Using a set of cosmological hydro-dynamical simulations, we constrained the properties of primordial magnetic fields by studying their impact on the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies. We performed a large set of simulations (8 dark matter only and 72 chemo-hydrodynamical) including primordial magnetic fields through the extra density fluctuations they induce at small length scales ($k \geq 10\,h\,\rm{Mpc^{-1}}$) in the matter power spectrum. We explored a large variety of primordial magnetic fields with strength $B_λ$ ranging from $0.05$ to $0.50\,\textrm{nG}$ and magnetic energy spectrum slopes $n_B$ from $-2.9$ to $-2.1$. Strong magnetic fields characterized by a high amplitude ($B_λ=0.50,\,0.20\,\textrm{nG}$ with $n_B=-2.9$) or by a steep initial power spectrum slope ($n_B=-2.1,-2.4$, with $B_λ=0.05\,\textrm{nG}$) induce perturbations in the mass scales from $10^7$ to $10^9\,\rm{M}_{\odot}$. In this context emerging galaxies see their star formation rate strongly boosted. They become more luminous and metal rich than their counterparts without primordial magnetic fields. Such strong fields are ruled out by their inability to reproduce the observed scaling relations of dwarf galaxies. They predict dwarf galaxies to be at the origin of an unrealistically early reionization of the Universe and also overproduce luminous satellites in the Local Group. Weaker magnetic fields impacting the primordial density field at corresponding masses $\lesssim 10^6\,\rm{M}_{\odot}$, produce a large number of mini dark halos orbiting the dwarfs, however out of reach for current lensing observations. This study allows for the first time to constrain the properties of primordial magnetic fields based on realistic cosmological simulations of dwarf galaxies.
Recent gamma-ray and cosmic-ray observations have put strong constraints on the amount of primordial black holes (PBHs) in our universe. In this article, we use the archival radio data of the inner Galactic Centre to constrain the PBH to dark matter ratio for three different PBH mass distributions including monochromatic, log-normal and power-law. We show that the amount of PBHs only constitutes a very minor component of dark matter at the Galactic Centre for a large parameter space.
The upcoming LISA mission is the only experiment that will allow us to study the Milky Way's structure using gravitational wave signals from Galactic double white dwarfs (DWDs). The total number of expected detections exceeds $10^5$. Furthermore, up to a hundred DWDs can be simultaneously detected in both gravitational and optical radiation (e.g. with Gaia and LSST as eclipsing), making DWDs ideal sources for performing a multi-messenger tomography of the Galaxy. We show that LISA will detect DWDs everywhere, mapping also the opposite side of the Galaxy. This complete coverage will: (1) provid…
We discuss and test possible evolutionary connections between Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCDs) and other types of dwarf galaxies. BCDs provide ideal laboratories to study intense star formation episodes in low mass dwarf galaxies, and have sometimes been considered a short-lived evolutionary stage between types of dwarf galaxies. To test these connections, we consider a sample of BCDs as well as a comparison sample of nearby galaxies from the Local Volume Legacy (LVL) survey for context. We fit the multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SED, far-ultra-violet to far-infrared) of each…
The presence of primordial magnetic fields increases the minimum halo mass in which star formation is possible at high redshifts. Estimates of the dynamical mass of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs) within their half-light radius constrain their virialized halo mass before their infall into the Milky Way. The inferred halo mass and formation redshift of the UFDs place upper bounds on the primordial comoving magnetic field, $B_0$. We derive an upper limit of $0.50\pm 0.086$ ($0.31\pm 0.04$) nG on $B_0~$ assuming the average formation redshift of the UFD host halos is $z_{\rm form}=$ 10 (20), re…
Black holes formed in the early universe, prior to the formation of stars, can exist as dark matter and also contribute to the black hole merger events observed in gravitational waves. We set a new limit on the abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs) by considering interactions of PBHs with the interstellar medium, which result in the heating of gas. We examine generic heating mechanisms, including emission from the accretion disk, dynamical friction, and disk outflows. Using the data from the Leo T dwarf galaxy, we set a new cosmology-independent limit on the abundance of PBHs in the mass …
We use Monte Carlo simulations to explore the statistical challenges of constraining the characteristic mass ($m_c$) and width ($σ$) of a lognormal sub-solar initial mass function (IMF) in Local Group dwarf galaxies using direct star counts. For a typical Milky Way (MW) satellite ($M_{V} = -8$), jointly constraining $m_c$ and $σ$ to a precision of $\lesssim 20\%$ requires that observations be complete to $\lesssim 0.2 M_{\odot}$, if the IMF is similar to the MW IMF. A similar statistical precision can be obtained if observations are only complete down to $0.4M_{\odot}$, but this requires measu…
We present a new near-field cosmological probe of the initial mass function (IMF) of the first stars. Specifically, we constrain the lower-mass limit of the Population III (Pop III) IMF with the total number of stars in large, unbiased surveys of the Milky Way. We model the early star formation history in a Milky Way-like halo with a semi-analytic approach, based on Monte-Carlo sampling of dark matter merger trees, combined with a treatment of the most important feedback mechanisms. Assuming a logarithmically flat Pop III IMF and varying its low mass limit, we derive the number of expected sur…
Recent observational studies of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) have discovered massive black holes (MBHs) with masses of more than ${10^6~\rm M_\odot}$, in their central regions. We here consider that these MBHs can be formed through merging of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBH), with masses of ${[10^3-10^5]~{\rm M}_{\odot}}$, within the stellar nuclei of dwarf galaxies, which are progenitors of UCDs. We numerically investigate this formation process for a wide range of model parameters using N-body simulations. This means that IMBH growth and feedback is neglected in this study. We fin…
