Recently it has been found that quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase diagram possesses a duality between chiral symmetry breaking and pion condensation. For the first time this was revealed in the QCD motivated toy model. Then it was demonstrated in effective models as well and new additional dualities being found. We briefly recap the main features of this story and then discuss its applications as a tool to explore the QCD phase structure. The most appealing application is the possibility of getting the results on the QCD phase diagram at large baryon density. Taking the idea from large $1/N_{c}$ universalities it was argued that the scenario of circumventing the sign problem with the help of dualities seems plausible. It is also discussed that there is a persistent problem about whether there should be catalysis or anti-catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking by chiral imbalance. One can probably say that the issue is settled after lattice results (first principle approach), where the catalysis was observed. But they used an unphysically large pion mass so it is still interesting to get additional indications that this is the case. It is shown just by the duality property that there exists catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking. So, having in mind our results and the earlier lattice simulations, one can probably claim that this issue is settled. It is demonstrated that the duality can be used to obtain new results. As an example, it is showcased how the phase structure of dense quark matter with chiral imbalance (with possibility of inhomogeneous phases) can be obtained from the knowledge of a QCD phase diagram with isopin asymmetry.
In this letter the dualities of thermodynamics of dense quark/hadronic matter are discussed. It is shown that chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) phenomenon is dual to charged pion condensation (PC) phenomenon.
In this paper the phase structure of the dense quark matter has been investigated in the presence of baryon $μ_B$, isospin $μ_I$, chiral $μ_{5}$ and chiral isospin $μ_{I5}$ chemical potentials in the framework of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. It has been shown that in the large-$N_{c}$ limit ($N_{c}$ is the number of quark colours) there exist three duality correspondences in the model. The first duality is between the chiral symmetry breaking and the charged pion condensation phenomena. And there are two new dualities that hold only for chiral symmetry breaking and charged pion condensation phen…
We discuss the role of dilaton, which is supposed to be representing a special feature of scale symmetry of QCD, trace anomaly, in dense baryonic matter. The idea that the scale symmetry breaking of QCD is responsible for the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry is presented along the similar spirit of Freund-Nambu model. The incorporation of dilaton field in the hidden local symmetric parity doublet model is briefly sketched with the possible role of dilaton at high density baryonic matter, the emergence of linear sigma model in dilaton limit.
After the first predictions in seventies that in dense nuclear matter, for example, in neutron stars there could be pion condensation phenomenon, it was shown that at least s-wave pion condensation is unlikely to occur in such a medium in different approaches including NJL model consideration with neutrality and $β$-equilibrium condition. Then it has been found a condition that can promote this phenomenon in dense baryonic matter, it is chiral imbalance, so now it is interesting if this generation can survive rather strict requirement of electric neutrality and $β$-equilibrium. Here in this pa…
The response function of a homogeneous and dense hadronic system to a time-dependent (baryon) vector potential is discussed for holographic dense QCD (D4/D8 embedding) both in the confined and deconfined phases. Confined holographic QCD is an uncompressible and static baryonic insulator at large N_c and large λ, with a gapped vector spectrum and a massless pion. Deconfined holographic QCD is a diffusive conductor with restored chiral symmetry and a gapped transverse baryonic current. Similarly, dense D3/D7 is diffusive for any non-zero temperature at large N_c and large λ. At zero temperature …
We use the relativistic perfect-fluid hydrodynamics to describe the space-time evolution of dense baryonic matter produced in the central nucleus-nucleus collisions at HIRFL-CSR, HIAF, FAIR-CBM, NICA-MPD, and RHIC-BES. The transverse flow of the fireball with cylindrical symmetry and boost invariant along the longitudinal direction is also analyzed. Based on the relativistic kinetic theory, we also present the first preliminary calculation on the production of low-mass dileptons and low-pT photons can be considered as the signals of the dense baryonic matter produced in the central Au-Au and U…
It is shown that explicitly broken scale symmetry is essential for dense skyrmion matter in hidden local symmetry theory. Consistency with the vector manifestation fixed point for the hidden local symmetry of the lowest-lying vector mesons and the dilaton limit fixed point for scale symmetry in dense matter is found to require that the anomalous dimension ($γ_{G^2}$) of the gluon field strength tensor squared ($G^2$) that represents the quantum trace anomaly should be $0 <γ_{G^2} <3$.
