We characterized spatially resolved spectral phase interferometry with an isolated attosecond pulse (IAP). The measured spatial-spectral interferogram and spectral interference fringe visibility show a high degree of IAPs spatial and spectral coherences. In addition, the characterized spectral-delay interferogram shows periodic temporal oscillations over the full IAP continuous spectrum, which indicates high temporal coherence. The IAP coherence over broad continuous spectral region holds potential for realizing the time-resolved IAP phase-based spectroscopy, which will contribute to exploring spatiotemporal dispersive electronic wave dynamics in the future.
Isotopic substitution in molecular systems can affect fundamental molecular properties including the energy position and spacing of electronic, vibrational and rotational levels, thus modifying the dynamics associated to their coherent superposition. In extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy, the photoelectron leaving the molecule after the absorption of a single photon can trigger an ultrafast nuclear motion in the cation, which can lead, eventually, to molecular fragmentation. This dynamics depends on the mass of the constituents of the cation, thus showing, in general, a significant isotopic depe…
The generation of the shortest isolated attosecond pulses requires both broad spectral bandwidth and control of the spectral phase. Rapid progress has been made in both aspects, leading to the generation of the world-record-shortest 67 as light pulses in 2012, and broadband attosecond continua covering a wide range of extreme ultraviolet and soft x-ray wavelengths. Such pulses have been successfully applied in photoelectron/photoion spectroscopy and the recently developed attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy to study electron dynamics in matter. In this Review, we discuss the significa…
Interferometry, as the key technique in modern precision measurements, has been used for length diagnosis in the fields of engineering metrology and astronomy. Analogous interferometric technique for time domain precision measurement is a significant complement to the spatial domain applications and requires the manipulation of the interference on the extreme time and energy scale. Here we present an all-optical interferometry for high precision measurement with attosecond temporal and hundreds of meV energy resolution. The interferometer is based on laser driven high order harmonics which pro…
A new method for efficiently generating an isolated single-cycle attosecond pulse is proposed. It is shown that the ultraviolet (UV) attosecond pulse can be utilized as a robust tool to control the dynamics of electron wave packets (EWPs). By adding a UV attosecond pulse to an infrared (IR) few-cycle pulse at a proper time, only one return of the EWP to the parent ion is selected to effectively contribute to the harmonics, then an isolated two-cycle 130-as pulse with a bandwidth of 45 eV is obtained. After complementing the chirp, an isolated single-cycle attosecond pulse with a duration less …
We report theoretical calculations of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) of Xe with the inclusion of multi-electron effects and macroscopic propagation of the fundamental and harmonic fields in an ionizing medium. By using the time-frequency analysis we show that the reshaping of the fundamental laser field is responsible for the continuum structure in the HHG spectra. We further suggest a method for obtaining an isolated attosecond pulse (IAP) by using a filter centered on axis to select the harmonics in the far field with different divergence. We also discuss the carrier-envelope-phase dep…
The generation of coherent light pulses in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectral region with attosecond pulse durations constitutes the foundation of the field of attosecond science. Twenty years after the first demonstration of isolated attosecond pulses, they continue to be a unique tool enabling the observation and control of electron dynamics in atoms, molecules and solids. It has long been identified that an increase in the repetition rate of attosecond light sources is necessary for many applications in atomic and molecular physics, surface science, and imaging. Although high harmonic g…
An electrical pulse E(t) is completely defined by its time-dependent amplitude and polarisation direction. For optical pulses the manipulation and characterisation of the light polarisation state is fundamental due to its relevance in several scientific and technological fields. In this work we demonstrate the complete temporal reconstruction of the electric field of few-cycle pulses with a complex time-dependent polarisation. Our experimental approach is based on extreme ultraviolet interferometry with isolated attosecond pulses and on the demonstration that the motion of an attosecond electr…
High harmonic generation driven by femtosecond lasers makes it possible to capture the fastest dynamics in molecules and materials. However, to date the shortest attosecond (as) pulses have been produced only in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) region of the spectrum below 100 eV, which limits the range of materials and molecular systems that can be explored. Here we use advanced experiment and theory to demonstrate a remarkable convergence of physics: when mid-infrared lasers are used to drive the high harmonic generation process, the conditions for optimal bright soft X-ray generation naturally…
