We examine the impact of baryon-dark matter relative velocities on intergalactic small-scale structure and the 21 cm signal during reionization. Streaming velocities reduced clumping in the intergalactic medium (IGM) on mass scales of $\sim 10^4 - 10^8$ M$_{\odot}$. This effect produced a distinct baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the 21 cm power spectrum at wave numbers $k\sim 0.1$ h/Mpc, near which forthcoming surveys will be most sensitive. In contrast to the highly uncertain impact of streaming velocities on star formation, the effect on clumping is better constrained because it is set mainly by cosmology and straightforward gas dynamics. We quantify the latter using coupled radiation-hydrodynamic simulations that capture the Jeans scale of pre-reionization gas. The clumping factor of ionized gas is reduced by 5-10\% in regions with RMS streaming velocities. The suppression peaks $\approx 5$ Myr after a region is reionized, but disappears within 200 Myr due to pressure smoothing. We model the corresponding impact on the 21 cm signal and find that the BAO feature is most likely to appear at $\approx$ 10 \% ionization. During this phase, the feature may appear at the 1 \% (5 \%) level at $k \sim 0.1 (0.06)$ h/Mpc with an amplitude that varies by a factor of $< 10$ across a range of reionization histories. We also provide a model for the signal originating from streaming velocity's impact on ionizing sources, which can vary by 4 orders of magnitude depending on highly uncertain source properties. We find that the clumping signal probably dominates the source one unless Population III star formation in $10^6 - 10^8$ M$_{\odot}$ halos contributed significantly to the first 10\% of reionization.
The relative velocity between baryons and dark matter in the early Universe can suppress the formation of small-scale baryonic structure and leave an imprint on the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale at low redshifts after reionization. This "streaming velocity" affects the post-reionization gas distribution by directly reducing the abundance of pre-existing mini-halos ($\lesssim 10^7 M_{\bigodot}$) that could be destroyed by reionization and indirectly modulating reionization history via photoionization within these mini-halos. In this work, we investigate the effect of streaming velocit…
It has been suggested by Chen and Lai that the proper description of the large scale structure formation of the universe in the post-reionization era, which is conventionally characterized via gas hydrodynamics, should include the plasma collective effects in the formulation. Specifically, it is the combined pressure from the baryon thermal motions and the residual long-range electrostatic potentials resulted from the imperfect Debye shielding, that fights against the gravitational collapse. As a result, at small-scales the baryons would oscillate at the ion-acoustic, instead of the convention…
Baryons both increase halo concentration through adiabatic contraction and expel mass through feedback processes. However, it is not well understood how the radiation fields prevalent during the epoch of reionization affect the evolution of concentration in dark matter halos. We investigate how baryonic physics during the epoch of reionization modify the structure of dark matter halos in the Cosmic Reionization On Computers (CROC) simulations. We use two different measures of halo concentration to quantify the effects. We compare concentrations of halos matched between full physics simulations…
We propose a new way of looking at the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations in the Large Scale Structure clustering correlation function. We identify a scale s_LP that has two fundamental features: its position is insensitive to non-linear gravity, redshift space distortions, and scale-dependent bias at the 0.5% level; it is geometrical, i.e. independent of the power spectrum of the primordial density fluctuation parameters. These two properties together make s_LP, called the "linear point", an excellent cosmological standard ruler. The linear point is also appealing because it is easily identified ir…
At cosmic recombination, there was supersonic relative motion between baryons and dark matter, which originated from the baryonic acoustic oscillations in the early universe. This motion has been considered to have a negligible impact on the late stage of cosmic reionization because the relative velocity quickly decreases. However, recent studies have suggested that the recombination in gas clouds smaller than the local Jeans mass ($\lesssim$ $10^8~M_\odot$) can affect the reionization history by boosting the number of ultraviolet photons required for ionizing the intergalactic medium. Motivat…
We present predictions for the 21 cm brightness temperature power spectrum during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). We discuss the implications of the "light cone" effect, which incorporates evolution of the neutral hydrogen fraction and 21 cm brightness temperature along the line of sight. Using a novel method calibrated against radiation-hydrodynamic simulations, we model the neutral hydrogen density field and 21 cm signal in large volumes ($L = 2$ Gpc/$h$). The inclusion of the light cone effect leads to a relative decrease of about 50% in the 21 cm power spectrum on all scales. We also find…
