Starting from first principles, we derive the fundamental equations that relate the $n$-point correlation functions in real and redshift space. Our result generalises the so-called `streaming model' to higher-order statistics: the full $n$-point correlation in redshift-space is obtained as an integral of its real-space counterpart times the joint probability density of $n-1$ relative line-of-sight peculiar velocities. Equations for the connected $n$-point correlation functions are obtained by recursively applying the generalised streaming model for decreasing $n$. Our results are exact within the distant-observer approximation and completely independent of the nature of the tracers for which the correlations are evaluated. Focusing on 3-point statistics, we use an $N$-body simulation to study the joint probability density function of the relative line-of-sight velocities of pairs of particles in a triplet. On large scales, we find that this distribution is approximately Gaussian and that its moments can be accurately computed with standard perturbation theory. We use this information to formulate a phenomenological 3-point Gaussian streaming model. A practical implementation is obtained by using perturbation theory at leading order to approximate several statistics in real space. In spite of this simplification, the resulting predictions for the matter 3-point correlation function in redshift space are in rather good agreement with measurements performed in the simulation. We discuss the limitations of the simplified model and suggest a number of possible improvements. Our results find direct applications in the analysis of galaxy clustering but also set the basis for studying 3-point statistics with future peculiar-velocity surveys and experiments based on the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect.
Baryonic streaming motions produced prior to the epoch of recombination became supersonic during the cosmic dark ages. Various studies suggest that such streaming velocities change the halo statistics and also influence the formation of Population III stars. In this study, we aim to explore the impact of streaming velocities on the formation of supermassive black holes at $z>10$ via the direct collapse scenario. To accomplish this goal, we perform cosmological large eddy simulations for two halos of a few times $\rm 10^{7} M_{\odot}$ with initial streaming velocities of 3, 6 and 9 $\rm km/s$. …
It has recently been demonstrated that coherent relative streaming velocities of order 30 km / s between dark matter and gas permeated the universe on scales below a few Mpc directly after recombination. We here use a series of high-resolution moving-mesh calculations to show that these supersonic motions significantly influence the virialization of the gas in minihalos, and delay the formation of the first stars. As the gas streams into minihalos with bulk velocities around 1 km / s at z ~ 20, the additional momentum and energy input reduces the gas fractions and central densities of the halo…
Both multi-streaming (random motion) and bulk motion cause the Finger-of-God (FoG) effect in redshift space distortion (RSD). We apply a direct measurement of the multi-streaming effect in RSD from simulations, proving that it induces an additional, non-negligible FoG damping to the redshift space density power spectrum. We show that, including the multi-streaming effect, the RSD modelling is significantly improved. We also provide a theoretical explanation based on halo model for the measured effect, including a fitting formula with one to two free parameters. The improved understanding of Fo…
At the epoch of decoupling, cosmic baryons had supersonic velocities relative to the dark matter that were coherent on large scales. These velocities subsequently slow the growth of small-scale structure and, via feedback processes, can influence the formation of larger galaxies. We examine the effect of streaming velocities on the galaxy correlation function, including all leading-order contributions for the first time. We find that the impact on the BAO peak is dramatically enhanced (by a factor of ~5) over the results of previous investigations, with the primary new effect due to advection:…
The formation of globular clusters and their relation to the distribution of dark matter have long puzzled astronomers. One of the most recently-proposed globular cluster formation channels ties ancient star clusters to the large-scale streaming velocity of baryons relative to dark matter in the early Universe. These streaming velocities affect the global infall of baryons into dark matter halos, the high-redshift halo mass function, and the earliest generations of stars. In some cases, streaming velocities may result in dense regions of dark-matter-free gas that becomes Jeans unstable, potent…
