To understand the nature of the accelerated expansion of the Universe, we need to combine constraints on the expansion rate and growth of structure. The growth rate is usually extracted from three dimensional galaxy maps by exploiting the effects of peculiar motions on galaxy clustering. However, theoretical models of the probability distribution function (PDF) of galaxy pairwise peculiar velocities are not accurate enough on small scales to reduce the error on theoretical predictions to the level required to match the precision expected for measurements from future surveys. Here, we improve the modelling of the pairwise velocity distribution by using the Skew-T PDF, which has nonzero skewness and kurtosis. Our model accurately reproduces the redshift-space multipoles (monopole, quadrupole and hexadecapole) predicted by N-body simulations, above scales of about $10\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. We illustrate how a Taylor expansion of the streaming model can reveal the contributions of the different moments to the clustering multipoles, which are independent of the shape of the velocity PDF. The Taylor expansion explains why the Gaussian streaming model works well in predicting the first two redshift-space multipoles, although the velocity PDF is non-Gaussian even on large scales. Indeed, any PDF with the correct first two moments would produce precise results for the monopole down to scales of about $10\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$, and for the quadrupole down to about $30\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. An accurate model for the hexadecapole needs to include higher-order moments.
We show that linear redshift distortions in the galaxy distribution can affect the ISW galaxy-temperature signal, when the galaxy selection function is derived from a redshift survey. We find this effect adds power to the ISW signal at all redshifts and is larger at higher redshifts. Omission of this effect leads to an overestimation of the dark energy density $Ω_Λ$ as well as an underestimation of statistical errors. We find a new expression for the ISW Limber equation which includes redshift distortions, though we find that Limber equations for the ISW calculation are ill-suited for tomograp…
Redshift space distortions in galaxy clustering offer a promising technique for probing the growth rate of structure and testing dark energy properties and gravity. We consider the issue of to what accuracy they need to be modeled in order not to unduly bias cosmological conclusions. Fitting for nonlinear and redshift space corrections to the linear theory real space density power spectrum in bins in wavemode, we analyze both the effect of marginalizing over these corrections and of the bias due to not correcting them fully. While naively subpercent accuracy is required to avoid bias in the fi…
We compute a general expression for the contribution of vector perturbations to the redshift-space distortion of galaxy surveys. We show that they contribute to the same multipoles of the correlation function as scalar perturbations and should thus in principle be taken into account in data analysis. We derive constraints for next-generation surveys on the amplitude of two sources of vector perturbations, namely non-linear clustering and topological defects. While topological defects leave a very small imprint on redshift-space distortions, we show that the multipoles of the correlation functi…
We investigate the direct determination of expansion history using redshift distortions without plugging into detailed cosmological parameters. The observed spectra in redshift space include a mixture of information: fluctuations of density-density and velocity-velocity spectra, and distance measures of perpendicular and parallel components to the line of sight. Unfortunately it is hard to measure all the components simultaneously without any specific prior assumption. Common prior assumptions include a linear/quasi-linear model of redshift distortions or a model for the shape of the power spe…
We apply nonlinear reconstruction to the dark matter density field in redshift space and solve for the nonlinear mapping from the initial Lagrangian position to the final redshift space position. The reconstructed anisotropic field inferred from the nonlinear displacement correlates with the linear initial conditions to much smaller scales than the redshift space density field. The number of linear modes in the density field is improved by a factor of 30-40 after reconstruction. We thus expect this reconstruction approach to substantially expand the cosmological information including baryon ac…
The low statistical errors on cosmological parameters promised by future galaxy surveys will only be realised with the development of new, fast, analysis methods that reduce potential systematic problems to low levels. We present an efficient method for measuring the evolution of the growth of structure using Redshift Space Distortions (RSD), that removes the need to make measurements in redshift shells. We provide sets of galaxy-weights that cover a wide range in redshift, but are optimised to provide differential information about cosmological evolution. These are derived to optimally measur…