I discuss a novel scenario on how baryonic matter could turn into a Fermi liquid of fractionalized baryons driven by high density inside compact stars. It involves the "hidden" local vector bosons $ρ$ and $ω$ together with the "hidden" scale symmetry dilaton $χ$, both taken to be "dual" to the quarks and gluons of QCD in the sense of quark $\leftrightarrow$ hadron duality and offers a possibility, exploiting the "Cheshire Cat Principle", to unify the "dichotomy" of baryons described in terms of skyrmions and fractional quantum Hall (FQH) droplets {\it and} to explore how the baryonic matter co…
We describe the on-going effort to formulate the baryon-quark continuity in terms of a topology change in the equation of state (EoS) of dense baryonic matter in analogy to -- and inspired by -- the mapping of the characteristics of Chern-Simon topological field theory to Kohn-Sham density functional theory in the fractional quantized Hall effect (FQHE). This is done by translating the density-dependent characteristics of the skyrmion-half-skyrmion transition formulated in the presence of hidden local symmetry and (hidden) scale symmetry to the density-dependent parameters of a renormalization…
Unlike the octet baryons for $N_f=3$, there is no skyrmion coming from the $η^\prime$ meson. It is instead described as a fractional quantum Hall droplet, a pancake or a pita involving a singular $η^\prime$ ring in which Chern-Simons fields live. By incorporating hidden local symmetry and hidden scale symmetry in nuclear dynamics, I describe how to access baryon-charged quantum Hall droplets in dense nuclear matter in terms of the nuclear scale-chiral effective field theory approach ``G$n$EFT" with the $U_A(1)$ anomaly taken into account. I discuss how the single-flavor baryon that I will call…
It has been shown in [32,33] in the framework of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the assumption of spatially homogeneous condensates that in the large-$N_{c}$ limit ($N_{c}$ is the number of quark colours) there exist three dual symmetries of the thermodynamic potential, which describes dense quark matter with chiral and isospin imbalances. The main duality is between the chiral symmetry breaking and the charged pion condensation phenomena. There have been a lot of studies and hints that the ground state could be characterized by spatially inhomogeneous condensates, so the question arises if du…
We evaluate the effective kaon mass in dense nuclear matter. Pauli blocking and nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations are incorporated. The effects of short-range correlations are shown to be moderate and figure importantly only at densities larger than 2 times normal nuclear density. We discuss the relations between the present results and the results obtained in next-to-next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory (${{\cal O} (Q^3)}$, where $Q$ is the characteristic small energy-momentum scale probed). We also discuss mean-field aspects, with some remarks on the relation between the s…
We clarify and extend further the idea developed in \cite{PKLMR,MLPR} that baryonic matter at high density has an emergent "pseudo-conformal symmetry." It is argued that as baryonic density exceeds $n \simeq n_{1/2} \gtrsim 2n_0$, a topology change mimicking the baryon-quark continuity takes place at $n_{1/2}$. In terms of skyrmions, this corresponds to the transition from skyrmions to half-skyrmions and impacts on the equation of state of dense baryonic matter. The emergence in medium at $n_{1/2}$ of parity-doublet symmetry -- which is invisible in QCD in matter-free vacuum -- plays the cruci…
The dense baryonic matter and hadron properties in medium were simulated by using a Skyrme model including the ground state vector mesons introduced from the hidden local symmetry approach up to the next to leading order. We found that both the $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons affect the baryonic matter and medium modified hadron properties dramatically. The most remarkable observation is that, the pion decay constant and the nucleon mass have the similar density dependence which agrees with the large $N_c$ argument. Explicitly, they drop with increasing density in the Skyrmion phase and stop decreasing at …
In this paper the phase structure of dense baryon matter composed of $u$ and $d$ quarks with two colors has been investigated in the presence of baryon $μ_B$, isospin $μ_I$ and chiral isospin $μ_{I5}$ chemical potentials in the framework of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. In the chiral limit, it has been shown that the duality between phases with spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and condensation of charged pions, found in the three color case, remains valid in the two color case. In addition, it has been shown that there are two more dualities in the phase diagram in two color case, namely (as …
