We analyze the topological properties of a chiral ${p}+i{p}$ superconductor for a two-dimensional metal/semimetal with four Dirac points. Such a system has been proposed to realize second-order topological superconductivity and host corner Majorana modes. We show that with an additional $\mathsf{C}_4$ rotational symmetry, the system is in an intrinsic higher-order topological superconductor phase, and with a lower and more natural $\mathsf{C}_2$ symmetry, is in a boundary-obstructed topological superconductor phase. The boundary topological obstruction is protected by a bulk Wannier gap. However, we show that the well-known nested-Wilson loop is in general unquantized despite the particle-hole symmetry, and thus fails as a topological invariant. Instead, we show that the higher-order topology and boundary-obstructed topology can be characterized using an alternative defect classification approach, in which the corners of a finite sample is treated as a defect of a space-filling Hamiltonian. We establish "Dirac+$({p}+i{p})$" as a sufficient condition for second-order topological superconductivity.
It is known that in some higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs), topological phases are distinguished not by gap closings of bulk states but by those of edge states, which are called boundary-obstructed topological phases (BOTPs). In this paper, we construct an effective theory of the BOTP transition of two-dimensional (2D) Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model in a uniform magnetic field. At $π$ flux per plaquette, this model corresponds to the typical model of HOTIs proposed by Benalcazar, Bernevig, and Hughes (BBH). The BBH model can be approximated by Dirac fermions with two kinds of mass …
Non-trivial topology and unconventional pairing are two central guiding principles in the contemporary search for and analysis of superconducting materials and heterostructure compounds. Previously, a topological superconductor has been predominantly conceived to result from a topologically non-trivial band subject to intrinsic or external superconducting proximity effect. Here, we propose a new class of topological superconductors which are uniquely induced by unconventional pairing. They exhibit a boundary-obstructed higher-order topological character and, depending on their dimensionality, …
The bulk-edge correspondence characterizes topological insulators and superconductors. We generalize this concept to the bulk-corner correspondence and the edge-corner correspondence in two dimensions. In the bulk-corner (edge-corner) correspondence, the topological number is defined for the bulk (edge), while the topological phase is evidenced by the emergence of zero-energy corner states. It is shown that the boundary-obstructed topological phases recently proposed are the edge-corner-correspondence type, while the higher-order topological phases are classified into the bulk-corner-correspon…
Since the proposal of monopole Cooper pairing in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 067003 (2018)], considerable research efforts have been dedicated to the study of Cooper pairing order parameters constrained (or obstructed) by the nontrivial normal-state band topology at Fermi surfaces in 3D systems. In the current work, we generalize the topologically obstructed pairings between Chern states (like the monopole Cooper pairing) by proposing Euler obstructed Cooper pairing in 3D systems. The Euler obstructed Cooper pairing widely exists between two Fermi surfaces with nontrivial band topology characterize…
We study the stability against disorder of surface states of weak $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators (superconductors) which are stacks of strong $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators (superconductors), considering representative Dirac Hamiltonians in the Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes in various spatial dimensions. We show that, in the absence of disorder, surface Dirac fermions of weak $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators (superconductors) can be gapped out by a Dirac mass term which couples surface Dirac cones and leads to breaking of a translation symmetry (dimerization). The dimer…
We calculate the transmission of electrons and holes between two normal-metal electrodes (N), separated over a distance L by an impurity-free superconductor (S) with d-wave symmetry of the order parameter. Nodal lines of vanishing excitation gap form ballistic conduction channels for coupled electron-hole excitations, described by an anisotropic two-dimensional Dirac equation. We find that the transmitted electrical and thermal currents, at zero energy, both have the pseudodiffusive 1/L scaling characteristic of massless Dirac fermions - regardless of the presence of tunnel barriers at the NS …
Superconductivity in topological band structures is a platform for many novel exotic quantum phenomena such as emergent supersymmetry. This potential nourishes the search for topological materials with intrinsic superconducting instabilities, in which Cooper pairing is introduced to electrons with helical spin texture such as the Dirac states of topological insulators and Dirac Semimetals, forming a natural topological superconductor of helical kind. We employ first-principles calculations, ARPES experiments and new theoretical analysis to reveal that PbTaSe2, a non-centrosymmetric superconduc…
This work presents a novel approach to describe spectral properties of graphene layers with well defined edges. We microscopically analyze the boundary problem for the continuous Bogoliubov-de Gennes-Dirac (BdGD) equations and derive the Green functions for normal and superconducting graphene layers. Importing the idea used in tight-binding (TB) models of a microscopic hopping that couples different regions, we are able to set up and solve an algebraic Dyson's equation describing a graphene-superconductor junction. For this coupled system we analytically derive the Green functions and use them…
