The formation of novel dynamical states for a collection of dust particles in two dimensions has been shown with the help of Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation. The charged dust particles interact with each other with Yukawa pair potential mimicking the screening due to plasma. Additionally, an external radial confining force has also been applied to the dust particles to keep them radially confined. When the particle number is low ( say a few), they get arranged on the radial location corresponding to multiple rings/shells. For specific numbers, such an arrangement of particles is stationary. However, for several cases, the cluster of dust particles relaxes to a state for which the dust particles on rings display inter-shell rotation. For a larger number of dust particles ( a few hundred for instance ) a novel equilibrium state with coherent rigid body displaying angular oscillation of the entire cluster is observed. A detailed characterization of the formation of these states in terms of particle number, coupling parameter, etc., has been provided.
The impacts of dust density inhomogeneity and dust size distribution (DSD) on linear dust acoustic (DA) wave propagation have been investigated theoretically in an inhomogeneous unmagnetized dusty plasma having powerlaw DSD. Two different types of wave modes, viz. slow and fast mode, are found to propagate in this inhomogeneous medium. It is shown that the linear dispersion characteristics of the DA waves are substantially affected by the DSD and density inhomogeneity. Also, it is found that the phase velocity increases with increasing dust density.
The nonlinear propagation of the dust-acoustic bright and dark envelope solitons in an opposite polarity dusty plasma system (composed of non-extensive $q$-distributed electrons, isothermal ions, and positively as well as negatively charged warm dust) have been theoretically investigated. The reductive perturbation method (which is valid for a small, but finite amplitude limit) is employed to derive the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Two types of modes (namely, fast and slow dust-acoustic (DA) modes) have been observed. The conditions for the modulational instability (MI) and its growth rate …
During the recent decade a steadily increasing number of papers devoted to so-called "quantum dusty plasmas" (QDP) appeared. These systems are combining the properties of dusty (i.e. micrometer to nanometer-sized particles containing) plasmas with quantum effects %(of electrons) appearing at high-density and/or low-temperature. Many exciting properties of QDP were predicted including nontrivial collective oscillations and linear and nonlinear waves. It was predicted that the results have relevance for dense astrophysical plasmas such as white dwarf stars, neutron stars, magnetars and laborator…
Complex plasmas consist of microparticles embedded in a low-temperature plasma and allow investigating various effects by tracing the motion of these microparticles. Dust density waves appear in complex plasmas as self-excited acoustic waves in the microparticle fluid at low neutral gas pressures. Here we show that various properties of these waves depend on the position of the microparticle cloud with respect to the plasma sheath and explain this finding in terms of the underlying ion-drift instability. These results may be helpful in better understanding the propagation of dust density waves…
An experimental investigation of the propagation characteristics of shock waves in an inhomogeneous dusty plasma is carried out in the Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device. A homogeneous dusty plasma, made up of poly-dispersive kaolin particles, is initially formed in a DC glow discharge Argon plasma by maintaining a dynamic equilibrium of the pumping speed and the gas feeding rate. Later, an equilibrium density inhomogeneity in the dust fluid is created by introducing an imbalance in the original dynamic equilibrium. Non-linear wave structures are then excited in this inhomogeneous dusty p…

The reductive perturbation method is employed to obtain the NLSE to explore the modulational instability (MI) conditions for DAWs as well as the formation and characteristics of gigantic rogue waves. The nonlinear and dispersion properties of the dusty plasma medium are the prime reasons be…
The standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is one of the elegant equations to find the information about the modulational instability criteria of dust-ion-acoustic (DIA) waves (DIAWs) and associated DIA rogue waves (DIARWs) in a three-component dusty plasma medium having inertialess super-thermal kappa distributed electrons, and inertial warm positive ions and negative dust grains. It can be seen that under the consideration of inertial warm ions along with inertial negatively charged dust grains, the plasma system supports both fast and slow DIA modes. The charge state and number dens…
Dusty plasma crystals have traditionally been observed and studied in radio frequency (RF) discharge plasmas and their formation in a DC glow discharge plasma remains experimentally challenging. We report the first ever observation of a stable dusty plasma Coulomb crystal in the cathode sheath region of a DC glow discharge plasma. The observations are made in the DPEx device where crystals of mono-disperse Melamine Formaldehyde grains are produced in the background of an Argon plasma. The crystalline nature of the structure is confirmed through a host of measurements that includes the radial p…
The formation of the gigantic dust-acoustic rouge waves (DARWs) in an electron depleted unmagnetized opposite polarity dusty plasma system is theoretically observed for the first time. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation (derived by utilizing the reductive perturbation method) has been analytically as well as numerically analyzed to identify the basic features (viz., height, thickness, and modulational instability, etc.) of DARWs. The results obtained form this investigation should be useful in understanding the basic properties of these rouge waves which can predict to be formed in electron de…
A phenomenological model using fluid theory is developed to show that the decay of two seemingly independent nonlinear structures namely the dust void and dust soliton strongly depends on the plasma ionization parameter in an unmagnetized complex plasma system. Numerical solution of model equations has shown that the evolution of dust voids and their subsequent decay in a time frame is intimately related with the ionization parameter. A similar result also holds good in case of dust solitons where stability of soliton is found to depend critically upon ionization parameter. Most importantly, i…

