This paper is a new important step towards the complete classification of the finite simple groups which are $(2, 3)$-generated. In fact, we prove that the symplectic groups $Sp_{2n}(q)$ are $(2,3)$-generated for all $n\geq 4$. Because of the existing literature, this result implies that the groups $PSp_{2n}(q)$ are $(2,3)$-generated for all $n\geq 2$, with the exception of $PSp_4(2^f)$ and $PSp_4(3^f)$.
The spectra of a finite group is the set of its element orders. We obtain an arithmetic description of finite symplectic and orthogonal groups. In particular, a description of spectra of all finite simple simplectic and orthogonal groups is obtained.
We give an exact formula, as a function of m and q, for the maximum order of the elements of the finite symplectic group Sp(2m,q), with q even, and of its automorphism group.
For $g\in \mathbb{N}$, let $G=\Sp(2g,\mathbb{Z})$ be the integral symplectic group and $S(g)$ be the set of all positive integers which can occur as the order of an element in $G$. In this paper, we show that $S(g)$ is a bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}$ for all positive integers $g$. We also study the growth of the functions $f(g)=|S(g)|$, and $h(g)=max\{m\in \mathbb{N}\mid m\in S(g)\}$ and show that they have at least exponential growth.
We define a family of groups that include the mapping class group of a genus g surface with one boundary component and the integral symplectic group Sp(2g,Z). We then prove that these groups are finitely generated. These groups, which we call mapping class groups over graphs, are indexed over labeled simplicial graphs with 2g vertices. The mapping class group over the graph Gamma is defined to be a subgroup of the automorphism group of the right-angled Artin group A_Gamma of Gamma. We also prove that the kernel of the map Aut A_Gamma to Aut H_1(A_Gamma) is finitely generated, generalizing a th…
We refer to the set of the orders of elements of a finite group as its spectrum and say that finite groups are isospectral if their spectra coincide. In the paper we determine all finite groups isospectral to the simple groups $S_6(q)$, $O_7(q)$, and $O_8^+(q)$. In particular, we prove that with just four exceptions, every such a finite group is an extension of the initial simple group by a (possibly trivial) field automorphism.
We show that Nichols algebras of most simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over the projective symplectic linear group over a finite field, corresponding to unipotent orbits, have infinite dimension. We give a criterium to deal with unipotent classes of general finite simple groups of Lie type and apply it to regular classes
In this note we give a self-contained proof of the following classification (up to conjugation) of subgroups of the general symplectic group of dimension n over a finite field of characteristic l, for l at least 5, which can be derived from work of Kantor: G is either reducible, symplectically imprimitive or it contains Sp(n, l). This result is for instance useful for proving "big image" results for symplectic Galois representations.
Given a finite group $G$, denote by ${\rm D}(G)$ the degree pattern of $G$ and by ${\rm OC}(G)$ the set of all order components of $G$. Denote by $h_{\rm OD}(G)$ (resp. $h_{\rm OC}(G)$) the number of isomorphism classes of finite groups $H$ satisfying conditions $|H|=|G|$ and ${\rm D}(H)={\rm D}(G)$ (resp. ${\rm OC}(H)={\rm OC}(G)$). A finite group $G$ is called OD-characterizable (resp. OC-characterizable) if $h_{\rm OD}(G)=1$ (resp. $h_{\rm OC}(G)=1$). Let $C=C_p(2)$ be a symplectic group over binary field, for which $2^p-1>7$ is a Mersenne prime. The aim of this article is to prove that $h_…
Markov chains are used to give a purely probabilistic way of understanding the conjugacy classes of the finite symplectic and orthogonal groups in odd characteristic. As a corollary of these methods one obtains a probabilistic proof of Steinberg's count of unipotent matrices and generalizations of formulas of Rudvalis and Shinoda.
We define and study supercharacters of the classical finite unipotent groups of symplectic and orthogonal types (over any finite field of odd characteristic). We show how supercharacters for groups of those types can be obtained by restricting the supercharacter theory of the finite unitriangular group, and prove that supercharacters are orthogonal and provide a partition of the set of all irreducible characters. We also describe all irreducible characters of maximum degree in terms of the root system, and show how they can be obtained as constituents of particular supercharacters.
We show that Mukai's classification of finite groups which may act symplectically on a complex K3 surface extends to positive characteristic $p$ under the assumptions that (i) the order of the group is coprime to $p$ and (ii) either the surface or its quotient is not birationally isomorphic to a supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1. In the case without the assumption (ii) we classify all possible new groups which may appear. We prove that the assumption on the order of the group is always satisfied if $p > 11$ and if $p=2,3,5,11$ we give examples of K3 surfaces with finite symplecti…
Let $p$ be an odd prime with $p\equiv1\bmod 4$. Then for any odd power $q$ of $p$ and a positive integer $j$ we show that the groups $\text{Sp}_{p^j+1}(q),\text{PSp}_{p^j+1}(q)$, and their Sylow $p$-subgroups are non-$FSZ_{p^j}$.