We evaluate the effect of a supersonic relative velocity between the baryons and dark matter on the thermal and density evolution of the first gas clouds at z < 50. Through a series of cosmological simulations, initialized at z=100 with a range of relative streaming velocities and minihalo formation redshifts, we find that the typical streaming velocities will have little effect on the gas evolution. Once the collapse begins, the subsequent evolution of the gas will be nearly indistinguishable from the case of no streaming, and star formation will still proceed in the same way, with no change …
The origins of the ~10^9 Msun quasar supermassive black holes (BHs) at redshifts z > 6 remain a theoretical puzzle. One possibility is that they grew from ~10^5 Msun BHs formed in the 'direct collapse' of pristine, atomic-cooling (temperatures T ~ 8000 K; PAC) gas that did not fragment to form ordinary stars due to a lack of molecular hydrogen and metals. We propose that baryonic streaming---the relic relative motion of gas with respect to dark matter from cosmological recombination---provides a natural mechanism for establishing the conditions necessary for direct collapse. This effect delays…
The streaming model describes the mapping between real and redshift space for 2-point clustering statistics. Its key element is the probability density function (PDF) of line-of-sight pairwise peculiar velocities. Following a kinetic-theory approach, we derive the fundamental equations of the streaming model for ordered and unordered pairs. In the first case, we recover the classic equation while we demonstrate that modifications are necessary for unordered pairs. We then discuss several statistical properties of the pairwise velocities for DM particles and haloes by using a suite of high-reso…
How, when and where the first stars formed are fundamental questions regarding the epoch of Cosmic Dawn. A second order effect in the fluid equations was recently found to make a significant contribution: an offset velocity between gas and dark matter, the so-called streaming velocity. Previous simulations of a limited number of low-mass dark matter haloes suggest that this streaming velocity can delay the formation of the first stars and decrease halo gas fractions and the halo mass function in the low mass regime. However, a systematic exploration of its effects in a large sample of haloes h…
We have studied the galaxy-group cross-correlations in redshift space for the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) Survey. We use a set of mock GAMA galaxy and group catalogues to develop and test a novel 'halo streaming' model for redshift-space distortions. This treats 2-halo correlations via the streaming model, plus an empirical 1-halo term derived from the mocks, allowing accurate modelling into the nonlinear regime. In order to probe the robustness of the growth rate inferred from redshift-space distortions, we divide galaxies by colour, and divide groups according to their total stellar mass…
The way that peculiar velocities are often inferred from measurements of distances and redshifts makes an approximation, v_p = cz-H_0 D, that gives significant errors even at relatively low redshifts (overestimates peculiar velocity by ~ 100 km/s at z~0.04). Here we demonstrate where the approximation breaks down, the systematic offset it introduces, and how the exact calculation should be implemented.
Models of the decoupling of baryons and photons during the recombination epoch predict the existence of a large-scale velocity offset between baryons and dark matter at later times, the so-called streaming velocity. In this paper, we use high resolution numerical simulations to investigate the impact of this streaming velocity on the spin and shape distributions of high-redshift minihalos, the formation sites of the earliest generation of stars. We find that the presence of a streaming velocity has a negligible effect on the spin and shape of the dark matter component of the minihalos. However…
We study the velocities of the accretion along streams from the cosmic web into massive galaxies at high redshift with the help of three different suites of AMR hydrodynamical cosmological simulations. The results are compared to free-fall velocities and to the sound speeds of the hot ambient medium. The sound speed of the hot ambient medium is calculated using two different methods to determine the medium's temperature. We find that the simulated cold stream velocities are in violent disagreement with the corresponding free-fall profiles. The sound speed is a better albeit not always correct …
Observations of quasars at redshifts z > 6 reveal that 10^9 Msol supermassive black holes (SMBHs) had already formed when the Universe was < 0.9 Gyr old. One hypothesis for the origins of these SMBHs is that they grew from the remnants of the first generation of massive stars, which formed in low-mass (~ 10^5 to 10^6 Msol) dark matter minihaloes at z > 20. This is the regime where baryonic streaming motions--the relative velocities of baryons with respect to dark matter in the early Universe--most strongly inhibit star formation by suppressing gas infall and cooling. We investigate the impact …
