On the set of dissipative solutions to the multi-dimensional isentropic Euler equations we introduce a quasi-order by comparing the acceleration at all times. This quasi-order is continuous with respect to a suitable notion of convergence of dissipative solutions. We establish the existence of minimal elements. Minimizing the acceleration amounts to selecting dissipative solutions that are as close to being a weak solution as possible.
This paper proves the existence of variational rotating solutions to the compressible non-isentropic Euler-Poisson equations with prescribed total mass. This extends the result of the isentropic case [Auchmuty and Beals, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 1971] to the non-isentropic case. Compared with the previous result of variational rotating solutions in non-isentropic case [Wu, Journal of Differential Equations, 2015], to keep the constraint of a prescribed finite total mass, the author establishes a new variational structure the non-isentropic Euler-Poisson equations.
In this paper, we study one-dimensional nonhomogeneous isentropic compressible Euler equations with time-periodic boundary conditions. With the aid of the energy methods, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the time-periodic supersonic solutions after some certain time.
In this overview we discuss some recent results of non--uniqueness for the isentropic Euler equations of gas dynamics with particular attention to the role of some admissibility criteria proposed in the literature.
In this short note we partially extend the recent nonuniqueness results on admissible weak solutions to the Riemann problem for the 2D compressible isentropic Euler equations. We prove nonuniqueness of admissible weak solutions that start from the Riemann initial data allowing a contact discontinuity to emerge.
In this paper we investigate the zero dielectric constant limit to the non-isentropic compressible Euler-Maxwell system. We justify this singular limit rigorously in the framework of smooth solutions and obtain the non-isentropic compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as the dielectric constant tends to zero.
We considered classical solutions to the initial boundary value problem for non-isentropic compressible Euler equations with damping in multi-dimensions. We obtained global a priori estimates and global existence results of classical solutions to both non-isentropic Euler equations with damping and their nonlinear diffusion equations under small data assumption. We proved the pressure and velocity decay exponentially to constants, while the entropy and density can not approach constants. Finally, we proved the pressure and velocity of the non-isentropic Euler equations with damping converge ex…
We establish a weak-strong uniqueness result for the isentropic compressible Euler equations, that is: As long as a sufficiently regular solution exists, all energy-admissible weak solutions with the same initial data coincide with it. The main novelty in this contribution, compared to previous literature, is that we allow for possible vacuum in the strong solution.
The non-isentropic compressible Euler-Maxwell system is investigated in $R^3$ in the present paper, and the $L^q$ time decay rate for the global smooth solution is established. It is shown that the density and temperature of electron converge to the equilibrium states at the same rate $(1+t)^{-11/4}$ in $L^q$ norm.
This paper is devoted to the study of the low Mach number limit for the 2D isentropic Euler system associated to ill-prepared initial data with slow blow up rate on $\log\varepsilon^{-1}$. We prove in particular the strong convergence to the solution of the incompressible Euler system when the vorticity belongs to some weighted $BMO$ spaces allowing unbounded functions. The proof is based on the extension of the result of \cite{B-K} to a compressible transport model.
In this paper, we study the initial-boundary value problem of one-dimensional isentropic compressible Euler equations with the source term $βρ|u|^αu$. By means of wave decomposition and the uniform a-priori estimates, we prove the global existence of smooth solutions under small perturbations around the supersonic Fanno flow. Then, by Gronwall's inequality, we get the smooth solution is time-periodic.
A class of differentiable solutions is proved for the isentropic Euler equations in two and three space dimensions. The solutions are explicitly given in terms of solutions to inviscid Burgers equations, and several directions of propagation. The relative orientation of the directions is critical. Within the directional constraints, the Burgers solutions are arbitrary. The several velocities add, and the pressures combine nonlinearly. These solutions cannot exist beyond the time when shocks develop in any of the Burgers solutions.
