In this work we carry out quantitative measurements of particle and heat transport associated to SOL filaments in a tokamak, and relate density shoulder formation to the advection of energy in the far SOL. For the first time, this attempt includes direct measurements of ion and electron temperatures for background and filaments. With this aim, we combine data from a number of equivalent L-mode discharges from the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak in which different probe heads were installed on the midplane manipulator. This approach is validated by a comparison with independent diagnostics. Results indicate an increase of heat transport associated to filaments after the shoulder formation. Several centimeters into the SOL, filaments are still found to carry a substantial fraction (up to one fifth) of the power ejected at the separatrix.
A theoretical framework is developed to link the density profiles in the Scrape Off Layer (SOL) with the fluctuations (filaments) that generate them. The framework is based on the dynamics of independent filaments and their statistical behaviour and can be used to rigorously understand the mechanisms that lead to flattening and broadening of the SOL profiles as well as the radial increase of the relative fluctuation amplitude.
The here presented work studies the dynamics of filaments using 3D fluid simulations in the presence of detached background profiles. It was found that evolving the neutrals on the time-scale of the filament did not have a significant impact on the dynamics of the filament. In general a decreasing filament velocity with increasing plasma background density has been observed, with the exception of detachment onset, where a temporarily increase in radial velocity occurs. The decreasing trend with temporary increase was found for filaments around the critical size and larger, while smaller filame…
The propagation of filaments in the Scrape Off Layer (SOL) of tokamaks largely determine the plasma profiles in the region. In a conduction limited SOL, parallel temperature gradients are expected, such that the resistance to parallel currents is greater at the target than further upstream. Since the perpendicular motion of an isolated filament is largely determined by balance of currents that flow through it, this may be expected to affect filament transport. 3D simulations have thus been used to study the influence of enhanced parallel resistivity on the dynamics of filaments. Filaments with…
This paper presents the effect of self-consistent plasma backgrounds including plasma-neutral interactions, on the dynamics of filament propagation. The principle focus is on the influence of the neutrals on the filament through both direct interactions and through their influence on the plasma background. Both direct and indirect interactions influence the motion of filaments. A monotonic increase of filament peak velocity with upstream electron temperature is observed, while a decrease with increasing electron density is observed. If ordered by the target temperature, the density dependence …
A complete model of the dynamics of scrape-off layer filaments will be rather complex, including temperature evolution, three dimensional geometry and finite Larmor radius effects. However, the basic mechanism of $\boldsymbol{E}\times\boldsymbol{B}$ advection due to electrostatic potential driven by the diamagnetic current can be captured in a much simpler model; a complete understanding of the physics in the simpler model will then aid interpretation of more complex simulations, by allowing the new effects to be disentangled. Here we consider such a simple model, which assumes cold ions and i…
A four-dimensional plasma model able to describe the scrape-off layer region of tokamak devices at arbitrary collisionality is derived in the drift-reduced limit. The basis of the model is provided by a drift-kinetic equation that retains the full non-linear Coulomb collision operator and describes arbitrarily far from equilibrium distribution functions. By expanding the dependence of distribution function over the perpendicular velocity in a Laguerre polynomial basis and integrating over the perpendicular velocity, a set of four-dimensional moment equations for the expansion coefficients of t…
The interaction of radio-frequency (RF) waves with edge turbulence modifies the incident wave-spectrum, and can significantly affect RF heating and current drive in tokamaks. Previous LH scattering models have either used the weak-turbulence approximation, or treated more realistic, filamentary turbulence in the ray-tracing limit. In this work, a new model is introduced which retains full-wave effects of RF scattering in filamentary turbulence. First, a Mie-scattering technique models the interaction of an incident wave with a single Gaussian filament. Next, an effective differential scatterin…
A theoretical framework is developed to clarify the relation between the profiles of density and temperature in the Scrape Off Layer (SOL) with the fluctuations (filaments) that generate them. The framework is based on the dynamics of independent filaments and on their statistical behaviour and can be used to rigorously understand the mechanisms that lead to the non-exponential nature of the radial SOL profiles as well as the increase of the relative fluctuation amplitude in the far SOL. Several models for the dynamics of the filaments, which can be applied to the framework, are derived and di…