The standard nonlinear perturbation theory of the gravitational instability is extended to incorporate the nonlocal bias, redshift-space distortions, and primordial non-Gaussianity. We show that local Eulerian bias is not generally compatible to local Lagrangian bias in nonlinear regime. The Eulerian and Lagrangian biases are nonlocally related order by order in the general perturbation theory. The relation between Eulerian and Lagrangian kernels of density perturbations with biasing are derived. The effects of primordial non-Gaussianity and redshift-space distortions are also incorporated in …
Modified gravity and massive neutrino cosmologies are two of the most interesting scenarios that have been recently explored to account for possible observational deviations from the concordance $Λ$-cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) model. In this context, we investigated the large-scale structure of the Universe by exploiting the \dustp simulations that implement, simultaneously, the effects of $f(R)$ gravity and massive neutrinos. To study the possibility of breaking the degeneracy between these two effects, we analysed the redshift-space distortions in the clustering of dark matter haloes at differ…
Both multi-streaming (random motion) and bulk motion cause the Finger-of-God (FoG) effect in redshift space distortion (RSD). We apply a direct measurement of the multi-streaming effect in RSD from simulations, proving that it induces an additional, non-negligible FoG damping to the redshift space density power spectrum. We show that, including the multi-streaming effect, the RSD modelling is significantly improved. We also provide a theoretical explanation based on halo model for the measured effect, including a fitting formula with one to two free parameters. The improved understanding of Fo…
Peculiar-velocity surveys of the low-redshift universe have significant leverage to constrain the growth rate of cosmic structure and test gravity. Wide-field imaging surveys combined with multi-object spectrographs (e.g. ZTF2, LSST, DESI, 4MOST) can use Type Ia supernovae as informative tracers of the velocity field, reaching few percent constraints on the growth rate $fσ_8$ at $z\lesssim0.2$ where density tracers cannot do better than $\sim10\%$. Combining the high-redshift DESI survey mapping redshift space distortions with a low-redshift supernova peculiar velocity survey using LSST and DE…
The anisotropy of clustering in redshift space provides a direct measure of the growth rate of large scale structure in the Universe. Future galaxy redshift surveys will make high precision measurements of these distortions, and will potentially allow us to distinguish between different scenarios for the accelerating expansion of the Universe. Accurate predictions are needed in order to distinguish between competing cosmological models. We study the distortions in the redshift space power spectrum in $Λ$CDM and quintessence dark energy models, using large volume N-body simulations, and test pr…
We present a new model for the cross-covariance between galaxy redshift-space distortions and peculiar velocities. We combine this with the auto-covariance models of both probes in a fully self-consistent, maximum-likelihood method, allowing us to extract enhanced cosmological parameter constraints. When applying our method to the 6-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS), our constraint on the growth rate of structure is $fσ_8 = 0.384 \pm 0.052 \rm{(stat)} \pm 0.061 \rm{(sys)}$ and our constraint for the redshift-space distortion parameter is $β= 0.289^{+0.044}_{-0.043} \rm{(stat)} \pm 0.049 \rm{(…
The growth rate of large scale structure can probe whether dark matter clusters at gravitational strength or deviates from this, e.g. due to self interactions. Measurement of the growth rate through redshift space distortions in galaxy redshift surveys constrains the clustering strength, and its redshift dependence. We compare such effects on growth to those from high redshift deviations (e.g. early dark energy) or modified gravity, and give a simple, highly accurate analytic prescription. Current observations can constrain the dark matter clustering strength to F_{cl}=0.99\pm0.02 of standard,…
Redshift space distortions caused by galaxy peculiar velocities provide a window onto the growth rate of large scale structure and a method for testing general relativity. We investigate through a comparison of N-body simulations to various extensions of perturbation theory beyond the linear regime, the robustness of cosmological parameter extraction, including the gravitational growth index, γ. We find that the Kaiser formula and some perturbation theory approaches bias the growth rate by 1-sigma or more relative to the fiducial at scales as large as k > 0.07 h/Mpc. This bias propagates to es…
