Different from the Fermi surface of the type-I Dirac semimetal being a point, that of the type-II Dirac semimetal is a pair of crossing lines because the Dirac cone is tilted with open and hyperbolic isofrequency contours. As an optical analogy, type-II Dirac photonic lattices have been also designed. Here, we report type-II Dirac cones in Lieb-like photonic lattices composed of identical waveguide channels, and the anisotropy of the band structure is due to neither the refractive index change nor the environment, but only the spatial symmetry of the lattice; therefore, the proposal is advantage and benefits experimental observation. Conical diffractions and Klein tunneling in the parametric type-II photonic lattice are investigated in detail. Our results provide a simple and experimental feasible platform to study two-dimensional topological photonic and other nonrelativistic phenomena around type-II Dirac cones.
We reported about observation of Dirac points in a helically structured 1D photonic crystals, moreover, both as in the presence of longitudinal magnetic field as its absence. We obtained analytical formulas for Dirac points frequencies and the analytical dispersion relations for wave vectors.
The simulation of fermionic relativistic physics, e.g., Dirac and Weyl physics, has led to the discovery of many unprecedented phenomena in photonics, of which the optical-frequency realization is, however, still challenging. Here, surprisingly, we discover that the woodpile photonic crystals commonly used for optical frequency applications host exotic fermion-like relativistic degeneracies: a Dirac nodal line and a fourfold quadratic point, as protected by the nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry. Deforming the woodpile photonic crystal leads to the emergence of type-II Dirac points from the fo…
Topological semimetals, representing a new topological phase that lacks a full bandgap in bulk states and exhibiting nontrivial topological orders, recently have been extended to photonic systems, predominantly in photonic crystals and to a lesser extent, metamaterials. Photonic crystal realizations of Dirac degeneracies are protected by various space symmetries, where Bloch modes span the spin and orbital subspaces. Here, we theoretically show that Dirac points can also be realized in effective media through the intrinsic degrees of freedom in electromagnetism under electromagnetic duality. A…
Recently, the gapless Dirac/Weyl nodal semimetals with linear dispersion and topologically protected modes degeneracy are rapidly growing frontiers of topological physics. Especially, type-I, type-II, and critical type-III nodal semimetals are discovered according to the tilt angles of the Dirac/Weyl cones. Here, by introducing hyperbolic metamaterials into one-dimensional photonic crystals, we design the "hyper-crystal" and study the photonic four-fold degenerate Dirac nodal line semimetals (DNLSs) with two types of perpendicularly polarized waves. Moreover, the flexibly controlled photonic D…
A photonic realization of the Dirac oscillator (DO), i.e. of the relativistic extension of the quantum harmonic oscillator, is proposed for light propagation in fiber Bragg gratings. Transmission spectra clearly show the existence of electron and positron bound states of the DO, corresponding to resonance modes above and below the Bragg frequency, as well as the asymmetry of the energy spectrum for electron and positron branches.
It is shown, for the first time, that the zitterbewegung of photon can appear near the Dirac point in two-dimensional photonic crystal. The superiority of such a phenomenon for photons is that it can be found in different scaling structures with wide frequency regions. It can be observed by measuring the time dependence of the transmission coefficient through photonic crystal slabs. Thus, it is particularly suited for experimentally observing this effect. We have observed such a phenomenon by exact numerical simulations, confirming a long-standing theoretical prediction.