Peculiar velocities are an important probe of the growth rate of mass density fluctuations in the Universe. Most previous studies have focussed exclusively on measuring peculiar velocities at intermediate ($0.2 < z < 1$) redshifts using statistical redshift-space distortions. Here we emphasize the power of peculiar velocities obtained directly from distance measurements at low redshift ($z \lesssim 0.05$), and show that these data break the usual degeneracies in the Ω_{m,0} -- $σ_{8,0}$ parameter space. Using only peculiar velocity data, we find $Ω_{m,0} = 0.259\pm0.045$ and $σ_{8,0} = 0.748\p…
The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale acts as a standard ruler for measuring cosmological distances and has therefore emerged as a leading probe of cosmic expansion history. However, any physical effect that alters the length of the ruler can lead to a bias in our determination of distance and expansion rate. One of these physical effects is the streaming velocity, the relative velocity between baryons and dark matter in the early Universe, which couples to the BAO scale due to their common origin in acoustic waves at recombination. In this work, we investigate the impact of streaming ve…
A critical dark matter halo mass ($M_{\rm crit}$) for Population III (Pop III) stars can be defined as the typical minimum halo mass that hosts sufficient cold dense gas required for the formation of the first stars. The presence of Lyman-Werner (UV) radiation, which can dissociate molecular hydrogen, and the baryon-dark matter streaming velocity both delay the formation of Pop III stars by increasing $M_{\rm crit}$. In this work, we constrain $M_{\rm crit}$ as a function of Lyman-Werner flux (including self-shielding), baryon-dark matter streaming, and redshift using cosmological simulations …
The most intriguing question of modern astronomy is the question of our Universe formation. The Hubble diagram analysis with Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) is widely used to estimate the cosmological parameters with high accuracy. The cosmological measurements allow us to better understand the early stages of the Universe evolution. Nevertheless, the redshift on the SN Ia Hubble diagram includes the contribution from the unknown peculiar velocities that decreases the accuracy of such measurements. We consider the contamination of peculiar velocities of the host galaxies for those SNe that explode…
The first stars in the Universe, the so-called Population III stars, form in small dark matter minihaloes with virial temperatures $T_{\rm vir} < 10^{4}$~K. Cooling in these minihaloes is dominated by molecular hydrogen (H$_{2}$), and so Population III star formation is only possible in those minihaloes that form enough H$_{2}$ to cool on a short timescale. As H$_{2}$ cooling is more effective in more massive minihaloes, there is therefore a critical halo mass scale $M_{\rm min}$ above which Population III star formation first becomes possible. Two important processes can alter this minimum ma…
We explore and compare different ways large-scale structure observables in redshift-space and real space can be connected. These include direct computation in Lagrangian space, moment expansions and two formulations of the streaming model. We derive for the first time a Fourier space version of the streaming model, which yields an algebraic relation between the real- and redshift-space power spectra which can be compared to earlier, phenomenological models. By considering the redshift-space 2-point function in both configuration and Fourier space, we show how to generalize the Gaussian streami…
The nature of structure formation around the particle free streaming scale is still far from understood. Many attempts to simulate hot, warm, and cold dark matter cosmologies with a free streaming cutoff have been performed with cosmological particle-based simulations, but they all suffer from spurious structure formation at scales below their respective free streaming scales -- i.e. where the physics of halo formation is most affected by free streaming. We perform a series of high resolution numerical simulations of different WDM models, and develop an approximate method to subtract artificia…
The relative velocity between baryons and dark matter in the early Universe can suppress the formation of small-scale baryonic structure and leave an imprint on the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale at low redshifts after reionization. This "streaming velocity" affects the post-reionization gas distribution by directly reducing the abundance of pre-existing mini-halos ($\lesssim 10^7 M_{\bigodot}$) that could be destroyed by reionization and indirectly modulating reionization history via photoionization within these mini-halos. In this work, we investigate the effect of streaming velocit…
