Optomechanics and electromechanics have made it possible to prepare macroscopic mechanical oscillators in their quantum ground states, in quadrature squeezed states, and in entangled states of motion. In addition to coaxing ever larger and more tangible objects into a regime of quantum behavior, this new capability has encouraged ideas of using mechanical oscillators in the processing and communication of quantum information and as precision force sensors operating beyond the standard quantum limit. But the effectively linear interaction between motion and light or electricity precludes access to the broader class of quantum states of motion, such as cat states or energy squeezed states. Indeed, early optomechanical proposals noted the possibility to escape this restriction by creating strong quadratic coupling of motion to light. Although there have been experimental demonstrations of quadratically coupled optomechanical systems, these have not yet accessed nonclassical states of motion. Here we create nonclassical states by quadratically coupling motion to the energy levels of a Cooper-pair box (CPB) qubit. By monitoring the qubit's transition frequency, we detect the oscillator's phonon distribution rather than its position. Through microwave frequency drives that change both the state of the oscillator and qubit, we then dissipatively stabilize the oscillator in a state with a large mean phonon number of 43 and sub-Poissonian number fluctuations of approximately 3. In this energy squeezed state we observe a striking feature of the quadratic coupling: the recoil of the mechanical oscillator caused by qubit transitions, closely analogous to the vibronic transitions in molecules.
We experimentally examine the nonclassical character of a class of non-Gaussian states known as phase-diffused squeezed states. These states may show no squeezing effect at all, and therefore provide an interesting example to test nonclassicality criteria. The characteristic function of the Glauber-Sudarshan representation (P function) proves to be a powerful tool to detect nonclassicality. Using this criterion we find that phase-diffused squeezed states are always nonclassical, even if the squeezing effect vanishes. Testing other criteria of nonclassicality based on higher-order squeezing and…
Higher order nonclassical properties of fields propagating through a codirectional asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler which is prepared by combining a linear wave guide and a nonlinear (quadratic) wave guide operated by second harmonic generation are studied. A completely quantum mechanical description is used here to describe the system. Closed form analytic solutions of Heisenberg's equations of motion for various modes are used to show the existence of higher order antibunching, higher order squeezing, higher order two-mode and multi-mode entanglement in the asymmetric nonlinear optical c…
In this paper, we follow our presented model in J. Opt. Soc. Am. B {\bf 30}, 1109--1117 (2013), in which the interaction between a $Λ$-type three-level atom and a quantized two-mode radiation field in a cavity in the presence of nonlinearities is studied. After giving a brief review on the procedure of obtaining the state vector of the atom-field system, some further interesting and important physical features (which are of particular interest in the quantum optics field of research) of the whole system state, i.e., the number-phase entropic uncertainty relation (based on the two-mode Pegg-Bar…
We investigate nonclassical properties of the output of a Bose-Einstein condensate in Milburn's model of intrinsic decoherence. It is shown that the squeezing property of the atom laser is suppressed due to decoherence. Nevertheless, if some very special conditions were satisfied, the squeezing properties of atom laser could be robust against the decoherence.
A completely quantum description of Raman process is used to investigate the nonclassical properties of the modes in the stimulated, spontaneous and partially spontaneous Raman process. Both coherent scattering (where all the initial modes are coherent) and chaotic scattering (where initial phonon mode is chaotic and all the other modes are coherent) are studied. Nonclassical character of Raman process is observed by means of intermodal entanglement, single mode and intermodal squeezing of vacuum fluctuations, sub-shot noise and wave variances. Joint photon-phonon number and integrated-intensi…
The transient quantum statistical properties of the atoms and molecules in an atom-molecule BEC system are investigated by obtaining a third-order perturbative solution of the Heisenberg's equations of motion corresponding to the Hamiltonian of an atom-molecule BEC system where two atoms can collide to form a molecule. Time dependent quantities like two boson correlation, entanglement, squeezing, antibunching, etc., are computed and their properties are compared. It is established that atom-molecule BEC system is highly nonclassical as lower-order and higher-order squeezing and antibunching in…
We construct even and odd nonlinear coherent states of a parametric oscillator and examine their nonclassical properties. It has been shown that these superpositions exhibit squeezing and photon antibunching which change with time.
k-Component q-deformed charge coherent states are constructed, their (over)completeness proved and their generation explored. The q-deformed charge coherent states and the even (odd) q-deformed charge coherent states are the two special cases of them as k becomes 1 and 2, respectively. A D-algebra realization of the SU$_q$(1,1) generators is given in terms of them. Their nonclassical properties are studied and it is shown that for $k\geq3$, they exhibit two-mode q-antibunching, but neither SU$_q$(1,1) squeezing, nor one- or two-mode q-squeezing.