The origin of spin-orbit interaction of light at a conventional optical interface lies in the transverse nature of the photon polarization: The polarizations associated with the plane-wave components experience slightly different rotations in order to satisfy the transversality after reflection or refraction. Recent advances in topological photonic materials provide crucial opportunities to reexamine the spin-orbit interaction of light at the unique optical interface. Here, we establish a general model to describe the spin-orbit interaction of light in the photonic Dirac metacrystal. We find a…
A semi-Dirac cone refers to a peculiar type of dispersion relation that is linear along the symmetry line but quadratic in the perpendicular direction. Here, I demonstrate that a photonic crystal consisting of a square array of elliptical dielectric cylinders is able to produce this particular dispersion relation in the Brillouin zone center. A perturbation method is used to evaluate the linear slope and to affirm that the dispersion relation is a semi-Dirac type. Effective medium parameters calculated from a boundary effective medium theory not only explain the unexpected topological transiti…
We report trapping and propagation of photonic Dirac mode in a helically twisted hollow core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) where the trapped light in the hollow (air) defect can preserve the orbital angular momentum (OAM). We show that a photonic Dirac point can emerge even in a twisted system for a suitable choice of curvilinear coordinate and the related waveguide defect modes defined in the new basis can preserve the associated OAM during axial translation. The effect of twist rate, defect geometry and crystal dimension on the propagation of OAM carrying trapped Dirac modes is critically …
By altering the lattice geometry of the photonic crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs), we tune the regular lasing band edges of quadratic dispersions to form a single accidental Dirac point of linear dispersion at the Brillouin zone center. This not only increases the mode spacing by orders of magnitude, but also eliminates the distributed in-plane feedback to enable single-mode PCSELs of substantially larger area thus substantially higher output power. The advantages of using accidental Dirac cones are systematically evaluated through two-dimensional in-plane calculations and confirmed by…
We demonstrate that symmetry breaking opens a new degree of freedom to tailor the energy-momentum dispersion in photonic crystals. Using a general theoretical framework in two illustrative practical structures, we show that breaking symmetry enables an on-demand tuning of the local density of states of a same photonic band from zero (Dirac cone dispersion) to infinity (flatband dispersion), as well as any constant density over an adjustable spectral range. As a proof-of-concept, we experimentally demonstrate the transformation of a very same photonic band from conventional quadratic shape to D…
The Lieb lattice and the kagome lattice, which are both well known for their Dirac cones and flat bands, can be continuously converted into each other by a shearing transformation. During this transformation, the flat band is destroyed, but the Dirac cones remain and become tilted, with types I, II, and III occurring for different parameters. In this work, we first study these tilted Dirac cones using a tight-binding model, revealing how they can be engineered into the different types. We then demonstrate conical diffraction in a photonic lattice realization of the Lieb-kagome lattice using sp…
We introduce the concept of a photonic Dirac monopole, appropriate for photonic crystals, metamaterials and 2D materials, by utilizing the Dirac-Maxwell correspondence. We start by exploring vacuum where the reciprocal momentum space of both Maxwell's equations and the massless Dirac equation (Weyl equation) possess a magnetic monopole. The critical distinction is the nature of magnetic monopole charges, which are integer valued for photons but half-integer for electrons. This inherent difference is directly tied to the spin and ultimately connects to the bosonic or fermionic behavior. We also…
We perform a comparative study of the Anderson localization of light beams in disordered layered photonic nanostructures that, in the limit of periodic layer distribution, possess either a Dirac point or a Bragg gap in the spectrum of the wavevectors. In particular, we demonstrate that the localization length of the Anderson modes increases when the width of the Bragg gap decreases, such that in the vanishingly small bandgap limit, namely when a Dirac point is formed, even extremely high levels of disorders are unable to localize the optical modes located near the Dirac point. A comparative an…