We calculate the dark matter halo correlation function in redshift space using the Gaussian streaming model (GSM). To determine the scale dependent functions entering the streaming model we use local Lagrangian bias together with Convolution Lagrangian perturbation theory (CLPT) which constitutes an approximation to the Post-Zel'dovich approximation. On the basis of N-body simulations we demonstrate that a smoothing of the initial conditions with the Lagrangian radius improves the Zel'dovich approximation and its ability to predict the displacement field of proto-halos. Based on this observati…
Direct measurements of peculiar velocities of galaxies and clusters of galaxies can in principle provide explicit information on the three dimensional mass distribution, but this information is modulated by the fact that velocity field is sampled at galaxy positions, and is thus probing galaxy momentum. We derive expressions for the cross power spectrum between the density and momentum field and the auto spectrum of the momentum field in redshift space, by extending the distribution function method to these statistics. The resulting momentum cross and auto power spectra in redshift space are e…
We present a new model for the cross-covariance between galaxy redshift-space distortions and peculiar velocities. We combine this with the auto-covariance models of both probes in a fully self-consistent, maximum-likelihood method, allowing us to extract enhanced cosmological parameter constraints. When applying our method to the 6-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS), our constraint on the growth rate of structure is $fσ_8 = 0.384 \pm 0.052 \rm{(stat)} \pm 0.061 \rm{(sys)}$ and our constraint for the redshift-space distortion parameter is $β= 0.289^{+0.044}_{-0.043} \rm{(stat)} \pm 0.049 \rm{(…
We investigate the feasibility of measuring the effects of peculiar velocities in large-scale structure using the dipole of the redshift-space cross-correlation function. We combine number counts of galaxies with brightness-temperature fluctuations from 21cm intensity mapping, demonstrating that the dipole may be measured at modest significance ($\lesssim 2σ$) by combining the upcoming radio survey CHIME with the future redshift surveys of DESI and Euclid. More significant measurements ($\lesssim~10σ$) will be possible by combining intensity maps from the SKA with these of DESI or Euclid, and …
We examine the impact of baryon-dark matter relative velocities on intergalactic small-scale structure and the 21 cm signal during reionization. Streaming velocities reduced clumping in the intergalactic medium (IGM) on mass scales of $\sim 10^4 - 10^8$ M$_{\odot}$. This effect produced a distinct baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the 21 cm power spectrum at wave numbers $k\sim 0.1$ h/Mpc, near which forthcoming surveys will be most sensitive. In contrast to the highly uncertain impact of streaming velocities on star formation, the effect on clumping is better constrained because it…
We derive the Edgeworth streaming model (ESM) for the redshift space correlation function starting from an arbitrary distribution function for biased tracers of dark matter by considering its two-point statistics and show that it reduces to the Gaussian streaming model (GSM) when neglecting non-Gaussianities. We test the accuracy of the GSM and ESM independent of perturbation theory using the Horizon Run 2 N-body halo catalog. While the monopole of the redshift space halo correlation function is well described by the GSM, higher multipoles improve upon including the leading order non-Gaussian …
We study the dynamical effect of relative velocities between dark matter and baryonic fluids, which remained supersonic after the epoch of recombination. The impact of this supersonic motion on the formation of cosmological structures was first formulated by Tseliakhovich & Hirata (2010), in terms of the linear theory of small-scale fluctuations coupled to large-scale, relative velocities in mean-density regions. In their formalism, they limited the large-scale density environment to be those of the global mean density. We improve on their formulation by allowing variation in the density envir…
We update the ingredients of the Gaussian streaming model (GSM) for the redshift-space clustering of biased tracers using the techniques of Lagrangian perturbation theory, effective field theory (EFT) and a generalized Lagrangian bias expansion. After relating the GSM to the cumulant expansion, we present new results for the real-space correlation function, mean pairwise velocity and pairwise velocity dispersion including counter terms from EFT and bias terms through third order in the linear density, its leading derivatives and its shear up to second order. We discuss the connection to the Ga…
We develop a model for the redshift-space correlation function, valid for both dark matter particles and halos on scales $>5\,h^{-1}$Mpc. In its simplest formulation, the model requires the knowledge of the first three moments of the line-of-sight pairwise velocity distribution plus two well-defined dimensionless parameters. The model is obtained by extending the Gaussian-Gaussianity prescription for the velocity distribution, developed in a previous paper, to a more general concept allowing for local skewness, which is required to match simulations. We compare the model with the well known Ga…
