Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) techniques have been shown to be an efficient method to achieve single-step synthesis of high-quality monolayer graphene (MLG) without the need of active heating. Here we report PECVD-growth of single-crystalline hexagonal bilayer graphene (BLG) flakes and mm-size BLG films with the interlayer twist angle controlled by the growth parameters. The twist angle has been determined by three experimental approaches, including direct measurement of the relative orientation of crystalline edges between two stacked monolayers by scanning electron microscopy, analysis of the twist angle-dependent Raman spectral characteristics, and measurement of the Moiré period with scanning tunneling microscopy. In mm-sized twisted BLG (tBLG) films, the average twist angle can be controlled from 0 to approximately 20 \degree, and the angular spread for a given growth condition can be limited to < 7 \degree. Different work functions between MLG and BLG have been verified by the Kelvin probe force microscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrical measurements of back-gated field-effect-transistor devices based on small-angle tBLG samples revealed high-quality electric characteristics at 300 K and insulating temperature dependence down to 100 K. This controlled PECVD-growth of tBLG thus provides an efficient approach to investigate the effect of varying Moiré potentials on tBLG.
We characterize nanostructures of Bi2Se3 that are grown via metalorganic chemical vapor deposition using the precursors diethyl selenium and trimethyl bismuth. By adjusting growth parameters, we obtain either single-crystalline ribbons up to 10 microns long or thin micron-sized platelets. Four-terminal resistance measurements yield a sample resistivity of 4 mOhm-cm. We observe weak anti-localization and extract a phase coherence length l_phi = 178 nm and spin-orbit length l_so = 93 nm at T = 0.29 K. Our results are consistent with previous measurements on exfoliated samples and samples grown v…
The physical processes occurring in the presence of disorder: point defects, grain boundaries, etc. may have detrimental effects on the electronic properties of graphene. Here we present an approach to reveal the grain structure of graphene by the selective oxidation of defects and subsequent atomic force microscopy analysis. This technique offers a quick and easy alternative to different electron microscopy and diffraction methods and may be used to give quick feedback on the quality of graphene samples grown by chemical vapor deposition.
We synthesize large-area graphene via atmospheric-pressure (AP) chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on copper, and transfer to SiO2 wafers. In contrast to low-pressure (LP) CVD on copper, optical contrast and atomic force microscopy measurements show AP-CVD graphene contains significant multi-layer areas. Raman spectroscopy always shows a single Lorentzian 2D peak, however systematic differences are observed in the 2D peak energy, width, and intensity for single- and multi-layer regions. We conclude that graphene multi-layers grown by AP-CVD on Cu are rotationally disordered.
We examine the quantum Hall effect in bilayer graphene grown on Cu substrates by chemical vapor deposition. Spatially resolved Raman spectroscopy suggests a mixture of Bernal (A-B) stacked and rotationally faulted (twisted) domains. Magnetotransport measurements performed on bilayer domains with a wide 2D band reveal quantum Hall states (QHSs) at filling factors $ν=4, 8, 12$ consistent with a Bernal stacked bilayer, while magnetotransport measurements in bilayer domains defined by a narrow 2D band show a superposition of QHSs of two independent monolayers. The analysis of the Shubnikov-de Haas…
The discovery of electric field induced bandgap opening in bilayer graphene opens new door for making semiconducting graphene without aggressive size scaling or using expensive substrates. However, bilayer graphene samples have been limited to um size scale thus far, and synthesis of wafer scale bilayer graphene posts tremendous challenge. Here we report homogeneous bilayer graphene films over at least 2 inch x 2 inch area, synthesized by chemical vapor deposition on copper foil and subsequently transferred to arbitrary substrates. The bilayer nature of graphene film is verified by Raman spect…
We report nanocrystalline carbon impurities coexisting with graphene synthesized via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on platinum. We observe micron-size island-like impurity layers, which can easily be mistaken for second graphene layers in optical microscopy or secondary electron microscopy (SEM). The island orientation depends on the crystalline orientation of the Pt, as shown by electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD), indicating growth of amorphous carbon below graphene. Dark-field TEM indicates that in addition to uniform single-crystal graphene, our sample is decorated with nanocrystallin…
The discovery of graphene, a single layer of covalently bonded carbon atoms, has attracted intense interests. Initial studies using mechanically exfoliated graphene unveiled its remarkable electronic, mechanical and thermal properties. There has been a growing need and rapid development in large-area deposition of graphene film and its applications. Chemical vapour deposition on copper has emerged as one of the most promising methods in obtaining large-scale graphene films with quality comparable to exfoliated graphene. In this chapter, we review the synthesis and characterizations of graphene…
