Within an advanced Langevin-hydrodynamics framework coupled to a hybrid fragmentation-coalescence hadronization model, we study heavy flavor quenching and flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We investigate how the initial heavy quark spectrum, the energy loss and hadronization mechanisms of heavy quarks in medium, the evolution profile of pre-equilibrium stage, the flow of medium and the temperature dependence of heavy quark diffusion coefficient influence the suppression and elliptic flow of heavy mesons at RHIC and the LHC. Our result shows that different modeling of initial conditions, pre-equilibrium evolution and in-medium interaction can individually yield about 10-40% uncertainties in D meson suppression and flow at low transverse momentum. We also find that a proper combination of collisional versus radiative energy loss, coalescence versus fragmentation in hadronization, and the inclusion of medium flow are the most important factors for describing the suppression and elliptic flow of heavy mesons.
The Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model coupled to hydrodynamical background is extended to include transport of both light partons and heavy quarks through the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The LBT model includes both elastic and inelastic medium-interaction of both primary jet shower partons and thermal recoil partons within perturbative QCD (pQCD). It is shown to simultaneously describe the experimental data on heavy and light flavor hadron suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions for different centralities at RHIC and LHC energies. More detailed in…
Relativistic heavy-ion experiments have observed similar quenching effects for (prompt) $D$ mesons compared to charged hadrons for transverse momenta larger than 6-8~GeV, which remains a mystery since heavy quarks typically lose less energies in quark-gluon plasma than light quarks and gluons. Recent measurements of the nuclear modification factors of $B$ mesons and $B$-decayed $D$ mesons by the CMS Collaboration provide a unique opportunity to study the flavor hierarchy of jet quenching. Using a linear Boltzmann transport model combined with hydrodynamics simulation, we study the energy loss …
Recent experiments have observed large anisotropic collective flows in high multiplicity proton-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which indicates the possible formation of mini quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in small collision systems. However, no jet quenching has been confirmed in such small systems so far. To understand this intriguing result, the system size scan experiments have been proposed to bridge the gap between large and small systems. In this work, we perform a systematic study on both heavy and light flavor jet quenching in different collision systems at the LHC energ…
We present a successful description of the medium modification of light and heavy flavor jets within a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based approach. Only the couplings involving hard partons are assumed to be weak. The effect of the medium on a hard parton, per unit time, is encoded in terms of three non-perturbative, related transport coefficients which describe the transverse momentum squared gained, the elastic energy loss and diffusion in elastic energy transfer. A fit of the centrality dependence of the suppression and the azimuthal anisotropy of leading hadrons tends to favor somewhat larger t…
We present recent results for heavy-flavor observables in nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC energies, obtained with the POWLANG transport setup. The initial creation of c-cbar and b-bbar pairs is simulated with a perturbative QCD approach (POWHEG+PYTHIA); their propagation in the medium (created in the nucleus-nucleus or in proton-nucleus collision) is studied with the relativistic Langevin equation, here solved using weak-coupling transport coefficients. Successively, the heavy quarks hadronize in the medium. We compute the nuclear modification factor and the elliptic flow parameter of the fi…
Multiple interactions between parton showers and the surrounding QCD matter are expected to underlie the strong medium-modifications of jet observables in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and at the LHC. Here, we note that such jet-medium interactions alter generically and characteristically the color correlations in the parton shower. We characterize these effects in a color-differential calculation of the medium-induced gluon radiation spectrum to first and second order in opacity. By interfacing simple branching histories of medium-modified color flow with the Lund hadronizat…
The quenching of jets (and high-pT particle spectra) observed in heavy-ion collisions is interpreted as due to the energy lost by hard partons crossing the Quark Gluon Plasma. Here we review recent efforts to include in its modeling important qualitative features of QCD, like the correlations in multiple gluon emissions and the color-flow pattern in parton branchings. In particular, the modification of color connections among the partons of a shower developing in the presence of a medium is a generic occurrence accompanying parton energy-loss. We show how this effect can leave its fingerprints…
Jet quenching has been used successfully as a hard probe to study properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-collisions at both the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We will review recent progresses in theoretical and phenomenological studies of jet quenching with jet transport models. Special emphasis is given to effects of jet-induced medium response on a wide variety of experimental measurements and their implication on extracting transport properties of the QGP in heavy-ion collisions.
