Black holes are among the most intriguing objects in nature. They are believed to be fully described by General Relativity (GR), and the astrophysical black holes are expected to belong to the Kerr family, obeying the no-hair theorems. Alternative theories of gravity or parameterized deviations of GR allow black hole solutions, which have additional parameters other than mass and angular momentum. We analyze a Schwarzschild-like metric, proposed by Johannsen and Psaltis, characterized by its mass and a deformation parameter. We compute the absorption cross section of massless scalar waves for different values of this deformation parameter and compare it with the corresponding scalar absorption cross section of the Schwarzschild black hole. We also present analytical approximations for the absorption cross section in the high-frequency regime. We check the consistence of our results comparing the numerical and analytical approaches, finding excellent agreement.
We address the concerns raised by the author of "Comment: Some exact quasinormal frequencies of a massless scalar field in Schwarzschild spacetime" appeared in arXiv:1807.05940. In particular, we explain why the analysis in our paper [Phys. Rev. D{\bf{98}}, 024017 (2018)] is relevant and correct.
We study a set of static solutions of the Einstein equations in presence of a massless scalar field and establish their connection to the Kantowski-Sachs cosmological solutions based on some kind of duality transformations. The physical properties of the limiting case of an empty hyperbolic spacetime (pseudo-Schwarzschild geometry) are analyzed in some detail.
A short derivation is given of the weak gravitational field approximation to the scalar massless propagator in Schwarzschild spacetime obtained by Paszko using the path-integral approach. The contribution from the direct coupling of the quantum field to the scalar curvature is explictly included. The propagator complies with Hadamard's pattern, and the vacuum state is consistent with the perturbative version of the Boulware vacuum. The momentum space propagator is computed for massless or massive particles to the same perturbative order. The renormalized value of $\ < ϕ^2(x)\ >$ for the massle…
The approximate stress-energy tensor of the conformally invariant massless spin-1/2 field in the Hartle-Hawking state in the Schwarzschild spacetime is constructed. It is shown that by solving the conservation equation in conformal space and utilizing the regularity conditions in a physical metric one obtains the stress-energy tensor that is in a good agreement with the numerical calculations. The back reaction of the quantized field upon the spacetime metric is briefly discussed.
A new branch of quasinormal modes for a massless scalar field propagating on the Schwarzschild spacetime was recently announced [1807.04513]. We review the quasinormal modes characterisation and arguments and identify the flaws in their proof. Then, we preset explicit counterexamples to such arguments. Finally, we study the modes via alternative methods and do not find the new branch. We conclude against their interpretation.
In this paper we are studying the scattering of massless Dirac fermions by Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes. This is done by applying the partial wave analysis to the scattering modes obtained after solving the massless Dirac equation in the asymptotic regions of the two black hole geometries. We succeed to obtain analytic phase shifts with the help of which the scattering cross section is computed. The glory and spiral scattering phenomena are showed to be present like in the case of massive fermion scattering by black holes.
In Schwarzschild spacetime, the gravitational spin-orbit couplings of the massless Dirac field and the photon field can be studied in a unified way. In contrary to the previous investigations presented mainly at the quantum-mechanical level, our work is presented at the level of quantum field theory without resorting to the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. If massless Dirac particles and photons have the same momentums, their energy-level splittings due to the gravitational spin-orbit couplings are the same. Massless Dirac particles and photons coming from the Hawking radiations are partially …
The photon vacuum polarization effect in curved spacetime leads to birefringence, i.e. the photon velocity becomes greater than (or less than) the speed of light depending on its polarization. We investigate this phenomenon in a Schwarzschild curved spacetime.
The scalar scattering cross section is computed for Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black holes on the brane. The cross sections are computed numerically via the partial-wave method. The phase shifts are found numerically and also via the Born approximation. It is shown that spacetimes with more than six dimensions present a finite scattering cross section in all directions.
We evaluate the quasinormal modes of massless Dirac perturbation in a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by the free static spherically symmetric quintessence by using the third-order WKB approximation. The result shows that due to the presence of quintessence, the massless field damps more slowly. The real part of the quasinormal modes increases and the the absolute value of the imaginary part increases when the state parameter $w_q$ increases. In other words, the massless Dirac field decays more rapidly for the larger $w_q$. And the peak value of potential barrier gets higher as $|k|$ incre…
We show that not all quasinormal modes of a massless scalar field in the Schwarzschild metric are encoded in the corresponding characteristic equation expressed by means of a continued fraction. We provide an analytical formula for these new hitherto missing quasinormal modes, and in doing that we also construct a generalization of the Gauss convergence criterion.

