We consider an aspect of the open problem: Does every square-integrable function on SU(2) have an almost everywhere convergent Fourier series? Let 0 < alpha < 1. We show that to each countable set E in SU(2) there corresponds an alpha-Holder continuous function on SU(2) whose Fourier series diverges on E. We also show that the Fourier series of each alpha-Holder continuous function on SU(2) converges almost everywhere.
We consider the open problem: Does every square-integrable function f on a compact, connected Lie group G have an almost everywhere convergent Fourier series? We prove a general theorem from which it follows that if the integral modulus of continuity of f is O(t^a) for some a > 0 then the Fourier series of f converges almost everywhere on G. In particular, the Fourier series of any Holder continuous function of degree a > 0 on G converges almost everywhere. On the other hand, we show that to each countable subset E of G = SU(2) and each 0 < a < 1 there corresponds an Holder continuous function…
Almost everywhere strong exponential summability of Fourier series in Walsh and trigonometric systems established by Rodin in 1990. We prove, that if the growth of a function $Φ(t):[0,\infty)\to[0,\infty)$ is bigger than the exponent, then the strong $Φ$-summability of a Walsh-Fourier series can fail everywhere. The analogous theorem for trigonometric system was proved before by one of the author of this paper.
In this paper we investigate the principle of the generalised localisation for spectral expansions of the polyharmonic operator, which coincides with the multiple Fourier integrals summed over the domains corresponding to the surface levels of the polyharmonic polynomials. It is proved that the partial sums of the multiple Fourier integrals of a function f\inL_2 (R^N ) converge to zero almost-everywhere on R^N\supp(f).
This article establishes a real-variable argument for Zygmund's theorem on almost everywhere convergence of strong arithmetic means of partial sums of Fourier series on $\mathbb{T}$, up to passing to a subsequence. Our approach extends to, among other cases, functions that are defined on $\mathbb{T}^d$, which allows us to establish an analogue of Zygmund's theorem in higher dimensions.
In 1987 Harris proved (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 101) - among others- that for each $1\le p<2$ there exists a two-dimensional function $f\in L^p$ such that its triangular Walsh-Fourier series diverges almost everywhere. In this paper we investigate the Fejér (or $(C,1)$) means of the triangle two variable Walsh-Fourier series of $L^1$ functions. Namely, we prove the a.e. convergence $σ_n^{\bigtriangleup}f = \frac{1}{n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}S_{k, n-k}f\to f$ ($n\to\infty$) for each integrable two-variable function $f$.
In this paper we study the local regularity of fractional integrals of Fourier series using several definitions of the Hölder exponent. We especially consider series coming from fractional integrals of modular forms. Our results show that in general cusp forms give rise to pure fractals (as opposed to multifractals). We include explicit examples and computer plots.
We study a.e. convergence on $L^p$, and Lorentz spaces $L^{p,q}$, $p>\tfrac{2d}{d-1}$, for variants of Riesz means at the critical index $d(\tfrac 12-\tfrac 1p)-\tfrac12$. We derive more general results for (quasi-)radial Fourier multipliers and associated maximal functions, acting on $L^2$ spaces with power weights, and their interpolation spaces. We also include a characterization of boundedness of such multiplier transformations on weighted $L^2$ spaces, and a sharp endpoint bound for Stein's square-function associated with the Riesz means.

The following problem is studied in this paper: Which multipliers $\{λ_{k, n}\}$ ensure the convergence, as $n\to \infty$, of the linear means of the Fourier series of functions $f\in L_1[-π, π]$ $$ \sum_{k=-\infty}^\infty λ_{k, n}\hat{f}_k e^{ikx}, $$ where $\widehat{f}_k$ is the $k$-th Fourier coefficient, at a point at which the derivative of the function $\int_0^x f$ exists. A criterion for the convergence of the $(C, 1)$-means ($λ_{k, n}=(1-\frac {|k|}{n+1})_+$) is found, while in the general case $λ_{k, n}=ϕ(\frac {k}{n+1})$ a sufficient condition is derived for the convergence at all su…
This paper studies a large class of continuous functions $f:[0,1]\to\mathbb{R}^d$ whose range is the attractor of an iterated function system $\{S_1,\dots,S_{m}\}$ consisting of similitudes. This class includes such classical examples as Pólya's space-filling curves, the Riesz-Nagy singular functions and Okamoto's functions. The differentiability of $f$ is completely classified in terms of the contraction ratios of the maps $S_1,\dots,S_{m}$. Generalizing results of Lax (1973) and Okamoto (2006), it is shown that either (i) $f$ is nowhere differentiable; (ii) $f$ is non-differentiable almost e…
We prove that, for functions in the Orlicz class LloglogLloglogloglogL, lacunary subsequences of the Fourier and the Walsh-Fourier series converge almost everywhere. Our integrability condition is less stringent than the homologous assumption in the almost everywhere convergence theorems of Lie (Fourier case) and Do-Lacey (Walsh-Fourier case), where the quadruple logarithmic term is replaced by a triple logarithm. Our proof of the Walsh-Fourier case is self-contained and, in antithesis to Do and Lacey's argument, avoids the use of Antonov's lemma, arguing directly via novel weak-L^p bounds for…
In this paper we study the a. e. strong convergence of the quadratical partial sums of the two-dimensional Walsh-Fourier series. Namely, we prove the a.e. relation $(\frac{1}{n}\sum\limits_{m=0}^{n-1}\left\vert S_{mm}f - f \right\vert^{p})^{1/p}\rightarrow 0$ for every two-dimensional functions belonging to $L\log L$ and $0<p\le 2$. From the theorem of Getsadze \cite{Gets} it follows that the space $L\log L$ can not be enlarged with preserving this strong summability property.