Graphene nanoribbon (GNR) field-effect transistors (FETs) with widths down to 12 nm have been fabricated by electron beam lithography using a wafer-scale chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process to form the graphene. The GNR FETs show drain-current modulation of approximately 10 at 300 K, increasing to nearly 106 at 4 K. The strong temperature dependence of the minimum current indicates the opening of a bandgap for CVD-grown GNR-FETs. The extracted bandgap is estimated to be around 0.1 eV by differential conductance methods. This work highlights the development of CVD-grown large-area graphene …
We report the synthesis of AB-stacked multilayer graphene via ambient pressure chemical vapor deposition on Cu foils, and demonstrate a method to construct suspended multilayer graphene devices. In four-terminal geometry, such devices were characterized by hot carrier transport at temperatures down to 240 mK and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The differential conductance (dI/dV) shows a characteristic dip at longitudinal voltage bias V=0 at low temperatures, indicating the presence of hot electron effect due to a weak electron-phonon coupling. Under magnetic fields, the magnitude of the dI/dV …
The development of Si-compatible active photonic devices is a high priority in computer and modern electronics industry. Ge is compatible with Si and is a promising light emission material. Nearly all Ge-on-Si materials reported so far were grown using toxic precursor gases. Here we demonstrate the creation of Ge films on Si substrates through physical vapor deposition of toxin-free solid Ge sources. Structural characterization indicates that a high tensile strain is introduced in the Ge film during the deposition process. We attribute the presence of such a tensile strain to the difference in…
2D nanoelectronics based on single-layer MoS2 offers great advantages for both conventional and ubiquitous applications. This paper discusses the large-scale CVD growth of single-layer MoS2 and fabrication of devices and circuits for the first time. Both digital and analog circuits are fabricated to demonstrate its capability for mixed-signal applications.
Temperature-dependent resistivity of graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is investigated. We observe in low mobility CVD graphene device a strong insulating behavior at low temperatures and a metallic behavior at high temperatures manifesting a non-monotonic in the temperature dependent resistivity. This feature is strongly affected by carrier density modulation. To understand this anomalous temperature dependence, we introduce thermal activation of charge carriers in electron-hole puddles induced by randomly distributed charged impurities. Observed temperature evolution of resist…
A slanted cobalt sculptured columnar thin film was fabricated using glancing angle deposition, and coated subsequently with graphene using a low temperature chemical vapor deposition process. The graphene deposition process preserves shape and geometry of the sculptured thin film, which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. According to the Raman spectroscopy results, the graphene coating is two to three monolayers thick and has a high defect concentration. The graphene coverage within the sculptured thin film is determined from generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry using a generaliz…
This work reports the peculiar properties of a graphene film prepared by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of ethylene in high vacuum on a well oriented and carefully cleaned Pt(111) crystal surface maintained at high temperature. In-situ and ex-situ characterization techniques (low energy electron diffraction, high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Raman micro-spectroscopy) used here indicate the prevalence of single layer regions and the presence of two different orientations of the graphene sheets with respect to the Pt(111) substrate. In most …
We report high room-temperature mobility in single layer graphene grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) after wet transfer on SiO$_2$ and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) encapsulation. By removing contaminations trapped at the interfaces between single-crystal graphene and hBN, we achieve mobilities up to$\sim70000cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$ at room temperature and$\sim120000cm^2 V^{-1} s^{-1}$ at 9K. These are over twice those of previous wet transferred graphene and comparable to samples prepared by dry transfer. We also investigate the combined approach of thermal annealing and encapsulation in po…
We study graphene nanoribbon (GNR) interconnects obtained from graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). We report low- and high-field electrical measurements over a wide temperature range, from 1.7 to 900 K. Room temperature mobilities range from 100 to 500 cm2/V/s, comparable to GNRs from exfoliated graphene, suggesting that bulk defects or grain boundaries play little role in devices smaller than the CVD graphene crystallite size. At high-field, peak current densities are limited by Joule heating, but a small amount of thermal engineering allows us to reach ~2 x 10^9 A/cm2, the hig…
Large-area MoS2 atomic layers are synthesized on SiO2 substrates by chemical vapor deposition using MoO3 and S powders as the reactants. Optical, microscopic and electrical measurements suggest that the synthetic process leads to the growth of MoS2 monolayer. The TEM images verify that the synthesized MoS2 sheets are highly crystalline.