In this paper, we fully investigate cosmological scenarios in which dark matter is non-minimally coupled to an extra scalar degree of freedom. The interaction is realized by means of conformal and disformal terms in the transformed gravitational metric. Considering linear perturbation theory, we show that the growth rate of dark matter differs from the uncoupled case and that the well-known Kaiser formula undergoes modification. As a result, redshift space distortion measurements cease to be a direct probe of the linear growth rate of total matter, since the distortion factor has an extra, cou…
We perform a meta-study of recently published Redshift Space Distortion (RSD) measurements of the cosmological growth rate, f(z) σ_8(z). We analyse the latest results from the 6dFGS, BOSS, LRG, WiggleZ and VIPERS galaxy redshift surveys, and compare the measurements to expectations from Planck. In this Letter we point out that the RSD measurements are consistently lower than the values expected from Planck, and the relative scatter between the RSD measurements is lower than expected. A full resolution of this issue may require a more robust treatment of non-linear effects in RSD models, althou…
The anisotropy of the redshift space bispectrum contains a wealth of cosmological information. This anisotropy depends on the orientation of three vectors ${\bf k_1,k_2,k_3}$ with respect to the line of sight. Here we have decomposed the redshift space bispectrum in spherical harmonics which completely quantify this anisotropy. To illustrate this we consider linear redshift space distortion of the bispectrum arising from primordial non-Gaussianity. In the plane parallel approximation only the first four even $\ell$ multipoles have non-zero values, and we present explicit analytical expressions…
The highly redshifted 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen has become recognized as a unique probe of cosmology from relatively low redshifts (z ~ 1) up through the Epoch of Reionization (z ~ 8) and even beyond. To date, most work has focused on recovering the spherically averaged power spectrum of the 21 cm signal, since this approach maximizes the signal-to-noise in the initial measurement. However, like galaxy surveys, the 21 cm signal is affected by redshift space distortions, and is inherently anisotropic between the line-of-sight and transverse directions. A measurement of this anisotropy can …
We measure the growth rate and its evolution using the anisotropic clustering of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) Data Release 14 (DR14) quasar sample, which includes $148\,659$ quasars covering the wide redshift range of $0.8 < z < 2.2$ and a sky area of $2112.90$ $\rm deg^2$. To optimise measurements we deploy a redshift-dependent weighting scheme, which allows us to avoid binning, and perform the data analysis consistently including the redshift evolution across the sample. We perform the analysis in Fourier space, and use the redshift evolving power spectrum mul…
Redshift-space distortions (RSD) in galaxy redshift surveys generally break both the isotropy and homogeneity of galaxy distribution. While the former aspect is particularly highlighted as a probe of growth of structure induced by gravity, the latter aspect, often quoted as wide-angle RSD but ignored in most of the cases, will become important and critical to account for as increasing the statistical precision in next-generation surveys. However, the impact of wide-angle RSD has been mostly studied using linear perturbation theory. In this paper, employing the Zel'dovich approximation, i.e., f…
We present a Bayesian reconstruction method which maps a galaxy distribution from redshift-space to real-space inferring the distances of the individual galaxies. The method is based on sampling density fields assuming a lognormal prior with a likelihood given by the negative binomial distribution function modelling stochastic bias. We assume a deterministic bias given by a power law relating the dark matter density field to the expected halo or galaxy field. Coherent redshift-space distortions are corrected in a Gibbs-sampling procedure by moving the galaxies from redshift-space to real-space…
Using multiple tracers of large-scale structure allows to evade the limitations imposed by sampling variance for some parameters of interest in cosmology. We demonstrate the optimal way of carrying out a multitracer analysis in a galaxy redshift survey by considering the principal components of the shot noise matrix from two-point clustering statistics. We show how to construct two tracers that maximize the benefits of sampling variance and shot noise cancellation using optimal weights. On the basis of high-resolution N-body simulations of dark matter halos we apply this technique to the analy…
We apply the Lagrangian perturbation theory with time-dependent growth functions at second and third order of perturbation with the aim to model the effect of dynamical dark energy on redshift-space distortions. Our fiducial galaxy redshift surveys are modeled after the upcoming SKA and DESI redshift surveys. We include PLANCK CMB priors and the 20\% uncertainty on the linear bias parameter, incorporating the unknown instrumentation noise. After the marginalizing, our results show that the constraints on the density parameter could potentially get better than $\sim$1\%, while the constraints o…