Topological phases arise from the elegant mathematical structures imposed by the interplay between symmetry and topology1-5. From gapped topological insulators to gapless semimetals, topological materials in both quantum and classical systems, have grown rapidly in the last decade. Among them, three-dimensional Dirac semimetal lies at the topological phase transition point between various topological phases. It shares multiple exotic topological features with other topological materials, such as Fermi arcs and chiral anomaly with Weyl semimetals30, spin-dependent surface states with topologica…
We demonstrate that graphene-based photonic superlattices provide a versatile platform for electrical and all-optical control of photonic beams with deep-subwavelength accuracy. Specifically, by inserting graphene sheets into periodic metallo-dielectric structures one can design optical superlattices that posses photonic Dirac points (DPs) at frequencies at which the spatial average of the permittivity of the superlattice, $\bar{ \varepsilon}$, vanishes. Similar to the well-known zero-$\bar{n}$ bandgaps, we show that these zero-$\bar{\varepsilon}$ DPs are highly robust against structural disor…
We present an analytical study of the mode degeneracy in non-Hermitian photonic crystals (PC) with $C_{4v}$ symmetry, from the perspective of the coupled-wave-theory (CWT). The wave couplings and leakages within the non-Hermitian PCs are depicted, and the condition of accidental triple degeneracy is derived which leads to a Dirac-cone like dispersion. We prove that, similar to the real Dirac-cone, the Dirac-cone like band in non-Hermitian PC possesses good linearity and isotropy in the vicinity of the $Γ$ point. Moreover, some topological transit of the band may occur when the parameters adiab…
We discover a pair of stable 3D Dirac points, 3D photonic analog of graphene, in all-dielectric photonic crystals using structures commensurate with nano-fabrication for visible-frequency photonic applications. The Dirac points carry nontrivial $Z_2$ topology and emerge for a large range of material parameters in hollow cylinder hexagonal photonic crystals. From Kramers theorem and group theory, we find that only the $C_6$ symmetry lead to point group symmetry stabilized Dirac points in 3D all-dielectric photonic crystals. {The Dirac points are characterized using ${\vec k}\cdot{\vec P}$ theor…
We apply a large-scale computational technique, known as topology optimization, to the inverse design of photonic Dirac cones. In particular, we report on a variety of photonic crystal geometries, realizable in simple isotropic dielectric materials, which exhibit dual-polarization and dual-wavelength Dirac cones. We demonstrate the flexibility of this technique by designing photonic crystals of different symmetry types, such as ones with four-fold and six-fold rotational symmetry, which possess Dirac cones at different points within the Brillouin zone. The demonstrated and related optimization…

The discovery of a new type of solitons occuring in periodic systems without photonic bandgaps is reported. Solitons are nonlinear self-trapped wave packets. They have been extensively studied in many branches of physics. Solitons in periodic systems, which have become the mainstream of soliton research in the past decade, are localized states supported by photonic bandgaps. In this Letter, we report the discovery of a new type of solitons located at the Dirac point beyond photonic bandgaps. The Dirac point is a conical singularity of a photonic band structure where wave motion obeys the famou…
We propose a novel inverse-design method that enables brute-force discovery of photonic crystal (PhC) structures with complex spectral degeneracies. As a proof of principle, we demonstrate PhCs exhibiting third-order Dirac points formed by the \emph{accidental} degeneracy of modes of monopolar, dipolar, and quadrupolar nature. We show that under suitable conditions, these modes can coalesce and form a third-order exceptional point (EP3), leading to diverging Petermann factors. We show that the spontaneous emission (SE) rate of emitters at such EP3s, related to the local density of states, can …
We use a scattering matrix approach to simulate the transmission through a hexagonal Photonic Crystal in the vicinity of the Dirac point. If the crystal is oriented so that the propagation direction perpendicular to the surface corresponds to the Gamma-K direction, no oblique transmission is possible for a very long (infinite) structure. For a finite structure with width, W, and length, L, the length dependence of the transmission is given by T_total = Gamma_0 W/L. For T_total all waves with a wavevector parallel to the surface, k_||=n 2pi/W, described by a channel number, n, must be considere…
