This paper proposes a hybrid Gaussian process (GP) approach to robust economic model predictive control under unknown future disturbances in order to reduce the conservatism of the controller. The proposed hybrid GP is a combination of two well-known methods, namely, kernel composition and nonlinear auto-regressive. A switching mechanism is employed to select one of these methods for disturbance prediction after analyzing the prediction outcomes. The hybrid GP is intended to detect not only patterns but also unexpected behaviors in the unknown disturbances by using past disturbance measurements. \textcolor{black}{A novel forgetting factor concept is also utilized in the hybrid GP, giving less weight to older measurements, in order to increase prediction accuracy based on recent disturbances values.} The detected disturbance information is used to reduce prediction uncertainty in economic model predictive controllers systematically. The simulation results show that the proposed method can improve the overall performance of an economic model predictive controller compared to other GP-based methods in cases when disturbances have discernible patterns.
This chapter provides a concise survey on different dissipativity conditions that have appeared in the literature on economic model predictive control and discusses their decisive role in this context.
This paper presents an economic model predictive controller, under the assumption that the only measurable signal of the plant is the economic cost to be minimized. In order to forecast the evolution of this economic cost for a given input trajectory, a prediction model with a NARX structure, the so-called oracle, is proposed. Sufficient conditions to ensure the existence of such oracle are studied, proving that it can be derived for a general nonlinear system if the economic cost function is a Morse function. Based on this oracle, economic model predictive controllers are proposed, and their …
This paper deals with the control of pumps in large-scale water distribution networks with the aim of minimizing economic costs while satisfying operational constraints. Finding a control algorithm in combination with a model that can be applied in real-time is a challenging problem due to the nonlinearities presented by the pipes and the network sizes. We propose a predictive control algorithm with a periodic horizon. The method provides a way for the economic operation of large water networks with a small linear model. Economic Predictive control with a periodic horizon and a terminal state …
This paper introduces a novel concept for addressing non-convexity in the cost functions of distributed economic model predictive control (DEMPC) systems. Specifically, the proposed algorithm enables agents to self-organize into a hierarchy which determines the order in which control decisions are made. This concept is based on the formation of social hierarchies in nature. An additional feature of the algorithm is that it does not require stationary set-points that are known a priori. Rather, agents negotiate these targets in a truly distributed and scalable manner. Upon providing a detailed …
In this paper, it is shown that a simple formulation of Economic Model Predictive Control can be used which possesses two features that are generally viewed as mutually exclusive, namely, a rather short prediction horizon (reachability-compatible) on one side, and the absence of final constraint on the other side. The result holds for discrete-time models that are originated from continuous-time models by means of discretization. Practical stability at a small neighborhood of the optimal unknown steady-state pair is shown when some parameters increase and sampling time decreases. A commonly us…
In this work, the control of snake robot locomotion via economic model predictive control (MPC) is studied. Only very few examples of applications of MPC to snake robots exist and rigorous proofs for recursive feasibility and convergence are missing. We propose an economic MPC algorithm that maximizes the robot's forward velocity and integrates the choice of the gait pattern into the closed loop. We show recursive feasibility of the MPC optimization problem, where some of the developed techniques are also applicable for the analysis of a more general class of system. Besides, we provide perfor…
In this paper, a novel tube-based economic Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme for uncertain systems that uses neither terminal costs nor terminal constraints is investigated. We show that the results from the undisturbed case can be extended to systems with bounded disturbances by using similar turnpike arguments and a properly modified stage cost. We prove robust guarantees on the closed-loop performance, convergence, and stability under suitable dissipativity and controllability conditions and discuss them in a numerical example.
In this paper, we provide non-averaged and transient performance guarantees for recently developed, tube-based robust economic model predictive control (MPC) schemes. In particular, we consider both tube-based MPC schemes with and without terminal conditions. We show that the closed-loop performance obtained by applying such MPC schemes is approximately optimal when evaluated both on finite and infinite time horizons. These performance bounds are similar to those derived previously for nominal economic MPC. The theoretical results are discussed in a numerical example.