Based on the definition of coherent states for continuous spectra and analogous to photon added coherent states for discrete spectra, we introduce the excited coherent states for continuous spectra. It is shown that, the main axioms of Gazeau-Klauder coherent states will be satisfied, properly. Nonclassical properties and quantum statistics of coherent states, as well as the introduced excited coherent states are discussed. In particular, through the study of quadrature squeezing and amplitude squared squeezing, it will be observed that both classes of the above states can be classified in the…
Several nonclassical effects displayed by wave packets subject to generic nonlinear Hamiltonians can be identified and assessed directly from tomograms without attempting to reconstruct the Wigner function or the density matrix explicitly. We have demonstrated this for both single-mode and bipartite systems. We have shown that a wide spectrum of effects such as the revival phenomena, quadrature squeezing and Hong-Mandel and Hillery type higher-order squeezing in both the single-mode system and the double-well Bose-Einstein condensate can be obtained from appropriate tomograms in a straightforw…
We analyze homodyne detection of macroscopically bright multimode nonclassical states of light and propose their application in quantum communication. We observe that the homodyne detection is sensitive to a mode-matching of the bright light to the highly intense local oscillator. Unmatched bright modes of light result in additional noise which technically limits detection of Gaussian entanglement at macroscopic level. When the mode-matching is sufficient, we show that multimode quantum key distribution with bright beams is feasible. It finally merges the quantum communication with classical o…
Considering the concept of "{\it nonlinear coherent states}", we will study the interference effects by introducing the {\it "superposition of two classes of nonlinear coherent states"} which are $\fracπ{2}$ out of phase. The formalism has then been applied to a few physical systems as "harmonious states", "SU(1,1) coherent states" and "the center of mass motion of trapped ion". Finally, the nonclassical properties such as sub-Poissonian statistics, quadrature squeezing, amplitude-squared squeezing and Wigner distribution function of the superposed states have been investigated, numerically. E…
The thesis showcases the importance of tomograms in quantifying nonclassical effects such as wavepacket revivals, squeezing, and quantum entanglement in continuous-variable, hybrid quantum, and qubit systems. This approach avoids error-prone statistical methods used in state reconstruction procedures. The performance of many bipartite entanglement indicators obtained directly from tomograms is examined both in the case of known quantum states and experimental data reported in the literature.
We investigate the spatial overlap of nonclassical ultrashort light pulses produced by self-phase modulation effect in electronic Kerr media and its relevance in the formation of polarization-squeezed states of light. The light polarization is treated in terms of four quantum Stokes parameters whose spectra of quantum fluctuations are investigated. We show that the frequency at which the suppression of quantum fluctuations of Stokes parameters is the greatest can be controlled by adjusting the linear phase difference between pulses. By varying the intensity of one pulse one can suppress effect…
Squeezing experiments which are capable of creating a minimum uncertainty state during the nonlinear process, for example optical parametric amplification, are commonly used to produce light far below the quantum noise limit. This report presents a method with which one can characterize this minimum uncertainty state and gain valuable knowledge of the experimental setup.
Even and odd q-deformed charge coherent states are constructed, their (over)completeness proved and their generation explored. A $D$-algebra realization of the SU$_q$(1,1) generators is given in terms of them. They are shown to exhibit SU$_q$(1,1) squeezing and two-mode $q$-antibunching, but neither one-mode, nor two-mode $q$-squeezing.
We design and demonstrate on-chip homodyne detection operating in the quantum regime, i.e. able to detect genuine nonclassical features. Our setup exploits a glass-integrated homodyne analyzer (IHA) entirely fabricated by femtosecond laser micromachining. The IHA incorporates on the same chip a balanced waveguide beam splitter and a thermo-optic phase shifter, allowing us to record homodyne traces at different phases and to perform reliable quantum state tomography. In particular, we show that the IHA allows for the detection of nonclassical features of continuous-variable quantum states, such…
We make a comparative study of quadrature squeezing, photon-number distribution and Wigner function in a decayed quantum system. Specifically, for a field mode prepared initially in cat states interacting with a zero-temperature environment, we show that the rate of reduction of the nonclassical effects in this system is proportional to the occurrence of the decoherence process.