Superconductivity and quantum Hall effect are distinct states of matter occurring in apparently incompatible physical conditions. Recent theoretical developments suggest that the coupling of quantum Hall effect with a superconductor can provide a fertile ground for realizing exotic topological excitations such as non-abelian Majorana fermions or Fibonacci particles. As a step toward that goal, we report observation of Andreev reflection at the junction of a quantum Hall edge state in a single layer graphene and a quasi-two dimensional niobium diselenide (NbSe2) superconductor. Our principal fi…
Superconducting and topological states are two distinct quantum states of matter. Superconductors with topologically nontrivial electronic states provide a platform to study the interplay between them. Recent study revealed that a bulk superconductor PdTe2 is a topological Dirac semimetal with type-II Dirac fermions. However, the Dirac fermions in PdTe2 have no contribution to the superconducting pair because the Dirac points reside far below the Fermi level (EF). Here, we show that in the isostructural compounds (Ir1-xPtx)Te2, the type-II Dirac points can be adjusted to EF by element substitu…
We show that the interplay of cyclotron motion and Andreev reflection experienced by massless-Dirac-like charge carriers in topological-insulator surface states generates a Majorana-particle excitation. Based on an envelope-function description of the Dirac-Andreev edge states, we discuss the kinematic properties of the Majorana mode and find them to be possible to be tuned by changing the superconductor's chemical potential and/or the magnitude of the perpendicular magnetic field. Our proposal opens up new possibilities for studying Majorana fermions in a controllable setup.
Despite extensive search for about a decade, specular Andreev reflection is only recently realized in bilayer graphene-superconductor interface. However, the evolution from the typical retro type Andreev reflection to the unique specular Andreev reflection in single layer graphene has not yet been observed. We investigate this transition by measuring the differential conductance at the van der Walls interface of single layer graphene and NbSe2 superconductor. We find that the normalized conductance becomes suppressed as we pass through the Dirac cone via tuning the Fermi level and bias energy,…
In the heterostructure composed of a topological insulator sandwiched by two s-wave superconductors, the time reversal invariant topological superconducting phase, possessing helical Majorana edge modes, is found to exist when the two s-wave superconductors form a Josephson junction with a pi phase shift. Based on such a heterostructure, a helical Dirac-Majorana interferometer is proposed to directly measure a unique transport signature of the helical Majorana modes. Furthermore, we envision how our proposal can be realized on the basis of existing materials such as Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3 thin films…
Pseudo-diffusive conduction at the Dirac point of a normal-superconductor junction in graphene
We consider the effect of disorder on the spectrum of quasiparticles in the point-node and nodal-line superconductors. Due to the anisotropic dispersion of quasiparticles disorder scattering may render the Hamiltonian describing these excitations non-Hermitian. Depending on the dimensionality of the system, we show that the nodes in the spectrum are replaced by Fermi arcs or Fermi areas bounded by exceptional points or exceptional lines, respectively. These features are illustrated by first considering a model of a proximity-induced superconductor in an anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) Dirac s…
Nonunitary superconductivity has attracted renewed interest as a novel gapless phase of matter. In this study, we investigate the superconducting gap structure of nonunitary odd-parity chiral pairing states in a superconductor involving strong spin-orbit interactions. By applying a group theoretical classification of chiral states in terms of discrete rotation symmetry, we categorized all possible point-nodal gap structures in nonunitary chiral states into four types in terms of the topological number of nodes and node positions relative to the rotation axis. In addition to conventional Dirac …
Topological nodal superconductors possess gapless low energy excitations that are characterized by point or line nodal Fermi surfaces. In this work, using a coupled wire construction, we study topological nodal superconductors that have protected Dirac nodal points. In this construction, the low-energy electronic degrees of freedom are confined in a three dimensional array of wires, which emerge as pairing vortices of a microscopic superconducting system. The vortex array harbors an antiferromagnetic time-reversal and a mirror glide symmetry that protect the massless Dirac fermion in the singl…
We introduce the concept of 3D Dirac (Weyl) superconductors (SC), which have protected bulk four(two)-fold nodal points and surface Andreev arcs at zero energy. We provide a sufficient criterion for realizing them in centrosymmetric SCs with odd-parity pairing and mirror symmetry, e.g., the nodal phases of Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Pairs of Dirac nodes appear in a mirror-invariant plane when the mirror winding number is nontrivial. Breaking mirror symmetry may gap Dirac nodes producing a topological SC. Each Dirac node evolves to a nodal ring when inversion-gauge symmetry is broken. A Dirac node may…
We examine the low energy effective theory of phase oscillations in a two-dimensional granular superconducting sheet where the grains are arranged in honeycomb lattice structure. Using the example of graphene we present the evidence for the engineered Dirac nodes in the bosonic excitations: the spectra of the collective bosonic modes cross at the K and K points in the Brillouin zone and form Dirac nodes. We show how two different types of collective phase oscillations are obtained and that they are analogous to the Leggett and the Bogoliubov-Anderson-Gorkov modes in a two-band superconductor. …
We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductor candidate Tl2Mo6Se6 consisting of weakly-coupled Mo3Se3 chains. We found a quasi-1D Fermi surface arising from a Dirac-like energy band, which is associated with the nonsymmorphic screw symmetry of the chains and predicted to trigger topological superconductivity. We observed a significant spectral-weight reduction over a wide energy range, together with a tiny Fermi-edge structure which exhibits a signature of a superconducting-gap opening below the supercon…