This paper proposes a fuel-economical distributed model predictive control design (Eco-DMPC) for a homogenous heavy-duty truck platoon. The proposed control strategy integrates a fuel-optimal control strategy for the leader truck with a distributed formation control for the following trucks in the heavy-duty truck platoon. The fuel-optimal control strategy is implemented by a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) design with an instantaneous fuel consumption model. The proposed fuel-optimal control strategy utilizes the preview information of the preceding traffic to achieve the fuel-econo…
Optimizing pump operations is a challenging task for real-time management of water distribution systems (WDSs). With suitable pump scheduling, pumping costs can be significantly reduced. In this research, a novel economic model predictive control (EMPC) framework for real-time management of WDSs is proposed. Optimal pump operations are selected based on predicted system behavior over a receding time horizon with the aim to minimize the total pumping energy cost. Time-varying electricity tariffs are considered while all the required water demands are satisfied. The novelty of this framework is …
This paper implements a recently developed social hierarchy-based distributed economic model predictive control (DEMPC) algorithm in floating offshore wind farms for the purpose of power maximization. The controller achieves this objective using the concept of yaw and induction-based turbine repositioning (YITuR), which minimizes the overlap areas between adjacent floating wind turbine rotors in real-time to minimize the wake effect. Floating wind farm dynamics and performance are predicted numerically using FOWFSim-Dyn. To ensure fast decision-making by the DEMPC algorithm, feed-forward neura…
The dynamics-aware economic dispatch (DED) problem embeds low-level generator dynamics and operational constraints to enable near real-time scheduling of generation units in a power network. DED produces a more dynamic supervisory control policy than traditional economic dispatch (T-ED) that leads to reduced overall generation costs. However, the incorporation of differential equations that govern the system dynamics makes DED an optimization problem that is computationally prohibitive to solve. In this work, we present a new data-driven approach based on differentiable programming to efficien…
This paper investigates the problem of energy-optimal control for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). To improve the endurance of AUVs, we propose a novel energy-optimal control scheme based on the economic model predictive control (MPC) framework. We first formulate a cost function that computes the energy spent for vehicle operation over a finite-time prediction horizon. Then, to account for the energy consumption beyond the prediction horizon, a terminal cost that approximates the energy to reach the goal (energy-to-go) is incorporated into the MPC cost function.
This paper presents a robust economic model predictive control (EMPC) formulation with zone tracking for discrete-time uncertain nonlinear systems. The proposed design ensures that the zone tracking objective is achieved in finite steps and at the same time optimizes the economic performance. In the proposed design, instead of tracking the original target zone, a robust control invariant set within the target zone is determined and is used as the actual zone tracked in the proposed EMPC. This approach ensures that the zone tracking objective is achieved within finite steps and once the zone tr…
In this work, a composite economic model predictive control (CEMPC) is proposed for the optimal operation of a stand-alone integrated energy system (IES). Time-scale multiplicity exists in IESs dynamics is taken into account and addressed using multi-time-scale decomposition. The entire IES is decomposed into three reduced-order subsystems with slow, medium, and fast dynamics. Subsequently, the CEMPC, which includes slow economic model predictive control (EMPC), medium EMPC and fast EMPC, is developed. The EMPCs communicate with each other to ensure consistency in decision-making. In the slow …
This paper presents a new concept of controlled dissipativity as an extension of the standard dissipativity property to systems with parameter-varying storage functions under the framework of economic model predictive control (EMPC). Based on this concept, two EMPC controllers, integrated with the dissipation inequality constraints rendering the storage function parameters as decision variables, are formulated and the associated recursive feasibility is ensured. Then, the asymptotic convergence to an optimal equilibrium in closed-loop, without requiring the standard dissipativity assumption, i…

The electricity distribution system is fundamentally changing due to the widespread adoption of variable renewable energy resources (VREs), network-enabled digital physical devices, and active consumer engagement. VREs are uncertain and intermittent in nature and pose various technical challenges to power systems control and operations thus limiting their penetration. Engaging the demand-side with control structures that leverage the benefits of integral social and retail market engagement from individual electricity consumers through active community-level coordination serves as a control lev…

In this paper, we consider the problem of periodic optimal control of nonlinear systems subject to online changing and periodically time-varying economic performance measures using model predictive control (MPC). The proposed economic MPC scheme uses an online optimized artificial periodic orbit to ensure recursive feasibility and constraint satisfaction despite unpredictable changes in the economic performance index. We demonstrate that the direct extension of existing methods to periodic orbits does not necessarily yield the desirable closed-loop economic performance. Instead, we carefully r…
The current trend in the evolution of wind turbines is to increase their rotor size in order to capture more power. This leads to taller, slender and more flexible towers, which thus experience higher dynamical loads due to the turbine rotation and environmental factors. It is hence compelling to deploy advanced control methods that can dynamically counteract such loads, especially at tower positions that are more prone to develop cracks or corrosion damages. Still, to the best of the authors' knowledge, little to no attention has been paid in the literature to load mitigation at multiple towe…
A non-centralized model predictive control (MPC) scheme for solving an economic dispatch problem of electrical networks is proposed in this paper. The scheme consists of two parts. The first part is an event-triggered repartitioning method that splits the network into a fixed number of non-overlapping sub-systems {(microgrids)}. The objective of the repartitioning procedure is to obtain self-sufficient microgrids, i.e., those that can meet their local loads using their own generation units. However, since the algorithm does not guarantee that all the resulting microgrids are self-sufficient, t…
Islanded microgrids powered by renewable energy require costly energy storage systems due to the uncontrollable generators. Energy storage needs are amplified when load and generation are misaligned on hourly, monthly, or seasonal timescales. Diversification of both loads and generation can smooth out such mismatches. The ideal type of battery to smooth out remaining generation deficits will depend on the duration(s) that energy is stored. This study presents a controls co-design approach to design an islanded microgrid, showing the benefit of hybridizing tidal and solar generation and hybridi…
