The developments of special relativity and quantum mechanics marked the beginning of the modern physics age. The former has taught us that while space and time are frame dependent notions, there is a quantity -- the space-time interval -- whose value all inertial observers agree upon. This reveals, so to speak, a genuine "fact" of the universe, a relativistic invariant. On the other hand, since the dawn of quantum mechanics, there is no consensus on what the theory is all about. The situation is admittedly subtler: quantum theory is grounded on a complex vector space and the very notions of observer and reference frame are controversial. Here we construct a theoretical framework within which a given combination of quantum resources is shown to be a Galilean invariant. To this end, we postulate a principle of relational symmetry between "the observer" and "the observed" and employ the notion of quantum reference frame. Unitary transformations then follow that allow us to perceive the physical resources seen from the viewpoint of any quantum system. Interestingly, we find that one needs more than quantum coherence and quantum correlations to prove quantum resources covariance. Finally, we show that the notion of physical reality implied by quantum mechanics is not absolute.
We revisit quantum-classical hybrid systems of the Sudarshan type under the light of Galilean covariance. We show that these kind of hybrids cannot be given as a unitary representation of the Galilei group and at the same time conserve the total linear momentum unless the interaction term only depends on the relative canonical velocities.

For systems analogous to a linear harmonic oscillator, the simplest way to characterize the state is by a covariance matrix containing the symmetrically-ordered moments of operators analogous to position and momentum. We show that using Stokes-like detectors without direct access to either position or momentum, the estimation of the covariance matrix of a macroscopic signal is still possible using interference with a classical noisy and low-intensity reference. Such a detection technique will allow to estimate macroscopic quantum states of electromagnetic radiation without a coherent high-inte…
The characterization of quantum correlations, being stronger than classical, yet weaker than those appearing in non-signaling models, still poses many riddles. In this work we show that the extent of binary correlations in a general class of nonlocal theories can be characterized by the~existence of a certain covariance matrix. The set of quantum realizable two-point correlators in the~bipartite case then arises from a subtle restriction on the structure of this general covariance matrix. We also identify a class of theories whose covariance does not have neither a quantum nor an "almost quant…