At photonic Dirac points, electromagnetic waves are governed by the same equations as two-component massless relativistic fermions. However, photonic Dirac points are known to occur in pairs in "photonic graphene" and other similar photonic crystals, which necessitates special precautions to excite only states near one of the Dirac points. Systems hosting unpaired photonic Dirac points are significantly harder to realize, as they require broken time-reversal symmetry. Here, we report on the first observation of an unpaired Dirac point in a planar two-dimensional photonic crystal. The structure…
The success of photonic crystal fibres relies largely on the endless variety of two-dimensional photonic crystals in the cross-section. Here, we propose a topological bandgap fibre whose bandgaps along in-plane directions are opened by generalized Kekulé modulation of a Dirac lattice with a vortex phase. Then, the existence of mid-gap defect modes is guaranteed to guide light at the core of this Dirac-vortex fibre, where the number of guiding modes equals the winding number of the spatial vortex. The single-vortex design provides a single-polarization single mode for a bandwidth as large as on…
The extraordinary electronic properties of Dirac materials, the two-dimensional partners of Weyl semimetals, arise from the linear crossings in their band structure. When the dispersion around the Dirac points is tilted, the emergence of intricate transport phenomena has been predicted, such as modified Klein tunnelling, intrinsic anomalous Hall effects and ferrimagnetism. However, Dirac materials are rare, particularly with tilted Dirac cones. Recently, artificial materials whose building blocks present orbital degrees of freedom have appeared as promising candidates for the engineering of ex…
The past decade has seen a proliferation of topological materials for both insulators and semimetals in electronic systems and classical waves. Topological semimetals exhibit topologically protected band degeneracies, such as nodal points and nodal lines. Dirac nodal line semimetals (DNLS), which own four-fold line degeneracy, have drawn particular attention. DNLSs have been studied in electronic systems but there is no photonic DNLS. Here in this work, we provide a new mechanism which is unique for photonic systems to investigate a stringent photonic DNLS. When truncated, the photonic DNLS ex…
Visible surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) could be excited by TE wave polarization in one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) coated by a graphene layer under the Kretschmann configuration. In this work, the plasmonic Bloch wave properties beyond Dirac points in a one-dimensional graphene-based photonic sensing structure have been numerically studied. We demonstrate that emergent plasmonic dips in the reflectance spectra of the suggested photonic device in the visible region exhibit tunable characteristics upon modulation of the chemical potential and the hopping parameter. The sensitivity of …
A single Dirac cone on the surface is the hallmark of three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators, where the double degeneracy at the Dirac point is protected by time-reversal symmetry and the spin-splitting away from the point is provided by the spin-orbital coupling. Here we predict a single Dirac-cone surface state in a 3D photonic crystal, where the degeneracy at the Dirac point is protected by a nonsymmorphic glide reflection and the linear splitting away from it is enabled by breaking time-reversal symmetry. Such a gapless surface state is fully robust against random disorder of any ty…
We show an implementation of a kappa-deformed Dirac equation in tight-binding arrays of photonic waveguides. This is done with a special configuration of couplings extending to second nearest neighbors. Geometric manipulations can control these evanescent couplings. A careful study of wave packet propagation is presented, including the effects of deformation parameters on Zitterbewegung or trembling motion. In this way, we demonstrate how to recreate the effects of a flat noncommutative spacetime -i.e., kappa-Minkowski spacetime -in simple experimental setups. We touch upon elastic realization…
We study analytically and numerically the optical analogue of the Jackiw-Rebbi states in quantum field theory. These solutions exist at the interface of two binary waveguide arrays which are described by two Dirac equations with opposite sign masses. We show that these special states are topologically robust not only in the linear regime, but also in nonlinear regimes (with both focusing and de-focusing nonlinearity). We also reveal that one can generate the Jackiw-Rebbi states starting from Dirac solitons.
We show that by using a perturbed photonic Dirac-cone, one can realize ultra-narrow and finite Q-factor peak in the wavevector space, with both the peak value and the width separately tunable. We also discuss a lower bound in the minimal viable width given a peak Q-value while maintaining sufficient Q differentiation among modes. The strong angular and frequency Q-selection finds applications in optical devices where strong angle- and frequency-selection is needed.