One of the most promising ways to study the epoch of reionization (EoR) is through radio observations of the redshifted 21-cm line emission from neutral hydrogen. These observations are complicated by the fact that the mapping of redshifts to line-of-sight positions is distorted by the peculiar velocities of the gas. Such distortions can be a source of error if they are not properly understood, but they also encode information about cosmology and astrophysics. We study the effects of redshift space distortions on the power spectrum of 21-cm radiation from the EoR using large scale $N$-body and…
The zeroth-order component of the cosine expansion of the projected three-point correlation function is proposed for clustering analysis of cosmic large scale structure. These functions are third order statistics but can be measured similarly to the projected two-point correlations. Numerical experiments with N-body simulations indicate that the advocated statistics are redshift distortion free within 10% in the non-linear regime on scales ~0.2-10Mpc/h. Halo model prediction of the zeroth-order component of the projected three-point correlation function agrees with simulations within ~10%. Thi…
Anisotropies in distortions to the frequency spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) can be created through spatially varying heating processes in the early Universe. For instance, the dissipation of small-scale acoustic modes does create distortion anisotropies, in particular for non-Gaussian primordial perturbations. In this work, we derive approximations that allow describing the associated distortion field. We provide a systematic formulation of the problem using Fourier-space window functions, clarifying and generalizing previous approximations. Our expressions highlight the fac…
We apply the Minkowski tensor statistics to three dimensional Gaussian random fields. Minkowski tensors contain information regarding the orientation and shape of excursion sets, that is not present in the scalar Minkowski functionals. They can be used to quantify globally preferred directions, and additionally provide information on the mean shape of subsets of a field. This makes them ideal statistics to measure the anisotropic signal generated by redshift space distortion in the low redshift matter density field. We review the definition of the Minkowski tensor statistics in three dimension…
Redshift-space distortions are a sensitive probe of the growth of large-scale structure. In the linear regime, redshift-space distortions are fully described by the multipoles of the two-point correlation function. In the nonlinear regime, however, higher-order statistics are needed to capture the full information of the galaxy density field. In this paper, we show that the redshift-space line correlation function--which is a measure of Fourier phase correlations--is sensitive to the nonlinear growth of the density and velocity fields and to the nonlinear mapping between real and redshift spac…
We study the effect of large-scale tidal fields on internal halo properties using a set of N-body simulations. We measure significant cross-correlations between large-scale tidal fields and several non-scalar halo properties: shapes, velocity dispersion, and angular momentum. Selection effects that couple to these non-scalar halo properties can produce anisotropic clustering even in real-space. We investigate the size of this effect and show that it can produce a non-zero quadrupole similar in size to the one generated by linear redshift-space distortions (RSD). Finally, we investigate the clu…
Using a full implementation of resummed perturbation theory (PT) from a multi-point propagator expansion, we put forward new theoretical predictions for the two-point statistics of matter fluctuations in redshift space. The predictions consistently include PT corrections up to the two-loop order and are based on an improved prescription of the redshift-space distortions (RSD) that properly takes into account their non-Gaussian impact from a systematic low-k expansion. In contrast to the previous studies that partly used standard PT calculations, the present treatment is able to provide a consi…
Although redshift-space distortions only affect inferred distances and not angles, they still distort the projected angular clustering of galaxy samples selected using redshift dependent quantities. From an Eulerian view-point, this effect is caused by the apparent movement of galaxies into or out of the sample. From a Lagrangian view-point, we find that projecting the redshift-space overdensity field over a finite radial distance does not remove all the anisotropic distortions. We investigate this effect, showing that it strongly boosts the amplitude of clustering for narrow samples and can a…