We demonstrated that chemical vapor deposition of graphene on Cu films strongly enhances their thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity. Deposition of graphene increases the thermal conductivity of 9 micrometer (25 micrometer) thick Cu films by up to 24% (16%) near room temperature. Interestingly, the observed improvement of thermal properties of graphene coated Cu films is primarily due to changes in Cu morphology during graphene deposition and associated with it temperature treatment rather than graphene's action as an additional heat conducting channel. Enhancement of thermal properties…
Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a particularly interesting member of the family of two-dimensional (2D) materials due to its semiconducting and tunable electronic properties. Currently, the most reliable method for obtaining high-quality industrial scale amounts of 2D materials is chemical vapor deposition (CVD), which results in polycrystalline samples. As grain boundaries (GBs) are intrinsic defect lines within CVD-grown 2D materials, their atomic structure is of paramount importance. Here, through atomic-scale analysis of micrometer-long GBs, we show that covalently bound boundaries in 2D Mo…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have recently attracted attention due to their interesting electronic and optical properties. Fabrication of these materials in a reliable and facile method is important for future applications, as are methods to characterize material quality. Here we present the chemical vapor deposition of MoSe2 monolayer and few layer crystals. These results show the practicality of using chemical vapor deposition to reliably fabricate these materials. Low frequency Raman spectra and mapping of shear and layer breathing modes of MoSe2 are presented for the first time.…
We evaluate how a second graphene layer forms and grows on Cu foils during chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Low-energy electron diffraction and microscopy is used to reveal that the second layer nucleates and grows next to the substrate, i.e., under a graphene layer. This underlayer mechanism can facilitate the synthesis of uniform single-layer films but presents challenges for growing uniform bilayer films by CVD. We also show that the buried and overlying layers have the same edge termination.
The structure, and electrical, mechanical and optical properties of few-layer graphene (FLG) synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on a Ni coated substrate were studied. Atomic resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM) images show highly crystalline single layer parts of the sample changing to multilayer domains where crystal boundaries are connected by chemical bonds. This suggests two different growth mechanisms. CVD and carbon segregation participate in the growth process and are responsible for the different structural formations found. Measurements of the electrical and m…
A Fano-like phonon resonance is observed in few-layer (~3) graphene at room temperature using infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. This Fano resonance is the manifestation of a strong electron-phonon interaction between the discrete in-plane lattice vibrational mode and continuum electronic excitations in graphene. By employing ammonia chemical doping, we have obtained different Fano line shapes ranging from anti-resonance in hole-doped graphene to phonon-dominated in n-type graphene. The Fano resonance shows the strongest interference feature when the Fermi level is located near the Dirac…
Physical vapor deposition can be used to prepare highly stable organic glass systems where the molecules show orientational and translational ordering at the nanoscale. We have used low-dose four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D STEM), enabled by a fast direct electron detector, to map columnar order in glassy samples of a discotic mesogen using a 2 nm probe. Both vapor deposited and liquid cooled glassy films show domains of similar orientation, but their size varies from tens to hundreds of nanometers, depending on processing. Domain sizes are consistent with surface…
We examine different cases of heterostructures consisting of WS2 monolayers grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) as the optically active material. We show that the degree of valley polarization of WS2 is considerably influenced by the material type used to form the heterostructure. Our results suggest the interaction between WS2 and graphene (WS2/Gr) has a strong effect on the temperature dependent depolarization (i.e. decrease of polarization with increasing temperature), with polarization degrees reaching 24% at room temperature under near-resonant excitation. This contrasts to hBN- enca…
Uniform and large area synthesis of bulk insulating ultrathin films is an important subject toward applications of a surface of three dimensional topological insulators (3D-TIs) in various electronic devices. Here we report epitaxial growth of bulk insulating three dimensional topological insulator (3D-TI) Bi2-xSbxTe3-ySey (BSTS) ultrathin films, ranging from a few quintuple to several hundreds of layaers, on mica in a large-area (1 cm2) via catalyst free physical vapor deposition. These films can nondestructively be exfoliated using deionized water and transferred to various kinds of substrat…
We report detection and coherent control of a single proton nuclear spin using an electronic spin of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond as a quantum sensor. In addition to determining the NV-proton hyperfine parameters by employing multipulse sequences, we polarize and coherently rotate the single proton spin, and detect an induced free precession. Observation of free induction decays is an essential ingredient for high resolution proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and the present work extends it to the atomic scale. We also discuss the origin of the proton as incorporation during che…