Simulating dwarf galaxy halos in a reionizing Universe puts severe constraints on the sub-grid model employed in the simulations. Using the same sub-grid model that works for simulations without a UV-background (UVB) results in gas poor galaxies that stop forming stars very early on, except for halos with high masses. This is in strong disagreement with observed galaxies, which are gas rich and star forming down to a much lower mass range. To resolve this discrepancy, we ran a large suite of isolated dwarf galaxy simulations to explore a wide variety of sub-grid models and parameters, includin…
We use high-resolution N-body simulations to follow the formation and evolution of tidal streams associated to dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). The dSph models are embedded in dark matter (DM) haloes with either a centrally-divergent 'cusp', or an homogeneous-density 'core'. In agreement with previous studies, we find that as tides strip the galaxy the evolution of the half-light radius and the averaged velocity dispersion follows well-defined tracks that are mainly controlled by the amount of mass lost. Crucially, the evolutionary tracks behave differently depending on the shape of the DM p…
Globular clusters (GC) are important objects for tracing the early evolution of a galaxy. We study the relation between the properties of globular cluster systems - as quantified by the GC specific frequency (SN) - and the properties of their host galaxies. In order to understand the origin of the relation between the GC specific frequency (SN) and galaxy mass, we devise a theoretical model for the specific frequency (SN,th). GC erosion is considered to be an important aspect for shaping this relation, since observations show that galaxies with low densities have a higher SN, while high densit…
In this paper, we consider the hypothesis that fractions of dark matter could be constituted by primordial black holes (PBHs). To test this possibility, we work out the observational properties of a static black hole embedded in the dark matter envelope made of a PBH source. The corresponding modifications of geometry due to such a physical system are investigated, with a particular focus on the accretion disk luminosity in spiral galaxies. The impact of the PBH presence is analyzed through modification of the disk luminosity and kinematic quantities. Thus, we discuss possible constraints on t…
We study the density structures of dark matter subhalos for both cold dark matter and self-interacting dark matter models using high-resolution cosmological $N$-body simulations. We quantify subhalo's central density at 150 pc from the center of each subhalo at the classical dwarf spheroidal and ultrafaint dwarf scales found in Milky-Way sized halos. By comparing them with observations, we find that the self-interacting scattering cross-section of $σ/m<3\ \rm{cm^{2}g^{-1}}$ is favored. Due to the combination of hosts' tide and self-interactions, the central density of subhalos with small peric…
White dwarfs comprise 95% of all stellar remnants, and are thus an excellent tracer of old stellar populations in the Milky Way. Current and planned telescopes are not able to directly probe the white dwarf population in its entirety due to its inherently low luminosity. However, the Galactic population of double white dwarf binaries gives rise to a millihertz gravitational-wave foreground detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Here we show how characterizing this foreground's angular power spectrum will enable us to probe the Galactic structure in a novel way and measure…
The age-metallicity relation is a fundamental tool for constraining the chemical evolution of the Galactic disc. In this work we analyse the observational properties of this relation using binary stars that have not interacted consisting of a white dwarf - from which we can derive the total age of the system - and a main sequence star - from which we can derive the metallicity as traced by the [Fe/H] abundances. Our sample consists of 46 widely separated, but unresolved spectroscopic binaries identified within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and 189 white dwarf plus main sequence common proper m…
Gravitational waves from binary black holes that are gravitationally lensed can be distorted by small microlenses along the line of sight. Microlenses with masses of a few tens of solar masses, and that are close to a critical curve in the lens plane, can introduce a time delay of a few millisecond. Such time delay would result in distinctive interference patterns in the gravitational wave that can be measured with current experiments such as LIGO/Virgo. We consider the particular case of primordial black holes with masses between 5 and 50 solar masses acting as microlenses. We study the effec…
We performed a series of high-resolution $N$-body simulations to examine whether dark matter candidates in the form of primordial black holes (PBHs) can solve the cusp-core problem in low-mass dwarf galaxies. If some fraction of the dark matter in low-mass dwarf galaxies consists of PBHs and the rest is cold dark matter, dynamical heating of the cold dark matter by the PBHs induces a cusp-to-core transition in the total dark matter profile. The mechanism works for PBHs in the 25-100 M$_{\sun}$ mass window, consistent with the LIGO detections, but requires a lower limit on the PBH mass fraction…
There is growing observational evidence for dwarf galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN), including hints of AGN-driven outflows in dwarfs. However, in the common theoretical model of galaxy formation, efficient supernova (SN) feedback is the tool of choice for regulating star formation in the low-mass regime. In this paper, we present a suite of high-resolution cosmological dwarf zoom-in simulations relaxing the assumption of strong SN feedback, with the goal to determine whether more moderate SN feedback in combination with an efficient AGN could be a suitable alternative. Importantly…
The ground-breaking detections of gravitational waves from black hole mergers by LIGO have rekindled interest in primordial black holes (PBHs) and the possibility of dark matter being composed of PBHs. It has been suggested that PBHs of tens of solar masses could serve as dark matter candidates. Recent analytical studies demonstrated that compact ultra-faint dwarf galaxies can serve as a sensitive test for the PBH dark matter hypothesis, since stars in such a halo-dominated system would be heated by the more massive PBHs, their present-day distribution can provide strong constraints on PBH mas…
