In this paper, it is shown that a simple formulation of Economic Model Predictive Control can be used which possesses two features that are generally viewed as mutually exclusive, namely, a rather short prediction horizon (reachability-compatible) on one side, and the absence of final constraint on the other side. The result holds for discrete-time models that are originated from continuous-time models by means of discretization. Practical stability at a small neighborhood of the optimal unknown steady-state pair is shown when some parameters increase and sampling time decreases. A commonly used example is given to illustrate the result.
In this paper, we propose a data-driven economic model predictive control (EMPC) scheme with generalized terminal constraint to control an unknown linear time-invariant system. Our scheme is based on the Fundamental Lemma to predict future system trajectories using a persistently exciting input-output trajectory. The control objective is to minimize an economic cost objective. By employing a generalized terminal constraint with artificial equilibrium, the scheme does not require prior knowledge of the optimal equilibrium. We prove that the asymptotic average performance of the closed-loop syst…
In this paper, we investigate system theoretic properties of transient average constrained economic model predictive control (MPC) without terminal constraints. We show that the optimal open-loop solution passes by the optimal steady-state for consecutive time instants. Using this turnpike property and suitable controllability conditions, we provide closed-loop performance bounds. Furthermore, stability is proved by combining the rotated value function with an input-to-state (ISS) Lyapunov function of an extended state related to the transient average constraints. The results are illustrated w…
This chapter compares different formulations for Economic nonlinear Model Predictive Control (EMPC) which are all based on an established dissipativity assumption on the underlying Optimal Control Problem (OCP). This includes schemes with and without stabilizing terminal constraints, respectively, or with stabilizing terminal costs. We recall that a recently proposed approach based on gradient correcting terminal penalties implies a terminal constraint on the adjoints of the OCP. We analyze the feasibility implications of these dual/adjoint terminal constraints and we compare our findings to a…
In this paper, a novel tube-based economic Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme for uncertain systems that uses neither terminal costs nor terminal constraints is investigated. We show that the results from the undisturbed case can be extended to systems with bounded disturbances by using similar turnpike arguments and a properly modified stage cost. We prove robust guarantees on the closed-loop performance, convergence, and stability under suitable dissipativity and controllability conditions and discuss them in a numerical example.
In this paper, a novel distributed model predictive control (MPC) scheme with asymmetric adaptive terminal sets is developed for the regulation of large-scale systems with a distributed structure. Similar to typical MPC schemes, a structured Lyapunov matrix and a distributed terminal controller, respecting the distributed structure of the system, are computed offline. However, in this scheme, a distributed positively invariant terminal set is computed online and updated at each time instant taking into consideration the current state of the system. In particular, we consider ellipsoidal termin…
A distributed model predictive control scheme is developed for tracking piecewise constant references where the terminal set is reconfigured online, whereas the terminal controller is computed offline. Unlike many standard existing schemes, this scheme yields large feasible regions without performing offline centralized computations. Although the resulting optimal control problem (OCP) is a semidefinite program (SDP), an SDP scalability method based on diagonal dominance is used to approximate the derived SDP by a second-order cone program. The OCPs of the proposed scheme and its approximation…
Various efforts have been devoted to developing stabilizing distributed Model Predictive Control (MPC) schemes for tracking piecewise constant references. In these schemes, terminal sets are usually computed offline and used in the MPC online phase to guarantee recursive feasibility and asymptotic stability. Maximal invariant terminal sets do not necessarily respect the distributed structure of the network, hindering the distributed implementation of the controller. On the other hand, ellipsoidal terminal sets respect the distributed structure, but may lead to conservative schemes. In this pap…
This chapter provides a concise survey on different dissipativity conditions that have appeared in the literature on economic model predictive control and discusses their decisive role in this context.
Stability under model predictive control (MPC) schemes is frequently ensured by terminal ingredients. Employing a (control) Lyapunov function as the terminal cost constitutes a common choice. Learning-based methods may be used to construct the terminal cost by relating it to, for instance, an infinite-horizon optimal control problem in which the optimal cost is a Lyapunov function. Value iteration, an approximate dynamic programming (ADP) approach, refers to one particular cost approximation technique. In this work, we merge the results of terminally unconstrained predictive control and approx…
This paper presents an economic model predictive controller, under the assumption that the only measurable signal of the plant is the economic cost to be minimized. In order to forecast the evolution of this economic cost for a given input trajectory, a prediction model with a NARX structure, the so-called oracle, is proposed. Sufficient conditions to ensure the existence of such oracle are studied, proving that it can be derived for a general nonlinear system if the economic cost function is a Morse function. Based on this oracle, economic model predictive controllers are proposed, and their …

This paper proposes a hybrid Gaussian process (GP) approach to robust economic model predictive control under unknown future disturbances in order to reduce the conservatism of the controller. The proposed hybrid GP is a combination of two well-known methods, namely, kernel composition and nonlinear auto-regressive. A switching mechanism is employed to select one of these methods for disturbance prediction after analyzing the prediction outcomes. The hybrid GP is intended to detect not only patterns but also unexpected behaviors in the unknown disturbances by using past disturbance measurement…
This paper deals with the control of pumps in large-scale water distribution networks with the aim of minimizing economic costs while satisfying operational constraints. Finding a control algorithm in combination with a model that can be applied in real-time is a challenging problem due to the nonlinearities presented by the pipes and the network sizes. We propose a predictive control algorithm with a periodic horizon. The method provides a way for the economic operation of large water networks with a small linear model. Economic Predictive control with a periodic horizon and a terminal state …