The critical separation of clusters, corresponding to the maximum density of clusters, affects growth characteristics during physical vapor deposition (PVD). In particular, this separation can affect surface smoothness in growing single-crystalline films, grain size distribution in growing polycrystalline films, and diameter in growing nanorods. This Letter reports a theoretical expression of the critical separation as a function of deposition conditions and accompanying verifications using lattice kinetic Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of PVD on Cu{111}. In contrast to existing theories, the th…
Two-dimensional (2D) layered tungsten diselenides (WSe2) material has recently drawn a lot of attention due to its unique optoelectronic properties and ambipolar transport behavior. However, direct chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesis of 2D WSe2 is not as straightforward as other 2D materials due to the low reactivity between reactants in WSe2 synthesis. In addition, the growth mechanism of WSe2 in such CVD process remains unclear. Here we report the observation of a screw-dislocation-driven (SDD) spiral growth of 2D WSe2 flakes and pyramid-like structures using a sulfur-assisted CVD meth…
CdTe has been a special semiconductor for constructing the lowest-cost solar cells and the CdTe-based Cd1-xZnxTe alloy has been the leading semiconductor for radiation detection applications. The performance currently achieved for the materials, however, is still far below the theoretical expectations. This is because the property-limiting nanoscale defects that are easily formed during the growth of CdTe crystals are difficult to explore in experiments. Here we demonstrate the capability of a bond order potential-based molecular dynamics method for predicting the crystalline growth of CdTe fi…
Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films are promising materials for transparent conductive films (TCFs) with potential applications in flexible displays, touch screens, solar cells and solid-state lighting1,2. However, further reductions in resistivity and in cost of SWCNT films are necessary for high quality TCF products3. Here, we report an improved floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition method to directly and continuously produce ultrathin and freestanding SWCNT films at the hundred meter-scale. Both carbon conversion efficiency and SWCNT TCF yield are increased by three orders of …
Solution-based methods represent the most widespread approach used to deposit hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite films for low-cost but efficient solar cells. However, solution-process techniques offer limited control over film morphology and crystallinity, and most importantly do not allow sequential film deposition to produce perovskite-perovskite heterostructures. Here the successful deposition of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI) thin films by RF-magnetron sputtering is reported, an industry-tested method to grow large area devices with precisely controlled stoichiometry. MAPI films are grown starting fr…
The deposition of boron-doped amorphous carbon thin films on SiO2 substrate was achieved via a focused ion beam-assisted chemical vapor deposition of triphenyl borane (C18H15B) and triphenyl borate (C18H15BO3). The existence of boron in the deposited film from triphenyl borane, with a precursor temperature of 90 °C, was confirmed by a core level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The film exhibited a semiconducting behavior with a band gap of 285 meV. Although the band gap was decreased to 197 meV after an annealing process, the film was still semiconductor. Additionally, a drastic red…
We investigate key electrical properties of monolayer graphene assembled by chemical-vapor-deposition (CVD) as impacted by supporting substrate material. Graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) were fabricated with carbon channel placing directly on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and SiO2, respectively. Small-signal transconductance (gm) and effective carrier mobility (μeff) are improved by 8.5 and 4 times on h-BN, respectively, as compared with that on SiO2. Compared with GFET with exfoliated graphene on SiO2, gm and μeff measured from device with CVD graphene on h-BN substrate exhibits com…
By molecular dynamics simulation, the chemical vapor deposition of amorphous carbon onto graphite and diamond surfaces was studied. In particular, we investigated the effect of source H/C ratio, which is the ratio of the number of hydrogen atoms to the number of carbon atoms in a source gas, on the deposition process. In the present simulation, the following two source gas conditions were tested: one was that the source gas was injected as isolated carbon and hydrogen atoms, and the other was that the source gas was injected as hydrocarbon molecules. Under the former condition, we found that a…
The nucleation of carbon caps on small nickel clusters is studied using a tight binding model coupled to grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. It takes place in a well defined carbon chemical potential range, when a critical concentration of surface carbon atoms is reached. The solubility of carbon in the outermost Ni layers, that depends on the initial, crystalline or disordered, state of the catalyst and on the thermodynamic conditions, is therefore a key quantity to control the nucleation.