We study the accretion along streams from the cosmic web into high-redshift massive galaxies using three sets of AMR hydro-cosmological simulations. We find that the streams keep a roughly constant accretion rate as they penetrate into the halo centre. The mean accretion rate follows the mass and redshift dependence predicted for haloes by the EPS approximation, dM / dt is proportional to Mvir^{1.25} (1 + z)^{2.5}. The distribution of the accretion rates can well be described by a sum of two Gaussians, the primary corresponding to "smooth inflow" and the secondary to "mergers". The same functi…
In this review we summarize the effect of relative supersonic velocities between gas and dark matter created right after recombination on astrophysics and cosmology. The relative velocities formally introduce a second order effect on the standard results and thus have been neglected in the framework of linear theory. However, when properly considered, the velocities yield a non-perturbative contribution to the growth of structures which is then inherited by the majority of cosmic signals coming from redshifts above z ~ 10, and in certain cases may even propagate to various low-redshift observa…
We examine the redshifts of a comprehensive set of published Type Ia supernovae, and provide a combined, improved catalogue with updated redshifts. We improve on the original catalogues by using the most up-to-date heliocentric redshift data available; ensuring all redshifts have uncertainty estimates; using the exact formulae to convert heliocentric redshifts into the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) frame; and utilising an improved peculiar velocity model that calculates local motions in redshift-space and more realistically accounts for the external bulk flow at high-redshifts. In total we…
The peculiar velocity field offers a unique way to probe dark matter density field on large scales at low redshifts. In this work, we have compiled a new sample of 465 peculiar velocities from low redshift $(z < 0.067)$ Type Ia supernovae. We compare the reconstructed velocity field derived from the 2M++ galaxy redshift compilation to the supernovae, the SFI++ and the 2MTF Tully-Fisher distance catalogues. We used a forward method to jointly infer the distances and the velocities of distance indicators by comparing the observations to the reconstruction. Comparison of the reconstructed peculia…
The line-of-sight peculiar velocities of galaxies contribute to their observed redshifts, breaking the translational invariance of galaxy clustering down to a rotational invariance around the observer. This becomes important when the line-of-sight direction varies significantly across a survey, leading to what are known as `wide angle' effects in redshift space distortions. Wide-angle effects will also be present in measurements of the momentum field, i.e. the galaxy density-weighted velocity field, in upcoming peculiar velocity surveys. In this work we study how wide-angle effects modify the …
We show that peculiar velocities of Type Ia supernovae can be used to derive constraints on the sum of neutrino masses, $Σm_ν$, and dark energy equation of state, $w = w_0+w_a(1-a)$, from measurements of the magnitude-redshift relation, complementary to galaxy redshift and weak lensing surveys. Light from a supernova propagates through a perturbed Universe so the luminosity distance is modified from its homogeneous prediction. This modification is proportional to the matter density fluctuation and its time derivative due to gravitational lensing and peculiar velocity respectively. At low redsh…
We present near-IR spectroscopy of a sample of luminous (Lbol >10^14 Lsun), sub-millimeter-detected, dusty (M_dust~10^9 Msun), radio-quiet QSOs at z~2. We measure the redshift, width, and luminosity of the Halpha line, and the continuum luminosity near Ha. The Halpha emission line was strongly detected in all sources. Two components -- a very broad (>~5000 km/s) Gaussian and an intermediate-width (>~1500 km/s) Gaussian, were required to fit the Halpha profile of all observed QSOs. Narrow (<~1000 km/s) lines were not detected in the sample QSOs. Relative to the Halpha-derived QSO redshift, the …
We present an analysis of peculiar velocities and their effect on supernova cosmology. In particular, we study (a) the corrections due to our own motion, (b) the effects of correlations in peculiar velocities induced by large-scale structure, and (c) uncertainties arising from a possible local under- or over-density. For all of these effects we present a case study of their impact on the cosmology derived by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-II Supernova Survey (SDSS-II SN Survey). Correcting supernova redshifts for the CMB dipole slightly over-corrects nearby supernovae that share some of our loca…