In a D-dimensional maximally symmetric spacetime we simplify the massless Dirac equation to two decoupled wavelike equations with effective potentials. Furthermore in D-dimensional Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild de Sitter black holes we note that for the massless Dirac field moving in the region exterior to the event horizon at least one of the effective potentials is not positive definite. Therefore the classical stability of these black holes against this field is not guaranteed. Here with the help of the S-deformation method, we state their classical stability against the massless Dirac fi…
A comparison between the deflection angles of massive and massless particles in the Shchwarzschild space-time and their consequences on black hole shadows
We consider the explicit asymptotic profile of massless Dirac fields on a Schwarzschild background. First, we prove for the spin $s=\pm \frac{1}{2}$ components of the Dirac field a uniform bound of a positive definite energy and an integrated local energy decay estimate from a symmetric hyperbolic wave system. Based on these estimates, we further show that these components have globally pointwise decay $fv^{-3/2-s}τ^{-5/2+s}$ as both an upper and a lower bound outside the black hole, with function $f$ finite and explicitly expressed in terms of the initial data and the coordinates. This establ…
In this paper we review and build on the common methods used to analyze null geodesics in Schwarzschild de Sitter space. We present a general technique which allows finding measurable intersection angles of null trajectories analytically, and as one of its applications we establish a general relativistic aberration relationship. The tools presented are used to analyze some standard setups of gravitational deflection of light and gain a clear understanding of the role that the cosmological constant, $Λ$, plays in gravitational lensing phenomena. Through reviewing some recent papers on the topic…
An analytic method is given for deriving the part of the retarded Green's function v(x,x') that contributes to the tail term in the radiation reaction force felt by a particle coupled to a massless minimally coupled scalar field. The method gives an expansion of v(x,x') for small separations of the points x, x' valid for an arbitrary static spherically symmetric spacetime. It is obtained by using a WKB approximation for the Euclidean Green's function for the massless minimally coupled scalar field and is equivalent to the DeWitt-Schwinger expansion for v(x,x'). The first few terms in this expa…
We provide a systematic and comprehensive derivation of the linearized dynamics of massive and partially massless spin-2 particles in a Schwarzschild (anti) de Sitter black hole background, in four and higher spacetime dimensions. In particular, we show how to obtain the quadratic actions for the propagating modes and recast the resulting equations of motion in a Schrödinger-like form. In the case of partially massless fields in Schwarzschild de Sitter spacetime, we study the isospectrality between modes of different parity. In particular, we prove isospectrality analytically for modes with mu…

We study the quantum corrections to the four-dimensional Schwarzschild Anti de Sitter black hole using effective field theory approach. We compute the quantum correction to Hawking temperature upto order $\mathcal{O}{(G^{2})}$ for a Schwarzschild AdS black hole when the emitted object is massless and massive. We use the expression of the modified horizon radius to compute the quantum corrected entropy upto order $\mathcal{O}{(G^{2})}$. Finally we compute quantum corrected thermodynamic parameters specific heat, free energy and pressure.
In this paper we pursue the study of linear perturbations around a Schwarzschild black hole in a generalized Einstein-Cartan theory of gravity, called torsion bigravity. This theory contains both massless and massive spin-2 excitations. Here we consider non spherically-symmetric perturbations with generic multipolarity $L \geq 1$. We extend the conclusion of linear stability, previously obtained for $L=0$ [Phys. Rev. D 104, 024032], to the generic $L \geq 1$ case. We prove that the mass $κ$ of the massive spin-2 excitation must be large enough, namely $κr_h > \sqrt{1+η}$, to avoid the presence…
We investigate the geodesic motion of massless test particles in the background of a noncommutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild black hole. The behaviour of effective potential is analysed in the equatorial plane and the possible motions of massless particles (i.e. photons) for different values of impact parameter are discussed accordingly. We have also calculated the frequency shift of photons in this spacetime. Further, the mass parameter of a non-commutative inspired Schwarzschild black hole is computed in terms of the measurable redshift of photons emitted by massive particles moving a…
We present the manifestly covariant Lagrangian of a massless polarized particle, that implies all dynamic and algebraic equations as the conditions of extreme of this variational problem. The model allows for minimal interaction with a gravitational field, leading to the equations, coinciding with Maxwell equations in the geometrical optics approximation. The model allows also a wide class of non minimal interactions, which suggests an alternative way to study the electromagnetic radiation beyond the leading order of geometrical optics. As a specific example, we construct a curvature-dependent…
We use the recently developed massive field approach to calculate the scalar self-force on a static particle in a Schwarzschild spacetime. In this approach the scalar self-force is obtained from the difference between the (massless) scalar field, and an auxiliary massive scalar field combined with a certain limiting process. By applying this approach to a static particle in Schwarzschild we show that the scalar self-force vanishes in this case. This result conforms with a previous analysis by Wiseman .