We calculate the jet quenching parameter in medium with chemical potential from AdS/CFT correspondence. Our result is summarized in a plot. Moreover, we extract the explicit form of the jet quenching parameter of medium with small chemical potential for phases of dual SYM corresponding to large and small black holes. For the former phase, the jet quenching is increased as the charge density increases, however, for the latter it is the opposite though the background is thermodynamically unstable.
We present a global fit to single- and double-inclusive suppression data of high-$p_T$ particles in central Au+Au collisions at top RHIC energy. We also include in this analysis data on heavy quarks via their D and B meson semi-leptonic decays (i.e. non-photonic electrons). The analysis is based on the parton quenching weights for medium-induced gluon radiation computed in the BDMPS approximation then embedded in a hydrodynamical description of the bulk medium. Our results indicate that values of the transport coefficient $\hat q$ more than four times larger than perturbative estimates are pre…
We study the jet quenching effect in heavy ion collisions, based on medium-induced splitting functions calculated from Soft Collinear Effective Theory with Glauber Gluons. Our method is formulated in the language of DGLAP evolution equations with medium-induced splitting functions. In the small-$x$ soft gluon approximation we analytically solve the evolution equations and find an intuitive connection to the energy loss approach. For central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC we quantify the effect of finite-$x$ corrections for the nuclear modification factor and compare to data.
The modification of hard jets in dense matter has so far been described by four different formalisms based on perturbative QCD (pQCD). In these proceedings, we compare the various approximations made in these different schemes, especially those regarding the structure of the medium through which jets propagate. Following this, we highlight some of the major differences in the various physical processes contained in the different approaches.
In these proceedings, we discuss the role of heavy quark mass on the formation of parton showers. Mass effects are not well understood when parton branching occurs in nuclear matter, such as the quark-gluon plasma. Recently, a theoretically consistent picture of open heavy flavor production in ultra relativistic nuclear collisions has begun to emerge based on effective theories of QCD, such as soft collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons. We show that implementation of in-medium splitting processes containing heavy quarks into next-to-leading order calculations of heavy flavor productio…
The physics of the quenching of hard jets in dense matter is briefly reviewed. This is presented within the framework of the partonic medium modification of the fragmentation functions. Modifications in both deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off large nuclei and high-energy heavy-ion collisions are presented.
We calculate higher-order corrections to the quenching factor of heavy-quark jets due to hard, in-medium splittings in the framework of the BDMPS-Z formalism. These corrections turn out to be sensitive to a single mass-scale $m_\ast = (\hat q L)^{1/2}$, where $\hat q$ is the medium transport coefficient and $L$ the path length, and allow to draw a distinction between the way light, with $m < m_\ast$ (in contrast to massless $m=0$), and genuinely heavy, with $m > m_\ast$, quark jets are quenched in the medium. We show that the corrections to the quenching factor at high energies are double-loga…
A short summary of different approaches to the parton energy loss problem is given. A particular attention is paid to the differences between various models. A possible solution to the problem of distinguishing competing approaches is discussed.