The bipolar non-isentropic compressible Euler-Maxwell system is investigated in $R^3$ in the present paper, and the $L^q$ time decay rate for the global smooth solution is established. It is shown that the total densities, total temperatures and magnetic field of two carriers converge to the equilibrium states at the same rate $(1+t)^{-3/2+3q/2}$ in $L^q$ norm. But, both the difference of densities and the difference of temperatures of two carriers decay at the rate $(1+t)^{-2-\frac{1}{q}}$, and the velocity and electric field decay at the rate $(1+t)^{-3/2+\frac{1}{2q}}$. This phenomenon on t…
This note is devoted to the linear stability of the Couette flow for the non-isentropic compressible Euler equations in a domain $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. Exploiting the several conservation laws originated from the special structure of the linear system, we obtain a Lyapunov type instability for the density, the temperature, the compressible part of the velocity field, and also obtain an inviscid damping for the incompressible part of the velocity field.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the isentropic compressible Euler equations in a three-dimensional periodic domain under general pressure laws. For any smooth initial density away from the vacuum, we construct infinitely many entropy solutions with no presence of shock. In particular, the constructed density is smooth and the momentum is $α$-Hölder continuous for $α<1/7$. Also, we provide a continuous entropy solution satisfying the entropy inequality strictly.
The dissipative solutions can be seen as a convenient generalization of the concept of weak solution to the isentropic Euler system. They can be seen as expectations of the Young measures associated to a suitable measure--valued solution of the problem. We show that dissipative solutions coincide with weak solutions starting from the same initial data on condition that: {\bf (i)} the weak solution enjoys certain Besov regularity; {\bf (ii)} the symmetric velocity gradient of the weak solution satisfies a one--sided Lipschitz bound.
We study the Riemann problem for the multidimensional compressible isentropic Euler equations. Using the framework developed by Chiodaroli, De Lellis, Kreml and based on the techniques of De Lellis and Székelyhidi, we extend our previous results and prove that whenever the initial Riemann data give rise to a self-similar solution consisting of one admissible shock and one rarefaction wave and are not too far from lying on a simple shock wave, the problem admits also infinitely many admissible weak solutions.
The behaviour of the solutions to the Riemann problem for the isentropic Euler equations when the pressure vanishes is analysed. It is shown that any solution composed of a 1-shock wave and a 2-rarefaction wave tends to a two-shock wave when the pressure gets smaller than a fixed value determined by the Riemann data; by contrast, any solution composed of a 1-rarefaction wave and a 2-shock wave tends to a two-rarefaction wave. The two situations are illustrated with numerical tests.
We consider the periodic problem for two-fluid non-isentropic Euler-Maxwell systems in plasmas. By means of suitable choices of symmetrizers and an induction argument on the order of the time-space derivatives of solutions in energy estimates, the global smooth solution with small amplitude is established near a non-constant equilibrium solution with asymptotic stability properties. This improves the results obtained in \cite{LWF16a} for models with temperature diffusion terms by using the pressure functions $p^ν$ in place of the unknown variables densities $n^ν$.
We define compressive and rarefactive waves and give the differential equations describing smooth wave steepening for the compressible Euler equations with a varying entropy profile and general pressure laws. Using these differential equations, we directly generalize P. Lax's singularity (shock) formation results for hyperbolic systems with two variables to the compressible Euler equations for a polytropic ideal gas. Our results are valid globally without restriction on the size of the variation of initial data.
In this paper we construct unstable shocks in the context of 2D isentropic compressible Euler in azimuthal symmetry. More specifically, we construct initial data that when viewed in self-similar coordinates, converges asymptotically to the unstable $C^{\frac15}$ self-similar solution to the Burgers' equation. Moreover, we show the behavior is stable in $C^8$ modulo a two dimensional linear subspace. Under the azimuthal symmetry assumption, one cannot impose additional symmetry assumptions in order to isolate the corresponding manifold of initial data leading to stability: rather, we rely on mo…
We consider the 2-d isentropic compressible Euler equations. It was shown in by E. Chiodaroli, C. De Lellis and O. Kreml that there exist Riemann initial data as well as Lipschitz initial data for which there exist infinitely many weak solutions that fulfill an energy inequality. In this note we will prove that there is Riemann initial data for which there exist infinitely many weak solutions that conserve energy, i.e. they fulfill an energy equality. As in the aforementioned paper we will also show that there even exists Lipschitz initial data with the same property.