We investigate the effect of orientation-dependent selection effects on galaxy clustering in redshift space. It is found that if galaxies are aligned by large-scale tidal fields, then these selection effects give rise to a dependence of the observed galaxy density on the local tidal field, in addition to the well-known dependences on the matter density and radial velocity gradient. This alters the galaxy power spectrum in a way that is different for Fourier modes parallel to and perpendicular to the line of sight. These tidal galaxy alignments can thus mimic redshift space distortions, and thu…
We develop an optimized technique to extract density--density and velocity--velocity spectra out of observed spectra in redshift space. The measured spectra of the distribution of halos from redshift distorted mock map are binned into 2--dimensional coordinates in Fourier space so as to be decomposed into both spectra using angular projection dependence. With the threshold limit introduced to minimize nonlinear suppression, the decomposed velocity--velocity spectra are reasonably well measured up to scale k=0.07 h/Mpc, and the measured variances using our method are consistent with errors pred…
Understanding a behavior of galaxy biasing is crucial for future galaxy redshift surveys. One aim is to measure the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) within the precision of a few percent level. Using 30 large cosmological N-body simulations for a standard LCDM cosmology, we study the halo biasing over a wide redshift range. We compare the simulation results with theoretical predictions proposed by Matsubara (2008) which naturally incorporate the halo bias and redshift-space distortions into their formalism of perturbation theory with a resummation technique via the Lagrangian picture. The p…
Observations of redshift-space distortions in spectroscopic galaxy surveys offer an attractive method for observing the build-up of cosmological structure, which depends both on the expansion rate of the Universe and our theory of gravity. In preparation for analysis of redshift-space distortions from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) final data release we compare a number of analytic and phenomenological `streaming' models, specified in configuration space, to mock catalogs derived in different ways from several N-body simulations. The galaxies in each mock catalog have prope…
Redshift-space distortions are generally considered in the plane parallel limit, where the angular separation between the two sources can be neglected. Given that galaxy catalogues now cover large fractions of the sky, it becomes necessary to consider them in a formalism which takes into account the wide angle separations. In this article we derive an operational formula for the matter correlators in the Newtonian limit to be used in actual data sets, both in configuration and in Fourier spaces without relying on a plane-parallel approximation. We then recover the plane-parallel limit not only…
We investigate the impact of different observational effects affecting a precise and accurate measurement of the growth rate of fluctuations from the anisotropy of clustering in galaxy redshift surveys. We focus on redshift measurement errors, on the reconstruction of the underlying real-space clustering and on the apparent degeneracy existing with the geometrical distortions induced by the cosmology-dependent conversion of redshifts into distances. We use a suite of mock catalogues extracted from large N-body simulations, focusing on the analysis of intermediate, mildly non-linear scales and …
We present a method to extract the redshift-space distortions beta parameter in configuration space with a minimal set of cosmological assumptions. We show that a novel combination of the observed monopole and quadrupole correlation functions can remove efficiently the impact of mild non linearities and redshift errors. The method offers a series of convenient properties: it does not depend on the theoretical linear correlation function, the mean galaxy density is irrelevant, only convolutions are used, there is no explicit dependence on linear bias. Analyses based on dark matter N-body simula…
Numerical simulations show that redshift space distortions (RSD) introduce strong scale dependence in the power spectra of halos, with ten percent deviations relative to linear theory predictions even on relatively large scales (k<0.1h/Mpc) and even in the absence of satellites (which induce Fingers-of-God, FoG, effects). If unmodeled these effects prevent one from extracting cosmological information from RSD surveys. In this paper we use perturbation theory (PT) and halo biasing model and apply it to the distribution function approach to RSD, in which RSD is decomposed into several correlator…
Although the large-scale perturbations beyond a finite-volume survey region are not direct observables, these affect measurements of clustering statistics of small-scale (sub-survey) perturbations in the large-scale structure, compared with the ensemble average, via the mode-coupling effect. In this paper we show that the large-scale tides induced by scalar perturbations cause apparent anisotropic distortions in the redshift-space power spectrum of galaxies in a way depending on an alignment between the tides, the wavevector of small-scale modes and the line-of-sight direction. Using the pertu…