We control the anisotropic molecular packing of vapor-deposited glasses of ABH113, a deuterated anthracene derivative with promise for future OLED materials, by changing the deposition rate and substrate temperature at which they are prepared. We find that, at substrate temperatures from 0.65Tg to 0.92Tg, deposition rate significantly modifies the orientational order in the vapor-deposited glasses as characterized by X-ray scattering and birefringence. Both measures of anisotropic order can be described by a single deposition rate-substrate temperature superposition (RTS). This supports the ap…
Uniform single layer graphene was grown on single-crystal Ir films a few nanometers thick which were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on sapphire wafers. These graphene layers have a single crystallographic orientation and a very low density of defects, as shown by diffraction, scanning tunnelling microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Their structural quality is as high as that of graphene produced on Ir bulk single crystals, i.e. much higher than on metal thin films used so far.
Direct growth of flat micrometer-sized bilayer graphene islands in between molybdenum disulfide sheets is achieved by chemical vapor deposition of ethylene at about 800 °C. The temperature assisted decomposition of ethylene takes place mainly at molybdenum disulfide step edges. The carbon atoms intercalate at this high temperature, and during the deposition process, through defects of the molybdenum disulfide surface such as steps and wrinkles. Post growth atomic force microscopy images reveal that circular flat graphene islands have grown at a high yield. They consist of two graphene layers s…
Although chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is one of the preferred routes to synthetic diamond crystals, a full knowledge of the point defects produced during growth is still incomplete. Here we exploit the charge and spin properties of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in type-1b CVD diamond to expose an optically and magnetically dark point defect, so far virtually unnoticed despite an abundance comparable to (if not greater than) that of substitutional nitrogen. Indirectly-detected photo-luminescence spectroscopy indicates a donor state 1.6 eV above the valence band, although the defect's microsc…
We have studied the effect of deposition rate and layer thickness on the properties of epitaxial MgB2 thin films grown by hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition on 4H-SiC substrates. The MgB2 film deposition rate depends linearly on the concentration of B2H6 in the inlet gas mixture. We found that the superconducting and normal-state properties of the MgB2 films are determined by the film thickness, not by the deposition rate. When the film thickness was increased, the transition temperature, Tc, increased and the residual resistivity, rho0, decreased. Above about 300 nm, a Tc of 41.8 K, a …
A technique has been developed for depositing diamond crystals on the endfaces of optical fibers and capturing the fluorescence generated by optically active defects in the diamond into the fiber. This letter details the diamond growth on optical fibers and transmission of fluorescence through the fiber from the nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) color center in diamond. Control of the concentration of defects incorporated during the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth process is also demonstrated. These are the first critical steps in developing a fiber coupled single photon source based on optically …
Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) allows growing transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) over large surface areas on inexpensive substrates. In this work, we correlate the structural quality of CVD grown MoS$_2$ monolayers (MLs) on SiO$_2$/Si wafers studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) with high optical quality revealed in optical emission and absorption from cryogenic to ambient temperatures. We determine a defect concentration of the order of 10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ for our samples with HRTEM. To have access to the intrinsic optical quality of the MLs, we remove the …
We have synthesized a large amount of boron-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by hot-filament chemical vapor deposition. The synthesis was carried out in a flask using a methanol solution of boric acid as a source material. The scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy were performed to evaluate the structural properties of the obtained MWNTs. In order to evaluate the electrical properties, temperature dependence of resistivity was measured in an individual MWNTs with four metal electrodes. The Ramman shifts suggest carrier injection …
We propose a unified moving boundary problem for surface growth by electrochemical and chemical vapor deposition, which is derived from constitutive equations into which stochastic forces are incorporated. We compute the coefficients in the interface equation of motion as functions of phenomenological parameters. The equation features the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) non-linearity and instabilities which, depending on surface kinetics, can hinder the asymptotic KPZ scaling. Our results account for the universality and the experimental scarcity of KPZ scaling in the growth processes considered.