We present the first application of a recently-developed effective theory of jet propagation in matter SCETG to inclusive hadron suppression in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC. SCETG-based splitting kernels allow us to go beyond the traditional energy loss approximation and unify the treatment of vacuum and medium-induced parton showers. In the soft gluon emission limit, we establish a simple analytic relation between the QCD evolution and energy loss approaches to jet quenching. We quantify the uncertainties associated with the implementation of the in-medim modification of hadron produ…
One of the main goals of the study of high transverse momentum (P_T) observables in the context of ultrarelativisic heavy-ion collisions is the determination of properties of the produced QCD matter. In particular, the transport coefficients qhat and ehat, characterizing the interaction of the medium with a high p_T parton, are accessible via high P_T probes. However, a precision extraction of their temperature dependence from current data faces the problem that neither the spacetime geometry of the evolving matter droplet nor the link between thermodynamics and transport coefficients is unamb…
We present a new definition of the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ in a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal expansion. We propose a boost-invariant definition of $\hat{q}$, which is proportional to the broadening of the angular variables $η$ (the pseudo-rapidity) and $ϕ$ (the azimuthal angle). We furthermore consider radiative corrections to $\hat{q}$ and find potentially large corrections enhanced by a double logarithm like the case of a static medium. But unlike for the static medium, these corrections are now local in (proper) time.
We study the radiative energy loss of hard partons in a soft medium in the multiple soft scattering approximation. The soft medium is described by a 3D hydrodynamical model and we treat the averaging over all possible parton paths through the medium without approximation. While the nuclear suppression factor $R_{AA}$ does not reflect the high quality of the medium description (except in a reduced systematic uncertainty in extracting the quenching power of the medium), the hydrodynamical model also allows to study different centralities and in particular the angular variation of $R_{AA}$ with r…
After almost two decades of investigation, jet quenching has become a fundamental tool to study the properties of the QCD matter produced in high-energy nuclear collisions. Despite the large progress in both experimental and theoretical tools, several unknowns remain to be solved. In particular the systematics of the QCD matter parameters extracted at different energies and centralities is still puzzling. On the other hand, a lot of attention has been put in the last few years to a correct resummation of the multiple scatterings that the particles of the jet suffer when traversing the QCD matt…
In the jet quenching model, we have analysed the PHENIX data on nuclear modification factor of $π^0$, in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV, and extracted the initial gluon density of the medium produced. In jet quenching, partons lose energy in the medium, depending on the medium density as well as on the in-medium path length. Systematic analysis indicate that in most central (0-10% centrality) collisions, medium density is very large $dN_g/dy \sim$ 2150. Medium density decreases exponentially as the collision centrality decreases and in very peripheral (70-92% centrality) collisions, $d…
We calculate the probability (``quenching weight'') that a hard parton radiates an additional energy fraction due to scattering in spatially extended QCD matter. This study is based on an exact treatment of finite in-medium path length, it includes the case of a dynamically expanding medium, and it extends to the angular dependence of the medium-induced gluon radiation pattern. All calculations are done in the multiple soft scattering approximation (Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigné-Schiff--Zakharov ``BDMPS-Z''-formalism) and in the single hard scattering approximation (N=1 opacity approximation…
The central goal of jet quenching studies in high-energy nuclear collisions is the characterization of those QCD medium properties that are accessible by these probes. Most of the discussion in the last years has been focused on the determination of the jet quenching parameter, $\hat q$. We present here an extraction of this parameter using data of inclusive particle suppression at RHIC and LHC energies for different centralities. Our approach consists of fitting a $K$ factor that quantifies the departure of this parameter from an ideal estimate, $K\equiv \hat q/(2ε^{3/4})$, where $\hat q$ is …
Jet quenching has become a fundamental tool to study the hot QCD matter produced in heavy ion collisions. While important theoretical and experimental advances have been made in the last two decades, the extraction of the medium properties and the comparison with finite temperature QCD is still particularly worrisome. In this work we show that improvements in the calculation of the medium-induced gluon spectrum are required for a correct extraction of the parameters without temperature issues. In particular, we employ an improved numerical implementation of multiple hard scatterings that resum…