In this paper we extend classical Titchmarsh theorems on the Fourier transform of Hölder-Lipschitz functions to the setting of compact homogeneous manifolds. As an application, we derive a Fourier multiplier theorem for $L^2$-Hölder-Lipschitz spaces on compact Lie groups. We also derive conditions and a characterisation for Dini-Lipschitz classes on compact homogeneous manifolds in terms of the behaviour of their Fourier coefficients.

We prove that if a multiple trigonometric series is spherically Abel summable everywhere to an everywhere finite function $f(x)$ which is bounded below by an integrable function, then the series is the Fourier series of $f(x)$ if the coefficients of the multiple trigonometric series satisfy a mild growth condition. As a consequence, we show that if a multiple trigonometric series is spherically convergent everywhere to an everywhere finite integrable function $f(x)$, then the series is the Fourier series of $f(x)$. We also show that a singleton is a set of uniqueness. These results are general…
We construct a continuous function on the torus with almost everywhere divergence triangular sums of double Fourier series. An analogous theorem we also prove for eccentrical spherical sums.
Given a modular form which is not a cusp form $M_k(z)=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}r_ne^{2πinz}$ of weight $k \geq 4$, we define the series $M_{k,s}(x)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{r_n}{n^s}\sin(2πnx),$ which converges for all $x\in\mathbb{R}$ when $s>k$. In this paper, we compute the Hölder regularity exponent of $M_{k,s}$ at irrational points. In our analysis we apply wavelets methods proposed by Jaffard in 1996 in the study of the Riemann series. We find that the Hölder regularity exponent at a point $x$ is related to the fine diophantine properties of $x$, in a very precise way.
We consider spherical Riesz means of multiple Fourier series and some generalizations. While almost everywhere convergence of Riesz means at the critical index $(d-1)/2$ may fail for functions in the Hardy space $h^1(\mathbb T^d)$, we prove sharp positive results for strong summability almost everywhere. For functions in $L^p(\mathbb T^d)$, $1<p<2$, we consider Riesz means at the critical index $d(1/p-1/2)-1/2$ and prove an almost sharp theorem on strong summability. The results follow via transference from corresponding results for Fourier integrals. We include an endpoint bound on maximal op…
We obtain sufficient conditions for convergence (almost everywhere) of multiple trigonometric Fourier series of functions $f$ in $L_2$ in terms of Weyl multipliers. We consider the case where rectangular partial sums of Fourier series $S_n(x;f)$ have indices $n=(n_1,\dots,n_N) \in \mathbb Z^N$, $N\ge 3$, in which $k$ $(1\leq k\leq N-2)$ components on the places $\{j_1,\dots,j_k\}=J_k \subset \{1,\dots,N\} = M$ are elements of (single) lacunary sequences (i.e., we consider the, so called, multiple Fourier series with $J_k$-lacunary sequence of partial sums). We prove that for any sample $J_k\su…
Unlike the classical theory of Fourier series which deals with decomposition of a function into sinusoidal waves the Vilenkin (Walsh) functions are rectangular waves. The development of the theory of Vilenkin-Fourier series has been strongly influenced by the classical theory of trigonometric series but there are a lot of differences also. The aim of my master thesis is to discuss, develop and apply the newest developments of this fascinating theory connected to modern harmonic analysis. In particular, we investigate Nörlund means but only in the case when their coefficients are monotone and p…
We proved earlier that every measurable function on the circle, after a uniformly small perturbation, can be written as a power series (i.e. a series of exponentials with positive frequencies), which converges almost everywhere. Here we show that this result is basically sharp: the perturbation cannot be made smooth or even Hölder. We discuss also a similar problem for perturbations with lacunary spectrum.