In an isotropic and homogeneous Hubble expansion, all transverse motion is peculiar. Like the radial peculiar velocities of galaxies, transverse peculiar velocities are a means to trace the density of matter that does not rely on light tracing mass. Unlike radial peculiar velocity measurements that require precise redshift-independent distances in order to distinguish between the Hubble expansion and the observed redshift, transverse peculiar velocities can be measured using redshifts alone as a proxy for distance. Extragalactic proper motions can therefore directly measure peculiar velocities…
As a part of our galaxy-cluster redshift survey, we present a set of 80 new velocities in the 4 clusters Abell 376, Abell 970, Abell 1356, and Abell 2244, obtained at Haute-Provence observatory. This set now completes our previous analysis, especially for the first two clusters. Data on individual galaxies are presented, and we discuss some cluster properties. For A376, we obtained an improved mean redshift <z> = 0.047503$ with a velocity dispersion of σ_V = 860 km/s. For A970, we have <z> = 0.058747 with σ_V = 881 km/s. We show that the A1356 cluster is not a member of the "Leo-Virgo" supercl…
Reconstruction is becoming a crucial procedure of galaxy clustering analysis for future spectroscopic redshift surveys to obtain subpercent level measurement of the baryon acoustic oscillation scale. Most reconstruction algorithms rely on an estimation of the displacement field from the observed galaxy distribution. However, the displacement reconstruction degrades near the survey boundary due to incomplete data and the boundary effects extend to $\sim100\,\mathrm{Mpc}/h$ within the interior of the survey volume. We study the possibility of using radial velocities measured from the cosmic micr…
The redshifts of ~250000 galaxies are used to study the Local Hole and its associated peculiar velocities. The sample, compiled from 6dFGS and SDSS provides wide sky coverage to a depth of ~300h-1Mpc. We have therefore examined K and r limited galaxy redshift distributions and number counts to map the local density field. Comparing observed galaxy n(z) distributions to homogeneous models in three large regions of the high latitude sky, we find evidence for under-densities ranging from ~4-40% in these regions to depths of ~150h-1Mpc with the deepest under-density being over the Southern Galacti…
Several studies have shown the influence of the relative streaming velocity (SV) between baryons and dark matter on the formation of structures. For the first time, we constrain the local value of the SV in which the Milky Way was formed. We use the semi-analytical model A-SLOTH to simulate the formation of Milky Way-like galaxies. The high resolution in mass and time of the dark matter merger trees from the Caterpillar simulation enables to accurately model star formation in the smallest progenitor halos at high redshift. The efficient semi-analytical nature of A-SLOTH allows us to run many s…
We study the compression of information present in the correlated perturbations to the luminosity distance in the low-redshift ($z<0.1$) supernovae Ia due to peculiar velocities of these supernovae. We demonstrate that the naïve compression into angular velocity power spectrum does not work efficiently, due to thickness of the spherical shell over which the supernovae are measured. Instead, we show that measurements can be compressed into measurements of $f^2P(k)$, where $f$ is the logarithmic rate of growth of linear perturbations and $P(k)$ is their power spectrum. We develop an optimal quad…
We obtained ESI/Keck rotation curves of 10 MgII absorption selected galaxies (0.3 < z < 1.0) for which we have WFPC-2/HST images and high resolution HIRES/Keck and UVES/VLT quasar spectra of the MgII absorption profiles. We perform a kinematic comparison of these galaxies and their associated halo MgII absorption. For all 10 galaxies, the majority of the absorption velocities lie in the range of the observed galaxy rotation velocities. In 7/10 cases, the absorption velocities reside fully to one side of the galaxy systemic velocity and usually align with one arm of the rotation curve. In all c…
Peculiar motion introduces systematic variations in the observed luminosity distribution of galaxies. This allows one to constrain the cosmic peculiar velocity field from large galaxy redshift surveys. Using around half a million galaxies from the SDSS Data Release 7 at z ~ 0.1, we demonstrate the applicability of this approach to large datasets and obtain bounds on peculiar velocity moments and $σ_{8}$, the amplitude of the linear matter power spectrum. Our results are in good agreement with the $Λ$CDM model and consistent with the previously reported ~ 1% zero-point tilt in the SDSS photomet…
We present measurements of both scale- and time-dependent deviations from the standard gravitational field equations. These late-time modifications are introduced separately for relativistic and non-relativistic particles, by way of the parameters $G_{\rm matter}(k,z)$ and $G_{\rm light}(k,z)$ using two bins in both scale and time, with transition wavenumber $0.01$ Mpc$^{-1}$ and redshift 1. We emphasize the use of two dynamical probes to constrain this set of parameters, galaxy power spectrum multipoles and the direct peculiar velocity power spectrum, which probe fluctuations on different sca…