The interplay of graphene and superconductivity has attracted great interest for understanding the two-dimensional Dirac Fermion physics and for superconducting device applications. In previous work, graphene-superconductor junctions fabricated on standard SiO2 substrates were highly disordered. Due to charge carrier scattering and potential fluctuations, the expected intrinsic properties of graphene combined with superconductors remained elusive to experimental observations. We propose suspended graphene-superconductor junctions as an effective solution to the problem. Here, we show the fabri…
Two-dimensional second-order topological superconductors host zero-dimensional Majorana bound states at their boundaries. In this work, focusing on rotation-invariant crystalline topological superconductors, we establish a bulk-boundary correspondence linking the presence of such Majorana bound states to bulk topological invariants introduced by Benalcazar et al. We thus establish when a topological crystalline superconductor protected by rotational symmetry displays second-order topological superconductivity. Our approach is based on stacked Dirac Hamiltonians, using which we relate transitio…
We propose a new type of topological surface modes having cubic dispersion in three-dimensional topological superconductors. Lower order dispersions are prohibited by the threefold rotational symmetry and time-reversal symmetry. Cooper pairing in the bulk changes sign under improper rotations, akin to$^{3}$He-B. The surface manifestations are a divergent surface density of states at the Fermi level and isospins that rotate three times as they circle the origin in momentum space. We propose that Heusler alloys with band inversion are candidate materials to harbor the novel topological supercond…
We theoretically investigate the emergence of non-hermitian physics at the heterojunction of a type-II Dirac semi-metal (DSM) and a dirty superconductor (DSC). The non-hermiticity is introduced in the DSM through the self-energy term incorporated via the dirtiness of the superconducting material. This causes the spectra of the effective Hamiltonian to become complex, which gives rise to the appearance of the exceptional points (EPs). This complex self energy, apart from having a frequency dependence, also acquires spatial dependence as well, which is unique and can provide interesting effects …
We introduce higher-order topological Dirac superconductor (HOTDSC) as a new gapless topological phase of matter in three dimensions, which extends the notion of Dirac phase to a higher-order topological version. Topologically distinct from the traditional topological superconductors and known Dirac superconductors, a HOTDSC features helical Majorana hinge modes between adjacent surfaces, which are direct consequences of the symmetry-protected higher-order band topology manifesting in the system. Specifically, we show that rotational, spatial inversion, and time-reversal symmetries together pr…
A graphene superlattice is formed by a one-dimensional periodic potential and is characterized by the emergence of new Dirac points in the electronic structure. The group velocity of graphene's massless Dirac fermions at the new points is drastically reduced, resulting in a measurable effect in the conductance spectroscopy. We show here that tunnel spectroscopy using a superconducting hybrid junction is more sensitive to the formation of Dirac points in the spectrum of graphene superlattices due to the additional contribution of Andreev processes. We examine the transport properties of a graph…
We discuss the effects of disorder in time-reversal invariant topological insulators and superconductors in three spatial dimensions. For three-dimensional topological insulator in symplectic (AII) symmetry class, the phase diagram in the presence of disorder and a mass term, which drives a transition between trivial and topological insulator phases, is computed numerically by the transfer matrix method. The numerics is supplemented by a field theory analysis (the large-$N_f$ expansion where $N_f$ is the number of valleys or Dirac cones), from which we obtain the correlation length exponent, a…
We propose the magnetoplasmon resonance technique to investigate two-dimensional superconductors (taking MoS$_2$ as an example) in the fluctuating regime, where the temperature is slightly above the critical temperature of the superconducting transition. Thus, unpaired electrons and fluctuating Cooper pairs coexist in the system and interact with each other via long-range Coulomb forces, forming a Bose-Fermi mixture. We expose the sample to external time-dependent electromagnetic field with a frequency in sub-terahertz range and a permanent magnetic field, and show that the magnetoplasmon resp…

We provide an argument based on flux insertion to show that certain superconductors with a non-trivial topological invariant have protected zero modes in their vortex cores. This argument has the flavor of a two dimensional index theorem and applies to disordered systems as well. It also provides a new way of understanding the zero modes in the vortex cores of a spinless $p_{x} + i p_{y}$ superconductor. Applying this approach to superconductors with and without time reversal and spin rotational symmetry, we predict the necessary and sufficient conditions for protected zero modes to exist in t…
The non-trivial geometry encoded in the Quantum Mechanical wavefunctions has important consequences for its single-particle as well as many-body dynamics. Yet, our understanding of how the geometry of the single-particle eigenstates are manifest in the characteristics of a many-particle system is still incomplete. Here, we demonstrate how the single-particle Berry curvature modifies the fluxoid quantization of a two dimensional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductor, and discuss the experimental scenarios where this anomalous quantization is expected to be realized.
