In triangular lattice structures, spatial anisotropy and frustration can lead to rich equilibrium phase diagrams with regions containing complex, highly entangled states of matter. In this work we study the driven two-rung triangular Hubbard model and evolve these states out of equilibrium, observing how the interplay between the driving and the initial state unexpectedly shuts down the particle-hole excitation pathway. This restriction, which symmetry arguments fail to predict, dictates the transient dynamics of the system, causing the available particle-hole degrees of freedom to manifest uniform long-range order. We discuss implications of our results for a recent experiment on photo-induced superconductivity in ${\rm κ- (BEDT-TTF)_{2}Cu[N(CN)_{2}]Br}$ molecules.
We study the superconductivity of strongly coupled electron-phonon systems where the geometry of the lattice frustrates the charge order by the sign-problem-free Quantum Monte Carlo(QMC) method. The results suggest that with charge order frustrated, the superconductivity can benefit from strong electron-phonon interaction in a wide range of coupling strengths.
The theory that the change of the electronic kinetic energy in a direction perpendicular to the CuO-planes in high-temperature superconductors is a substantial fraction of the condensation energy is examined. It is argued that the consequences of this theory based on a rigorous $c$-axis conductivity sum rule are consistent with recent optical and penetration depth measurements.
Motivated by the various physical properties observed in $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X, we study the ground state of extended Hubbard model on two-dimensional anisotropic triangular lattice at 1/4-filling with variational Monte Carlo method. It is shown that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction enhances the charge fluctuation and it induces the anomalous state such as charge-ordered metallic state and the triplet next-nearest-neighbor $f$-wave superconductivity. We discuss the relation to the real materials and propose the unified view of the family of $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X.
Superconductivity in heavy-fermion materials can sometimes appear in the incoherent regime and in proximity to an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. Here we study these phenomena using large scale determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the dynamical cluster approximation with various impurity solvers for the periodic Anderson model with frustrated hybridization. We obtain solid evidence for a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting phase arising from an incoherent normal state in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. There is a coexistence region and the width of t…
We report the charge doping of KCr$_3$As$_3$ via H intercalation. We show that the previously reported ethanol bath deintercalation of K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ to KCr$_3$As$_3$ has a secondary effect whereby H from the bath enters the quasi-one-dimensional Cr$_6$As$_6$ chains. Furthermore, we find that - contrary to previous interpretations - the difference between non-superconducting as-grown KCr$_3$As$_3$ samples and superconducting hydrothermally annealed samples is not a change in crystallinity but due to charge doping, with the latter treatment increasing the H concentration in the CrAs tubes ef…
Motivated by recent experiments on magnetically frustrated heavy fermion metals, we theoretically study the phase diagram of the Kondo lattice model with a nonmagnetic valence bond solid ground state on a ladder. A similar physical setting may be naturally occurring in YbAl$_3$C$_3$, CeAgBi$_2$, and TmB$_4$ compounds. In the insulating limit, the application of a magnetic field drives a quantum phase transition to an easy-plane antiferromagnet, which is described by a Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. Using a combination of field theoretical techniques and density matrix renormalization g…
We make the first report that a metallic pyrochlore oxide \Cd2Re2O7, exhibits type II superconductivity at 1.1 K. The pyrochlore oxide is known to be a geometrical frustrated system, which includes the tetrahedral network of magnetic ions. A large number of compounds are classified in the family of pyrochlore oxides, and these compounds exhibit a wide variety of physical properties ranging from insulator through semiconductor and from bad metal to good metal. Until now, however, no superconductivity has been reported for frustrated pyrochlore oxides. The bulk superconductivity of this compound…
The discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in helimagnets (CrAs, MnP) has attracted considerable interest in understanding the relationship between complex magnetism and unconventional superconductivity. However, the nature of the magnetism and magnetic interactions that drive the unusual double-helical magnetic order in these materials remains unclear. Here, we report neutron scattering measurements of magnetic excitations in CrAs single crystals at ambient pressure. Our experiments reveal well defined spin wave excitations up to about 150 meV with a pseudogap below 7 meV, which can …
Adding interactions to many-body Hamiltonians of geometrically frustrated lattices often leads to diminished subspaces of localized states. In this paper, we show how to construct interacting many-body Hamiltonians, starting from the non-interacting tight-binding Hamiltonians, that preserve or even expand these subspaces. The methods presented involve modifications in the one-body network representation of the many-body Hamiltonians which generate new interacting terms in these Hamiltonians. The subspace of many-particle localized states can be preserved in the interacting Hamiltonian, by proj…