We prove that when $q$ is a power of $2$, every complex irreducible representation of $\mathrm{Sp}(2n, \mathbb{F}_q)$ may be defined over the real numbers, that is, all Frobenius-Schur indicators are 1. We also obtain a generating function for the sum of the degrees of the unipotent characters of $\mathrm{Sp}(2n, \mathbb{F}_q)$, or of $\mathrm{SO}(2n+1, \mathbb{F}_q)$, for any prime power $q$.
For an integer $M\geq 2$ and a finite group $G$, an element $α\in G$ is called an $M$-th power if it satisfies $A^M=α$ for some $A\in G$. In this article, we will deal with the case when $G$ is finite symplectic or orthogonal group over a field of order $q$. We introduce the notion of $M^*$-power SRIM polynomials. This, amalgamated with the concept of $M$-power polynomial, we provide the complete classification of the conjugacy classes of regular semisimple, semisimple, cyclic and regular elements in $G$, which are $M$-th powers, when $(M,q)=1$. The approach here is of generating functions, as…
We define a cocycle on the group of symplectic diffeomorphisms of a symplectic manifold and investigate its properties. The main applications are concerned with symplectic actions of discrete groups. For example, we give an alternative proof of the Polterovich theorem about the distortion of cyclic subgroups in finitely generated groups of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms.
Suppose $\ell$ is a prime number, $\ell >3$, $K$ is a field that is an unramified finite extension of the field $\Q_\ell$ of $\ell$-adic numbers, and $G$ is a finite group that is a semi-direct product of a normal $\ell'$-subgroup $H$ and a cyclic $\ell$-group $L$. Suppose that the group algebra $K[H]$ is decomposable. If there exists an embedding of $G$ in the symplectic group $\Sp_{2d}(K)$ for some positive integer $d$, then there exists an embedding of $G$ in $\Sp_{2d}({\mathcal O}_K)$, where ${\mathcal O}_K$ is the ring of integers of $K$.
We define the superclasses for a classical finite unipotent group $U$ of type $B_{n}(q)$, $C_{n}(q)$, or $D_{n}(q)$, and show that, together with the supercharacters defined in a previous paper, they form a supercharacter theory. In particular, we prove that the supercharacters take a constant value on each superclass, and evaluate this value. As a consequence, we obtain a factorization of any superclass as a product of elementary superclasses. In addition, we also define the space of superclass functions, and prove that it is spanned by the supercharacters. As as consequence, we (re)obtain th…
Using Cohen's classification of symplectic reflection groups, we prove that the parabolic subgroups, that is, stabilizer subgroups, of a finite symplectic reflection group are themselves symplectic reflection groups. This is the symplectic analogue of Steinberg's Theorem for complex reflection groups. Using computational results required in the proof, we show the non-existence of symplectic resolutions for symplectic quotient singularities corresponding to three exceptional symplectic reflection groups, thus reducing further the number of cases for which the existence question remains open. An…
In the present paper we study two sequences of real numbers associated to a symplectic diffeomorphism: the uniform norm of the differential of its n-th iteration and the word length of its n-th iteration. In the latter case we assume that our diffeomorphism lies in a finitely generated group of symplectic diffeomorphisms. We find lower bounds on the growth rates of these sequences in a number of situations. These bounds depend on the symplectic geometry of the manifold rather than on the specific choice of a diffeomorphism. They are obtained by using recent results of Schwarz on Floer homology…
In view of a potential interpretation of the role of the Mathieu group M_24 in the context of strings compactified on K3 surfaces, we develop techniques to combine groups of symmetries from different K3 surfaces to larger 'overarching' symmetry groups. We construct a bijection between the full integral homology lattice of K3 and the Niemeier lattice of type (A_1)^24, which is simultaneously compatible with the finite symplectic automorphism groups of all Kummer surfaces lying on an appropriate path in moduli space connecting the square and the tetrahedral Kummer surfaces. The Niemeier lattice …
We construct analogues of FI-modules where the role of the symmetric group is played by the general linear groups and the symplectic groups over finite rings and prove basic structural properties such as Noetherianity. Applications include a proof of the Lannes--Schwartz Artinian conjecture in the generic representation theory of finite fields, very general homological stability theorems with twisted coefficients for the general linear and symplectic groups over finite rings, and representation-theoretic versions of homological stability for congruence subgroups of the general linear group, th…