In the near future, cosmology will enter the wide and deep galaxy survey area allowing high-precision studies of the large scale structure of the universe in three dimensions. To test cosmological models and determine their parameters accurately, it is natural to confront data with exact theoretical expectations expressed in the observational parameter space (angles and redshift). The data-driven galaxy number count fluctuations on redshift shells, can be used to build correlation functions $C(θ; z_1, z_2)$ on and between shells which can probe the baryonic acoustic oscillations, the distance-…
Using the redshift-space distortions of void-galaxy cross-correlation function we analyse the dynamics of voids embedded in different environments. We compute the void-galaxy cross-correlation function in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in terms of distances taken along the line of sight and projected into the sky. We analyse the distortions on the cross-correlation isodensity levels and we find anisotropic isocontours consistent with expansion for large voids with smoothly rising density profiles and collapse for small voids with overdense shells surrounding them. Based on the linear appr…
The pairwise velocity generating function $G$ has deep connection with both the pairwise velocity probability distribution function and modeling of redshift space distortion (RSD). Its implementation into RSD modeling is often faciliated by expansion into series of pairwise velocity moments $\langle v_{12}^n\rangle$. Motivated by the logrithmic transformation of the cosmic density field, we investigate an alternative expansion into series of pairwise velocity cumulants $\langle v_{12}^n\rangle_c$ . We numerically evaluate the convergence rate of the two expansions, with three $3072^3$ particle…
We use a range of cosmological data to constrain phenomenological modifications to general relativity on cosmological scales, through modifications to the Poisson and lensing equations. We include cosmic microwave background anisotropy measurements from the Planck satellite, cosmic shear from CFHTLenS and DES-SV, and redshift-space distortions from BOSS data release 12 and the 6dF galaxy survey. We find no evidence of departures from general relativity, with the modified gravity parameters constrained to $Σ_0 = 0.05^{+0.05}_{-0.07}$ and $μ_0 = -0.10^{+0.20}_{-0.16}$, where $Σ_0$ and $μ_0$ refe…
We present in this paper the general real- and redshift-space clustering properties of galaxies as measured in the first data release of the VIPERS survey. VIPERS is a large redshift survey designed to probe the distant Universe and its large-scale structure at 0.5 < z < 1.2. We describe in this analysis the global properties of the sample and discuss the survey completeness and associated corrections. This sample allows us to measure the galaxy clustering with an unprecedented accuracy at these redshifts. From the redshift-space distortions observed in the galaxy clustering pattern we provide…
We measure the scale dependence and redshift dependence of 21 cm line emitted from the neutral hydrogen gas at redshift 1<z<5 using full cosmological hydrodynamic simulations by taking the ratios between the power spectra of HI-dark matter cross correlation and dark matter auto-correlation. The neutral hydrogen distribution is computed in full cosmological hydrodynamic simulations including star formation and supernova feedback under a uniform ultra-violet background radiation. We find a significant scale dependence of HI bias at z>3 on scales of k>1h/Mpc, but it is roughly constant at lower r…
Observations of galaxy clustering are made in redshift space, which results in distortions to the underlying isotropic distribution of galaxies. These redshift-space distortions (RSD) not only degrade important features of the matter density field, such as the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) peaks, but also pose challenges for the theoretical modelling of observational probes. Here we introduce an iterative nonlinear reconstruction algorithm to remove RSD effects from galaxy clustering measurements, and assess its performance by using mock galaxy catalogues. The new method is found to be a…
The gravitational coupling between large- and small-scale density perturbations leads to anisotropic distortions to the local small-scale matter fluctuations. Such local anisotropic distortions can be used to reconstruct the large-scale matter distribution, known as tidal reconstruction. In this paper, we apply the tidal reconstruction methods to simulated galaxies in redshift space. We find that redshift-space distortions lead to anisotropic reconstruction results. While the reconstructed radial modes are more noisy mainly due to the small-scale velocity dispersion, the transverse modes are s…