Neutron diffraction on the double perovskite Sr2YRuO6 with a quasi-face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice of Ru moments reveals planar magnetic correlations that condense into a partial long-range ordered state with coupled alternate antiferromagnetic (AFM) YRuO4 square layers coexisting with short-range correlations below T{N1}=32 K. A second transition to a fully ordered AFM state below T{N2}=24 K is observed. These observations are ascribed to the cancellation of the magnetic coupling between consecutive AFM square layers in FCC antiferromagnets, notably the simplest three-dimensional frustrated…
In superconducting films, the role of intrinsic disorder is typically to compete with superconductivity by fragmenting the global phase coherence and lowering the superfluid density. Nonetheless, when a transverse magnetic field is applied to the system and an Abrikosov vortex lattice forms, the presence of disorder can actually strengthen the superconducting state against thermal fluctuations. By means of Monte Carlo simulations on the uniformly frustrated XY model in two dimensions, we show that while for weak pinning the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ increases with the applied …
We demonstrate many-body localization (MBL) transition in a one-dimensional isotropic XY chain with a weak next-nearest-neighbor frustration in a random magnetic field. We perform finite-size exact diagonalization calculations of level-spacing statistics and fractal dimensions to characterize the MBL transition with increasing the random field amplitude. An equivalent representation of the model in terms of spinless fermions explains the presence of the delocalized phase by the appearance of an effective non-local interaction between the fermions. This interaction appears due to frustration pr…
An $SU({\rm n})$-symmetric generalization of the Heisenberg model for quantum spin $S$ operators is used to investigate the geometrically frustrated body-centered tetragonal (BCT) lattice with antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling $J_1$ and intralayer first and second neighbor coupling $J_2$ and $J_3$. Using complementary representations of the spin operators, we study the phase diagram characterizing the ground state of the system. For small n, we find that the most stable solutions correspond to four different families of possible long range magnetic orders that are governed by $J_1$, $J_2$,…

The interplay between electronic orders and superconductivity is central to the physics of unconventional superconductors, and is particularly pronounced in the iron-based superconductors. Motivated by recent experiments on FeSe, we study the superconducting pairing in its nematic phase in a multiorbital model with frustrated spin-exchange interactions. The electron correlations in the presence of the nematic order give rise to an enhanced orbital selectivity in the superconducting pairing amplitudes. This orbital-selective pairing produces a large gap anisotropy on the Fermi surface. Our resu…
At zero temperature the sublattice magnetization of the quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a body-centered cubic lattice with competing first and second neighbor exchange (J1 and J2) is investigated using the non-linear spin wave theory. The zero temperature phases of the model consist of a two sublattice Néel phase for small J_2 (AF_1) and a collinear phase at large J_2 (AF_2). We show that quartic corrections due to spin-wave interactions enhance the sublattice magnetization in both the AF_1 and the AF_2 phase. The magnetization corrections are prominent near the classical transi…
We study the ground state (GS) many-body quantum entanglement of two different transverse field models on a quasi-2D square lattice relevant to a Hydrogen-bonded crystal, i.e, squaric acid. We measure the genuine multipartite qubit-entanglement ($C_{\text{GME}}(ψ)$) of the ground state of very generic models with all the possible cases of exchange couplings considered under defect free and one lattice site defect conditions. Our results show that creation, decay of multipartite entanglement occur for different combinations of coupling strength. When frustration is maximum the system exhibits a…
We present many-body calculations of superconducting pair-pair correlations in the ground state of the half-filled band Hubbard model on large anisotropic triangular lattices. Our calculations cover nearly the complete range of anisotropies between the square and isotropic triangular lattice limits. We find that the superconducting pair-pair correlations decrease monotonically with increasing onsite Hubbard interaction U for inter-pair distances greater than nearest neighbor. For the large lattices of interest here the distance dependence of the correlations approaches that for noninteracting …
The quantum Heisenberg model is studied in the geometrically frustrated body-centered tetragonal lattice(BCT lattice) with antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling J1 and intralayer first and second neighbor coupling J2 and J3. We introduce a variational method: each interaction term can be decoupled partially in the purely magnetic Weiss and in the spin-liquid (SL) mean-field channels. We find that the most stable variational solutions correspond to the three different possible long range magnetic orders that are respectively governed by J1, J2, and J3. We characterize three different purely SL …