This paper introduces a novel concept for addressing non-convexity in the cost functions of distributed economic model predictive control (DEMPC) systems. Specifically, the proposed algorithm enables agents to self-organize into a hierarchy which determines the order in which control decisions are made. This concept is based on the formation of social hierarchies in nature. An additional feature of the algorithm is that it does not require stationary set-points that are known a priori. Rather, agents negotiate these targets in a truly distributed and scalable manner. Upon providing a detailed …
This paper presents a distributed learning model predictive control (DLMPC) scheme for distributed linear time invariant systems with coupled dynamics and state constraints. The proposed solution method is based on an online distributed optimization scheme with nearest-neighbor communication. If the control task is iterative and data from previous feasible iterations are available, local data are exploited by the subsystems in order to construct the local terminal set and terminal cost, which guarantee recursive feasibility and asymptotic stability, as well as performance improvement over iter…
In this work, the control of snake robot locomotion via economic model predictive control (MPC) is studied. Only very few examples of applications of MPC to snake robots exist and rigorous proofs for recursive feasibility and convergence are missing. We propose an economic MPC algorithm that maximizes the robot's forward velocity and integrates the choice of the gait pattern into the closed loop. We show recursive feasibility of the MPC optimization problem, where some of the developed techniques are also applicable for the analysis of a more general class of system. Besides, we provide perfor…
In this paper, we present a quasi infinite horizon nonlinear model predictive control (MPC) scheme for tracking of generic reference trajectories. This scheme is applicable to nonlinear systems, which are locally incrementally stabilizable. For such systems, we provide a reference generic offline procedure to compute an incrementally stabilizing feedback with a continuously parameterized quadratic quasi infinite horizon terminal cost. As a result we get a nonlinear reference tracking MPC scheme with a valid terminal cost for general reachable reference trajectories without increasing the onlin…
This paper proposes a fuel-economical distributed model predictive control design (Eco-DMPC) for a homogenous heavy-duty truck platoon. The proposed control strategy integrates a fuel-optimal control strategy for the leader truck with a distributed formation control for the following trucks in the heavy-duty truck platoon. The fuel-optimal control strategy is implemented by a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) design with an instantaneous fuel consumption model. The proposed fuel-optimal control strategy utilizes the preview information of the preceding traffic to achieve the fuel-econo…
In this paper, we provide non-averaged and transient performance guarantees for recently developed, tube-based robust economic model predictive control (MPC) schemes. In particular, we consider both tube-based MPC schemes with and without terminal conditions. We show that the closed-loop performance obtained by applying such MPC schemes is approximately optimal when evaluated both on finite and infinite time horizons. These performance bounds are similar to those derived previously for nominal economic MPC. The theoretical results are discussed in a numerical example.
Optimizing pump operations is a challenging task for real-time management of water distribution systems (WDSs). With suitable pump scheduling, pumping costs can be significantly reduced. In this research, a novel economic model predictive control (EMPC) framework for real-time management of WDSs is proposed. Optimal pump operations are selected based on predicted system behavior over a receding time horizon with the aim to minimize the total pumping energy cost. Time-varying electricity tariffs are considered while all the required water demands are satisfied. The novelty of this framework is …
This paper implements a recently developed social hierarchy-based distributed economic model predictive control (DEMPC) algorithm in floating offshore wind farms for the purpose of power maximization. The controller achieves this objective using the concept of yaw and induction-based turbine repositioning (YITuR), which minimizes the overlap areas between adjacent floating wind turbine rotors in real-time to minimize the wake effect. Floating wind farm dynamics and performance are predicted numerically using FOWFSim-Dyn. To ensure fast decision-making by the DEMPC algorithm, feed-forward neura…
The dynamics-aware economic dispatch (DED) problem embeds low-level generator dynamics and operational constraints to enable near real-time scheduling of generation units in a power network. DED produces a more dynamic supervisory control policy than traditional economic dispatch (T-ED) that leads to reduced overall generation costs. However, the incorporation of differential equations that govern the system dynamics makes DED an optimization problem that is computationally prohibitive to solve. In this work, we present a new data-driven approach based on differentiable programming to efficien…
We propose a reference-free learning model predictive controller for periodic repetitive tasks. We consider a problem in which dynamics, constraints and stage cost are periodically time-varying. The controller uses the closed-loop data to construct a time-varying terminal set and a time-varying terminal cost. We show that the proposed strategy in closed-loop with linear and nonlinear systems guarantees recursive constraints satisfaction, non-increasing open-loop cost, and that the open-loop and closed-loop cost are the same at convergence. Simulations are presented for different repetitive tas…
This paper presents a new concept of controlled dissipativity as an extension of the standard dissipativity property to systems with parameter-varying storage functions under the framework of economic model predictive control (EMPC). Based on this concept, two EMPC controllers, integrated with the dissipation inequality constraints rendering the storage function parameters as decision variables, are formulated and the associated recursive feasibility is ensured. Then, the asymptotic convergence to an optimal equilibrium in closed-loop, without requiring the standard dissipativity assumption, i…
This paper investigates the problem of energy-optimal control for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). To improve the endurance of AUVs, we propose a novel energy-optimal control scheme based on the economic model predictive control (MPC) framework. We first formulate a cost function that computes the energy spent for vehicle operation over a finite-time prediction horizon. Then, to account for the energy consumption beyond the prediction horizon, a terminal cost that approximates the energy to reach the goal (energy-to-go) is incorporated into the MPC cost function.
