The origin of spin-orbit interaction of light at a conventional optical interface lies in the transverse nature of the photon polarization: The polarizations associated with the plane-wave components experience slightly different rotations in order to satisfy the transversality after reflection or refraction. Recent advances in topological photonic materials provide crucial opportunities to reexamine the spin-orbit interaction of light at the unique optical interface. Here, we establish a general model to describe the spin-orbit interaction of light in the photonic Dirac metacrystal. We find a giant photonic spin Hall effect near the Dirac points when a Gaussian beam impinges at the interface of the photonic Dirac metacrystal. The giant photonic spin Hall effect is attribute to the strong spin-orbit interaction of light, which manifests itself as the large polarization rotations of different plane-wave components. We believe that these results may provide insight into the fundamental properties of the spin-orbit interaction of light in the topological photonic systems.
Valley-Hall-like second-order photonic topological insulators are designed in Kagome-lattice photonic crystals with C3v point-group symmetry. The photonic crystal consists of circular air holes in pure dielectric materials. Different from conventional valley-Hall photonic topological insulators characterized by valley Chern numbers, the proposed insulators have topological invariants described by quantized electric polarization. Topological transition can be realized by tuning the structural size and topological edge states appear at the interface between photonic crystals with different topol…
Photonic topological insulators provide unprecedented possibilities to eliminate scattering losses and improve the efficiency of optical communication systems. Despite significant theoretical efforts, the experimental demonstration of an integrated photonic topological insulator operating in the telecommunication regime was still missing. Here, we design, fabricate and characterize a photonic-crystal-based topological structure that exhibits valley-Hall effect. We experimentally demonstrate the propagation of topologically protected edge states in a CMOS-compatible chip operating at telecommun…
An all-Si photonic structure emulating the quantum-valley-Hall effect is proposed. We show that it acts as a photonic topological insulator (PTI), and that an interface between two such PTIs can support edge states that are free from scattering. The conservation of the valley degree of freedom enables efficient in- and out-coupling of light between the free space and the photonic structure. The topological protection of the edge waves can be utilized for designing arrays of resonant time- delay photonic cavities that do not suffer from reflections and cross-talk.
We propose a family of {\it local} $\cal{PT}$-symmetric photonic lattices with transverse index gradient $ω$, where the emergence of {\it stable} Bloch-Zener oscillations are controlled by the degree of non-Hermiticity $γ$ of the lattice. In the exact $\cal{PT}$-symmetric phase we identify a condition between $ω$ and $γ$ for which a wavepacket self -imaging together with a cascade of splittings and giant recombinations occurs at various propagation distances. The giant wavepacket recombination is further enhanced by introducing local impurities.
Topological photonics has recently been proved a robust framework for manipulating light. Active topological photonic systems, in particular, enable richer fundamental physics by employing nonlinear light-matter interactions, thereby opening a new landscape for applications such as topological lasing. Here we report an all-dielectric topological insulator laser scheme based on semiconductor cavities formed by topologically distinct Kagome photonic crystals. The proposed planar semiconductor Kagome lattice allows broadband edge states below the light line due to photonic valley hall effect in t…
Coupling of electric and magnetic responses of a scatterer known as bianisotropy enables rich physics and unique optical phenomena, including asymmetric absorption or reflection, one-way transparency, and photonic topological phases. Here we demonstrate yet another feature stemming from bianisotropic response, namely, polarization-dependent scattering of light by bianisotropic dielectric meta-atom with broken mirror symmetry, which yields a photonic analogue of spin Hall effect. Based on a simple dipole model, we explain the origin of the effect confirming our conclusions by experimental obser…
We manipulate optical Tamm states in graphene-based photonics to achieve and steer large magneto-optical effects. Here we report the presence of a giant Faraday rotation via a single graphene layer of atomic thickness while keeping a high transmission. The Faraday rotation is enhanced across the interface between two photonic crystals due to the presence of an interface mode, which presents a strong electromagnetic field confinement at the location of the graphene sheet. Our proposed scheme opens a promising avenue to realize high performance graphene magneto-optical devices that can be extend…