In 1936 Zygmunt Zalcwasser asked with respect to the trigonometric system that how "rare" can a sequence of strictly monotone increasing integers $(n_j)$ be such that the almost everywhere relation $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{j=1}^N S_{n_j}f \to f$ is fulfilled for each integrable function $f$. In this paper, we give an answer to this question. It follows from the main result that this a.e. relation holds for every integrable function $f$ and lacunary sequence $(n_j)$ of natural numbers.
Let $G$ be a connected, simply connected, compact semisimple Lie group of dimension $n$. It has been shown by Clerc \cite{Clerc1974} that, for any $f\in L^1(G)$, the Bochner-Riesz mean $S_R^δ(f)$ converges almost everywhere to $f$, provided $δ>(n-1)/2$. In this paper, we show that, at the critical index $δ=(n-1)/2$, there exists an $f\in L^1(G)$ such that $$\limsup_{R\rightarrow\infty} \big|S_{R}^{(n-1)/2}(f)(x)\big|=\infty, \ \text{a.e.}\ x\in G.$$ This is an analogue of a well-known result of Kolmogorov \cite{Kolmogoroff1923} for Fourier series on the circle, and a result of Stein \cite{Stei…
We consider the summability of one- and multi-dimensional trigonometric Fourier series. The Fej{é}r and Riesz summability methods are investigated in detail. Different types of summation and convergence are considered. We will prove that the maximal operator of the summability means is bounded from the Hardy space $H_p$ to $L_p$, for all $p>p_0$, where $p_0$ depends on the summability method and the dimension. For $p=1$, we obtain a weak type inequality by interpolation, which ensures the almost everywhere convergence of the summability means. Similar results are formulated for the more genera…
We consider non oscillatory functions and prove an everywhere Fourier Inversion Theorem for functions of very moderate decrease. The proofs rely on some ideas in nonstandard analysis.
The classical example of no-where differentiable but everywhere continuous function is Weierstrass function. In this paper we define the fractional order Weierstrass function in terms of Jumarie fractional trigonometric functions. The Holder exponent and Box dimension of this function are calculated here. It is established that the Holder exponent and Box dimension of this fractional order Weierstrass function are the same as in the original Weierstrass function, independent of incorporating the fractional trigonometric function. This is new development in generalizing the classical Weierstras…
We prove non-trivial upper and lower bounds for the "Spectrum of Singularities" of Fourier Series with polynomial frequencies. The Spectrum of Singularities of a function f gives the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points with a given Hölder exponent for f.
A class of increasing sequences of natural numbers $(n_k)$ is found for which there exists a function $f\in L[0,1)$ such that the subsequence of partial Walsh-Fourier sums $(S_{n_k}(f))$ diverge everywhere. A condition for the growth order of a function $φ:[0,\infty)\rightarrow[0,\infty)$ is given fulfilment of which implies an existence of above type function $f$ in the class $φ(L)[0,1)$.
Let $A$ be an expansive dilation on $\mathbb{R}^n$, and $p(\cdot):\mathbb{R}^n\rightarrow(0,\,\infty)$ be a variable exponent function satisfying the globally log-Hölder continuous condition. Let $\mathcal{H}^{p(\cdot)}_A({\mathbb {R}}^n)$ be the variable anisotropic Hardy space defined via the non-tangential grand maximal function. In this paper, the authors obtain that the Fourier transform of $f\in \mathcal{H}^{p(\cdot)}_A({\mathbb {R}}^n)$ coincides with a continuous function $F$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ in the sense of tempered distributions. As applications, the authors further conclude a highe…
It is a classical result that dyadic partial sums of the Fourier series of functions $f \in L^p(\mathbb{T})$ converge almost everywhere for $p \in (1, \infty)$. In 1968, E. A. Bredihina established an analogous result for functions belonging to the Stepanov space of almost periodic functions $S^2$ whose Fourier exponents satisfy a natural separation condition. Here, the maximal operator corresponding to dyadic partial summation of almost periodic Fourier series is bounded on the Stepanov spaces $S^{2^k}$, $k \in \mathbb{N}$ for functions satisfying the same condition; Bredihina's result follow…
We prove a vector-valued version of Carleson's theorem: Let Y=[X,H]_t be a complex interpolation space between a UMD space X and a Hilbert space H. For p\in(1,\infty) and f\in L^p(T;Y), the partial sums of the Fourier series of f converge to f pointwise almost everywhere. Apparently, all known examples of UMD spaces are of this intermediate form Y=[X,H]_t. In particular, we answer affirmatively a question of Rubio de Francia on the pointwise convergence of Fourier series of Schatten class valued functions.
