We present the second edition of OpenEDS dataset, OpenEDS2020, a novel dataset of eye-image sequences captured at a frame rate of 100 Hz under controlled illumination, using a virtual-reality head-mounted display mounted with two synchronized eye-facing cameras. The dataset, which is anonymized to remove any personally identifiable information on participants, consists of 80 participants of varied appearance performing several gaze-elicited tasks, and is divided in two subsets: 1) Gaze Prediction Dataset, with up to 66,560 sequences containing 550,400 eye-images and respective gaze vectors, created to foster research in spatio-temporal gaze estimation and prediction approaches; and 2) Eye Segmentation Dataset, consisting of 200 sequences sampled at 5 Hz, with up to 29,500 images, of which 5% contain a semantic segmentation label, devised to encourage the use of temporal information to propagate labels to contiguous frames. Baseline experiments have been evaluated on OpenEDS2020, one for each task, with average angular error of 5.37 degrees when performing gaze prediction on 1 to 5 frames into the future, and a mean intersection over union score of 84.1% for semantic segmentation. As its predecessor, OpenEDS dataset, we anticipate that this new dataset will continue creating opportunities to researchers in eye tracking, machine learning and computer vision communities, to advance the state of the art for virtual reality applications. The dataset is available for download upon request at http://research.fb.com/programs/openeds-2020-challenge/.
We propose a novel method on refining cross-person gaze prediction task with eye/face images only by explicitly modelling the person-specific differences. Specifically, we first assume that we can obtain some initial gaze prediction results with existing method, which we refer to as InitNet, and then introduce three modules, the Validity Module (VM), Self-Calibration (SC) and Person-specific Transform (PT)) Module. By predicting the reliability of current eye/face images, our VM is able to identify invalid samples, e.g. eye blinking images, and reduce their effects in our modelling process. Ou…

Vision based text entry systems aim to help disabled people achieve text communication using eye movement. Most previous methods have employed an existing eye tracker to predict gaze direction and design an input method based upon that. However, these methods can result in eye tracking quality becoming easily affected by various factors and lengthy amounts of time for calibration. Our paper presents a novel efficient gaze based text input method, which has the advantage of low cost and robustness. Users can type in words by looking at an on-screen keyboard and blinking. Rather than estimate ga…
Gaze estimation is the fundamental basis for many visual tasks. Yet, the high cost of acquiring gaze datasets with 3D annotations hinders the optimization and application of gaze estimation models. In this work, we propose a novel Head-Eye redirection parametric model based on Neural Radiance Field, which allows dense gaze data generation with view consistency and accurate gaze direction. Moreover, our head-eye redirection parametric model can decouple the face and eyes for separate neural rendering, so it can achieve the purpose of separately controlling the attributes of the face, identity, …

Learning-based methods are believed to work well for unconstrained gaze estimation, i.e. gaze estimation from a monocular RGB camera without assumptions regarding user, environment, or camera. However, current gaze datasets were collected under laboratory conditions and methods were not evaluated across multiple datasets. Our work makes three contributions towards addressing these limitations. First, we present the MPIIGaze that contains 213,659 full face images and corresponding ground-truth gaze positions collected from 15 users during everyday laptop use over several months. An experience s…
With the emergence of Virtual and Mixed Reality (XR) devices, eye tracking has received significant attention in the computer vision community. Eye gaze estimation is a crucial component in XR -- enabling energy efficient rendering, multi-focal displays, and effective interaction with content. In head-mounted XR devices, the eyes are imaged off-axis to avoid blocking the field of view. This leads to increased challenges in inferring eye related quantities and simultaneously provides an opportunity to develop accurate and robust learning based approaches. To this end, we present MagicEyes, the …
Estimating eye-gaze from images alone is a challenging task, in large parts due to un-observable person-specific factors. Achieving high accuracy typically requires labeled data from test users which may not be attainable in real applications. We observe that there exists a strong relationship between what users are looking at and the appearance of the user's eyes. In response to this understanding, we propose a novel dataset and accompanying method which aims to explicitly learn these semantic and temporal relationships. Our video dataset consists of time-synchronized screen recordings, user-…

In this paper we address the problem of unsupervised gaze correction in the wild, presenting a solution that works without the need for precise annotations of the gaze angle and the head pose. We have created a new dataset called CelebAGaze, which consists of two domains X, Y, where the eyes are either staring at the camera or somewhere else. Our method consists of three novel modules: the Gaze Correction module (GCM), the Gaze Animation module (GAM), and the Pretrained Autoencoder module (PAM). Specifically, GCM and GAM separately train a dual in-painting network using data from the domain $X…
Gaze estimation is a fundamental task in many applications of computer vision, human computer interaction and robotics. Many state-of-the-art methods are trained and tested on custom datasets, making comparison across methods challenging. Furthermore, existing gaze estimation datasets have limited head pose and gaze variations, and the evaluations are conducted using different protocols and metrics. In this paper, we propose a new gaze estimation dataset called ETH-XGaze, consisting of over one million high-resolution images of varying gaze under extreme head poses. We collect this dataset fro…