Quantum antiferromagnets on geometrically frustrated lattices often allow a number of unusual paramagnetic ground states. The fate of these Mott insulators upon doping is an important issue that may shed some light on the high $T_c$ cuprate problem. We consider the doped Mott insulator on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice via the t-J model. The U(1) slave-boson mean field theory reveals the strong competition between different broken symmetry states. It is found that, in some ranges of doping, there exist superconducting phases with or without coexisting translational-symmetry- breaking orders su…
Kagome-net, appearing in areas of fundamental physics, materials, photonic and cold-atom systems, hosts frustrated fermionic and bosonic excitations. However, it is extremely rare to find a system to study both fermionic and bosonic modes to gain insights into their many-body interplay. Here we use state-of-the-art scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to discover unusual electronic coupling to flat-band phonons in a layered kagome paramagnet. Our results reveal the kagome structure with unprecedented atomic resolution and observe the striking bosonic mode interacting with dispersive …
A large N expansion technique, based on symplectic (Sp(N)) symmetry, for frustrated magnetic systems is studied. The phase diagram of a square lattice, spin S, quantum antiferromagnet with first, second and third neighbor antiferromagnetic coupling (the J_1-J_2-J_3 model) is determined in the large-N limit and consequences of fluctuations at finite N for the quantum disordered phases are discussed. In addition to phases with long range magnetic order, two classes of disordered phases are found: (i) states similar to those in unfrustrated systems with commensurate, collinear spin correlations, …
We show that in Pr$ _{0.5} $La$ _{0.2} $Ca$ _{0.3} $MnO$ _{3} $/YBa$ _{2} $Cu$ _{3} $O$ _{7} $ (PLCMO/YBCO) multilayers the low temperature state of YBCO is very resistive and resembles the one of a granular superconductor or a frustrated Josephson-junction network. Notably, a coherent superconducting response can be restored with a large magnetic field which also suppresses the charge-orbital order in PLCMO. This coincidence suggests that the granular superconducting state of YBCO is induced by the charge-orbital order of PLCMO. The coupling mechanism and the nature of the induced inhomogeneo…
The use of artificial neural networks to represent quantum wave-functions has recently attracted interest as a way to solve complex many-body problems. The potential of these variational parameterizations has been supported by analytical and numerical evidence in controlled benchmarks. While approaching the end of the early research phase in this field, it becomes increasingly important to show how neural-network states perform for models and physical problems that constitute a clear open challenge for other many-body computational methods. In this paper we start addressing this aspect, concen…
In a flat band superconductor, bosonic excitations can disperse while unpaired electrons are immobile. To study this strongly interacting system, we construct a family of multi-band Hubbard models with exact eta-pairing ground states in all space groups. We analytically compute their many-body excitations and find that the Cooper pair bound states and density excitations obey an effective single-particle Hamiltonian written in terms of the non-interacting wavefunctions. These bound states possess a unique zero-energy excitation whose quadratic dispersion is determined by the minimal quantum me…
The natural mineral azurite Cu$_3$(CO$_3$)$_2$(OH)$_2$ is a frustrated magnet displaying unusual and controversially discussed magnetic behavior. Motivated by the lack of a unified description for this system, we perform a theoretical study based on density functional theory as well as state-of-the-art numerical many-body calculations. We propose an effective generalized spin-1/2 diamond chain model which provides a consistent description of experiments: low-temperature magnetization, inelastic neutron scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, magnetic susceptibility as well as new …
We study how a $d$-wave superconductivity is changed when illuminated by circularly-polarised light (CPL) in the repulsive Hubbard model in the strong-coupling regime. We adopt the Floquet formalism for the Gutzwiller-projected effective Hamiltonian with the time-periodic Schrieffer-Wolff transformation. We find that CPL induces a topological superconductivity with a $d+id$ pairing, which arises from the chiral spin coupling and the three-site term generated by the CPL. The latter term remains significant even for low frequencies and low intensities of the CPL. This is clearly reflected in the…
We investigate the physics of frustrated 3-leg Hubbard ladders in the band limit, when hopping across the ladder's rungs (t$_{\perp}$) is of the same order as hopping along them (t) much greater than the onsite Coulomb repulsion (U). We show that this model exhibits a striking electron-hole asymmetry close to half-filling: the hole-doped system at low temperatures develops a Resonating Valence Bond (RVB)-like d-wave gap (pseudogap close to ($π$,0)) coinciding with gapless nodal excitations (nodal liquid); in contrast, the electron-doped system is seen to develop a Mott gap at the nodes, whilst…

The Schwinger-boson theory of the frustrated square lattice antiferromagnet yields a stable, gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid ground state with time-reversal symmetry, incommensurate spin correlations and long-range Ising-nematic order. We obtain an equivalent description of this state using fermionic spinons (the fermionic spinons can be considered to be bound states of the bosonic spinons and the visons). Upon doping, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid can lead to a fractionalized Fermi liquid (FL*) with small Fermi pockets of electron-like quasiparticles, while preserving the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ to…