We find confluent Heun solutions to the radial equations of two Halilsoy-Badawi metrics. For the first metric, we studied the radial part of the massless Dirac equation and for the second case, we studied the radial part of the massless Klein-Gordon equation.
We obtain a new self-similar solution to the Einstein's equations in four-dimensions, representing the collapse of a spherically symmetric, minimally coupled, massless, scalar field. Depending on the value of certain parameters, this solution represents the formation of naked singularities and black holes. Since the black holes are identified as the Schwarzschild ones, one may naturally see how these black holes are produced as remnants of the scalar field collapse.
Finsler geometry is just riemannian geometry without the quadratic restriction[1]. In this paper, we study the motion of massive(non-zero rest mass) and massless particles for schwarzschild metric in finsler spacetime in the case of two dimensional Randers-Finsler space with unit positive flag curvature instead of two dimensional riemann sphere. We provide qualitative study of potential energy of particles at various distances near schwarzschild black hole and the results are then compared with schwarzschild metric in riemannian geometry. We will also describe the scattering of particles near …
We revisit the connection between trajectories of accelerated mirrors and spacetime metrics. We present the general (1+1)D effective metric that can be obtained with a fibre-optical analogue through the Kerr effect. Then we introduce a new connection between accelerated mirrors and the optical metric. In particular, we connect them for two specific trajectories: The first one is the black mirror that perfectly recreates the Schwarzchild spacetime. The second one is the Schwarzschild-Planck metric that is a regularized version of the Schwarzschild case. The regularization depends on a length sc…
Both massless light ray and objects with nonzero mass experience trajectory bending in a gravitational field. In this work the bending of trajectories of massive objects in a Schwarzschild spacetime and the corresponding gravitational lensing (GL) effects are studied. A particle sphere for Schwarzschild black hole (BH) is found with its radius a simple function of the particle velocity and proportional to the BH mass. A single master formula for both the massless and massive particle bending angle is found, in the form of an elliptic function depending only on the velocity and impact parameter…
We compute spectra, waveforms, angular distribution and total gravitational energy of the gravitiational radiation emitted during the radial infall of a massless particle into a Schwarzschild black hole. Our fully relativistic approach shows that (i) less than 50% of the total energy radiated to infinity is carried by quadrupole waves, (ii) the spectra is flat, and (iii) the zero frequency limit agrees extremely well with a prediction by Smarr. This process may be looked at as the limiting case of collisions between massive particles traveling at nearly the speed of light, by identifying the e…
We employ quantum kinetic theory to investigate local quantum physics in the background of spherically symmetric and neutral black holes formed through the gravitational collapse. For this purpose in mind, we derive and study the covariant Wigner distribution function $\mathcal{W}(x,p)$ near to and far away from the black-hole horizon. We find that the local density of the particle number is negative in the near-horizon region, while the entropy density is imaginary. These pose a question whether kinetic theory is applicable in the near-horizon region. We elaborate on that and propose a possib…
We study the dynamics of test particle and stability of circular geodesics in the gravitational field of a non-commutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild black hole spacetime (NCSBH). The coordinate time Lyapunov exponent ($λ_{c}$) is crucial to investigate the stability of equatorial circular geodesics of massive and massless test particles. The stability or instability of circular orbits are discussed by analysing the variation of Lyapunov exponent with radius of these orbits for different values of non-commutative parameter ($α$). In the case of null circular orbits, the instability expone…
In this paper, we study massless braneworld black holes as gravitational lenses. We find the weak and the strong deflection limits for the deflection angle, from which we calculate the positions and magnifications of the images. We compare the results obtained here with those corresponding to Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes, and also with those found in previous works for some other braneworld black holes.
We evaluate both the massless and the massive Dirac quasi-normal mode frequencies in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime using the WKB approximation. For the massless case, we find that, similar to those for the integral spin fields, the real parts of the frequencies increase with the angular momentum number $κ$, while the imaginary parts or the dampings increase with the mode number $n$ for fixed $κ$. For the massive case, the oscillation frequencies increase with the mass $m$ of the field, while the dampings decrease. Fields with higher masses will therefore decay more slowly.