In this paper, we show that the expansions of functions from $L^p$-Paley-Wiener type spaces in terms of the prolate spheroidal wave functions converge almost everywhere for $1<p<\infty$, even in the cases when they might not converge in $L^p$-norm. We thereby consider the classical Paley-Wiener spaces $PW_c^p\subset L^p(\mathcal{R})$ of functions whose Fourier transform is supported in $[-c,c]$ and Paley-Wiener like spaces $B_{α,c}^p\subset L^p(0,\infty)$ of functions whose Hankel transform $\mathcal{H}^α$ is supported in $[0,c]$.As a side product, we show the continuity of the projection oper…
We investigate a known problem whether a Sobolev homeomorphism between domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ can change sign of the Jacobian. The only case that remains open is when $f\in W^{1,[n/2]}$, $n\geq 4$. We prove that if $n\geq 4$, and a sense-preserving homeomorphism $f$ satisfies $f\in W^{1,[n/2]}$, $f^{-1}\in W^{1,n-[n/2]-1}$ and either $f$ is Hölder continuous on almost all spheres of dimension $[n/2]$, or $f^{-1}$ is Hölder continuous on almost all spheres of dimensions $n-[n/2]-1$, then the Jacobian of $f$ is non-negative, $J_f\geq 0$, almost everywhere. This result is a consequence of a mo…
In this paper we investigate the boundedness properties of bilinear multiplier operators associated with unimodular functions of the form $m(ξ,η)=e^{i ϕ(ξ-η)}$. We prove that if $ϕ$ is a $C^1(\mathbb R^n)$ real-valued non-linear function, then for all exponents $p,q,r$ lying outside the local $L^2-$range and satisfying the Hölder's condition $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}=\frac{1}{r}$, the bilinear multiplier norm $$\|e^{iλϕ(ξ-η)}\|_{\mathcal M_{p,q,r}(\mathbb R^n)}\rightarrow \infty,~ λ\in \mathbb R,~ |λ|\rightarrow \infty.$$ For exponents in the local $L^2-$range, we give examples of unimodular fu…
An additive process is a stochastic process with independent increments and that is continuous in probability. In this paper, we study the almost sure Hausdorff and Fourier dimension of the graph of continuous additive additive processes with zero mean. Such processes can be represented as $X_t = B_{V(t)}$ where $B$ is Brownian motion and $V$ is a continuous increasing function. We show that these dimensions depend on the local uniform Hölder indices. In particular, if $V$ is locally uniformly bi-Lipschitz, then the Hausdorff dimension of the graph will be 3/2. We also show that the Fourier di…
We prove that if the system of integer translates of a square integrable function is $\ell^2$-linear independent then its periodization function is strictly positive almost everywhere. Indeed we show that the above inference is true for any square integrable function since the following statement on Fourier analysis is true: For any (Lebesgue) measurable subset A of [0,1], with positive measure, there exists a non trivial square summable function, with support in A, whose partial sums of Fourier series are uniformly bounded.
We provide a near-complete classification of the Lorentz spaces $Λ_φ$ for which the sequence $\{S_{n}\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of partial Fourier sums is almost everywhere convergent along lacunary subsequences. Moreover, under mild assumptions on the fundamental function $φ$, we identify $Λ_φ:= L\log\log L\log\log\log\log L$ as the \emph{largest} Lorentz space on which the lacunary Carleson operator is bounded as a map to $L^{1,\infty}$. In particular, we disprove a conjecture stated by Konyagin in his 2006 ICM address. Our proof relies on a newly introduced concept of a "Cantor Multi-tower Embed…
We consider the class of multiple Fourier series associated with functions in the Dirichlet space of the polydisc. We prove that every such series is summable with respect to unrestricted rectangular partial sums, everywhere except for a set of zero multi-parametric logarithmic capacity. Conversely, given a compact set in the torus of zero capacity, we construct a Fourier series in the class which diverges on this set, in the sense of Pringsheim. We also prove that the multi-parametric logarithmic capacity characterizes the exceptional sets for the radial variation and radial limits of Dirichl…
Let $p(\cdot):\ \mathbb{R}^n\to(0,1]$ be a variable exponent function satisfying the globally log-Hölder continuous condition and $A$ a general expansive matrix on $\mathbb{R}^n$. Let $H_A^{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ be the variable anisotropic Hardy space associated with $A$ defined via the radial maximal function. In this article, via the known atomic characterization of $H_{A}^{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and establishing two useful estimates on anisotropic variable atoms, the author shows that the Fourier transform $\widehat{f}$ of $f\in H_A^{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ coincides with a continuous…
Phase retrieval is concerned with recovering a function $f$ from the absolute value of its Fourier transform $|\widehat{f}|$. We study the stability properties of this problem in Lebesgue spaces. Our main results shows that $$ \| f-g\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)} \leq 2\cdot \| |\widehat{f}| - |\widehat{g}| \|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)} + h_f\left( \|f-g\|^{}_{L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)}\right) + J(\widehat{f}, \widehat{g}),$$ where $1 \leq p < 2$, $h_f$ is an explicit nonlinear function depending on the smoothness of $f$ and $J$ is an explicit term capturing the invariance under translations. A noteworthy aspect is …