When scale symmetry is implemented into hidden local symmetry in low-energy strong interactions to arrive at a scale-invariant hidden local symmetric (HLS) theory, the scalar $f_0(500)$ may be interpreted as pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone (pNG) boson, i.e., dilaton, of spontaneously broken scale invariance, joining the pseudo-scalar pNG bosons $π$ and the matter fields $V=(ρ,ω)$ as relevant degrees of freedom. Implementing the skyrmion-half-skyrmion transition predicted at large $N_c$ in QCD at a density roughly twice the nuclear matter density found in the crystal simulation of dense skyrmion matter,…
Exploiting certain robust topological inputs from the skyrmion description of compressed baryonic matter with a scale-chiral symmetric Lagrangian, we predict the equation of state that is consistent with the properties of nuclear matter at the equilibrium density, supports the maximum mass of massive compact star $\sim 2 M_\odot$ and surprisingly gives the sound velocity close to the "conformal velocity" $1/\sqrt{3}$ at densities $\gtrsim 3 n_0$. At the core of this result is the observation that parity-doubling occurs in the nucleon structure as density goes above $\sim 2n_0$ with a chiral-si…
When skyrmions representing nucleons are put on crystal lattice and compressed to simulate high density, there is a transition above the normal nuclear matter density $n_0$ from a matter consisting of skyrmions with integer baryon charge to a state of half-skyrmions with half-integer baryon charge. We exploit this observation in an effective field theory formalism to access dense baryonic system. We find that the topology change involved implies a changeover from a Fermi liquid structure to a non-Fermi liquid with the chiral condensate in the nucleon "melted off." The $\sim 80%$ of the nucleon…
We have examined the available latest SPS data on $J/ψ$ suppression in Pb+Pb and In+In collisions at 158 A GeV. Our employed model, with parameters fixed by $p$-$p$ and $p$-nucleus collisions, gives excellent description of NA50 and NA60 data on centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ suppression. The model is then applied to predict the centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ production in Au+Au collisions at FAIR energy domain. A much larger suppression of $J/ψ$ is predicted. In addition the possible effects of a baryon rich medium on $J/ψ$ production is also investigated.
The dilaton-limit fixed point and the scaling properties of hadrons in the close vicinity of the fixed point in dense baryonic matter uncovered in hidden local symmetry implemented with spontaneously broken scale symmetry are shown to reveal a surprisingly intricate interplay, hitherto unsuspected, between the origin of the bulk of proton mass and the renormalization-group flow of the ω-nuclear interactions. This rends a theoretical support to the previous (phenomenologically) observed correlation between the dropping nucleon mass and the behavior of the ω-nuclear interactions in dense matter …
New astrophysical instruments such as skA (square kilometer Array) and IXO (formerly Constellation X) promise the discovery of tens of thousands of new isolated rotating neutron stars (pulsars), neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs), and soft gamma repeaters (SGRs). Many of these neutron stars will experience dramatic density changes over their active lifetimes, driven by either stellar spin-up or spin-down, which may trigger phase transitions in their dense baryonic cores. More than that, accretion of matter onto neutron stars in LMXBs is believed to…
We explore the hadron properties in dense baryonic matter in a unified way by using a Skyrme model constructed with an effective Lagrangian which includes the $ρ$ and $ω$ vector mesons as hidden gauge bosons and is valid up to $O(p^4)$ in chiral expansion including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino terms. With the two input values of pion decay constant and the lowest lying vector meson mass which can be fixed in free space, all the other low energy constants in the effective Lagrangian are determined by their master formulas derived from holographic QCD models, which allows us to study the baryonic…
The Skyrme model provides a novel unified approach to nuclear physics. In this approach, single baryon, baryonic matter and medium-modified hadron properties are treated on the same footing. Intrinsic density dependence (IDD) reflecting the change of vacuum by compressed baryonic matter figures naturally in the approach. In this article, we review the recent progress on accessing dense nuclear matter by putting baryons treated as solitons, namely, skyrmions, on crystal lattice with accents on the implications in compact stars.