We examine the photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) in a graphene-substrate system with the presence of external magnetic field. In the quantum Hall regime, we demonstrate that the in-plane and transverse spin-dependent splittings in photonic SHE exhibit different quantized behaviors. The quantized SHE can be described as a consequence of a quantized geometric phase (Berry phase), which corresponds to the quantized spin-orbit interaction. Furthermore, an experimental scheme based on quantum weak value amplification is proposed to detect the quantized SHE in terahertz frequency regime. By incorporat…
We study propagation of transverse-magnetic (TM) electromagnetic waves in the bulk and at the surface of magnetized epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) medium in a Voigt configuration. We reveal that in a certain range of material parameters novel regimes of wave propagation emerge: we show that the transparency of the medium can be altered with the magnetization leading either to magnetically induced Hall opacity or Hall transparency of the ENZ. In our theoretical study, we demonstrate that surface waves at the interface between either a transparent or an opaque Hall medium and a homogeneous medium may, …
Quantum Hall system possesses topologically protected edge states which have enormous theoretical and practical implications in both fermionic and bosonic systems. Harnessing the quantum Hall effect in optical platforms with lower dimensionality is highly desirable with synthetic dimensions and has attracted broad interests in the photonics society. Here, we introduce an alternative way to realize the artificial magnetic field in a frequency dimension, which is achieved in a pump-probe configuration with cross-phase modulations in a one-dimensional four waveguide array. The dynamics of the top…
In plasmonic systems, the enhanced photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) was previously possible only for horizontal polarization. By employing the wave-guiding surface plasmon resonance (WG-SPR) effect, we report a giant photonic spin Hall effect (G-PSHE) of reflected light for both horizontal and vertical polarization waves. We investigated the polarization-manipulated G-PSHE in the Kretschmann configuration with an additional glass dielectric layer. This additional dielectric layer allowed us to achieve millimeter-scale (more than 2 mm to sub-millimeter) G-PSHE. We achieved polarization manipula…
In this paper we theoretically investigate the photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) of a Gaussian beam reflected from the interface between air and topological insulators (TIs). The photonic SHE is attributed to spin-orbit coupling and manifests itself as in-plane and transverse spin-dependent splitting. We reveal that the spin-orbit coupling effect in TIs can be routed by adjusting the axion angle variations. Unlike the transverse spin-dependent splitting, we find that the in-plane one is sensitive to the axion angle. It is shown that the polarization structure in magneto-optical Kerr effect is si…
Strongly enhanced third-harmonic generation (THG) by the topological localization of an edge mode in a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain of silicon photonic crystal nanocavities is demonstrated. The edge mode of the nanocavity chain not only naturally inherits resonant properties of the single nanocavity, but also exhibits the topological feature with mode robustness extending well beyond individual nanocavity. By engineering the SSH nanocavities with alternating strong and weak coupling strengths on a silicon slab, we observe the edge mode formation that entails a THG signal with three orders …
Metamaterials, artificial media structured on the subwavelength scale offer a rich paradigm for developing unique photonic functionalities ranging from negative index of refraction and directionally asymmetric transmission to slowing light. Here we demonstrate that a combination of carbon nanotubes with a photonic metamaterial offers a new paradigm for the development of nonlinear media with exceptionally strong ultrafast nonlinear response invaluable in photonic applications. It is underpinned by strong coupling between weakly radiating Fano-type resonant plasmonic modes and the excitonic res…
Observation of photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) in dielectric-based metasurfaces with rotational symmetry breaking is presented. We find that the spin-dependent splitting is a unique angular splitting in the real position space, and is attributed to the space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PB). Breaking the rotational symmetry of the PB phase by misalignment of the central axes of the incident beam and the metasurface, the spin-dependent shift is observable. We show that the spin-dependent shift can be enhanced by increasing the rotation rate of the metasurface, so the metasurface provides a…