Spin-triplet superconductivity is actively pursued in condensed matter physics due to the potential applications in topological quantum computations. The related pairing mechanism involving the interaction remains an important research topic. Here we propose a universal approach to obtain p-wave triplet superconductivity in the Hubbard models by simply changing the sign of the hopping amplitudes of the spin-down electrons, and apply it to three prototype two-dimensional lattices (honeycomb, square, and triangular). The parent Hamiltonian at half filling has long-range magnetic order, which is …
We study the Kondo lattice model on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice focusing on the quantum phase transition between the valence bond solid and the heavy fermion liquid phase. By explicitly including spinon pairing of local moments at the mean-field level, we establish the emergence of a unique heavy fermion superconducting phase induced by dimer ordering of the local moments coexisting with Kondo hybridization. Furthermore, we demonstrate that for suitable choices of parameters, a partial Kondo-screening phase, where some of the valence bonds are broken, precedes the a…
To understand complex physics of a system with strong electron electron interactions, it is ideal to control and monitor its properties while tuning an external electric field applied to the system. Indeed, complete electric field control of many body states in strongly correlated electron systems is fundamental to the next generation of condensed matter research and devices. However, the material must be thin enough to avoid shielding of the electric field in bulk material. Two-dimensional materials do not experience electrical screening, and their charge carrier density can be controlled by …
What distinguishes trivial from topological superluids in interacting many-body systems where the number of particles is conserved? Building on a class of integrable pairing Hamiltonians, we present a number-conserving, interacting variation of the Kitaev model, the Richardson-Gaudin-Kitaev chain, that remains exactly solvable for periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions. Our model allows us to identify fermionic parity switches that distinctively characterize topological superconductivity in interacting many-body systems. Although the Majorana zero-modes in this model have only a power-l…
The study of strongly frustrated magnetic systems has drawn great attentions from both theoretical and experimental physics. Efficient simulations of these models are essential for understanding their exotic properties. Here we present PEPS++, a novel computational paradigm for simulating frustrated magnetic systems and other strongly correlated quantum many-body systems. PEPS++ can accurately solve these models at the extreme scale with low cost and high scalability on modern heterogeneous supercomputers. We implement PEPS++ on Sunway TaihuLight based on a carefully designed tensor computatio…
We thoroughly examine the ground state of the triangular lattice of Pb on Si(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy. We detect charge-order, accompanied by a subtle structural reconstruction. Applying the extended variational cluster approach we map out the phase diagram as a function of local and non-local Coulomb interactions. Comparing the experimental data with the theoretical modeling leads us to conclude that electron correlations are the driving force of the charge-ordered state in Pb/Si(111), rather than Fermi surface nesting. These results resolve the discussion about the origin of …
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we study the critical behavior of two models of frustrated XY antiferromagnets with a collinear spin ordering and with an additional twofold degeneracy of the ground state. We consider a classic antiferromagnet on a body-centered cubic lattice with an additional antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between next-nearest spins, and a ferromagnet with an extra antiferromagnetic intralayer exchange. In both models, a single first-order transition on the discrete and continuous order parameters is found. Observed critical pseudo-exponents are in agreement with expon…
We implement an algorithm which is aimed to reduce the number of basis states spanning the Hilbert space of quantum many-body systems. We test the efficiency of the procedure by working out and analyzing the spectral properties of strongly correlated and frustrated quantum spin systems. The role and importance of symmetries are investigated
We propose a new ansatz for the ground-state wave function of quantum many-body systems on a lattice. The key idea is to cover the lattice with plaquettes and obtain a state whose configurational weights can be optimized by means of a Variational Monte Carlo algorithm. Such a scheme applies to any dimension, without any "sign" instability. We show results for various two dimensional spin models (including frustrated ones). A detailed comparison with available exact results, as well as with variational methods based on different ansatzs is offered. In particular, our numerical estimates are in …
It is argued that a new mechanism and many-body theory of superconductivity are required for doped correlated insulators. Here we review the essential features of and the experimental support for such a theory, in which the physics is driven by the kinetic energy.