Hybrid architectures integrating mesoscopic electronic conductors with resonant microwave cavities have a great potential for investigating unexplored regimes of electron-photon coupling. In this context, producing nonclassical squeezed light is a key step towards quantum communication with scalable solid-state devices. Here we show that parametric driving of the electronic conductor induces a squeezed steady state in the cavity. We find that squeezing properties of the cavity are essentially determined by the electronic noise correlators of the quantum conductor. In the case of a tunnel junct…
The preparation of nonclassical states of mechanical motion conclusively proves that control over such motion has reached the quantum level. We investigate ways to achieve nonclassical states of macroscopic mechanical oscillators, particularly levitated nanoparticles. We analyze the possibility of the conditional squeezing of the levitated particle induced by the homodyne detection of light in a pulsed optomechanical setup within the resolved sideband regime. We focus on the regimes that are experimentally relevant for the levitated systems where the ground-state cooling is not achievable and …
We derive simple practical procedures revealing the quantum behavior of angular momentum variables by the violation of classical upper bounds on the statistics. Data analysis is minimum and definite conclusions are obtained without evaluation of moments, or any other more sophisticated procedures. These nonclassical tests are very general and independent of other typical quantum signatures of nonclassical behavior such as sub-Poissonian statistics, squeezing, or oscillatory statistics, being insensitive to the nonclassical behavior displayed by other variables.
The (over)completeness of even and odd nonlinear charge coherent states is proved and their generation explored. They are demonstrated to be generalized entangled nonlinear coherent states. A $D$-algebra realization of the SU$_f$(1,1) generators is given in terms of them. They are shown to exhibit SU$_f$(1,1) squeezing and two-mode $f$-antibunching for some particular types of $f$-nonlinearity, but neither one-mode nor two-mode $f$-squeezing.
Various nonclassical and quantum phase properties of photon added then subtracted displaced Fock state have been examined systematically and rigorously. Higher-order moments of the relevant bosonic operators are computed to test the nonclassicality of the state of interest, which reduces to various quantum states (having applications in quantum optics, metrology and information processing) in different limits ranging from the coherent (classical) state to the Fock (most nonclassical) states. The nonclassical features are discussed using Klyshko's, Vogel's, and Agarwal-Tara's criteria as well a…
We construct a generalized version of the photon-subtracted squeezed vacuum states (PSSVS), which can be utilized to construct the same for nonlinear, deformed and any usual quantum mechanical models beyond the harmonic oscillator. We apply our general framework to trigonometric Pöschl-Teller potential and show that our method works accurately and produces a proper nonclassical state. We analyze the nonclassicality of the state using three different approaches, namely, quadrature squeezing, photon number squeezing and Wigner function and indicate how the standard definitions of those three tec…
Levitated particles are a promising platform for precision sensing of external perturbations and probing the boundary between quantum and classical worlds. A critical obstacle for these applications is the difficulty of generating nonclassical states of motion which have not been realized so far. Here, we show that strong squeezing of the motion of a levitated particle below the vacuum level is feasible with available experimental parameters. Using suitable modulation of the trapping potential (which is impossible with clamped mechanical resonators) and coherent scattering of trapping photons …
Practically applicable criteria for the nonclassicality of quantum states are formulated in terms of different types of moments. For this purpose the moments of the creation and annihilation operators, of two quadratures, and of a quadrature and the photon number operator turn out to be useful. It is shown that all the required moments can be determined by homodyne correlation measurements. An example of a nonclassical effect that is easily characterized by our methods is amplitude-squared squeezing.
We present several examples where prominent quantum properties are transferred from a microscopic superposition to thermal states at high temperatures. Our work is motivated by an analogy of Schrodinger's cat paradox, where the state corresponding to the virtual cat is a mixed thermal state with a large average photon number. Remarkably, quantum entanglement can be produced between thermal states with nearly the maximum Bell-inequality violation even when the temperatures of both modes approach infinity.
We study nonclassical correlations beyond entanglement in a family of two-mode non-Gaussian states which represent the continuous-variable counterpart of two-qubit Werner states. We evaluate quantum discord and other quantumness measures obtaining exact analytical results in special instances, and upper and lower bounds in the general case. Non-Gaussian measurements such as photon counting are in general necessary to solve the optimization in the definition of quantum discord, whereas Gaussian measurements are strictly suboptimal for the considered states. The gap between Gaussian and optimal …
Nonclassical phenomena of quantum mechanics such as anticorrelation and photonic de Broglie waves (PBWs) have been recently understood as a special case of coherence optics with a particular phase relation between orthogonal bases composing a classical system. Such a macroscopic understanding of nonclassical features has also been confirmed experimentally for a coherence version of PBWs in a doubly-coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Here, a multi-coupled MZI system is analyzed and discussed to obtain a general understanding of the nonclassical feature using tensor products of binary ba…
We consider macroscopic correlations in a bipartite system consisting of 2N particles described by a generalised probabilistic theory. In particular, we discuss a case of N PR-boxes shared between two parties. We characterise macroscopic measurements as collective measurements of the same property on all the boxes in the same region. Such measurements are assumed to reveal only the average value of the measured collective property. We show that for two measurements per observer and N greater or equal 2 there always exist a joint probability distribution explaining all observable data and there…
A recently introduced hierarchy of states of a single mode quantised radiation field is examined for the case of centered Guassian Wigner distributions. It is found that the onset of squeezing among such states signals the transition to the strongly nonclassical regime. Interesting consequences for the photon number distribution, and explicit representations for them, are presented.