Understanding where people are looking is an informative social cue. In this work, we present Gaze360, a large-scale gaze-tracking dataset and method for robust 3D gaze estimation in unconstrained images. Our dataset consists of 238 subjects in indoor and outdoor environments with labelled 3D gaze across a wide range of head poses and distances. It is the largest publicly available dataset of its kind by both subject and variety, made possible by a simple and efficient collection method. Our proposed 3D gaze model extends existing models to include temporal information and to directly output a…

Images of the eye are key in several computer vision problems, such as shape registration and gaze estimation. Recent large-scale supervised methods for these problems require time-consuming data collection and manual annotation, which can be unreliable. We propose synthesizing perfectly labelled photo-realistic training data in a fraction of the time. We used computer graphics techniques to build a collection of dynamic eye-region models from head scan geometry. These were randomly posed to synthesize close-up eye images for a wide range of head poses, gaze directions, and illumination condit…

In this work we study appearance-based gaze estimation in the wild. We present the MPIIGaze dataset that contains 213,659 images we collected from 15 participants during natural everyday laptop use over more than three months. Our dataset is significantly more variable than existing ones with respect to appearance and illumination. We also present a method for in-the-wild …

One of the most fundamental and information-laden actions humans do is to look at objects. However, a survey of current works reveals that existing gaze-related datasets annotate only the pixel being looked at, and not the boundaries of a specific object of interest. This lack of object annotation presents an opportunity for further advancing gaze estimation research. To this end, we present a challenging new task called gaze object prediction, where the goal is to predict a bounding box for a person's gazed-at object. To train and evaluate gaze networks on this task, we present the Gaze On Ob…
By borrowing the wisdom of human in gaze following, we propose a two-stage solution for gaze point prediction of the target persons in a scene. Specifically, in the first stage, both head image and its position are fed into a gaze direction pathway to predict the gaze direction, and then multi-scale gaze direction fields are generated to characterize the distribution of gaze points without considering the scene contents. In the second stage, the multi-scale gaze direction fields are concatenated with the image contents and fed into a heatmap pathway for heatmap regression. There are two merits…
Mutual gaze detection, i.e., predicting whether or not two people are looking at each other, plays an important role in understanding human interactions. In this work, we focus on the task of image-based mutual gaze detection, and propose a simple and effective approach to boost the performance by using an auxiliary 3D gaze estimation task during the training phase. We achieve the performance boost without additional labeling cost by training the 3D gaze estimation branch using pseudo 3D gaze labels deduced from mutual gaze labels. By sharing the head image encoder between the 3D gaze estimati…

Appearance-based gaze estimation systems have shown great progress recently, yet the performance of these techniques depend on the datasets used for training. Most of the existing gaze estimation datasets setup in interactive settings were recorded in laboratory conditions and those recorded in the wild conditions display limited head pose and illumination variations. Further, we observed little attention so far towards precision evaluations of existing gaze estimation approaches. In this work, we present a large gaze estimation dataset, PARKS-Gaze, with wider head pose and illumination variat…

Unconstrained remote gaze estimation remains challenging mostly due to its vulnerability to the large variability in head-pose. Prior solutions struggle to maintain reliable accuracy in unconstrained remote gaze tracking. Among them, appearance-based solutions demonstrate tremendous potential in improving gaze accuracy. However, existing works still suffer from head movement and are not robust enough to handle real-world scenarios. Especially most of them study gaze estimation under controlled scenarios where the collected datasets often cover limited ranges of both head-pose and gaze which in…

Labelling of human behavior analysis data is a complex and time consuming task. In this paper, a fully automatic technique for labelling an image based gaze behavior dataset for driver gaze zone estimation is proposed. Domain knowledge is added to the data recording paradigm and later labels are generated in an automatic manner using Speech To Text conversion (STT). In order to remove the noise in the STT process due to different illumination and ethnicity of subjects in our data, the speech frequency and energy are analysed. The resultant Driver Gaze in the Wild (DGW) dataset contains 586 rec…
As an indicator of human attention gaze is a subtle behavioral cue which can be exploited in many applications. However, inferring 3D gaze direction is challenging even for deep neural networks given the lack of large amount of data (groundtruthing gaze is expensive and existing datasets use different setups) and the inherent presence of gaze biases due to person-specific difference. In this work, we address the problem of person-specific gaze model adaptation from only a few reference training samples. The main and novel idea is to improve gaze adaptation by generating additional training sam…
This paper addresses the challenging problem of estimating the general visual attention of people in images. Our proposed method is designed to work across multiple naturalistic social scenarios and provides a full picture of the subject's attention and gaze. In contrast, earlier works on gaze and attention estimation have focused on constrained problems in more specific contexts. In particular, our model explicitly represents the gaze direction and handles out-of-frame gaze targets. We leverage three different datasets using a multi-task learning approach. We evaluate our method on widely use…