A chain of connections in compressed baryonic matter, up-to-date glaringly missing in nuclear effective field theory, between intrinsic or emergent symmetries of QCD, mesons-gluons dualities, vector meson dominance and Chern-Simons fields has recently been revealed, presaging a possible new paradigm in nuclear theory. It indicates a ubiquitous role, thus far unexplored, of hidden symmetries -- flavor-local and scale -- permeating from dilute baryonic systems to normal nuclear matter and then to compact-star matter. Here I give a brief account of the possibly "indispensable" relevance of the $η…
In this paper, we calculate analytically the baryonic density and susceptibilities, which are sensitive probes to the fermionic degrees of freedom, in a holographic model of QCD both in its hot QGP phase and in its cold dense phase. Interesting patterns due to strong coupling dynamics will be shown and valuable lessons for QCD will be discussed.
We propose a new chirality-imbalance phenomenon arising in baryonic/high dense matters under a magnetic field. A locally chiral-imbalanced (parity-odd) domain can be created due to the electromagnetically induced $U(1)_A$ anomaly in high-dense matters. The proposed local-chiral imbalance generically possesses a close relationship to a spacial distribution of an inhomogeneous chiral (pion)-vector current coupled to the magnetic field. To demonstrate such a nontrivial correlation, we take the skyrmion crystal approach to model baryonic/high dense matters. Remarkably enough, we find the chirality…
Probing dense hadronic matter is thus far an uncharted field of physics. Here we give a brief summary of the highlights of what has been so far accomplished and what will be done in the years ahead by the World Class University III Project at Hanyang University in the endeavor to unravel and elucidate the multifacet of the cold dense baryonic matter existing in the interior of the densest visible stable object in the Universe, i.e., neutron stars, strangeness stars and/or quark stars, from a modest and simplified starting point of an effective field theory modeled on the premise of QCD as well…
We describe the mapping at high density of topological structure of baryonic matter to a nuclear effective field theory that implements hidden symmetries emergent from strong nuclear correlations. The theory so constructed is found to be consistent with no conflicts with the presently available observations in both normal nuclear matter and compact-star matter. The hidden symmetries involved are "local flavor symmetry" of the vector mesons identified to be (Seiberg-)dual to the gluons of QCD and hidden "quantum scale symmetry" with an IR fixed point with a "genuine dilaton (GD)" characterized …
This is a summary of the talks I gave at Korean Physical Society meeting (April 26, 2012, Daejeon, Korea) and the 4th Asian Triangle Heavy Ion Conference (ATHIC) (November 14, 2012, Pusan, Korea). They are based on the series of work done at Hanyang University in the World Class University III Program under the theme of "From Dense Matter to Compact Stars." The program was conceived and executed to understand highly compressed baryonic matter in anticipation of the forthcoming RIB machine "RAON" which is in construction in the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) in Korea. The problems treated ra…
We summarize recent developments in identifying the ground state of dense baryonic matter and beyond. The topics include deconfinement from baryonic matter to quark matter, a diquark mixture, topological effect coupled with chirality and density, and inhomogeneous chiral condensates.
