We present the formula for the number of monic irreducible polynomials of degree $n$ over the finite field $\mathbb F_q$ where the coefficients of $x^{n-1}$ and $x$ vanish for $n\ge3$. In particular, we give a relation between rational points of algebraic curves over finite fields and the number of elements $a\in\mathbb F_{q^n}$ for which Trace$(a)=0$ and Trace$(a^{-1})=0$. Besides, we apply the formula to give an upper bound on the number of distinct constructions of a family of sequences with good family complexity and cross-correlation measure.
Let $G$ be a group and $H$ be a subgroup of $G$. The classical branching rule (or symmetry breaking) asks: For an irreducible representation $π$ of $G$, determine the occurrence of an irreducible representation $σ$ of $H$ in the restriction of $π$ to $H$. The reciprocal branching problem of this classical branching problem is to ask: For an irreducible representation $σ$ of $H$, find an irreducible representation $π$ of $G$ such that $σ$ occurs in the restriction of $π$ to $H$. For automorphic representations of classical groups, the branching problem has been addressed by the well-known globa…
Numerous results on self-reciprocal polynomials over finite fields have been studied. In this paper we generalize some of these to a-self reciprocal polynomials defined in [4]. We consider some properties of the divisibility of a-reciprocal polynomials and characterize the parity of the number of irreducible factors for a-self reciprocal polynomials over finite fields of odd characteristic.
A formula for the number of monic irreducible self-reciprocal polynomials, of a given degree over a finite field, was given by Carlitz in 1967. In 2011 Ahmadi showed that Carlitz's formula extends, essentially without change, to a count of irreducible polynomials arising through an arbitrary quadratic transformation. In the present paper we provide an explanation for this extension, and a simpler proof of Ahmadi's result, by a reduction to the known special case of self-reciprocal polynomials and a minor variation. We also prove further results on polynomials arising through a quadratic transf…
Let $ρ$ be the $p$-adic Galois representation attached to a cuspidal, regular algebraic, polarizable automorphic representation of $GL_n$. Assuming only that $ρ$ satisfies an irreducibility condition, we prove the vanishing of the adjoint Bloch--Kato Selmer group attached to $ρ$. This generalizes previous work of the author and James Newton.
We generalize Carlitz' result on the number of self reciprocal monic irreducible polynomials over finite fields by showing that similar explicit formula hold for the number of irreducible polynomials obtained by a fixed quadratic transformation. Our main tools are a combinatorial argument and Hurwitz genus formula.
Irreducible trinomials of given degree n over $F_2$ do not always exist and in the cases that there is no irreducible trinomial of degree n it may be effective to use trinomials with an irreducible factor of degree n. In this paper we consider some conditions under which irreducible polynomials divide trinomials over $F_2$. A condition for divisibility of self-reciprocal trinomials by irreducible polynomials over $F_2$ is established. And we extend Welch's criterion for testing if an irreducible polynomial divides trinomials $x^m+x^s+1$ to the trinomials $x^{am}+x^{bs}+1$.
In this article, we consider polynomials of the form $f(x)=a_0+a_{n_1}x^{n_1}+a_{n_2}x^{n_2}+\dots+a_{n_r}x^{n_r}\in \mathbb{Z}[x],$ where $|a_0|\ge |a_{n_1}|+\dots+|a_{n_r}|,$ $|a_0|$ is a prime power and $|a_0|\nmid |a_{n_1}a_{n_r}|$. We will show that under the strict inequality these polynomials are irreducible for certain values of $n_1$. In the case of equality, apart from its cyclotomic factors, they have exactly one irreducible non-reciprocal factor.
A-polynomials were introduced by Meyn and play an important role in the iterative construction of high degree self-reciprocal irreducible polynomials over the field F_2, since they constitute the starting point of the iteration. The exact number of A-polynomials of each degree was given by Niederreiter. Kyuregyan extended the construction of Meyn to arbitrary even finite fields. We relate the A-polynomials in this more general setting to inert places in a certain extension of elliptic function fields and obtain an explicit counting formula for their number. In particular, we are able to show t…
We study the explicit factorization of $2^n r$-th cyclotomic polynomials over finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ where $q, r$ are odd with $(r, q) =1$. We show that all irreducible factors of $2^n r$-th cyclotomic polynomials can be obtained easily from irreducible factors of cyclotomic polynomials of small orders. In particular, we obtain the explicit factorization of $2^n 5$-th cyclotomic polynomials over finite fields and construct several classes of irreducible polynomials of degree $2^{n-2}$ with fewer than 5 terms. The reciprocals of these irreducible polynomials are irreducible polynomials of …
We obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of irreducible binary quartic forms with integer coefficients with vanishing $J$-invariant and whose Hessians are proportional to the squares of reducible or positive definite binary quadratic form. These results give a case where one is able to count integral orbits inside a relatively open real orbit of a variety closed under a group action of degree at least three.
We show that every irreducible representation in the discrete automorphic spectrum of GL(n) admits a non vanishing mixed (Whittaker-symplectic) period integral. The analog local problem is a study of models first considered by Klyachko over a finite field. Locally, we show that for a p-adic field F every irreducible, unitary representation of GL(n,F) has a Klyachko model.
A polynomial with rational coefficients is said to be pure with respect to a rational prime $p$ if its Newton polygon has one slope. In this article, we prove that the number of irreducible factors of the $n$-th iterate of a pure polynomial over the rational field $\mathbb Q$ is bounded independent of $n$. In other words, we show that pure polynomials are {\em eventually stable}. Consequently, several eventual stability results available in literature follow; including the eventual stability of the polynomial $x^d+c\in\mathbb{Q}[x]$, where $c\ne 0,1$, is not a reciprocal of an integer. In addi…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ of conductor $N$. We obtain an explicit formula, as a product of local terms, for the ramification index at each cusp of a modular parametrization of $E$ by $X_0(N)$. Our formula shows that the ramification index always divides 24, a fact that had been previously conjectured by Brunault as a result of numerical computations. In fact, we prove a more general result which gives the order of vanishing at each cusp of a holomorphic newform of arbitary level, weight and character, provided its field of rationality satisfies a certain condition. The abo…