The interaction between the vestibular and ocular system has primarily been studied in controlled environments. Consequently, off-the shelf tools for categorization of gaze events (e.g. fixations, pursuits, saccade) fail when head movements are allowed. Our approach was to collect a novel, naturalistic, and multimodal dataset of eye+head movements when subjects performed everyday tasks while wearing a mobile eye tracker equipped with an inertial measurement unit and a 3D stereo camera. This Gaze-in-the-Wild dataset (GW) includes eye+head rotational velocities (deg/s), infrared eye images and s…
Gaze estimation involves predicting where the person is looking at within an image or video. Technically, the gaze information can be inferred from two different magnification levels: face orientation and eye orientation. The inference is not always feasible for gaze estimation in the wild, given the lack of clear eye patches in conditions like extreme left/right gazes or occlusions. In this work, we design a model that mimics humans' ability to estimate the gaze by aggregating from focused looks, each at a different magnification level of the face area. The model avoids the need to extract cl…

Appearance-based gaze estimation aims to predict the 3D eye gaze direction from a single image. While recent deep learning-based approaches have demonstrated excellent performance, they usually assume one calibrated face in each input image and cannot output multi-person gaze in real time. However, simultaneous gaze estimation for multiple people in the wild is necessary for real-world applications. In this paper, we propose the first one-stage end-to-end gaze estimation method, GazeOnce, which is capable of simultaneously predicting gaze directions for multiple faces (>10) in an image. In add…

A user's eyes provide means for Human Computer Interaction (HCI) research as an important modal. The time to time scientific explorations of the eye has already seen an upsurge of the benefits in HCI applications from gaze estimation to the measure of attentiveness of a user looking at a screen for a given time period. The eye tracking system as an assisting, interactive tool can be incorporated by physically disabled individuals, fitted best for those who have eyes as only a limited set of communication. The threefold objective of this paper is - 1. To introduce a neural network based archite…
Gaze estimation has grown rapidly in accuracy in recent years. However, these models often fail to take advantage of different computer vision (CV) algorithms and techniques (such as small ResNet and Inception networks and ensemble models) that have been shown to improve results for other CV problems. Additionally, most current gaze estimation models require the use of either both eyes or an entire face, whereas real-world data may not always have both eyes in high resolution. Thus, we propose a gaze estimation model that implements the ResNet and Inception model architectures and makes predic…

Humans are remarkably adept at interpreting the gaze direction of other individuals in their surroundings. This skill is at the core of the ability to engage in joint visual attention, which is essential for establishing social interactions. How accurate are humans in determining the gaze direction of others in lifelike scenes, when they can move their heads and eyes freely, and what are the sources of information for the underlying perceptual processes? These questions pose a challenge from both empirical and computational perspectives, due to the complexity of the visual input in real-life s…

Accurate, robust, inexpensive gaze tracking in the car can help keep a driver safe by facilitating the more effective study of how to improve (1) vehicle interfaces and (2) the design of future Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. In this paper, we estimate head pose and eye pose from monocular video using methods developed extensively in prior work and ask two new interesting questions. First, how much better can we classify driver gaze using head and eye pose versus just using head pose? Second, are there individual-specific gaze strategies that strongly correlate with how much gaze classific…
Deep neural networks for video-based eye tracking have demonstrated resilience to noisy environments, stray reflections, and low resolution. However, to train these networks, a large number of manually annotated images are required. To alleviate the cumbersome process of manual labeling, computer graphics rendering is employed to automatically generate a large corpus of annotated eye images under various conditions. In this work, we introduce a synthetic eye image generation platform that improves upon previous work by adding features such as an active deformable iris, an aspherical cornea, re…
Rather than regressing gaze direction directly from images, we show that adding a 3D shape model can: i) improve gaze estimation accuracy, ii) perform well with lower resolution inputs and iii) provide a richer understanding of the eye-region and its constituent gaze system. Specifically, we use an `eyes and nose' 3D morphable model (3DMM) to capture the eye-region 3D facial geometry and appearance and we equip this with a geometric vergence model of gaze to give an `active-gaze 3DMM'. We show that our approach achieves state-of-the-art results on the Eyediap dataset and we present an ablation…