We have calculated the in-medium magnetic moments of octet baryons in the presence of hot and dense symmetric nuclear matter. Effective magnetic moments of baryons have been derived from medium modified quark masses within chiral SU(3) quark mean field model. Further, for better insight of medium modification of baryonic magnetic moments, we have considered the explicit contributions from the valence quarks, sea quarks as well as sea orbital angular momentum of sea quarks. These effects have been successful in giving the description of baryonic magnetic moments in vacuum. The magnetic moments …
The properties of two-flavored massless Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in (1+1)-dimensional $R^1\times S^1$ spacetime with compactified space coordinate are investigated in the presence of isospin and quark number chemical potentials $μ_I$, $μ$. The consideration is performed in the large $N_c$ limit, where $N_c$ is the number of colored quarks. It is shown that at $L=\infty$ ($L$ is the length of the circumference $S^1$) the pion condensation (PC) phase with {\it zero quark number density} is realized at arbitrary nonzero $μ_I$ and for rather small values of $μ$. However, at arbitrary finite values…
I describe a novel phase structure of cold dense baryonic matter predicted in a hidden local symmetry approach anchored on gauge theory and in a holographic dual approach based on the Sakai-Sugimoto model of string theory. This new phase is populated with baryons with half-instanton quantum number in the gravity sector which is dual to half-skyrmion in gauge sector in which chiral symmetry is restored while light-quark hadrons are in the color-confined phase. It is suggested that such a phase that aries at a density above that of normal nuclear matter and below or at the chiral restoration poi…
I discuss how to access dense baryonic matter of compact stars by combining hidden local symmetry (HLS) of light-quark vector mesons with spontaneously broken scale invariance of a (pseudo) Nambu-Goldstone boson, dilaton, in a description that parallels the approach to dilatonic Higgs. Some of the surprising observations are that the bulk of proton mass is not Nambu-Goldstonian, parity doubling emerges at high density and the EoS of baryonic matter can be soft enough for heavy-ion processes at low density and stiff enough at high density for $\sim 2$ solar mass neutron stars.
As the first in a series of systematic work on dense hadronic matter, we study the properties of the pion in dense medium using Skyrme's effective Lagrangian as a unified theory of the hadronic interactions applicable in the large $N_c$ limit. Dense baryonic matter is described as the ground state of a skyrmion matter which appears in two differentiated phases as a function of matter density: i) at high densities as a stable cubic-centered (CC) half-skyrmion crystal; ii) at low densities as an unstable face-centered cubic (FCC) skyrmion crystal. We substitute the latter by a stable inhomogeneo…
We find that, when the dilaton is implemented as a (pseudo-)Nambu-Goldstone boson using a conformal compensator or "conformon" in a hidden gauge symmetric Lagrangian written to $O(p^4)$ from which baryons arise as solitons, namely, skyrmions, the vector manifestation and chiral symmetry restoration at high density predicted in hidden local symmetry theory --- which is consistent with Brown-Rho scaling --- are lost or sent to infinite density. It is shown that they can be restored if in medium the behavior of the $ω$ field is taken to deviate from that of the $ρ$ meson in such a way that the fl…
In the large N limit cold dense nuclear matter must be in a lattice phase. This applies also to holographic models of hadron physics. In a class of such models, like the generalized Sakai-Sugimoto model, baryons take the form of instantons of the effective flavor gauge theory that resides on probe flavor branes. In this paper we study the phase structure of baryonic crystals by analyzing discrete periodic configurations of such instantons. We find that instanton configurations exhibit a series of "popcorn" transitions upon increasing the density. Through these transitions normal (3D) lattices …
How the axial coupling constant $g_A$ in nuclear Gamow-Teller transitions described in shell model gets "quenched" to a universal constant close to 1 can be explained by nuclear correlations in Fermi-liquid fixed point theory using a scale-symmetric chiral Lagrangian supplemented with hidden local symmetric vector mesons. Contrary to what one might naively suspect -- and has been discussed in some circles, there is no fundamental quenching at nuclear matter density due to QCD condensates. When the density of many-body systems treated with the same Lagrangian increases beyond the density $n=n_{…
