Convolutional Neural Networks demonstrate high performance on ImageNet Large-Scale Visual Recognition Challenges contest. Nevertheless, the published results only show the overall performance for all image classes. There is no further analysis why certain images get worse results and how they could be improved. In this paper, we provide deep performance analysis based on different types of images and point out the weaknesses of convolutional neural networks through experiment. We design a novel multiple paths convolutional neural network, which feeds different versions of images into separated paths to learn more comprehensive features. This model has better presentation for image than the traditional single path model. We acquire better classification results on complex validation set on both top 1 and top 5 scores than the best ILSVRC 2013 classification model.

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) achieve remarkable performance on image classification tasks. Recent studies, however, have demonstrated that generalization abilities are more important than the depth of neural networks for improving performance on image classification tasks. Herein, a new neural network called SwGridNet is proposed. A SwGridNet includes many convolutional processing units which connect mutually as a grid network where many processing paths exist between input and output. A SwGridNet has high generalization capability because the multipath architecture has the same e…

A number of recent studies have shown that a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) pretrained on a large dataset can be adopted as a universal image description which leads to astounding performance in many visual classification tasks. Most of these studies, if not all, adopt activations of the fully-connected layer of a DCNN as the image or region representation and it is believed that convolutional layer activations are less discriminative. This paper, however, advocates that if used appropriately convolutional layer activations can be turned into a powerful image representation which enj…

This paper addresses the visualisation of image classification models, learnt using deep Convolutional Networks (ConvNets). We consider two visualisation techniques, based on computing the gradient of the class score with respect to the input image. The first one generates an image, which maximises the class score [Erhan et al., 2009], thus visualising the notion of the class, captured by a ConvNet. The second technique computes a class saliency map, specific to a given image and class. We show that such maps can be employed for weakly supervised object segmentation using classification ConvNe…

Deep learning based methods have seen a massive rise in popularity for hyperspectral image classification over the past few years. However, the success of deep learning is attributed greatly to numerous labeled samples. It is still very challenging to use only a few labeled samples to train deep learning models to reach a high classification accuracy. An active deep-learning framework trained by an end-to-end manner is, therefore, proposed by this paper in order to minimize the hyperspectral image classification costs. First, a deep densely connected convolutional network is considered for hyp…

Using our ensemble we improve on the previous best result on the test set by about 1 %, achieving a 60.03 % classification accuracy without any use of visual temporal informat…
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are state-of-the-art models for document image classification tasks. However, many of these approaches rely on parameters and architectures designed for classifying natural images, which differ from document images. We question whether this is appropriate and conduct a large empirical study to find what aspects of CNNs most affect performance on document images. Among other results, we exceed the state-of-the-art on the RVL-CDIP dataset by using shear transform data augmentation and an architecture designed for a larger input image. Additionally, we analyze…

Convolutional neural networks (CNN) are widely used in computer vision, especially in image classification. However, the way in which information and invariance properties are encoded through in deep CNN architectures is still an open question. In this paper, we propose to modify the standard convo- lutional block of CNN in order to transfer more information layer after layer while keeping some invariance within the net- work. Our main idea is to exploit both positive and negative high scores obtained in the convolution maps. This behav- ior is obtained by modifying the traditional activation …

In recent years, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown impressive ability to represent hyperspectral images (HSIs) and achieved encouraging results in HSI classification. However, the existing CNN-based models operate at the patch-level, in which pixel is separately classified into classes using a patch of images around it. This patch-level classification will lead to a large number of repeated calculations, and it is difficult to determine the appropriate patch size that is beneficial to classification accuracy. In addition, the conventional CNN models operate convolutions with…

This paper presents a new supervised classification algorithm for remotely sensed hyperspectral image (HSI) which integrates spectral and spatial information in a unified Bayesian framework. First, we formulate the HSI classification problem from a Bayesian perspective. Then, we adopt a convolutional neural network (CNN) to learn the posterior class distributions using a patch-wise training strategy to better use the spatial information. Next, spatial information is further considered by placing a spatial smoothness prior on the labels. Finally, we iteratively update the CNN parameters using s…
Classification of very high resolution (VHR) satellite images has three major challenges: 1) inherent low intra-class and high inter-class spectral similarities, 2) mismatching resolution of available bands, and 3) the need to regularize noisy classification maps. Conventional methods have addressed these challenges by adopting separate stages of image fusion, feature extraction, and post-classification map regularization. These processing stages, however, are not jointly optimizing the classification task at hand. In this study, we propose a single-stage framework embedding the processing sta…

The fine-grained image classification problem is characterised by large intra-class variations and small inter-class variations. To overcome these problems our proposed MixDCNN system partitions images into K subsets of similar images and learns an expert DCNN for each subset. The output from each of the K DCNNs is combined to form a single classification decision. In contrast to previous techniques, we provide a formulation to perform joint end-to-end …
In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network with mapping layers (MCNN) for hyperspectral image (HSI) classification. The proposed mapping layers map the input patch into a low dimensional subspace by multilinear algebra. We use our mapping layers to reduce the spectral and spatial redundancy and maintain most energy of the input. The feature extracted by our mapping layers can also reduce the number of following convolutional layers for feature extraction. Our MCNN architecture avoids the declining accuracy with increasing layers phenomenon of deep learning models for HSI classifi…
In this work, we exploit convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for the classification of very high resolution (VHR) polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data. For deep networks, we use the SegNet model for semantic segmentation, which corresponds to pixelwise classification in remote sensing. We propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture for image classification based on subband decomposition of the image using wavelets. The proposed architecture decomposes the input image spectra into multiple critically sampled subbands, extracts features using a single CNN per subband, and finally, performs classification by combining the extracted features using a fully connected layer. Processing each of the subbands by an individual CNN, thereby limiting the learning scope of each CNN to a single subband, imposes a form of structural regularization. This provides better general…

Priority pooling layers pool features with low magnitudes while leaving the rest unchanged. We evaluated the proposed model using letter…