We report on singular and nonsingular flat bands in a Sierpinski fractal-like photonic lattice. We demonstrate that the the lowest two bands, being isolated and degenerate due to geometrical frustration, are nonsingular and thus can be spanned by a complete set of compact localized states. We experimentally prove these states to propagate diffractionless in the photonic lattice. Our results reveal the interplay between geometrical frustration, degenerate flat bands and compact localized states in a single photonic lattice, and pave the way to photonic spin liquid ground states.
The recent discovery of higher-order topology has largely enriched the classification of topological materials. Theoretical and experimental studies have unveiled various higher-order topological insulators that exhibit topologically protected corner or hinge states. More recently, higher-order topology has been introduced to topological semimetals. Thus far, realistic models and experimental verifications on higher-order topological semimetals are still very limited. Here, we design and demonstrate a three-dimensional photonic crystal that realizes a higher-order Dirac semimetal phase. Numeri…
Dirac points, new photonic band gaps and effect of magnetically induced transparency in dichroic cholesteric liquid crystals with wavelength dependent magnetooptical activity parameter
The emission from a radiating source embedded in a photonic lattice is calculated. The analysis considers the photonic lattice and free space as a combined system. Furthermore, the radiating source and electromagnetic field are quantized. Results show the deviation of the photonic lattice spectrum from the blackbody distribution, with intracavity emission suppressed at certain frequencies and enhanced at others. In the presence of rapid population relaxation, where the photonic lattice and blackbody populations are described by the same equilibrium distribution, it is found that the enhancemen…
The presence of topological edge modes at the interface of two perturbed honeycomb photonic crystals with $C_6$ symmetry is often attributed to the different signs of Berry curvature at the K and K$'$ valleys. In contrast to the electronic counterpart, the Chern number defined in photonic valley Hall effect is not a quantized quantity but can be tuned to finite values including zero simply by changing geometrical perturbations. Here, we argue that the edge modes in photonic valley Hall effect can exist even when Berry curvature vanishes. We numerically demonstrate the presence of the zero-Berr…
We address Anderson localization in disordered honeycomb photonic lattices and show that the localization process is strongly affected by the spectral position of the input wavepacket within the first Brillouin zone of the lattice. In spite of the fact that in regular lattice the expansion of the beam is much stronger for the excitation near the Dirac points, where light exhibits conical diffraction, than for the excitation at the center of the Brillouin zone, where the beam exhibits normal diffraction, we found that disorder leads to pronounced Anderson localization even around the Dirac poin…
A right amount of disorder in the form of refractive index variation has been introduced to achieve transverse localization of light 1D semi-infinite photonic lattices. Presence of longitudinally-invariant transverse disorder opens-up a new waveguiding mechanism.
Photonic crystals with a two-dimensional triangular lattice have a conical singularity in the spectrum. Close to this so-called Dirac point, Maxwell's equations reduce to the Dirac equation for an ultrarelativistic spin-1/2 particle. Here we show that the half-integer spin and the associated Berry phase remain observable in the presence of disorder in the crystal. While constructive interference of a scalar (spin-zero) wave produces a coherent backscattering peak, consisting of a doubling of the disorder-averaged reflected photon flux, the destructive interference caused by the Berry phase sup…
We calculate the effect of a Dirac point (a conical singularity in the band structure) on the transmission of monochromatic radiation through a photonic crystal. The transmission as a function of frequency has an extremum at the Dirac point, depending on the transparencies of the interfaces with free space. The extremal transmission $T_{0}=Γ_{0} W/L$ is inversely proportional to the longitudinal dimension $L$ of the crystal (for $L$ larger than the lattice constant and smaller than the transverse dimension $W$). The interface transparencies affect the proportionality constant $Γ_{0}$, and they…