We calculate the bound state properties of $J/ψ$ in a hot and dense QCD plasma using phenomenological potentials augmented by inputs from perturbative QCD. The temperature and density region of study will be relevant in future heavy ion collision experiments at FAIR. We find that the effect of baryon density on the dissociation of $J/ψ$ is small in this regime. However we indicate that if there is a critical end point in the QCD phase diagram then strong density fluctuation will dissociate charmonia near hadronization. The measurement of $J/ψ$ suppression can therefore signify the existence of…
The phase structure of dense quark matter in the two color case has been investigated with nonzero baryon $μ_B$, isospin $μ_I$ and chiral isospin $μ_{I5}$ chemical potentials. %in the framework of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with quark-antiquark and quark-quark interaction channels. It has been shown in the mean-field approximation that there exist three dualities, one of them between phases with spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and condensation of charged pions, found in the three color case. The other two dual symmetries between the phase with condensation of charged pions and the phase wi…
The in-medium properties of $D_S$ mesons are investigated within the framework of an effective hadronic model, which is a generalization of a chiral SU(3) model, to SU(4), in order to study the interactions of the charmed hadrons. In the present work, the $D_s$ mesons are observed to experience net attractive interactions in a dense hadronic medium, hence reducing the masses of the $D_S^+$ and $D_S^-$ mesons from the vacuum values. While this conclusion holds in both nuclear and hyperonic media, the magnitude of the mass drop is observed to intensify with the inclusion of strangeness in the me…
We show that $\mathbb{Z}_3$-valued particle-vortex braiding phases are present in high density quark matter. Certain mesonic and baryonic excitations, in the presence of a superfluid vortex, have orbital angular momentum quantized in units of $\hbar/3$. Such non-local topological features can distinguish phases whose realizations of global symmetries, as probed by local order parameters, are identical. If $\mathbb{Z}_3$ braiding phases and angular momentum fractionalization are absent in lower density hadronic matter, as is widely expected, then the quark matter and hadronic matter regimes of …
Hadron properties in dense medium are treated in a unified way in a skyrmion model constructed with an effective Lagrangian, in which the rho and omega vector mesons are introduced as hidden gauge bosons, valid up to O(p^4) terms in chiral expansion including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino terms. All the low energy constants - apart from f_pi and m_rho - are fixed by the master formula derived from the relation between 5-D hQCD and 4-D HLS. This allows one to pin down the density n_1/2 at which the skyrmions in medium fractionize into half-skyrmions, bringing in a drastic change in the EoS of den…
We investigate mass shifts of charmonia driven by change of the gluon condensate below but near transition temperatures at finite baryonic chemical potential. Extending previous prescription on the relation between gluon condensates and thermodynamic quantities, we model the gluon condensates of hadronic matter at finite temperature and baryonic chemical potential such that the scalar gluon condensate fits with the latest lattice QCD data. By making use of the QCD sum rule and the second order Stark effect, we find that the smoother transition in the full QCD can lead to moderate mass shifts o…
This conference proceeding presents an overview of the modern approaches in the study of baryonic matter at high densities, focusing on the use of online repositories such as CompOSE and MUSES for the calculation of neutron star properties. In this context, relevant astrophysical constraints for the equations of state (mass-radius relation, speed of sound, tidal deformability) are discussed.

The presence of baryonic matter leads to the mixing between transverse $ρ$ and $a_1$ mesons through a set of $ωρa_1$-type interactions, which results in the modification to the dispersion relation. We show that a clear enhancement of the vector spectral function appears below $\sqrt{s}=m_ρ$ for small three-momenta of the $ρ$ meson, and thus the vector spectrum exhibits broadening. We also discuss its relevance to dilepton measurements.