Future high spectroscopic resolution galaxy surveys will observe galaxies with nearly full-sky footprints. Modeling the galaxy clustering for these surveys, therefore, must include the wide-angle effect with narrow redshift binning. In particular, when the redshift-bin size is comparable to the typical peculiar velocity field, the nonlinear redshift-space distortion (RSD) effect becomes important. A naive projection of the Fourier-space RSD model to spherical harmonic space leads to diverging expressions. In this paper we present a general formalism of projecting the higher-order RSD terms int…
We develop a cosmological parameter estimation code for (tomographic) angular power spectra analyses of galaxy number counts, for which we include, for the first time, redshift-space distortions (RSD) in the Limber approximation. This allows for a speed-up in computation time, and we emphasise that only angular scales where the Limber approximation is valid are included in our analysis. Our main result shows that a correct modelling of RSD is crucial not to bias cosmological parameter estimation. This happens not only for spectroscopy-detected galaxies, but even in the case of galaxy surveys w…
We investigate the spatial properties of the large scale structure (LSS) of the Universe in the framework of coupled dark energy (cDE) cosmologies. Using the public halo catalogues from the CoDECS simulations -- the largest set of N-body experiments to date for such cosmological scenarios -- we estimate the clustering and bias functions of cold dark matter (CDM) haloes, both in real- and redshift-space. Moreover, we investigate the effects of the dark energy (DE) coupling on the geometric and dynamic redshift-space distortions, quantifying the difference with respect to the concordance LambdaC…
We outline how redshift-space distortions (RSD) can be measured from the angular correlation function w(θ), of galaxies selected from photometric surveys. The natural degeneracy between RSD and galaxy bias can be minimized by comparing results from bins with top-hat galaxy selection in redshift, and bins based on the radial position of galaxy pair centres. This comparison can also be used to test the accuracy of the photometric redshifts. The presence of RSD will be clearly detectable with the next generation of photometric redshift surveys. We show that the Dark Energy Survey (DES) will be ab…
Cosmic voids found in galaxy surveys are defined based on the galaxy distribution in redshift space. We show that the large scale distribution of voids in redshift space traces the fluctuations in the dark matter density field δ(k) (in Fourier space with μbeing the line of sight projected k-vector): δ_v^s(k) = (1 + β_v μ^2) b^s_v δ(k), with a beta factor that will be in general different than the one describing the distribution of galaxies. Only in case voids could be assumed to be quasi-local transformations of the linear (Gaussian) galaxy redshift space field, one gets equal beta factors β_v…
Redshift space distortions of the matter density power spectrum carry information on the growth rate of cosmic structure but require accurate modeling of nonlinear and velocity effects on the density field. We test and advance the reconstruction function of Kwan, Lewis, Linder (2012) in several ways. First, we compare to the distribution function perturbative approach of Seljak & McDonald (2012), deriving the mapping between them and showing how the KLL form can extend the validity of the latter. Second, using cosmological simulations rather than perturbation theory we calibrate the free funct…
We explore and compare different ways large-scale structure observables in redshift-space and real space can be connected. These include direct computation in Lagrangian space, moment expansions and two formulations of the streaming model. We derive for the first time a Fourier space version of the streaming model, which yields an algebraic relation between the real- and redshift-space power spectra which can be compared to earlier, phenomenological models. By considering the redshift-space 2-point function in both configuration and Fourier space, we show how to generalize the Gaussian streami…
The observed number counts of high-redshift galaxy candidates have been used to build up a statistical description of star-forming activity at redshift z >~ 7, when galaxies reionized the Universe. Standard models predict that a high incidence of gravitational lensing will probably distort measurements of flux and number of these earliest galaxies. The raw probability of this happening has been estimated to be ~ 0.5 percent, but can be larger owing to observational biases. Here we report that gravitational lensing is likely to dominate the observed properties of galaxies with redshifts of z >~…
We develop a model for the redshift-space correlation function, valid for both dark matter particles and halos on scales $>5\,h^{-1}$Mpc. In its simplest formulation, the model requires the knowledge of the first three moments of the line-of-sight pairwise velocity distribution plus two well-defined dimensionless parameters. The model is obtained by extending the Gaussian-Gaussianity prescription for the velocity distribution, developed in a previous paper, to a more general concept allowing for local skewness, which is required to match simulations. We compare the model with the well known Ga…