We study three dimensional systems where the parent metallic state contains a loop of Weyl or Dirac points. We introduce the minimal $\vec{k} \cdot \vec{p}$ Hamiltonian , and discuss its symmetries. Guided by this symmetry analysis, we classify the superconducting instabilities that may arise. For a doped Weyl loop material, we argue that - independent of microscopic details - the leading superconducting instability should be to a fully gapped chiral superconductor in three dimensions- an unusual state made possible only by the non-trivial topology of the Fermi surface. This state - which we d…
Based on the BTK theory, we investigate the tunneling conductance in a uniaxially strained graphene-based normal metal (NG)/ barrier (I)/superconductor (SG) junctions. In the present model, we assume that depositing the conventional superconductor on the top of the uniaxially strained graphene, normal graphene may turn to superconducting graphene with the Cooper pairs formed by the asymmetric Weyl-Dirac electrons, the massless fermions with direction-dependent velocity. The highly asymmetrical velocity, vy/vx>>1, may be created by strain in the zigzag direction near the transition point betwee…
We classify topological insulators and superconductors in the presence of additional symmetries such as reflection or mirror symmetries. For each member of the 10 Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes, we have a Clifford algebra defined by operators of the generic (time-reversal, particle-hole, or chiral) symmetries and additional symmetries, together with gamma matrices in Dirac Hamiltonians representing topological insulators and superconductors. Following Kitaev's approach, we classify gapped phases of non-interacting fermions under additional symmetries by examining all possible distinct Dira…
In Dirac materials, the low energy excitations behave like ultra-relativistic massless particles with linear energy dispersion. A particularly intriguing phenomenon arises with the intrinsic charge transport behavior at the Dirac point where the charge density approaches zero. In graphene, a 2-D Dirac fermion system, it was predicted that charge transport near the Dirac point is carried by evanescent modes, resulting in unconventional pseudo-diffusive charge transport even in the absence of disorder. In the past decade, experimental observation of this phenomenon remained challenging due to th…
The presence or absence of certain symmetries in the normal state (NS) also determines the symmetry of the Cooper pairs. Here we show that parity (${\mathcal P}$) and time-reversal (${\mathcal T}$) odd Dirac insulators (trivial or topological) or metals, sustain a local or intra-unit cell pairing that supports corner (in $d=2$) or hinge (in $d=3$) modes of Majorana fermions and stands as a higher-order topological superconductor (HOTSC), when the NS additionally breaks discrete four-fold ($C_4$) symmetry. Although these outcomes does not rely on the existence of a Fermi surface, around it (whe…
In a flat band superconductor, the charge carriers' group velocity vF is extremely slow, quenching their kinetic energy. The emergence of superconductivity thus appears paradoxical, as conventional BCS theory implies a vanishing coherence length, superfluid stiffness, and critical current. Here, using twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG), we explore the profound effect of vanishingly small vF in a Dirac superconducting flat band system Using Schwinger-limited non-linear transport studies, we demonstrate an extremely slow vF ~ 1000 m/s for filling fraction nu between -1/2 and -3/4 of the moire super…
We have theoretically explored the intrinsic spin Hall effect (SHE) in the iron-based superconductor family with a variety of materials. The study is motivated by an observation that, in addition to an appreciable spin-orbit coupling in the Fe 3d states, a character of the band structure in which Dirac cones appear below the Fermi energy may play a crucial role in producing a large SHE. Our investigation does indeed predict a substantially large spin Hall conductivity in the heavily hole-doped regime such as KFe$_2$As$_2$. The magnitude of the SHE has turned out to be comparable with that for …
Coexistence of Chiral Majorana Edge States and Bogoliubov Fermi Surfaces in Two-Dimensional Nonsymmorphic Dirac Semimetal/Superconductor Heterostructures
We identify three-dimensional higher-order superconductors characterized by the coexistence of one-dimensional Majorana hinge states and gapless surface sates. We show how such superconductors can be obtained starting from the model of a spinful quadrupolar semimetal with two orbitals and adding an s-wave superconducting pairing term. By considering all the possible s-wave pairings satisfying Fermi-Dirac statistics we obtain six different superconducting models. We find that for two of these models a flat-band of hinge Majorana states coexist with surface states, and that these models have a n…