We prove via convex integration a result that allows to pass from a so-called subsolution of the isentropic Euler equations (in space dimension at least $2$) to exact weak solutions. The method is closely related to the incompressible scheme established by De Lellis--Székelyhidi, in particular we only perturb momenta and not densities. Surprisingly, though, this turns out not to be a restriction, as can be seen from our simple characterization of the $Λ$-convex hull of the constitutive set. An important application of our scheme will be exhibited in forthcoming work by Gallenmüller--Wiedemann.
We consider the complete Euler system describing the time evolution of an inviscid non-isothermal gas. We show that the rarefaction wave solutions of the 1D Riemann problem are stable, in particular unique, in the class of all bounded weak solutions to the associated multi-D problem. This may be seen as a counterpart of the non-uniqueness results of physically admissible solutions emanating from 1D shock waves constructed recently by the method of convex integration.
We study the 2D isentropic Euler equations with the ideal gas law. We exhibit a set of smooth initial data that give rise to shock formation at a single point near the planar symmetry. These solutions are associated with non-zero vorticity at the shock and have uniform-in-time 1/3-Hölder bound. Moreover, these point shocks are of self-similar type and share the same profile, which is a solution to the 2D self-similar Burgers equation. Our proof, following the 3D shock formation result of Buckmaster, Shkoller and Vicol, is based on the stable 2D self-similar Burgers profile and the modulation m…
In this paper, we study the relaxation limit of the relaxing Cauchy problem for non-isentropic compressible Euler equations with damping in multi-dimensions. We prove that the velocity of the relaxing equations converges weakly to that of the relaxed equations, while other variables of the relaxing equations converges strongly to the corresponding variables of the relaxed equations. We show that as relaxation time approaches 0, there exists an initial layer for the ill-prepared data, the convergence of the velocity is strong outside the layer; while there is no initial layer for the well-prepa…
Two compressible immiscible fluids in 1D and in the isentropic approximation are considered. The first fluid is surrounded and in contact with the second one. As the Mach number of the first fluid vanishes, we prove the rigorous convergence for the fully non--linear compressible to incompressible limit of the coupled dynamics of the two fluids. A key role is played by a suitably refined wave front tracking algorithm, which yields precise $\mathbf{BV}$, $\mathbf{L}^1$ and weak* convergence estimates, either uniform or explicitly dependent on the Mach number.
In this note, we prove that the solutions obtained to the spherically symmetric Euler equations in the recent works [2, 3] are weak solutions of the multi-dimensional compressible Euler equations. This follows from new uniform estimates made on the artificial viscosity approximations up to the origin, removing previous restrictions on the admissible test functions and ruling out formation of an artificial boundary layer at the origin. The uniform estimates may be of independent interest as concerns the possible rate of blow-up of the density and velocity at the origin for spherically symmetric…
In this paper, we numerically study a class of solutions with spiraling singularities in vorticity for two-dimensional, inviscid, compressible Euler systems, where the initial data have an algebraic singularity in vorticity at the origin. These are different from the multi-dimensional Riemann problems widely studied in the literature. Our computations provide numerical evidence of the existence of initial value problems with multiple solutions, thus revealing a fundamental obstruction toward the well-posedness of the governing equations. The compressible Euler equations are solved using the po…
On the structure of entropy dissipation and regularity for quasi-entropy solutions to 1d scalar conservation laws and to isentropic Euler system with $γ=3$
We study the stochastically forced system of isentropic Euler equations of gas dynamics with a $γ$-law for the pressure. We show the existence of martingale weak entropy solutions; we also discuss the existence and characterization of invariant measures in the concluding section.