Photonic spin Hall effect in transmission is a transverse beam shift of the out-coming beam depending on polarization of the in-coming beam. The effect can be significantly enhanced by materials with high anisotropy. We report the first experimental demonstration of the photonic spin Hall effect in a multilayer hyperbolic metamaterial at visible wavelengths (wavelengths of 520 nm and 633 nm). The metamaterial is composed of alternating layers of gold and alumina with deeply-subwavelength thicknesses, exhibiting extremely large anisotropy. The angle resolved polarimetric measurements showed the…
We report the realization of tunable spin-dependent splitting in intrinsic photonic spin Hall effect. By breaking the rotational symmetry of a cylindrical vector beam, the intrinsic vortex phases that the two spin components of the vector beam carries, which is similar to the geometric Pancharatnam-Berry phase, is no longer continuous in the azimuthal direction, and leads to observation of spin accumulation at the opposite edge of the beam. Due to the inherent nature of the phase and independency of light-matter interaction, the observed photonic spin Hall effect is intrinsic. Modulating the t…
Recent developments in the field of photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) offer new opportunities for advantageous measurement of the optical parameters (refractive index, thickness, etc.) of nanostructures and enable spin-based photonics applications in the future. However, it remains a challenge to develop a tunable photonic SHE with any desired spin-dependent splitting for generation and manipulation of spin-polarized photons. Here, we demonstrate experimentally a scheme to realize the photonic SHE tunably by tailoring the space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP). It is shown that light beams…
We propose a new approach leading to giant gain enhancement. It is based on unconventional slow wave resonance associated to a degenerate band edge (DBE) in the dispersion diagram for a special class of photonic crystals supporting two modes at each frequency. We show that the gain enhancement in a Fabry-Perot cavity (FPC) when operating at the DBE is several orders of magnitude stronger when compared to a cavity of the same length made of a standard photonic crystal with a regular band edge (RBE). The giant gain condition is explained by a significant increase in the photon lifetime and in th…
Nonlinear topological photonics, which explores topics common to the fields of topological phases and nonlinear optics, is expected to open up a new paradigm in topological photonics. Here, we demonstrate second-harmonic generation (SHG) via nonlinear interaction of double topological valley-Hall kink modes in all-dielectric photonic crystals (PhCs). We first show that two topological frequency bandgaps can be created around a pair of frequencies, $ω_0$ and $2ω_0$, by gapping out the corresponding Dirac points in two-dimensional honeycomb PhCs. Valley-Hall kink modes along a kink-type domain w…
The photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) is generally believed to be a result of an effective spin-orbit coupling, which describes the mutual influence of the spin (polarization) and the trajectory of the light beam. The photonic SHE holds great potential for precision metrology owing to the fact that the spin-dependent splitting in photonic SHE are sensitive to the physical parameter variations of different systems. Remarkably, using the weak measurements, this tiny spin-dependent shifts can be detected with the desirable accuracy so that the corresponding physical parameters can be determined. He…
Optical rotation is experimentally demonstrated in a semiconductor-based three-dimensional chiral photonic crystal (PhC) at a telecommunication wavelength. We design a rotationally-stacked woodpile PhC structure, where neighboring layers are rotated by 45 degrees and four layers construct a single helical unit. The mirror-asymmetric PhC made from GaAs with sub-micron periodicity is fabricated by a micro-manipulation technique. The linearly polarized light incident on the structure undergoes optical rotation during transmission. The obtained results show good agreement with numerical simulation…
We theoretically predict a giant quantized Goos-Hänchen (GH) effect on the surface of graphene in quantum Hall regime. The giant quantized GH effect manifests itself as an angular shift whose quantized step reaches the order of mrad for light beams impinging on a graphene-on-substrate system. The quantized GH effect can be attributed to quantized Hall conductivity, which corresponds to the discrete Landau levels in quantum Hall regime. We find that the quantized step can be greatly enhanced for incident angles near the Brewster angle. Moreover, the Brewster angle is sensitive to the Hall condu…
Due to their large electric conductivity, stand-alone metallic films are highly reflective at microwave frequencies. For this reason, it is nearly impossible to observe Faraday rotation in ferromagnetic metal layers, even in films just tens of nanometers thick. Here, we show using numerical simulations that a stack of cobalt nano-layers interlaced between dielectric layers can become highly transmissive and display a large Faraday rotation in a finite frequency band. A 45-degree Faraday rotation can be achieved with metallic ferromagnetic layers as thin as tens of nanometers.