It has recently been shown that supersonic relative velocities between dark matter and baryonic matter can have a significant effect on formation of the first structures in the universe. If this effect is still non-negligible during the epoch of hydrogen reionization, it generates large-scale anisotropy in the free electron density, which gives rise to a CMB B-mode. We compute the B-mode power spectrum and find a characteristic shape with acoustic peaks at l ~ 200, 400, ... The amplitude of this signal is a free parameter which is related to the dependence of the ionization fraction on the rel…
Interferometry of the cosmic 21-cm signal is set to revolutionize our understanding of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), eventually providing 3D maps of the early Universe. Initial detections however will be low signal-to-noise, limited by systematics. To confirm a putative 21-cm detection, and check the accuracy of 21-cm data analysis pipelines, it would be very useful to cross-correlate against a genuine cosmological signal. The most promising cosmological signals are wide-field maps of Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs), expected from the Subaru Hyper-Suprime Cam (HSC) Ultra-Deep field. He…
In this work we investigate the possibility of constraining a thawing Quintessence scalar field model for dark energy. We propose using the imprint of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) on the cross-correlation of post-reionization 21-cm signal and galaxy weak lensing convergence field to tomographically measure the angular diameter distance $D_A(z)$ and the Hubble parameter $H(z)$. The projected errors in these quantities are then used to constrain the Quintessence model parameters. We find that independent $600$hrs radio interferometric observation at four observing frequencies $916 $MHz, $65…
The baryon-acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the Lyman-$α$ forest is one of the key probes of the cosmic expansion rate at redshifts z~2.5, well before dark energy is believed to have become dynamically significant. A key advantage of the BAO as a standard ruler is that it is a sharp feature and hence is more robust against broadband systematic effects than other cosmological probes. However, if the Lyman-$α$ forest transmission is sensitive to the initial streaming velocity of the baryons relative to the dark matter, then the BAO peak position can be shifted. Here we investigate this sens…
Observations of the neutral Hydrogen (\HI ) 21-cm signal hold the potential of allowing us to map out the cosmological large scale structures (LSS) across the entire post-reionization era ($z \leq 6$). Several experiments are planned to map the LSS over a large range of redshifts and angular scales, many of these targeting the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations. It is important to model the \HI distribution in order to correctly predict the expected signal, and more so to correctly interpret the results after the signal is detected. In this paper we have carried out semi-numerical simulations to mod…
Detecting neutral Hydrogen (H\,{\sc i}) via the 21~cm line emission from the intergalactic medium at $z\gtrsim 6$ has been identified as one of the most promising probes of the epoch of cosmic reionization -- a major phase transition of the Universe. However, these studies face severe challenges imposed by the bright foreground emission from cosmic objects. Current techniques require precise instrumental calibration to separate the weak H\,{\sc i} line signal from the foreground continuum emission. We propose to mitigate this calibration requirement by using measurements of the interferometric…
We present a set of ultra-large particle-mesh simulations of the LyA forest targeted at understanding the imprint of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the inter-galactic medium. We use 9 dark matter only simulations which can, for the first time, simultaneously resolve the Jeans scale of the intergalactic gas while covering the large volumes required to adequately sample the acoustic feature. Mock absorption spectra are generated using the fluctuating Gunn-Peterson approximation which have approximately correct flux probability density functions (PDFs) and small-scale power spectra. On lar…
Reionization, the only phase transition in the Universe since recombination, is a key event in the cosmic history of baryonic matter. We derive, in the context of the large-scale bias expansion, the imprints of the epoch of reionization in the large-scale distribution of galaxies, and identify two contributions of particular importance. First, the Compton scattering of CMB photons off the free electrons lead to a drag force on the baryon fluid. This drag induces a relative velocity between baryons and CDM which is of the same order of magnitude as the primordially-induced relative velocity, an…
After reionization, emission in the 21 cm hyperfine transition provides a direct probe of neutral hydrogen distributed in galaxies. Different from galaxy redshift surveys, observation of baryon acoustic oscillations in the cumulative 21 cm emission may offer an attractive method for constraining dark energy properties at moderate redshifts. Keys to this program are techniques to extract the faint cosmological signal from various contaminants, such as detector noise and continuum foregrounds. In this paper, we investigate the possible systematic and statistical errors in the acoustic scale esti…
The EDGES experiment recently announced evidence for a broad absorption feature in the sky-averaged radio spectrum around 78 MHz, as may result from absorption in the 21 cm line by neutral hydrogen at z~15-20. If confirmed, one implication is that the spin temperature of the 21 cm line is coupled to the gas temperature by z=20. The known mechanism for accomplishing this is the Wouthuysen-Field effect, whereby Lyman-alpha photons scatter in the intergalactic medium (IGM) and impact the hyperfine level populations. This suggests that early star formation had already produced a copious Lyman-alph…
The baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the distribution of galaxies has been widely studied as an excellent standard ruler for probing cosmic distances and expansion history, and hence dark energy. In contrast, the amplitude of the BAO feature has received relatively little study, mainly due to limited signal-to-noise, and complications due to galaxy biasing, effects of non-linear clustering and dependence on several cosmological parameters. As expected, the amplitude of the BAO feature is sensitive to the cosmic baryon fraction: for standard radiation content, the cosmic microwave b…

The formation of the first galaxies during cosmic dawn and reionization (at redshifts $z=5-30$), triggered the last major phase transition of our universe, as hydrogen evolved from cold and neutral to hot and ionized. The 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen will soon allow us to map these cosmic milestones and study the galaxies that drove them. To aid in interpreting these observations, we upgrade the publicly available code {\tt 21cmFAST}. We introduce a new, flexible parametrization of the additive feedback from: an inhomogeneous, $H_2$-dissociating (Lyman-Werner; LW) background; and dark matter…
We quantitatively investigate the possibility of detecting baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) using single-dish 21cm intensity mapping observations in the post-reionization era. We show that the telescope beam smears out the isotropic BAO signature and, in the case of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) instrument, makes it undetectable at redshifts $z\gtrsim1$. We however demonstrate that the BAO peak can still be detected in the radial 21cm power spectrum and describe a method to make this type of measurements. By means of numerical simulations, containing the 21cm cosmological signal as well…
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (RST), with its field of view and high sensitivity will make surveys of cosmological large-scale structure possible at high redshifts. We investigate the possibility of detecting Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) at redshifts $z>7.6$ for use as a standard ruler. We use data from the hydrodynamic simulation \textsc{BlueTides} in conjunction with the gigaparsec-scale Outer Rim simulation and a model for patchy reionization to create mock RST High Latitude Survey grism data for Lyman-alpha emission line selected galaxies at redshifts $z=7.4$ to $z=10$, cover…
The cross-correlation of the Ly-alpha forest and redshifted 21-cm emission has recently been proposed as an observational tool for mapping out the large-scale structures in the post-reionization era z < 6. This has a significant advantage as the problems of continuum subtraction and foreground removal are expected to be considerably less severe in comparison to the respective auto-correlation signals. Further, the effect of discrete quasar sampling is less severe for the cross-correlation in comparison to the Ly-alpha forest auto-correlation signal. In this paper we explore the possibility of …
This work describes a new instrument optimized for a detection of the neutral hydrogen 21cm power spectrum between redshifts of 0.5-1.5: the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation Broadband and Broad-beam (BAOBAB) Array. BAOBAB will build on the efforts of a first generation of 21cm experiments which are targeting a detection of the signal from the Epoch of Reionization at z ~ 10. At z ~ 1, the emission from neutral hydrogen in self-shielded overdense halos also presents an accessible signal, since the dominant, synchrotron foreground emission is considerably fainter than at redshift 10. The principle sc…
In recent years, the availability of large, complete cluster samples has enabled numerous cosmological parameter inference analyses using cluster number counts. These have provided constraints on the cosmic matter density $Ω_m$ and the amplitude of matter density fluctuations $σ_8$ alternative to those obtained from other standard probes. However, systematics uncertainties, such as the mass calibration bias and selection effects, may still significantly affect these data analyses. Hence, it is timely to explore other proxies of galaxy cluster cosmology that can provide cosmological constraints…
Recently, Tseliakhovich and Hirata (2010) showed that during the cosmic Dark Ages the baryons were typically moving supersonically with respect to the dark matter with a spatially variable Mach number. Such supersonic motion may source shocks that heat the Universe. This motion may also suppress star formation in the first halos. Even a small amount of coupling of the 21cm signal to this motion has the potential to vastly enhance the 21cm brightness temperature fluctuations at 15<z<40 as well as to imprint acoustic oscillations in this signal. We present estimates for the size of this coupling…
We derive constraints on cosmological parameters and tests of dark energy models from the combination of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements with cosmic microwave background (CMB) and Type Ia supernova (SN) data. We take advantage of high-precision BAO measurements from galaxy clustering and the Ly-alpha forest (LyaF) in the BOSS survey of SDSS-III. BAO data alone yield a high confidence detection of dark energy, and in combination with the CMB angular acoustic scale they further imply a nearly flat universe. Combining BAO and SN data into an "inverse distance ladder" yields a 1.7% …
