n\}$). More than 40 years ago, Erdős and Kleitman conjectured that an $s$-saturated family of subsets of $[n]$ has size at least $(1 - 2^{-(s-1)})2^n$. It is easy to show that every $s$-saturated family has size at least $\frac{1}{2}\cdot 2^n$, but, as was mentioned by Frankl and Tokushige, even obtaining a slightly better bound of $(1/2 + \varepsilon)2^n$, for some fixed $\varepsi…
We say that a set system $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ shatters a set $S\subseteq [n]$ if every possible subset of $S$ appears as the intersection of $S$ with some element of $\mathcal{F}$ and we denote by $\text{Sh}(\mathcal{F})$ the family of sets shattered by $\mathcal{F}$. According to the Sauer-Shelah lemma we know that in general, every set system $\mathcal{F}$ shatters at least $|\mathcal{F}|$ sets and we call a set system shattering-extremal if $|\text{Sh}(\mathcal{F})|=|\mathcal{F}|$. Mészáros and Rónyai, among other things, gave an algebraic characterization of shattering-extremalit…
A set of lines through the origin in Euclidean space is called equiangular when any pair of lines from the set intersects with each other at a common angle. We study the maximum size of equiangular lines in Euclidean space and use graph theoretic approach to prove that all the currently known construction for maximum equiangular lines in $\mathbb R^d$ cannot add another line to form a larger equiangular set of lines if $14 \leq d \leq 20$ and $d \neq 15$. We give new constructions of large equiangular lines which are 248 equiangular lines in $\mathbb R^{42}$, 200 equiangular lines in $\mathbb{…
In this paper we present the set of saturated numerical semigroups with prime multiplicity. We also characterize the catenary degree of these semigroups that we acquire. The catenary degree of a numerical semigroup is the variant which measures the distance between factorizations of elements within that numerical semigroup.
An $\mathcal{F}$-saturated $r$-graph is a maximal $r$-graph not containing any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. Let $\mathcal{K}_{\ell + 1}^{r}$ be the collection of all $r$-graphs $F$ with at most $\binom{\ell+1}{2}$ edges such that for some $\left(\ell+1\right)$-set $S$ every pair $\{u, v\} \subset S$ is covered by an edge in $F$. Our first result shows that for each $\ell \geq r \geq 2$ every $\mathcal{K}_{\ell+1}^{r}$-saturated $r$-graph on $n$ vertices with $t_{r}(n, \ell) - o(n^{r-1+1/\ell})$ edges contains a complete $\ell$-partite subgraph on $(1-o(1))n$ vertices, which extends a…
Given a finite poset $\mathcal P$, we call a family $\mathcal F$ of subsets of $[n]$ $\mathcal P$-saturated if $\mathcal F$ does not contain an induced copy of $\mathcal P$, but adding any other set to $\mathcal F$ creates an induced copy of $\mathcal P$. The induced saturated number of $\mathcal P$, denoted by $\text{sat}^*(n,\mathcal P)$, is the size of the smallest $\mathcal P$-saturated family with ground set $[n]$. In this paper we are mainly interested in the four-point poset called the butterfly. Ferrara, Kay, Kramer, Martin, Reiniger, Smith and Sullivan showed that the saturation numbe…
我们研究了三种不同的偏序集结构上的所有组成。在第一种情况下,覆盖关系包括向左或向右插入一个尺寸为1的部分,或者将某个部分的尺寸增加1。作者在“A poset classifying non-commutative term orders”和“Standard paths in another composition poset”中研究了由此得到的偏序集,并在其中建立了关于标准路的生成函数的一些结果。
Given a set $X$, a collection $\mathcal{F}\subseteq\mathcal{P}(X)$ is said to be $k$-Sperner if it does not contain a chain of length $k+1$ under set inclusion and it is saturated if it is maximal with respect to this property. Gerbner et al. conjectured that, if $|X|$ is sufficiently large with respect to $k$, then the minimum size of a saturated $k$-Sperner system $\mathcal{F}\subseteq\mathcal{P}(X)$ is $2^{k-1}$. We disprove this conjecture by showing that there exists $\varepsilon>0$ such that for every $k$ and $|X| \geq n_0(k)$ there exists a saturated $k$-Sperner system $\mathcal{F}\subs…
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $r$-graphs. An $r$-graph $G$ is called $\mathcal{F}$-saturated if it does not contain any members of $\mathcal{F}$ but adding any edge creates a copy of some $r$-graph in $\mathcal{F}$. The saturation number $\operatorname{sat}(\mathcal{F},n)$ is the minimum number of edges in an $\mathcal{F}$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. We prove that there exists a finite family $\mathcal{F}$ such that $\operatorname{sat}(\mathcal{F},n) / n^{r-1}$ does not tend to a limit. This settles a question of Pikhurko.
Well-graded families, extremal systems and maximum systems (the last two in the sense of VC-theory and Sauer-Shelah lemma on VC-dimension) are three important classes of set systems. This paper aims to study the notion of duality in the context of these classes of set systems and then use the obtained results for studying graphs. More specifically, we are concerned with the characterization of the finite set systems which themselves and their dual systems are both well-graded, extremal or maximum. On the way to this goal, and maybe also of independent interest, we study the structure of the we…