Rapidly developing photonics brings many interesting resonant optical phenomena, in which the Fano resonance (FR) always intrigues researchers because of its applications in optical switching and sensing. However, its sensitive dependence on environmental conditions makes it hard to implement in experiments. We in this work suggest a topologically-protected FR based on the photonic valley Hall insulators, immune to the system impurities. The topologically-protected FR is achieved by coupling the valley-dependent topological edge states (TESs) with one double-degenerate cavity. The $δ$-type pho…

The photonic spin Hall effect (SHE), featured by a spin-dependent transverse shift of an impinging optical beam driven by its polarization handedness, has many applications including precise metrology and spin-based nanophotonic devices. It is highly desirable to control and enhance the photonic SHE. However, such a goal remains elusive, due to the weak spin-orbit interaction of light, especially for systems with optical loss. Here we reveal a flexible way to modulate the photonic SHE via exceptional points, by exploiting the transverse shift in a parity-time (PT) symmetric system with balance…
We investigate Rabi-like oscillations of topological valley Hall edge states by introducing two zigzag domain walls in an inversion-symmetry-breaking honeycomb photonic lattice. Such resonant oscillations are stimulated by weak periodic modulation of the lattice depth along the propagation direction that does not affect the overall symmetry and the band topology of the lattice. Oscillations are accompanied by periodic switching between edge states with the same Bloch momentum, but located at different domain walls. Switching period and efficiency are the nonmonotonic functions of the Bloch mom…
We develop a geometric photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) which manifests as spin-dependent shift in momentum space. It originates from an effective space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase created by artificially engineering the polarization distribution of the incident light. Unlikely the previously reported PSHE involving the light-matter interaction, the resulting spin-dependent splitting in the geometric PSHE is purely geometrically depend upon the polarization distribution of light which can be tailored by assembling its circular polarization basis with suitably magnitude and phase. Thi…
We present a quantum theoretical treatment of light-matter coupling in the system consisting of a quantum dot and a spherical core-shell metal-dielectric multilayer nanoparticle. It is shown that both weak and strong coupling regimes can be realized in the set-up. Specifically, we demonstrate a strong coupling regime between a quantum dot and a nanoparticle, when the quantum dot resonance is tuned to the frequency at which normal component of effective nanoparticle permittivity is crossing zero. Moreover, we demonstrate the regime at which the quantum dot decays much faster than in vacuum (due…
We experimentally realize a photonic analogue of the anomalous quantum Hall insulator using a two-dimensional (2D) array of coupled ring resonators. Similar to the Haldane model, our 2D array is translation invariant, has zero net gauge flux threading the lattice, and exploits next-nearest neighbor couplings to achieve a topologically non-trivial bandgap. Using direct imaging and on-chip transmission measurements, we show that the bandgap hosts topologically robust edge states. We demonstrate a topological phase transition to a conventional insulator by frequency detuning the ring resonators a…
Based on quantum field theory, we formulate the Wigner function and quantum kinetic theory for polarized photons in curved spacetimes which admit a covariantly constant timelike vector. From this framework, the photonic chiral/zilch vortical effects are reproduced in a rigidly rotating coordinate. In a spatially inhomogeneous coordinate, we derive the spin Hall effect for the photon helicity current and energy current in equilibrium. Our derivation reveals that such photonic Hall effect are related to the photonic vortical effect via the Lorentz invariance and their transport coefficients matc…
Photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) holds great potential applications in precision metrology. How to obtain a high measurement precision is an important issue to detect the photonic SHE. In this letter, we propose using optimal preselection and postselection in weak measurements to enhance the measurement precision. We find that the maximum weak value and pointer shift can be obtained with an optimal overlap of preselection and postselection states. These findings offer the possibility for improving the precision of weak measurements and thereby have possible applications for accurately character…
Photonic spin Hall effect is a manifestation of spin-orbit interaction of light and can be measured by a transverse shift λof photons with opposite spins. The precise measurement of transverse shifts can enable many spin-related applications, such as precise metrology and optical sensing. However, this transverse shift is generally small (i.e. δ/λ<{10}^{-1}, λis the wavelength), which impedes its precise measurement. To-date proposals to generate giant spin Hall effect (namely with δ/λ>{10}^{2}) have severe limitations, particularly its occurrence only over a narrow angular cone (with a width …
We propose a set of three simple photonic platforms capable of emulating quantum topologically insulating phases corresponding to Hall, spin-Hall, and valley-Hall effects. It is shown that an interface between any two of these heterogeneous photonic topological insulators supports scattering-free surface states. Spin and valley degrees of freedom characterizing such topologically protected surface waves determine their unique pathways through complex photonic circuits comprised of multiple heterogeneous interfaces.
We study the spin-orbit coupling induced by the splitting between TE and TM optical modes in a photonic honeycomb lattice. Using a tight-binding approach, we calculate analytically the band structure. Close to the Dirac point,we derive an effective Hamiltonian. We find that the local reduced symmetry ($\mathrm{D_{3h}}$) transforms the TE-TM effective magnetic field into an emergent field with a Dresselhaus symmetry. As a result, particles become massive, but no gap opens. The emergent field symmetry is revealed by the optical spin Hall effect.