We report a density-matrix renormalization group study of the $t$-$J$ model with nearest ($t_1$ & $J_1$) and next-nearest ($t_2$ & $J_2$) interactions on a 4-leg cylinder with concentration $δ=1/8$ of doped holes. We observe an astonishingly complex interplay between uniform $d$-wave superconductivity (SC) and strong spin and charge density wave ordering tendencies (SDW and CDW). Depending on parameters, the CDWs can be commensurate with period 4 or 8. By comparing the charge ordering vectors with $2 k_F$, we rule out Fermi surface nesting-induced density wave order in our model. Magnetic frus…
Artificially engineered light-matter systems constitute a novel, versatile architecture for the quantum simulation of driven, dissipative phase transitions and non-equilibrium quantum many-body systems. Here, we review recent experimental as well as theoretical works on the simulation of geometrical frustration in interacting photonic systems out of equilibrium. In particular, we discuss two recent discoveries at the interface of quantum optics and condensed matter physics: (i) the experimental achievement of bosonic condensation into a flat energy band and (ii) the theoretical prediction of c…
A combination of density functional theory calculations, many-body model considerations, magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements shows that the multiferroic FeTe$_2$O$_5$Br should be described as a system of alternating antiferromagnetic $S=5/2$ chains with strong Fe-O-Te-O-Fe bridges weakly coupled by two-dimensional frustrated interactions, rather than the previously reported tetramer models. The peculiar temperature dependence of the incommensurate magnetic vector can be explained in terms of interchain exchange striction being responsible for the emergent net electric polari…
Highly frustrated lattices yield a completely flat lowest single-electron band. Remarkably, exact many-body ground states can be constructed for the repulsive Hubbard model and the t-J model by filling this flat band with localized electron states. This construction leads to a macroscopic ground-state degeneracy. We discuss how to compute these ground-state degeneracies for a certain class of models, including in particular the sawtooth chain. Furthermore, we discuss generic consequences for low-temperature thermodynamic properties, like the appearance of a low-temperature peak in the specific…
We summarize the recent developments in the model design and computation for a few representative quantum many-body systems, encompassing quantum critical metals beyond the Hertz-Millis-Moriya framework with pseudogap and superconductivity, SYK non-Fermi-liquid with self-tuned quantum criticality and fluctuation induced superconductivity, and the flat-band quantum Moiré lattice models in continuum where the interplay of quantum geometry of flat-band wave function and the long-range Coulomb interactions gives rise to novel insulating phases at integer fillings and superconductivity away from th…
Quantum Monte Carlo Simulation of Bipolaron Superconductivity in Extended Hubbard--Holstein models on Face-Centered-Cubic and Body-Centered-Cubic Lattices
We use the spin-rotation-invariant Green's function method as well as the high-temperature expansion to discuss the thermodynamic properties of the frustrated spin-$S$ $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Heisenberg magnet on the body-centered cubic lattice. We consider ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor bonds $J_1 < 0$ and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor bonds $J_2 \ge 0$ and arbitrary spin $S$. We find that the transition point $J_2^c$ between the ferromagnetic ground state and the antiferromagnetic one is nearly independent of the spin $S$, i.e., it is very close to the classical transition point $J_2^{c,{\…