In this paper, we will present a general formalism for constructing the nonlinear charge coherent states which in special case lead to the standard charge coher- ent states. The suQ(1;1) algebra as a nonlinear deformed algebra realization of the introduced states is established. In addition, the corresponding even and odd nonlinear charge coherent states have been also introduced. The formalism has the potentiality to be applied to systems either with known "nonlinearity function" f(n) or solvable quantum system with known "discrete non-degenerate spectrum" en. As some physical appearances, a …
A pair of conjugate observables, such as the quadrature amplitudes of harmonic motion, have fundamental fluctuations which are bound by the Heisenberg uncertainty relation. However, in a squeezed quantum state, fluctuations of a quantity can be reduced below the standard quantum limit, at the cost of increased fluctuations of the conjugate variable. Here we prepare a nearly macroscopic moving body, realized as a micromechanical resonator, in a squeezed quantum state. We obtain squeezing of one quadrature amplitude $1.1 \pm 0.4$ dB below the standard quantum limit, thus achieving a long-standin…
The effect of two quantum state engineering processes that can be used to burn hole at vacuum in the photon number distribution of quantum states of radiation field are compared using various witnesses of lower- and higher-order nonclassicality as well as a measure of nonclassicality. Specifically, the witnesses of nonclassical properties due to the effect of vacuum state filtration and a single photon addition on an even coherent state, binomial state and Kerr state are investigated using the criteria of lower- and higher-order antibunching, squeezing and sub-Poissonian photon statistics. Fur…
Generation of mechanical squeezing has attracted a lot of interest for its nonclassical properties, applications in quantum information, and high-sensitivity measurement. Here we propose a detuning-switched method that can rapidly generate strong and stationary mechanical squeezing. The pulsed driving can dynamically transpose the optomechanical coupling into a linear optical force and maintain an effective mechanical frequency, which can introduce strong mechanical squeezing in a short time. Moreover, we show the obtained strong mechanical squeezing can be frozen by increasing the pulse inter…
Following the lines of the recent papers [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 44, 495201 (2012); Eur. Phys. J. D 67, 179 (2013)], we construct here a new class of generalized coherent states related to the Landau levels, which can be used as the finite Fock subspaces for the representation of the $su(2)$ Lie algebra. We establish the relationship between them and the deformed truncated coherent states. We have, also, shown that they satisfy the resolution of the identity property through a positive definite measures on the complex plane. Their nonclassical and quantum statistical properties such as quadr…
It is well-known that the precision of a phase measurement with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer employing strong (macroscopic) classic light can be greatly enhanced with the addition of a weak (microscopic) light field in a non-classical state. The resulting precision is much greater than that possible with either the macroscopic classical or microscopic quantum states alone. In the context of quantifying non-classicality, the amount by which a non-classical state can enhance precision in this way has been termed its "metrological power". Given the technological difficulty of producing high-ampl…
We propose an efficient approach to generate the superposed macroscopically squeezed states with enhanced squeezing in a two-mode optomechanical system. This can be achieved by introducing a sinusoidal modulation to either the cavity frequencies or the coupling strengths between two cavity modes. The squeezement of the oscillator can be significantly enhanced to 12.16 dB with single photon, once the relative ratio of coupling strength is optimized under proper conditions. Further enhanced squeezing can be obtained by carefully adjusting the system parameters. In terms of the Wigner quasi-proba…
We study the transport and quantum walk of nonclassical light in an array of coupled waveguides which have novel properties like very low decoherence and thus making them ideal for storage of quantum information. We show how squeezing gets turned over from one waveguide to another. We further show how input nonclassical light can generate entanglement among different waveguides. Our results involve both first quantization due to array structure and second quantization due to the quantum nature of fields and can also be used to discuss the Talbot effect in the quantum regime.
We study quantum states generated by a sequence of nearest neighbor bipartite entangling operations along a one-dimensional chain of spin qubits. After a single sweep of such a set of operations, the system is effectively described by a matrix product state (MPS) with the same virtual dimension as the spin qubits. We employ the explicit form of the MPS to calculate expectation values and two-site correlation functions of local observables, and we use the results to study fluctuations of collective observables. Through the so-called macroscopicity and the squeezing properties of the collective …
Time-dependent linear coupling between macroscopic quantum resonator modes generates both a parametric amplification also known as a {}"squeezing operation" and a beam splitter operation, analogous to quantum optical systems. These operations, when applied properly, can robustly generate entanglement and squeezing for the quantum resonator modes. Here, we present such coupling schemes between a nanomechanical resonator and a superconducting electrical resonator using applied microwave voltages as well as between two superconducting lumped-element electrical resonators using a r.f. SQUID-mediat…