We formulate kaon condensation in dense baryonic matter with anti-kaons fluctuating from the Fermi-liquid fixed point. This entails that in the Wilsonian RG approach, the decimation is effectuated in the baryonic sector to the Fermi surface while in the meson sector to the origin. In writing the kaon-baryon (KN) coupling, we will take a generalized hidden local symmetry Lagrangian for the meson sector endowed with a "mended symmetry" that has the unbroken symmetry limit at high density in which the Goldstone $π$, scalar $s$, and vectors $ρ$ (and $ω$) and $a_1$ become massless. The vector meson…
We study the weak decay of the neutral pion to a neutrino-antineutrino pair, $π^0\to ν\barν$, in the Skyrme model. In baryon free-space the process is forbidden by helicity while in a dense baryonic medium, the process becomes possible already to leading order in $G_F$ due to the break-down of Lorentz symmetry in the background medium.
We discuss properties of quark matter at finite baryon densities and zero temperature in a Vlasov approach. We use a screened interquark Richardson's potential consistent with the indications of Lattice QCD calculations. We analyze the choices of the quark masses and the parameters entering the potential which reproduce the binding energy (B.E.) of infinite nuclear matter. There is a transition from nuclear to quark matter at densities 5 times above normal nuclear matter density. The transition could be revealed from the determination of the position of the shifted meson masses in dense baryon…
During the last years it has become possible to address the cold and dense regime of QCD directly for sufficiently heavy quarks, where combined strong coupling and hopping expansions are convergent and a 3d effective theory can be derived, which allows to control the sign problem either in simulations or by fully analytic calculations. In this contribution we review the effective theory and study the $N_c$-dependence of the nuclear liquid gas transition, as well as the equation of state of baryonic matter in the strong coupling limit. We find the transition to become more strongly first order …
This note is based on four lectures that I gave at the 10th Taiwan Nuclear Spring School held at Hualien, Taiwan in January 2002. It aims to correlate the old notion of Cheshire Cat Principle developed for elementary baryons to the modern notion of quark-baryon and gluon-meson "continuities" or "dualities" in dilute and dense many-body systems and predict what would happen to mesons when squeezed by nuclear matter to high density as possibly realized in compact stars. Using color-flavor locking in QCD, the vector mesons observed at low density can be described as the Higgsed gluons dressed by …
We study nucleon structure with positive and negative parities using a parity doublet model endowed with hidden local symmetry (HLS) with the objective to probe dense baryonic matter. The model -- that we shall refer to as "PDHLS model" for short -- allows a chiral-invariant mass of the nucleons unconnected to spontaneously broken chiral symmetry which comes out to be m_0 ~ 200 MeV at tree level from fitting to the decay width of the parity doubler, N(1535), to nucleon-pion and nucleon axial coupling g_A=1.267. The presence of a substantial m_0 that remains non-vanishing at chiral restoration …
This talk is based on work done in collaboration with G.E. Brown and D.-P. Min on kaon condensation in dense baryonic medium treated in chiral perturbation theory using heavy-baryon formalism. It contains, in addition to what was recently published, some new results based on the analysis on kaonic atoms by Friedman, Gal and Batty and a discussion on a renormalization-group analysis to meson condensation made together with H.K. Lee and Sin. Negatively charged kaons are predicted to condense at the critical density $2\lsim ρ/ρ_0\lsim 4$, in the range to allow all the intriguing new phenomena pre…
We study the anomaly induced effects of dense baryonic matter under rotation. We derive the anomalous terms that account for the chiral vortical effect in the low-energy effective theory for light Nambu-Goldstone modes. The anomalous terms lead to new physical consequences, such as the anomalous Hall energy current and spontaneous generation of angular momentum in a magnetic field (or spontaneous magnetization by rotation). In particular, we show that, due to the presence of such anomalous terms, the ground state of the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) under sufficiently fast rotation becomes the …