Compared to artificial metamaterials, where nano-fabrication complexities and finite-size inclusions can hamper the desired electromagnetic response, several natural materials like van der Waals crystals hold great promise for designing efficient nanophotonic devices in the optical range. Here, we investigate the unusual optical response of NiTe$_2$, a van der Waals crystal and a type-II Dirac semimetal hosting Lorentz-violating Dirac fermions. By {\it ab~initio~} density functional theory modeling, we show that NiTe$_2$ harbors multiple topological photonic regimes for evanescent waves (such …
We present a novel, real-time, experimental technique for linear and nonlinear Brillouin zone spectroscopy of photonic lattices. The method relies on excitation with random-phase waves and far-field visualization of the spatial spectrum of the light exiting the lattice. Our technique facilitates mapping the borders of the extended Brillouin zones and the areas of normal and anomalous dispersion within each zone. For photonic lattices with defects (e.g., photonic crystal fibers), our technique enables far-field visualization of the defect mode overlaid on the extended Brillouin zone structure o…
We present a physical explanation of Zitterbewegung-like effect near the zero-refractive-index point in a metamaterial slab in this paper. Between the negative and positive refractive index regions centered at the zero-refractive-index point, the transmittance spectrum distribution of the metamaterial slab is asymmetrical. When a symmetrical pulse propagates through the metamaterial slab, its transmitted spectrum becomes asymmetrical due to the asymmetry of the transmittance spectrum of the slab, leading to a transmitted pulse with an asymmetrical temporal shape. The asymmetry manifests a kind…
We review the recent developments in the field of photonic lattices emphasizing their unique properties for controlling linear and nonlinear propagation of light. We draw some important links between optical lattices and photonic crystals pointing towards practical applications in optical communications and computing, beam shaping, and bio-sensing.
We propose a method to detect the geometric phase produced by the Dirac-type band structure of a triangular-lattice photonic crystal. The spectrum is known to have a conical singularity (= Dirac point) with a pair of nearly degenerate modes near that singularity described by a spin-1/2 degree of freedom (= pseudospin). The geometric Berry phase acquired upon rotation of the pseudospin is in general obscured by a large and unspecified dynamical phase. We use the analogy with graphene to show how complementary media can eliminate the dynamical phase. A transmission minimum results as a direct co…
We develop an analytic formalism to describe dipole radiation near the Dirac cone of a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab. In contrast to earlier work, we account for all polarization effects and derive a closed-form expression for the dyadic Green's function of the geometry. Using this analytic Green's function, we demonstrate that the dipolar interaction mediated by the slab exhibits winding phases, which are key ingredients for engineering topological systems for quantum emitters, as discussed in detail in J. Perczel et al., (2018), arXiv:1810.12299. As an example, we study the coherent …
We apply gain/loss to honeycomb photonic lattices and show that the dispersion relation is identical to tachyons - particles with imaginary mass that travel faster than the speed of light. This is accompanied by PT-symmetry breaking in this structure. We further show that the PT-symmetry can be restored by deforming the lattice.
The Dirac equation is a paradigmatic model that describes a range of intriguing properties of relativistic spin-1/2 particles, from the existence of antiparticles to Klein tunneling. However, the Dirac-like equations have found application far beyond its original scope, and has been used to comprehend the properties of graphene and topological phases of matter. In the field of photonics, the opportunity to emulate Dirac physics has also enabled topological photonic insulators. In this paper, we demonstrate that judiciously engineered synthetic potentials in photonic Dirac systems can offer phy…
Linear defect modes in one-dimensional photonic lattices are studied theoretically. For negative (repulsive) defects, various localized defect modes are found. The strongest confinement of the defect modes appear when the lattice intensity at the defect site is {\em non-zero} rather than zero. When launched at small angles into such a defect site of the lattice, a Gaussian beam can be trapped and undergo snake oscillations under appropriate conditions.

In particular, photonic lattices composed of evanescently coupled waveguide arrays have been employed conveniently to explore and investigate topological physics. In this article, we review our recent work on demonstration of topological phenomena in reconfigurable…