Topological superconductor (TSC) hosting Majorana fermions has been established as a milestone that may shift our scientific trajectory from research to applications in topological quantum computing. Recently, superconducting Pd-Bi binaries have attracted great attention as a possible medium for the TSC phase as a result of their large spin-orbit coupling strength. Here, we report a systematic high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on the normal state electronic structure of superconducting alpha-PdBi2 (Tc = 1.7 K). Our results show the presence of Dirac states…
We theoretically study the properties of thermal conductance in a normal-insulator-superconductor junction of silicene for both thin and thick barrier limit. We show that while thermal conductance displays the conventional exponential dependence on temperature, it manifests a nontrivial oscillatory dependence on the strength of the barrier region. The tunability of the thermal conductance by an external electric field is also investigated. Moreover, we explore the effect of doping concentration on thermal conductance. In the thin barrier limit, the period of oscillations of the thermal conduct…
Majorana zero modes (MZMs), fundamental building blocks for realizing topological quantum computers, can appear at the interface between a superconductor and a topological material. One of the experimental signatures that has been widely pursued to confirm the existence of MZMs is the observation of a large, quantized zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in the differential conductance measurements. In this Letter, we report observation of such a large ZBCP in junction structures of normal metal (titanium/gold Ti/Au) + Dirac semimetal (cadmium arsenide Cd3As2) + conventional superconductor (alumi…
We discuss the proximate phases of a three-dimensional system with Dirac-like dispersion. Using the cubic lattice with plaquette $π$-flux as a model, we find, among others phases, a chiral topological insulator and singlet topological superconductor. While the former requires a special "chiral" symmetry, the latter is stable as long as time reversal and SU(2) spin rotation symmetry are present. These phases are characterized by stable surface Dirac fermion modes, and by an integer topological invariant in the bulk. The key features of these phases are readily understood in a two dimensional li…

We numerically study weak, random, spatial velocity modulation ["quenched gravitational disorder" (QGD)] in two-dimensional massless Dirac materials. QGD couples to the spatial components of the stress tensor; the gauge-invariant disorder strength is encoded in the quenched curvature. Although expected to produce negligible effects, wave interference due to QGD transforms all but the lowest-energy states into a quantum-critical "stack" with universal, energy-independent spatial fluctuations. We study five variants of velocity disorder, incorporating three different local deformations of the Di…
We numerically investigate critically delocalized wavefunctions in models of 2D Dirac fermions, subject to vector potential disorder. These describe the surface states of 3D topological superconductors, and can also be realized through long-range correlated bond randomness in artificial materials like molecular graphene. A frozen regime can occur for strong disorder in these systems, wherein a single wavefunction presents a few localized peaks separated by macroscopic distances. Despite this rarefied spatial structure, we find robust correlations between eigenstates at different energies, at b…
We theoretically demonstrate that a ferromagnetic/superconductor junction on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TIs) has an anisotropic angle-dependent Andreev reflection when the in-plane magnetization has a component perpendicular to the junction. In the presence of in-plane magnetization, the Dirac cone's location adjusts in the $k$-space, whereas its out-of-plane component induces a gap. This movement leads to the anisotropic angle-dependent Andreev reflection and creates transverse conductance flows parallel to the interface. Also, an indirect gap induces in the j…
Under what conditions does a superconductor inherit topologically protected nodes from its parent normal state? In the context of Weyl semimetals with broken time-reversal symmetry, the pairing order parameter is classified by monopole harmonics and necessarily nodal [Li and Haldane, Phys. Rev. Lett., 120, 067003 (2018)]. Here, we show that a similar conclusion could also apply to 2D Dirac semimetals, although the conditions for the existence of nodes are more complex, depending on the pairing matrix structure in the valley and sublattice space. We analytically and numerically analyze the Bogo…