When two indistinguishable photons are each incident on separate input ports of a beamsplitter they `bunch' deterministically, exiting via the same port as a direct consequence of their bosonic nature. This two-photon interference effect has long-held the potential for application in precision measurement of time delays, such as those induced by transparent specimens with unknown thickness profiles. However, the technique has never achieved resolutions significantly better than the few femtosecond (micron)-scale other than in a common-path geometry that severely limits applications. Here we de…
We demonstrate an all-optical approach for precise characterization of attosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses. Isolated attosecond pulse is produced from high order harmonics using intense driving pulse with proper gating technique. When a weak field is synchronized with the driver, it perturbs the harmonics generation process via altering the accumulated phase of the electron trajectories. The perturbed harmonic spectrum can be formulated as a convolution of the unperturbed dipole and a phase gate, implying the validity of complete reconstruction of isolated attosecond pulses using conventiona…
On the basis of real-time ab initio calculations, we study the non-perturbative interaction of two-color laser pulses with MgO crystal in the strong field regime to generate isolated attosecond pulse from high-harmonic emissions from MgO crystal. In this regard, we examine the impact of incident pulse characteristics such as its shape, intensity, and ellipticity as well as the consequence of the crystal anisotropy on the emitted harmonics and their corresponding isolated attosecond pulses. Our calculations predict the creation of isolated attosecond pulses with a duration of ~ 300 attoseconds;…
The generation of isolated attosecond pulses with high efficiency and high beam quality is essential for attosec- ond spectroscopy. We numerically investigate the supercontinuum generation in a neutral rare-gas medium driven by a two-color Bessel-Gauss beam. The results show that an efficient smooth supercontinuum in the plateau is obtained after propagation, and the spatial profile of the generated attosecond pulse is Gaussian-like with the divergence angle of 0.1 degree in the far field. This bright source with high beam quality is beneficial for detecting and controlling the microscopic pro…
Light-phase-sensitive techniques, such as coherent multidimensional spectroscopy, are well-established in a broad spectral range, already spanning from radio-frequencies in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to visible and ultraviolet wavelengths in nonlinear optics with table-top lasers. Here, the ability to tailor the phases of electromagnetic waves with high precision is essential. In the present contribution we achieve phase control of extreme-ultraviolet pulses from a free-electron laser (FEL) on the attosecond timescale in a Michelson-type all-reflective interferometric autocorrelat…
We have produced a soft x-ray supercontinuum with a pulse energy of 0.24-$μ$J using high-order harmonics from a multiterawatt, 10-Hz, stable, three-channel waveform synthesizer [Sci. Adv. eaay2802 (2020)]. We report here an attosecond streaking scheme, which is designed for measuring low-repetition-rate, high-energy, isolated attosecond pulses. The retrieved pulse duration is 226 as, which conclusively demonstrates the realization of 1.1-gigawatt isolated attosecond pulses at the generation point. The gigawatt-level peak power of this tabletop, isolated-attosecond-pulse light source is equival…
We report the generation and characterization of isolated attosecond XUV and VUV pulses generated simultaneously via HHG driven by few-cycle pulses using an in-line dual gas target system. One gas jet target was operated with Kr gas that optimized HHG in the 15-25 eV photon energy range (VUV), whilst the second gas jet target was operated in Ne gas to optimize the high harmonic generation around 90 eV (XUV). Appropriate filters were used to isolate the required spectral components to synthesize isolated pulses. Sn and In filters were used for the VUV region while a Zr filter was used for the X…
The carrier envelop phase (CEP) of isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs) is theoretically and experimentally investigated based on the assumption that a significant contribution originates from the measurable CEP jitter of the driving laser. By solving the timedependent Schrödinger equation, it is demonstrated that the attosecond CEP jitter of IAPs is minimized when the driving pulse is near its Fourier limit but with slightly negative chirp. Although, at present the utilization of the CEP of IAPs has limited applications, understanding and characterization of the CEP jitter of IAPs is the first s…

Two- and multi-dimensional spectroscopy is used in physics and chemistry to obtain structural and dynamical information that would otherwise be invisible by the projection into a one-dimensional data set such as a single emission or absorption spectrum. Here, we introduce a qualitatively new two-dimensional spectroscopy method by employing the carrier-envelope phase (CEP). Instead of measuring spectral vs. spectral information, the combined application of spectral interferometry and CEP control allows the measurement of otherwise inseparable temporal events on an attosecond time scale. As a sp…