The formation of a superstructure - with a related Moiré pattern - plays a crucial role in the extraordinary optical and electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene, including the recently observed unconventional superconductivity. Here we put forward a novel, interdisciplinary approach to determine the Moiré angle in twisted bilayer graphene based on the photonic spin Hall effect. We show that the photonic spin Hall effect exhibits clear fingerprints of the underlying Moiré pattern, and the associated light beam shifts are well beyond current experimental sensitivities in the near-infra…
We obtain a general result for the Lamb shift of excited states of multi-level atoms in inhomogeneous electromagnetic structures and apply it to study atomic hydrogen in inverse-opal photonic crystals. We find that the photonic-crystal environment can lead to very large values of the Lamb shift, as compared to the case of vacuum. We also predict that the position-dependent Lamb shift should extend from a single level to a mini-band for an assemble of atoms with random distribution in space, similar to the velocity-dependent Doppler effect in atomic/molecular gases.
Spontaneous emission of an excited atom in a featureless continuum of electromagnetic modes is a fundamental process in quantum electrodynamics associated with an exponential decay of the quantum emitter to its ground state accompanied by an irreversible emission of a photon. However, such a simple scenario is deeply modified when considering a $^{\prime}$giant$^{\prime}$ atom, i.e an atom whose dimension is larger than the wavelength of the emitted photon. In such an unconventional regime, non-Markovian effects and strong deviations from an exponential decay are observed owing to interference…
We predict the existence and study properties of the valley Hall edge solitons in a composite photonic graphene with a domain wall between two honeycomb lattices with broken inversion symmetry. Inversion symmetry in our system is broken due to detuning introduced into constituent sublattices of the honeycomb structure. We show that nonlinear valley Hall edge states with sufficiently high amplitude bifurcating from the linear valley Hall edge state supported by the domain wall, can split into sets of bright spots due to development of the modulational instability, and that such an instability i…
We experimentally demonstrate topological edge states arising from the valley-Hall effect in twodimensional honeycomb photonic lattices with broken inversion symmetry. We break inversion symmetry by detuning the refractive indices of the two honeycomb sublattices, giving rise to a boron nitride-like band structure. The edge states therefore exist along the domain walls between regions of opposite valley Chern numbers. We probe both the armchair and zig-zag domain walls and show that the former become gapped for any detuning, whereas the latter remain ungapped until a cutoff is reached. The val…
Weak measurement is an important technique for detecting the tiny spin-dependent splitting in photonic spin Hall effect. The weak measurement is only valid when the probe wavefunction remains almost undisturbed during the procedure of measurements. However, it does not always satisfy such condition in some practical situations, such as in the strong-coupling regime or the preselected and postselected states are nearly orthogonal. In this paper, we develop a modified weak measurement for detecting photonic spin Hall effect when the probe wavefunction is distorted. We find that the measuring pro…
Symmetry-protected photonic topological insulator exhibiting robust pseudo-spin-dependent transportation, analogous to quantum spin Hall (QSH) phases and topological insulators, are of great importance in fundamental physics. Such transportation robustness is protected by time-reversal symmetry. Since electrons (fermion) and photons (boson) obey different statistics rules and associate with different time-reversal operators (i.e., Tf and Tb, respectively), whether photonic counterpart of Kramers degeneracy is topologically protected by bosonic Tb remains unidentified. Here, we construct the de…
The study of spin-orbit coupling of photons has attracted much attention in recent years, and leads to many potential applications in optics. In the recently discovered metamaterial -- photonic crystals with Weyl points, the pseudospin-orbit coupling of photons bears a resemblance to the spin-orbit coupling. We study the pseudospin Hall effect of light in such metamaterials and find that during total reflection, the light beam experiences a transverse shift that is proportional to the pseudospin (or the monopole charge) of the Weyl point. As the spin Hall effect has inspired many works to expl…
The polarization controlled optical signal routing has many important applications in photonics such as polarization beam splitter. By using two-dimensional transmission lines with lumped elements, we experimentally demonstrate the selective excitation of guided modes in waveguides composed of two kinds of single-negative metamaterials. A localized, circularly polarized emitter placed near the interface of the two kinds of single-negative metamaterials only couples with one guided mode with a specific propagating direction determined by the polarization handedness of the source. Moreover, this…