We derive steerability criteria applicable for both finite and infinite dimensional quantum systems using covariance matrices of local observables. We show that these criteria are useful to detect a wide range of entangled states particularly in high dimensional systems and that the Gaussian steering criteria for general M x N-modes of continuous variables are obtained as a special case. Extending from the approach of entanglement detection via covariance matrices, our criteria are based on the local uncertainty principles incorporating the asymmetric nature of steering scenario. Specifically,…
The covariance of the Schrödinger equation under Galilei boosts and the compatibility of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics with Einstein's equivalence principle have been constrained for so long to the existence of a superselection rule which would prevent a quantum particle from being found in superposition states of different masses. In an effort to avoid this expedient, and thus allow nonrelativistic quantum mechanics to account for unstable particles, recent works have suggested that the usual Galilean transformations are inconsistent with the nonrelativistic limit implied by the Lorentz t…
The last two decades have witnessed an increasing effort of the scientific community toward pursuing a better framework for quantum resource covariance, with the focus predominantly posed on quantum entanglement. In this work, we move the discussion one step further by analyzing the behavior of both genuine multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence under Lorentz boosts. Specifically, we conduct a case study for the problem of an electron-positron pair created in a superposed multipartite pure state. Our approach is different from the standard treatments also in that we consider all the c…
Exploiting near-term quantum computers and achieving practical value is a considerable and exciting challenge. Most prominent candidates as variational algorithms typically aim to find the ground state of a Hamiltonian by minimising a single classical (energy) surface which is sampled from by a quantum computer. Here we introduce a method we call CoVaR, an alternative means to exploit the power of variational circuits: We find eigenstates by finding joint roots of a polynomially growing number of properties of the quantum state as covariance functions between the Hamiltonian and an operator po…
Coherent feedback control of quantum systems has demonstrable advantages over measurement-based control, but so far there has been little work done on coherent estimators and more specifically coherent observers. Coherent observers are input the coherent output of a specified quantum plant, and are designed such that some subset of the observer and plant's expectation values converge in the asymptotic limit. We previously developed a class of mean tracking (MT) observers for open harmonic oscillators that only converged in mean position and momentum; Here we develop a class of covariance matri…
We introduce Bell inequalities based on covariance, one of the most common measures of correlation. Explicit examples are discussed, and violations in quantum theory are demonstrated. A crucial feature of these covariance Bell inequalities is their nonlinearity; this has nontrivial consequences for the derivation of their local bound, which is not reached by deterministic local correlations. For our simplest inequality, we derive analytically tight bounds for both local and quantum correlations. An interesting application of covariance Bell inequalities is that they can act as "shared randomne…
We give a tutorial exposition of the analogue of the filtering equation for quantum systems focusing on the quantum probabilistic framework and developing the ideas from the classical theory. Quantum covariances and conditional expectations on von Neumann algebras play an essential part in the presentation.
Compatibility conditions of quantum channels featuring symmetry through covariance are studied. Compatibility here means the possibility of obtaining two or more channels through partial trace out of a broadcasting channel. We see that covariance conditions can be used to simplify compatibility conditions as the broadcasting channel can be assumed to be covariant in a particular way. A particular emphasis is on Weyl covariance and in determining compatibility conditions for Weyl-covariant channels. The concrete examples studied include the case of a non-compact continuous phase space and the c…
We investigate the relationship between two properties of quantum transformations often studied in popular subtheories of quantum theory: covariance of the Wigner representation of the theory and the existence of a transformation noncontextual ontological model of the theory. We consider subtheories of quantum theory specified by a set of states, measurements and transformations, defined specifying a group of unitaries, that map between states (and measurements) within the subtheory. We show that if there exists a Wigner representation of the subtheory which is covariant under the group of uni…
We consider a problem of description of quantum correlations and dispersions of subsystems of complex open systems. Based on our previous results we proposed a method to evaluate pure quantum contributions from total statistical characteristics of two coupled oscillators interacting with thermal reservoirs. The natural way to extract pure quantum characteristic of the system under study is a calculation of difference between the total value and its pure classical part. A numerical study of temporal behavior of quantum variances and covariances from given initial states up to states in the infi…
In this paper, a quantum algorithm based on gaussian process regression model is proposed. The proposed quantum algorithm consists of three sub-algorithms. One is the first quantum subalgorithm to efficiently generate mean predictor. The improved HHL algorithm is proposed to obtain the sign of outcomes. Therefore, the terrible situation that results is ambiguous in terms of original HHL algorithm is avoided, which makes whole algorithm more clear and exact. The other is to product covariance predictor with same method. Thirdly, the squared exponential covariance matrices are prepared that anni…
Parties connected to independent sources through a network can generate correlations among themselves. Notably, the space of feasible correlations for a given network, depends on the physical nature of the sources and the measurements performed by the parties. In particular, quantum sources give access to nonlocal correlations that cannot be generated classically. In this paper, we derive a universal limit on correlations in networks in terms of their covariance matrix. We show that in a network satisfying a certain condition, the covariance matrix of any feasible correlation can be decomposed…
Quantum state smoothing is a technique for estimating the quantum state of a partially observed quantum system at time $τ$, conditioned on an entire observed measurement record (both before and after $τ$). However, this smoothing technique requires an observer (Alice, say) to know the nature of the measurement records that are unknown to her in order to characterize the possible true states for Bob's (say) systems. If Alice makes an incorrect assumption about the set of true states for Bob's system, she will obtain a smoothed state that is suboptimal, and, worse, may be unrealizable (not corre…
We study spectral parametric correlations in quantum chaotic systems and introduce the number covariance as a measure of such correlations. We derive analytic results for the classical random matrix ensembles using the binary correlation method and obtain compact expressions for the co- variance. We illustrate the universality of this measure by presenting the spectral analysis of the quantum kicked rotors for the time-reversal invariant and time-reversal non-invariant cases. A local version of the parametric number variance introduced earlier is also investigated.
We show that the predictions of spatially smeared particle detectors coupled to quantum fields are not generally covariant outside the pointlike limit. This lack of covariance manifests itself as an ambiguity in the time-ordering operation. We analyze how the breakdown of covariance affects typical detector models in quantum field theory such as the Unruh-DeWitt model. Specifically, we show how the violations of covariance depend on the state of the detectors-field system, the shape and state of motion of the detectors, and the spacetime geometry. Furthermore, we provide the tools to explicitl…
In physics, every observation is made with respect to a frame of reference. Although reference frames are usually not considered as degrees of freedom, in all practical situations it is a physical system which constitutes a reference frame. Can a quantum system be considered as a reference frame and, if so, which description would it give of the world? Here, we introduce a general method to quantise reference frame transformations, which generalises the usual reference frame transformation to a "superposition of coordinate transformations". We describe states, measurement, and dynamical evolut…
For a fixed average energy, the simultaneous estimation of multiple phases can provide a better total precision than estimating them individually. We show this for a multimode interferometer with a phase in each mode, using Gaussian inputs and passive elements, by calculating the covariance matrix. The quantum Cramér-Rao bound provides a lower bound to the covariance matrix via the quantum Fisher information matrix, whose elements we derive to be the covariances of the photon numbers across the modes. We prove that this bound can be saturated. In spite of the Gaussian nature of the problem, th…

Paul Busch has emphasized on various occasions the importance for physics of going beyond a merely instrumentalist view of quantum mechanics. Even if we cannot be sure that any particular realist interpretation describes the world as it actually is, the investigation of possible realist interpretations helps us to develop new physical ideas and better intuitions about the nature of physical objects at the micro level. In this spirit, Paul Busch himself pioneered the concept of ``unsharp quantum reality'', according to which there is an objective non-classical indeterminacy---a lack of sharpnes…

We derive fundamental constraints for the Schur complement of positive matrices, which provide an operator strengthening to recently established information inequalities for quantum covariance matrices, including strong subadditivity. This allows us to prove general results on the monogamy of entanglement and steering quantifiers in continuous variable systems with an arbitrary number of modes per party. A powerful hierarchical relation for correlation measures based on the log-determinant of covariance matrices is further established for all Gaussian states, which has no counterpart among qua…