We present experimental results showing the appearance of a near-continuum in the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) spectra of atomic and molecular species as the driving laser intensity of an infrared pulse increases. Detailed macroscopic simulations reveal that these near-continuum spectra are capable of producing IAPs in the far field if a proper spatial filter is applied. Further, our simulations show that the near-continuum spectra and the IAPs are a product of strong temporal and spatial reshaping (blue shift and defocusing) of the driving field. This offers a possibility of producing…
Doppler harmonic generation of a high-power laser on a relativistic plasma mirror is a promising path to produce bright attosecond light bursts. Yet, a major challenge has been to find a way to generate isolated attosecond pulses, better suited to timed-resolved experiments, rather than trains of pulses. A promising technique is the attosecond lighthouse effect, which consists in imprinting different propagation directions to successive attosecond pulses of the train, and then spatially filtering one pulse in the far field. However, in the relativistic regime, plasma mirrors get curved by the …
We theoretically investigate the generation of intense keV attosecond pulses in an orthogonally polarized multicycle midinfrared two-color laser field. It is demonstrated that multiple continuum-like humps, which have a spectral width of about twenty orders of harmonics and an intensity of about one order higher than adjacent normal harmonic peaks, are generated under proper two-color delays, owing to the reduction of the number of electron-ion recollisions and suppression of inter-half-cycle interference effect of multiple electron trajectories when the long wavelength midinfrared driving fie…

A proposal for a novel source of isolated attosecond XUV -- soft X-ray pulses with a well controlled carrier-envelope phase difference (CEP) is presented in the framework of nonlinear Thomson-backscattering. Based on the analytic solution of the Newton-Lorentz equations, the motion of a relativistic electron is calculated explicitly, for head-on collision with an intense fs laser pulse. By using the received formulae, the collective spectrum and the corresponding temporal shape of the radiation emitted by a mono-energetic electron bunch can be easily computed. For certain suitable and realisti…
Relativistic surface high harmonics have been considered a unique source for the generation of intense isolated attosecond pulses in the extreme ultra-violet (XUV) and X-ray spectral range. However, its experimental realization is still a challenging task requiring identification of the optimum conditions for the generation of isolated attosecond pulses as well as their temporal characterization. Here, we demonstrate measurements in both directions. Particularly, we have made a first step towards the temporal characterization of the emitted XUV radiation by adapting the attosecond streak camer…
Attosecond science promises to reveal the most fundamental electronic dynamics occurring in matter and it can develop further by meeting two linked technological goals related to high-order harmonic sources: higher photon flux (permitting to measure low cross-section processes) and improved spectral tunability (allowing selectivity in addressing specific electronic transitions). New developments come through parametric waveform synthesis, which provides control over the shape of high-energy electric field transients, enabling the creation of highly-tunable isolated attosecond pulses via high-h…
A new regime in the interaction of a two-colour ($ω$,$2ω$) laser with a nanometre-scale foil is identified, resulting in the emission of extremely intense, isolated attosecond pulses - even in the case of multi-cycle lasers. For foils irradiated by lasers exceeding the blow-out field strength (i.e. capable of fully separating electrons from the ion background), the addition of a second harmonic field results in the stabilization of the foil up to the blow-out intensity. This is then followed by a sharp transition to transparency that essentially occurs in a single optical cycle. During the tra…
Characterizing an isolated attosecond pulse (IAP) is essential for its potential applications. A complete characterization of an IAP ultimately requires the determination of its electric field in both time and space domains. However, previous methods, like the widely-used RABBITT and attosecond streaking, only measure the temporal profile of the attosecond pulse. Here we demonstrate an all-optical method for the measurement of the space-time properties of an IAP. By introducing a non-collinear perturbing pulse to the driving field, the process of IAP generation is modified both spatially and t…
We present a method of producing single attosecond pulses by high-order harmonic generation with multi-cycle nonlinear chirped driver laser pulses. The symmetry of the laser feld in several optical cycles near the pulse center is dramatically broken, and then the photons which cover a much broad spectrum burst almost only in one optical cycle. So an ultra-broad continuum spectrum appears in the high order harmonic spectrum, from which an isolated sub-50 attosecond pulse could be obtained. The results are almost independent of the length and chirp form of the driver laser pulse.
We demonstrate the complete reconstruction of the electric field of visible-infrared pulses with energy as low as a few tens of nanojoules. The technique allows for the reconstruction of the instantaneous electric field vector direction and magnitude, thus giving access to the characterisation of pulses with an arbitrary time-dependent polarisation state. The technique combines extreme ultraviolet interferometry with the generation of isolated attosecond pulses.