This paper presents the use of a novel modelling technique based around intermittent transport due to filament motion, to interpret experimental profile and fluctuation data in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of JET during the onset and evolution of a density profile shoulder. A baseline case is established, prior to shoulder formation, and the stochastic model is shown to be capable of simultaneously matching the time averaged profile measurement as well as the PDF shape and autocorrelation function from the ion-saturation current time series at the outer wall. Aspects of the stochastic model are …
Intermittent fluctuations in the TCV scrape-off layer have been investigated by analysing long Langmuir probe data time series under stationary conditions, allowing calculation of fluctuation statistics with high accuracy. The ion saturation current signal is dominated by the frequent occurrence of large-amplitude bursts attributed to filament structures moving through the scrape-off layer. The average burst shape is well described by a double-exponential wave-form with constant duration, while the waiting times and peak amplitudes of the bursts both have an exponential distribution. Associate…
This paper presents simulations of isolated 3D filaments in a slab geometry obtained using a 3D reduced fluid code. First, systematic scans were performed to investigate how the dynamics of a filament are affected by its amplitude, perpendicular size and parallel extent. The perpendicular size of the filament was found to have a strong influence on its motions, as it determined the relative importance of parallel currents to polarisation and viscous currents, whilst drift-wave instabilities were observed if the initial amplitude of the blob was increased sufficiently. Next, the 3D simulations …
The effect of varying magnetic shear on scrape-off layer turbulence and profiles is studied via electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations of a helical scrape-off layer model. We develop a model helical geometry with magnetic shear and a corresponding field-aligned coordinate system, which is used for simulations with the Gkeyll code. We find that perpendicular transport is reduced in cases with stronger shear, resulting in higher peak particle and heat fluxes to the endplates. Electromagnetic effects slightly increase transport in strong shear cases.
A multidiagnostic approach, utilizing Langmuir probes in the midplane, X-point and divertor walls, along with Lithium beam and infrared measurements is employed to evaluate the evolution of the Scrape-off Layer (SOL) of ASDEX Upgrade across the L-mode density transition leading to the formation of a density shoulder. The flattening of the SOL density profiles is linked to a regime change of filaments, which become faster and larger, and to a similar flattening of the $q_{\parallel}$ profile. This transition is related to the beginning of outer divertor detachment and leads to the onset of a ve…
Recently the Li-Beam Emission Spectroscopy (Li-BES) system on COMPASS has reached its full diagnostic power in terms of routine automatic operation in any kind of plasma scenarios and it is normally used as a standard tool for reconstruction of ultra fast density profiles in the edge region of COMPASS plasmas. The purpose of this study is to investigate the advantages and limitations of the COMPASS Li-BES system in characterizing plasma electron density fluctuations. We show how the atomic physics of plasma-beam interactions can affect the interpretation of the measurement at different radial …
Numerical simulations of L-mode plasma turbulence in the Scrape Off Layer of MAST are presented. Relevant features of the boundary plasma, such as the thickness of the density layer or the statistics of the fluctuations are related to the edge density and temperature, plasma current and parallel connection length. It is found that the density profile is weakly affected by the edge density, it broadens when the current or the temperature are decreased while the connection length has the opposite effect. The statistics of the turbulence is relatively insensitive to variations of all the edge par…
Plasma fluctuations in the scrape-off layer of the Alcator C-Mod tokamak in ohmic and high confinement modes have been analyzed using gas puff imaging data. In all cases investigated, the time series of emission from a single spatially-resolved view into the gas puff are dominated by large-amplitude bursts, attributed to blob-like filament structures moving radially outwards and poloidally. There is a remarkable similarity of the fluctuation statistics in ohmic plasmas and in edge localized mode-free and enhanced D-alpha high confinement mode plasmas. Conditionally averaged wave forms have a t…
Turbulent transport of trace impurities impurities in the edge and scrape-off-layer of tokamak fusion plasmas is modelled by three dimensional electromagnetic gyrofluid computations including evolution of plasma profile gradients. The source function of impurity ions is dynamically computed from pre-determined measured and calculated electron impact ionization cross section data. The simulations describe the generation and further passive turbulent E-cross-B advection of the impurities by intermittent fluctuations and coherent filamentary structures (blobs) across the scrape-off-layer.