We study the scale and redshift dependence of the power spectra for density perturbations and peculiar velocities, and the evolution of a coarse grained phase space density for (WDM) particles that decoupled during the radiation dominated stage. The (WDM) corrections are obtained in a perturbative expansion valid in the range of redshifts at which N-body simulations set up initial conditions, and for a wide range of scales. The redshift dependence is determined by the kurtosis $β_2$ of the distribution function at decoupling. At large redshift there is an enhancement of peculiar velocities for…
To understand the nature of the accelerated expansion of the Universe, we need to combine constraints on the expansion rate and growth of structure. The growth rate is usually extracted from three dimensional galaxy maps by exploiting the effects of peculiar motions on galaxy clustering. However, theoretical models of the probability distribution function (PDF) of galaxy pairwise peculiar velocities are not accurate enough on small scales to reduce the error on theoretical predictions to the level required to match the precision expected for measurements from future surveys. Here, we improve t…
We consider the dispersion on the supernova distance-redshift relation due to peculiar velocities and gravitational lensing, and the sensitivity of these effects to the amplitude of the matter power spectrum. We use the MeMo lensing likelihood developed by Quartin, Marra & Amendola (2014), which accounts for the characteristic non-Gaussian distribution caused by lensing magnification with measurements of the first four central moments of the distribution of magnitudes. We build on the MeMo likelihood by including the effects of peculiar velocities directly into the model for the moments. In or…
We present updated constraints on the free-streaming of warm dark matter (WDM) particles derived from an analysis of the Lya flux power spectrum measured from high-resolution spectra of 25 z > 4 quasars obtained with the Keck High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) and the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) spectrograph. We utilize a new suite of high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations that explore WDM masses of 1, 2 and 4 keV (assuming the WDM consists of thermal relics), along with different physically motivated thermal histories. We carefully address different sources of system…
Peculiar velocity measurements are the only tool available in the low-redshift Universe for mapping the large-scale distribution of matter and can thus be used to constrain cosmology. Using redshifts from the 2M++ redshift compilation, we reconstruct the density of galaxies within 200 Mpc/h, allowing for the first time good sampling of important superclusters such as the Shapley Concentration. We compare the predicted peculiar velocities from 2M++ to Tully-Fisher and SNe peculiar velocities. We find a value of $β^* \equiv Ω_{\rm{m}}^{0.55}/b^* = 0.431 \pm 0.021$, suggesting $Ω_{\rm{m}}^{0.55}σ…
We present new measurements of the free-streaming of warm dark matter (WDM) from Lyman-$α$ flux-power spectra. We use data from the medium resolution, intermediate redshift XQ-100 sample observed with the X-shooter spectrograph ($z=3 - 4.2$) and the high-resolution, high-redshift sample used in Viel et al. (2013) obtained with the HIRES/MIKE spectrographs ($z=4.2 - 5.4$). Based on further improved modelling of the dependence of the Lyman-$α$ flux-power spectrum on the free-streaming of dark matter, cosmological parameters, as well as the thermal history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) with h…
We use the Millennium simulation to probe the correlation between cluster velocities and their shapes and the consequences for measurements of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) effect. Halos are generally prolate ellipsoids with orientations that are correlated with those of nearby halos. We measure the mean streaming velocities of halos along the lines that separate them, demonstrating that the peculiar velocities and the long axes of halos tend to be somewhat aligned, especially for the most massive halos. Since the kSZ effect is proportional to the line-of-sight velocity and the optical d…
Peculiar velocities of objects in the nearby universe are correlated due to the gravitational pull of large-scale structure. By measuring these velocities, we have a unique opportunity to test the cosmological model at the lowest redshifts. We perform this test, using current data to constrain the amplitude of the "signal" covariance matrix describing the velocities and their correlations. We consider a new, well-calibrated "Supercal" set of low-redshift SNe Ia as well as a set of distances derived from the fundamental plane relation of 6dFGS galaxies. Analyzing the SN and galaxy data separate…