GaN/SiO2 core/shell nanowires are grown by cobalt phthalocyanine catalyst assisted vapor-liquid-solid route, in which Si wafer coated with a mixture of gallium and indium is used as the source for Ga and Si and ammonia is used as the precursor for nitrogen and hydrogen. Gallium in the presence of indium and hydrogen, which results from the dissociation of ammonia, forms Si-Ga-In alloy at the growth temperature around 910 degree Celsius. This alloy acts as the source of Si, Ga and In. A detailed study using a variety of characterization tools reveals that these wires, which are several tens of …
This is a Comment on a recent publication: Y.-P. Zhao et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 3229 (2000). In the Letter, the authors report on an experimental investigation of polymeric (p-xylene) thin film growth and propose a new universality class not previously known. Here, we point out that the critical exponents reported in the Letter are consistent with the critical exponents of Das Sarma-Tamborenea growth model.
This work presents a comparison of the structural, chemical and electronic properties of multi-layer graphene grown on SiC(000-1) by using two different growth approaches: thermal decomposition and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The topography of the samples was investigated by using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to examine the sample on a large scale. Raman spectroscopy was used to assess the crystallinity and electronic behavior of the multi-layer graphene and to estimate its thickness in a non-invasive way. While the crystallinity of t…
A cheap and flexible method is introduced that enables the epitaxial growth of bilayer graphene on Pt(111) by sequential chemical vapour deposition. Extended regions of two stacked graphene sheets are obtained by, first, the thermal decomposition of ethylene and the subsequent formation of graphene. In the second step, a sufficiently thick Pt film buries the first graphene layer and acts as a platform for the fabrication of the second graphene layer in the third step. A final annealing process then leads to the diffusion of the first graphene sheet to the surface until the bilayer stacking wit…
In this work, the single-component Cu metallic glass was fabricated by the physical vapor deposition on the Zr (0001) crystal substrate at 100 K using the classical molecular dynamic simulation. The same deposition process was performed on the Cu (1 0 0) and Ni (1 0 0) crystal substrate for comparison, only the Cu crystal deposited layer with the fcc structure can be obtained. When depositing the Cu atoms on the Zr substrate at 300 K, the crystal structure was formed, which indicates that except the suitable substrate, low temperature is also a key factor for the amorphous structure formation.…
A comparative study of the structural, microstructural and magnetic properties of CrO$_2$ thin films grown onto (110) and (100) TiO$_2$ rutile single crystal substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), using CrO$_3$ as chromium precursor and either oxygen or argon as carrier gas is presented. Our results show that growth under argon carrier gas leads to high quality CrO$_2$ epilayers with structural and magnetic properties similar to those obtained using the more standard oxygen carrier gas. Furthermore, we interpret the larger magnetic coercivity observed for the (110) oriented films in te…
We study the surface dynamics of silica films grown by low pressure chemical vapor deposition. Atomic force microscopy measurements show that the surface reaches a scale invariant stationary state compatible with the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in three dimensions. At intermediate times the surface undergoes an unstable transient due to shadowing effects. By varying growth conditions and using spectroscopic techniques, we determine the physical origin of KPZ scaling to be a low value of the surface sticking probability, related to the surface concentration of reactive groups. We propose…