Intermittent fluctuations in the boundary of magnetically confined plasmas are investigated by numerical turbulence simulations of a reduced fluid model describing the evolution of the plasma density and electric drift vorticity in the two-dimensional plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. Two different cases are considered, one describing resistive drift waves in the edge region and another including only the interchange instability due to unfavorable magnetic field curvature in the scrape-off layer. Analysis of long data time series obtained by single-point recordings are compared to pre…
Theory-based scaling laws of the near and far scrape-off layer (SOL) widths are analytically derived for L-mode diverted tokamak discharges by using a two-fluid model. The near SOL pressure and density decay lengths are obtained by leveraging a balance among the power source, perpendicular turbulent transport across the separatrix, and parallel losses at the vessel wall, while the far SOL pressure and density decay lengths are derived by using a model of intermittent transport mediated by filaments. The analytical estimates of the pressure decay length in the near SOL is then compared to the r…

Numerical simulations of interchange turbulence in the Scrape-Off Layer are performed in a regime relevant for a specific L-mode MAST (Mega Ampere Spherical Tokamak) discharge. Such a discharge was diagnosed with a reciprocating arm equipped with a Gundestrup probe. A detailed comparison of the average and statistical properties of the simulated and experimental ion saturation current is performed. Good agreement is found in the time averaged radial profile, in the probability distribution functions (PDFs) and in qualitative features of the signals such as the shape, duration and separation of…
This paper presents a numerical investigation of isolated filament dynamics in a simulation geometry representative of the scrape-off layer (SOL) of the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) previously studied in [N.R.Walkden et.al, Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion, 55 (2013) 105005]. This paper focuses on the evolution of filament cross-sections at the outboard midplane and investigates the scaling of the centre of mass velocity of the filament cross-section with filament width and electron temperature. By decoupling the vorticity equation into even and odd parity components about the centre of the f…
A new Gas Puff Imaging (GPI) diagnostic has been installed on the TCV tokamak, providing two-dimensional insights into Scrape-Off-Layer (SOL) turbulence dynamics above, at and below the magnetic X-point. A detailed study in L-mode, attached, lower single-null discharges shows that statistical properties have little poloidal variations, while vast differences are present in the 2D behaviour of intermittent filaments. Strongly elongated filaments, just above the X-point and in the divertor far-SOL, show a good consistency in shape and dynamics with field-line tracing from filaments at the outboa…
Long-lived, highly localized structures called palm tree modes (PTM) are observed in the edge plasma of the JET tokamak. Although PTMs are well documented, little is known about the mechanisms which produce these structures. In the case of the PTM, an ELM-postcursor, its genesis is usually explained by ergodisation of the magnetic field due to edge localized modes and the appearance of a seed magnetic island which evolves into a PTM later. In this study we try to invoke a creation mechanism based on the concepts and observations in edge plasma turbulence. An interesting aspect of plasma turbul…
In a wide variety of natural and laboratory magnetized plasmas, filaments appear as a result of interchange instability. These convective structures substantially enhance transport in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field. According to filament models, their propagation may follow different regimes depending on the parallel closure of charge conservation. This is of paramount importance in magnetic fusion plasmas, as high collisionality in the scrape-off layer may trigger a regime transition leading to strongly enhanced perpendicular particle fluxes. This work reports for the first…
This paper studies the turbulent kinetic energy ($k_\perp$) in 2D isothermal electrostatic interchange-dominated ExB drift turbulence in the scrape-off layer and its relation to particle transport. An evolution equation for the former is analytically derived from the underlying turbulence equations. Evaluating this equation shows that the dominant source for the turbulent kinetic energy is due to interchange drive, while the parallel current loss to the sheath constitutes the main sink. Perpendicular transport of the turbulent kinetic energy seems to play a minor role in the balance equation. …
The instabilities of relativistic ion beams in a relativistically hot electron background are derived for general propagation angles. It is shown that the Weibel instability in the direction perpendicular to the streaming direction is the fastest growing mode, and probably the first to appear, consistent with the aligned filaments that are seen in PIC simulations. Oblique, quasiperpendicular modes grow almost as fast, as the growth rate varies only moderately with angle, and they may distort or corrugate the filaments after the perpendicular mode saturates.