We present a new hydrodynamic model consisting of the pressureless Euler equations and the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations where the coupling of two systems is through the drag force. This coupled system can be derived, in the hydrodynamic limit, from the particle-fluid equations that are frequently used to study the medical sprays, aerosols and sedimentation problems. For the proposed system, we first construct the local-in-time classical solutions in an appropriate $L^2$ Sobolev space. We also establish the \emph{a priori} large-time behavior estimate by constructing a Lyapun…
Measure-valued solutions to fluid equations arise naturally, for instance as vanishing viscosity limits, yet exhibit non-uniqueness to a vast extent. In this paper, we show that some measurevalued solutions to the two-dimensional isentropic compressible Euler equations, although they are energy admissible, can be discarded as unphysical, as they do not arise as vanishing viscosity limits. In fact, these measure-valued solutions also do not arise from a sequence of weak solutions of the Euler equations, in contrast to the incompressible case. Such a phenomenon has already been observed by Chiod…
In this paper we extend and complement some recent results by Chiodaroli, De Lellis and Kreml on the well-posedness issue for weak solutions of the compressible isentropic Euler system in $2$ space dimensions with pressure law $p(ρ)=ρ^γ$, $γ\geq 1$. First we show that every Riemann problem whose one-dimensional self-similar solution consists of two shocks admits also infinitely many two-dimensional admissible bounded weak solutions (not containing vacuum) generated by the method of De Lellis and Székelyhidi. Moreover we prove that for some of these Riemann problems and for $1\leq γ< 3$ such so…
We study in this paper the low Mach number limit for the 2d isentropic Euler system with ill-prepared initial data belonging to the critical Besov space $B_{2,1}^2$. By combining Strichartz estimates with the special structure of the vorticity we prove that the lifespan goes to infinity as the Mach number goes to zero. We also prove the strong convergence in the space of the initial data $B_{2,1}^2$ of the incompressible parts to the solution of the incompressible Euler system. There are at least two main difficulties: the first one concerns the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion which is not known to…
It is nowadays well understood that the multidimensional isentropic Euler system is desperately ill--posed. Even certain smooth initial data give rise to infinitely many solutions and all available selection criteria fail to ensure both global existence and uniqueness. We propose a different approach to well--posedness of this system based on ideas from the theory of Markov semigroups: we show the existence of a Borel measurable solution semiflow. To this end, we introduce a notion of dissipative solution which is understood as time dependent trajectories of the basic state variables - the mas…
We first construct the global unique solution by assuming that the initial data is small in the $H^3$ norm but the higher order derivatives could be large. If further the initial data belongs to $\Dot{H}^{-s}$ ($0\le s<3/2$) or $\dot{B}_{2,\infty}^{-s}$ ($0< s\le3/2$), we obtain the various decay rates of the solution and its higher order derivatives. In particular, the decay rates of the density and temperature of electron could reach to $(1+t)^{-13/4}$ in $L^2$ norm.
In this paper, we solve constructively the piston problem for one-dimensional isentropic Euler equations of modified Chaplygin gas. In solutions, we prove rigorously the global existence and uniqueness of a shock wave separating constant states ahead of the piston when the piston pushed forward into the gas. It is quite different from the results of Chaplygin gas or generalized Chaplygin gas in which a Radon measure solution is constructed to deal with concentration of mass on the piston. When the piston pulled back from the gas, we strictly confirm only the first family rarefaction wave exist…
In this paper, we study the vanishing viscosity limit of one-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity, to the isentropic compressible Euler equations. Based on several new uniform estimates to the viscous systems, in addition to the framework recently established by G. Chen and M. Perepelitsa, we justify that the finite energy solution of the isentropic compressible Euler equations for a large class of initial data can be obtained as the inviscid limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations even when the viscosity depends on the density.
In this article, we prove uniqueness and energy balance for isentropic Euler system driven by a cylindrical Wiener process. Pathwise uniqueness result is obtained for weak solutions having Hölder regularity $C^α,α>1/2$ in space and satisfying one-sided Lipschitz bound on velocity. We prove Onsager's conjecture for isentropic Euler system with stochastic forcing, that is, energy balance equation for solutions enjoying Hölder regularity $C^α,α>1/3$. Both the results have been obtained in a more general setting by considering regularity in Besov space.