We analyze the scattering of a planar monochromatic electromagnetic wave incident upon a Schwarzschild black hole. We obtain accurate numerical results from the partial wave method for the electromagnetic scattering cross section, and show that they are in excellent agreement with analytical approximations. The scattering of electromagnetic waves is compared with the scattering of scalar, spinor and gravitational waves. We present a unified picture of the scattering of all massless fields for the first time.
In this paper, we show that massless Dirac waves in the Schwarzschild geometry decay to zero at a rate $t^{-2λ}$, where $λ=1, 2,...$ is the angular momentum. Our technique is to use Chandrasekhar's separation of variables whereby the Dirac equations split into two sets of wave equations. For the first set, we show that the wave decays as $t^{-2λ}$. For the second set, in general, the solutions tend to some explicit profile at the rate $t^{-2λ}$. The decay rate of solutions of Dirac equations is achieved by showing that the coefficient of the explicit profile is exactly zero. The key ingredient…
We calculate the renormalized vacuum polarization and stress tensor for a massless, arbitrarily coupled scalar field in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state on the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole threaded by an infinte straight cosmic string. This calculation relies on a generalized Heine identity for non-integer Legendre functions which we derive without using specific properties of the Legendre functions themselves.
In part I we study quantum modified photon trajectories in a Schwarzschild blackhole spacetime. The photon vacuum polarization effect in curved spacetime leads to birefringence, i.e. the photon velocity becomes c+/-dc depending on its polarization. This velocity shift then results in modified photon trajectories. In this work we give an introduction to this quantum effect in relativity and we study its effects in Schwarzschild spacetime for critical orbits. Some key results are that the critical orbits are shifted depending on polarization and the event horizon remains fixed. In Part II we use…
For an extension of the previous work on gravitational lensing by massless braneworld black holes, we investigate their microlensing phenomena and shadows and discuss how to distinguish them from standard Schwarzschild black holes and Ellis wormholes. Microlensing is known as the phenomenon in which luminosity amplification appears when a bright object passes behind a black hole or another massive object. We find that, for the braneworld black hole as well as for the Ellis wormhole, there appears luminosity reduction just before and after the amplification. This means that observation of such …
We show that static sources coupled to a massless scalar field in Schwarzschild spacetime give rise to emission and absorption of zero-energy particles due to the presence of Hawking radiation. This is in complete analogy with the description of the bremsstrahlung by a uniformly accelerated charge from the coaccelerated observers' point of view. The response rate of the source is found to coincide with that in Minkowski spacetime as a function of its proper acceleration. This result may be viewed as restoration of the equivalence principle by the Hawking effect.
The analytic expression obtained in the preceding project for the massless conformal scalar propagator in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum state for small values of the Schwarzschild radial coordinate above $ r = 2M$ is analytically extended into the interior of the Schwarzschild black hole. The result of the analytical extension coincides with the exact propagator for a small range of values of the Schwarzschild radial coordinate below $ r = 2M$ and is an analytic expression which manifestly features its dependence on the background space-time geometry. This feature as well as the absence of any ass…
We construct Penrose diagrams for Schwarzschild spacetimes joined by massless shells of matter, in the process correcting minor flaws in the similar diagrams drawn by Dray and 't Hooft, and confirming their result that such shells generate a horizon shift. We then consider shells with negative energy density, showing that the horizon shift in this case allows for travel between the heretofore causally separated exterior regions of the Schwarzschild geometry. These drawing techniques are then used to investigate the properties of successive shells, joining multiple Schwarzschild regions. Again,…
We present heuristic arguments suggesting that if EM waves with wavelengths somewhat larger than the Schwarzschild radius of a black hole were fully absorbed by it, the second law of thermodynamics would be violated, under the Bekenstein interpretation of the area of a black hole as a measure of its entropy. Thus, entropy considerations make the well known fact that large wavelengths are only marginally absorbed by black holes, a natural consequence of thermodynamics. We also study numerically the ingoing radial propagation of a scalar field wave in a Schwarzschild metric, relaxing the standar…

The decay of massive scalar field in the Schwarzschild black hole background is investigated here by consideration its quasinormal spectrum. It has been proved that the so-called $quasi-resonant$ modes, which are arbitrary long living (purely real) modes, can exist only if the effective potential is not zero at least at one of the boundaries of the $R$-region. We have observed that the quasinormal spectrum exists for all field masses and proved both analytically and numerically that when $n \to \infty$ the real part of the frequencies approaches the same asymptotical value ($\ln3/(8πM)$) as in…