High-resolution Fourier-transform spectroscopy using table-top sources in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectral range is still in its infancy. In this contribution a significant advance is presented based on a Michelson-type all-reflective split-and-delay autocorrelator operating in a quasi amplitude splitting mode. The autocorrelator works under a grazing incidence angle in a broad spectral range $\mathrm{(10\,nm - 1\,μm)}$ providing collinear propagation of both pulse replicas and thus a constant phase difference across the beam profile. The compact instrument allows for XUV pulse autocorre…

We review the main research directions ongoing in the development of high-harmonic generation-based extreme ultraviolet sources for the synthesization and application of trains and isolated attosecond pulses to time-resolved spectroscopy. A few experimental and theoretical works will be discussed in connection to well-established attosecond techniques. In this context, we present the unique possibilities offered for time-resolved investigations on the attosecond timescale by the new Extreme Light Infrastructure Attosecond Light Pulse Source, which is currently under construction.
The creation of attosecond pulses via laser-plasma interaction has been a subject of great scientific interest for more than three decades. This process is investigated by using particle-in-cell simulation with varying the plasma and laser parameters. The steepness of the density gradient at the plasma-vacuum interface is examined to see how this parameter affects the high-order harmonic generations and isolated-attosecond pulse creation. The optimal density gradient lengths $L$ are explored within the relativistic oscillating mirror mechanism. Although the ideal gradient lengths for the full …
The quantum mechanical motion of electrons in molecules and solids occurs on the sub-femtosecond timescale. Consequently, the study of ultrafast electronic phenomena requires the generation of laser pulses shorter than 1 fs and of sufficient intensity to interact with their target with high probability. Probing these dynamics with atomic-site specificity requires the extension of sub-femtosecond pulses to the soft X-ray spectral region. Here we report the generation of isolated GW-scale soft X-ray attosecond pulses with an X-ray free-electron laser. Our source has a pulse energy that is six or…
Generation of ultrabroadband isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs) is essential for time-resolved applications in chemical and material sciences, as they have the potential to access the spectral water window region of chemical elements, which yet has to be established. Here we propose a numerical scheme for highly efficient high-order harmonic generation (HHG) and hence the generation of ultrabroadband IAPs in the XUV and soft x-ray regions. The scheme combines the use of chirped pulses with trapped electrons in copper transition-metal surfaces and takes advantage of the characteristic features o…
Sub-10-attosecond pulses with half-cycle electric fields provide exceptional options to detect and manipulate electrons in the atomic timescale. However, the availability of such pulses is still challenging. Here, we propose a method to generate isolated sub-10-attosecond half-cycle pulses based on a cascade process naturally happening in plasma. A 100s-attosecond pulse is first generated by shooting a moderate overdense plasma with a one-cycle femtosecond pulse. After that, the generated attosecond pulse cascadedly produce a sub-10-attosecond half-cycle pulse in the transmission direction by …
We present an innovative beamline for extreme ultraviolet (XUV)-infrared (IR) pump-probe reflection spectroscopy in solids with attosecond temporal resolution. The setup uses an actively stabilized interferometer, where attosecond pulse trains or isolated attosecond pulses are produced by high-order harmonic generation in gases. After collinear recombination, the attosecond XUV pulses and the femtosecond IR pulses are focused twice in sequence by toroidal mirrors, giving two spatially separated interaction regions. In the first region, the combination of a gas target with a time-of-flight spec…
The bottleneck for an attosecond science experiment is concluded to be the lack of a high-peak-power isolated attosecond pulse source. Therefore, currently, generating an intense attosecond pulse would be one of the highest priority goals. In this paper, we review a TW-class parallel three-channel waveform synthesizer for generating a gigawatt-scale soft-x-ray isolated attosecond pulse (IAP) using high-order harmonics generation (HHG). Simultaneously, using several stabilization methods, namely, the low-repetition-rate laser carrier-envelope phase stabilization, Mach-Zehnder interferometer, ba…
We derive an analytical expression, from classical electron trajectories in a laser field, that relates the breadth of a streaked photoelectron spectrum to the group-delay dispersion of an isolated attosecond pulse. Based on this analytical expression, we introduce a simple, efficient and robust procedure to instantly extract the attosecond pulse's chirp from the streaking measurement.

We first discuss the basic principles and recent advancements, including some of the important applications, of both UED and UEM.