The relevant physical plasma parameters (viz., charge, mass, number density of positive and negative dust grains, and super-thermality of the positive ions, etc.) have rigorous impact to re…

The ionization equation of state (IEOS) for a cloud of the dust particles in the low-pressure gas discharge under microgravity conditions is proposed. IEOS relates pairs of the parameters specific for the charged components of dusty plasma. It is based on the modified collision enhance collection model adapted for the Wigner--Seitz cell model of the dust cloud. This model takes into account the effect of ion--atom collisions on the ion current to the dust particles and assumes that the screening length for the ion--particle interaction is of the same order of magnitude as the radius of the Wig…
The temperature of a dust ensemble in a dusty plasma is one of its most fundamental properties. Here, we present experiments using the configurational temperature as a for the temperature analysis in dusty plasmas. Using a model of the particle interactions, the configurational temperature allows us to determine the temperature of the dust ensemble from measurements of the particle positions, rather than particle velocities. The basic concept will be presented and the technique is applied to two-dimensional finite clusters as well as three-dimensional data from an extended dust cloud. Addition…
In this paper, the collective dynamics of the large aspect ratio dusty plasma is studied over a wide range of discharge parameters. An inductively coupled diffused plasma, which creates an electrostatic trap to confine the negatively charged grains, is used to form a large volume (or large aspect ratio) dusty plasma at low pressure. For introducing the dust grains into the potential well, a unique technique using a secondary DC glow discharge plasma is employed. The dust dynamics is recorded in a 2-dimension (2D) plane at a given axial location. The dust fluid exhibits wave like behavior at lo…
A theoretical study is presented for the propagation of Dust Ion Acoustic Waves in an unmagnetized four-component plasma, consisting of Maxwellian negative ions, cold mobile positive ions, $κ$-distributed electrons and positively charged dust grains. Based on the characteristics of Sagdeev pseudopotential and phase portraits, three types of nonlinear waves are observed --- solitons, double layers and supersolitons. The conditions for the existence of such nonlinear waves are highly sensitive to the plasma parameters. The results obtained in this study may be of wide relevance in the field of s…

Analysis of driven dust vortex flow is presented in a weakly magnetized plasma. The 2D hydrodynamic model is applied to the confined dust cloud in a non-uniform magnetic field in order to recover the dust vortex flow driven in a conservative force field setup, in absence of any non-conservative fields or dust charge variation. Although the time independent electric and magnetic fields included in the analysis provide conservative forcing mechanisms, when the a drift based mechanism, recently observed in a dusty plasma experiment by [M. The basic features of dust-acoustic (DA) waves (DAWs) in four component dusty plasma system (containing inertial cold and hot dust grains, inertialess non-extensive ions and electrons) have been theoretically investigated by deriving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The analytic analysis under consideration demonstrates two types of modes, namely, fast and slow DA modes. The unstable domain for the fast DA mode, which can be recognized by the critical wave number ($k_c$), gives rise to the DA rogue waves (DARWs). It is observed that the amplitude and width of the DARWs are significantly mod…
The space electron-ion-positive dust plasma system containing isothermal inertialess electron species, cold inertial ion species, and stationary positive (positivively charged) dust species is considered. The basic features of one dimensional (1D) planar and nonplanar subsonic solitary waves are investigated by the pseudo-potential and reductive perturbation methods, respectively. It is observed that the presence of the positive dust species reduces the phase speed of the ion-acoustic waves, and consequently supports the subsonic solitary waves with the positive wave potential in such a space …