We prove the uniqueness and stability of entropy shocks to the isentropic Euler systems among all vanishing viscosity limits of solutions to associated Navier-Stokes systems. To take into account the vanishing viscosity limit, we show a contraction property for any large perturbations of viscous shocks to the Navier-Stokes system. The contraction estimate does not depend on the strength of the viscosity. This provides a good control on the inviscid limit process. We prove that, for any initial value, there exists a vanishing viscosity limit to solutions of the Navier-Stokes system. The converg…
The derivation of different models of non linear acoustic in thermo-ellastic media as the Kuznetsov equation, the Khokhlov-Zabolotskaya-Kuznetsov (KZK) equation and the Nonlinear Progressive wave Equation (NPE) from an isentropic Navier-Stokes/Euler system is systematized using the Hilbert type expansion in the corresponding perturbative and (for the KZK and NPE equations) paraxial ansatz . The use of small, to compare to the constant state perturbations, correctors allows to obtain the approximation results for the solutions of these models and to estimate the time during which they keep clos…
In this paper, we examine the question of the boundary controllability of the one-dimensional non-isentropic Euler equation for compressible polytropic gas, in the context of weak entropy solutions. We consider the system in Eulerian coordinates and the one in Lagrangian coordinates. We obtain for both systems a result of controllability toward constant states (with the limitation $γ< 5/3$ on the adiabatic constant for the Lagrangian system). The solutions that we obtain remain of small total variation in space if the initial condition is itself of sufficiently small total variation.
This paper is devoted to the study of the low Mach number limit for the isentropic Euler system with axisymmetric initial data without swirl. In the first part of the paper we analyze the problem corresponding to the subcritical regularities, that is $H^s$ {with $s>\frac52$.} Taking advantage of the Strichartz estimates and using the special structure of the vorticity we show that the {lifespan $T_ε$} of the solutions is bounded below by $\log\log\log\frac1ε$, where $ε$ denotes the Mach number. Moreover, we prove that the incompressible parts converge to the solution of the incompressible Eule…
In this paper, we study the regularity properties of bounded entropy solutions to the isentropic Euler equations with $γ= 3$. First, we use a blow-up technique to obtain a new trace theorem for all such solutions. Second, we use a modified De Giorgi type iteration on the kinetic formulation to show a new partial regularity result on the Riemann invariants. We are able to conclude that in fact for any bounded entropy solution $u$, the density $ρ$ is almost everywhere upper semicontinuous away from vacuum. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a nonlinear hyperbolic system, which fails …
We consider the Riemann problem composed of two shocks for the 1D Euler system. We show that the Riemann solution with two shocks is stable and unique in the class of weak inviscid limits of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with initial data with bounded energy. This work extends to the case of two shocks a previous result of the authors in the case of a single shock. It is based on the method of weighted relative entropy with shifts known as $a$-contraction theory. A major difficulty due to the method is that very little control is available on the shifts. A modification of the constr…
The existence of dissipative solutions to the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations was established in this paper. This notion was inspired by the concept of dissipative solutions to the incompressible Euler equations of Lions (\cite{Lions-1996}, Section 4.4). Our method is to recover such solutions by passing to the limits from approximated solutions, thanks to compactness argument.
We obtain existence and conormal Sobolev regularity of strong solutions to the 3D compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes system on the half-space with a Navier boundary condition, over a time that is uniform with respect to the viscosity parameters when these are small. These solutions then converge globally and strongly in $L^2$ towards the solution of the compressible isentropic Euler system when the viscosity parameters go to zero.
This paper is devoted to a rigorous derivation of the isentropic Euler-alignment system with singular communication weights $ϕ_α(x) = |x|^{-α}$ for some $α> 0$. We consider a kinetic BGK-alignment model consisting of a kinetic BGK-type equation with a singular Cucker-Smale alignment force. By taking into account a small relaxation parameter, which corresponds to the asymptotic regime of a strong effect from BGK operator, we quantitatively derive the isentropic Euler-alignment system with pressure $p(ρ) = ρ^γ$, $γ= 1 + \frac2d$ from that kinetic equation.
We are concerned with the isothermal limit of entropy solutions in $L^\infty$, containing the vacuum states, of the Euler equations for isentropic gas dynamics. We prove that the entropy solutions in $L^\infty$ of the isentropic Euler equations converge strongly to the corresponding entropy solutions of the isothermal Euler equations, when the adiabatic exponent $γ\rightarrow 1$. This is achieved by combining careful entropy analysis and refined kinetic formulation with compensated compactness argument to obtain the required uniform estimates for the limit. The entropy analysis involves carefu…
We develop a method that works in general product Riemannian manifold to decompose the three-dimensional steady full compressible Euler system, which is of elliptic-hyperbolic composite-mixed type for subsonic flows. The method is applied to show stability of spherically symmetric subsonic flows and transonic shocks in space $\mathbb{R}^3$ under multidimensional perturbations of boundary conditions.
