A large amount of research on Convolutional Neural Networks has focused on flat Classification in the multi-class domain. In the real world, many problems are naturally expressed as problems of hierarchical classification, in which the classes to be predicted are organized in a hierarchy of classes. In this paper, we propose a new architecture for hierarchical classification of images, introducing a stack of deep linear layers with cross-entropy loss functions and center loss combined. The proposed architecture can extend any neural network model and simultaneously optimizes loss functions to discover local hierarchical class relationships and a loss function to discover global information from the whole class hierarchy while penalizing class hierarchy violations. We experimentally show that our hierarchical classifier presents advantages to the traditional classification approaches finding application in computer vision tasks.

We review three recently-proposed classifier quality metrics and consider their suitability for large-scale classification challenges such as applying convolutional neural networks to the 1000-class ImageNet dataset. These metrics, referred to as the "geometric accuracy," "decisiveness," and "robustness," are based on the generalized mean ($ρ$ equals 0, 1, and -2/3, respectively) of the classifier's self-reported and measured probabilities of correct classification. We also propose some minor clarifications to standardize the metric definitions. With these updates, we show some examples of cal…

Convolutional Mean: A Simple Convolutional Neural Network for Illuminant Estimation
In this paper, a convolutional neural network (CNN) was used to classify NMR images of human brains with 4 different types of tumors: meningioma, glioma and pituitary gland tumors. During the training phase of this project, an accuracy of 100% was obtained, meanwhile, in the evaluation phase the precision was 96%.

We apply convolutional neural networks to identify between malaria infected and non-infected segmented cells from the thin blood smear slide images. We optimize our model to find over 95% accuracy in malaria cell detection. We also apply Canny image processing to reduce training file size while maintaining comparable accuracy (~ 94%).

The field of neural networks has seen significant advances in recent years with the development of deep and convolutional neural networks. Although many of the current works address real-valued models, recent studies reveal that neural networks with hypercomplex-valued parameters can better capture, generalize, and represent the complexity of multidimensional data. This paper explores the quaternion-valued convolutional neural network application for a pattern recognition task from medicine, namely, the diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Precisely, we compare the performance of real-va…
The Neural Tangent Kernel (NTK) is an important milestone in the ongoing effort to build a theory for deep learning. Its prediction that sufficiently wide neural networks behave as kernel methods, or equivalently as random feature models, has been confirmed empirically for certain wide architectures. It remains an open question how well NTK theory models standard neural network architectures of widths common in practice, trained on complex datasets such as ImageNet. We study this question empirically for two well-known convolutional neural network architectures, namely AlexNet and LeNet, and f…
Trained on the works of an artist under study and visually comparable works of other artists, convolutional neural networks can identify forgeries and provide attributions. They can also assign classification probabilities within a painting, revealing mixed authorship and identifying regions painted by different hands.
Image classification is considered, and a hierarchical max-pooling model with additional local pooling is introduced. Here the additional local pooling enables the hierachical model to combine parts of the image which have a variable relative distance towards each other. Various convolutional neural network image classifiers are introduced and compared in view of their rate of convergence. The finite sample size performance of the estimates is analyzed by applying them to simulated and real data.
With technological advancements and the exponential growth of data, we have been unfolding different capabilities of neural networks in different sectors. In this paper, I have tried to use a specific type of Neural Network known as Convolutional Neural Network(CNN/ConvNet) in the stock market. In other words, I have tried to construct and train a convolutional neural network on past stock prices data and then tried to predict the movement of stock price i.e. whether the stock price would rise or fall, in the coming time.
Activation functions play a vital role in the training of Convolutional Neural Networks. For this reason, to develop efficient and performing functions is a crucial problem in the deep learning community. Key to these approaches is to permit a reliable parameter learning, avoiding vanishing gradient problems. The goal of this work is to propose an ensemble of Convolutional Neural Networks trained using several different activation functions. Moreover, a novel activation function is here proposed for the first time. Our aim is to improve the performance of Convolutional Neural Networks in small…
In this technical report, we investigate extending convolutional neural networks to the setting where functions are not sampled in a grid pattern. We show that by treating the samples as the average of a function within a cell, we can find a natural equivalent of most layers used in CNN. We also present an algorithm for running inference for these models exactly using standard convex geometry algorithms.
Convolutional neural networks have become a popular research in the field of finger vein recognition because of their powerful image feature representation. However, most researchers focus on improving the performance of the network by increasing the CNN depth and width, which often requires high computational effort. Moreover, we can notice that not only the importance of pixels in different channels is different, but also the importance of pixels in different positions of the same channel is different. To reduce the computational effort and to take into account the different importance of pi…