[Background:] A significant quenching of high energy jets was observed in the heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) facility, and is now confirmed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) facility. The RHIC plus LHC era provides a unique opportunity to study the jet-medium interaction that leads to the jet quenching, and the medium itself at different collision energies (medium temperatures). [Purpose:] We study the azimuthal anisotropy of jet quenching, to seek constraints on different models featuring distinct path-length and density dependences for jet energy loss, an…

Motivated by the new results obtained in heavy-ion collision experiments at the LHC, several extensions of the standard calculations of energy loss have been made recently. In this manuscript, I provide a short overview of some of the recent developments in jet quenching theory. First, I discuss some improvements computed by different groups to implement energy-momentum conservation in a rigorous way, relaxing some of the assumptions that were made in the standard jet quenching calculations. Second, quantum interference effects between different parton emitters when propagating through an exte…
The study of the structure of strongly interacting dense matter via hard jets is reviewed. High momentum partons produced in hard collisions produce a shower of gluons prior to undergoing the non-perturbative process of hadronization. In the presence of a dense medium this shower is modified due to scattering of the various partons off the constituents in the medium. The modified pattern of the final detected hadrons is then a probe of the structure of the medium as perceived by the jet. Starting from the factorization paradigm developed for the case of particle collisions, we review the basic…
Utilizing the generalized factorization of twist-4 processes, we derive the modified heavy quark fragmentation function after considering the gluon radiation induced by multiple scattering in DIS. It is found that the mass effects of heavy quark may reduce the gluon formation time and change the medium size dependence of heavy quark energy loss. The radiative energy loss is also significantly suppressed relative to a light quark due to the dead-cone effect.
Jets produced by the initial hard scattering in heavy ion collision events lose energy due to interactions with the color-deconfined medium formed around them: the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Jet-medium interactions constitute an important theoretical and experimental field for studies of QGP, and various models with different assumptions have been proposed to describe them. A fair and direct comparison of these models requires that all other aspects of the simulation be fixed, which is achieved in this work by relying on the JETSCAPE framework. We employ JETSCAPE to directly and comprehensively…
Jet quenching has successfully served as a hard probe to study the properties of Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). As a multi-particle system, jets take time to develop from a highly virtual parton to a group of partons close to mass shells. In this study, we present a systematical study on the effects of this formation time on jet quenching in relativistic nuclear collisions. Jets from initial hard scatterings were simulated with Pythia, and their interactions with QGP were described using a Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model that incorporates both elastic and inelastic scatterings between jet pa…
The heavy quark collisional scattering on partons of the quark gluon plasma (QGP) is studied in a QCD medium at finite temperature and chemical potential. We evaluate the effects of finite parton masses and widths, finite temperature $T$ and quark chemical potential $μ_q$ on the different elastic cross sections for dynamical quasi-particles (on- and off-shell particles in the QGP medium as described by the dynamical quasi-particles model "DQPM") using the leading order Born diagrams. Our results show clearly the decrease of the $qQ$ and $gQ$ total elastic cross sections when the temperature an…
In the momentum kick model, a near-side jet emerges near the surface, kicks medium partons, loses energy, and fragments into the trigger particle and fragmentation products. The kicked medium partons subsequently materialize as the observed ridge particles, which carry direct information on the magnitude of the momentum kick and the initial parton momentum distribution at the moment of jet-(medium parton) collisions. The initial parton momentum distribution extracted from the STAR ridge data for central AuAu collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV has a thermal-like transverse momentum distributio…

A new model potential in the presence of collective flow describing the interaction of the hard jet with scattering centers is derived based on the static color-screened Yukawa potential. The flow effect on jet quenching with detailed balance is investigated in pQCD. It turns out that the collective flow changes the emission current and the LPM destructive interference comparing to that in the static medium. Considering the collective flow with velocity v_z along the jet direction, the energy loss is (1 - v_z) times that in the static medium to the first order of opacity. The flow dependence o…
In this article we investigate how the energy and momentum deposited by partonic dijets in the quark-gluon plasma may perturb the geometry-induced hydrodynamic expansion of the bulk nuclear matter created in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. The coupling between the jets and the medium is done through a source term in the energy-momentum conservation equations for ideal hydrodynamics. We concentrate our attention at mid-rapidity and solve the equations event-by-event imposing boost-invariance. For $p_T \gtrsim 1$ GeV the anisotropic flow is found to be considerably enhanced, if the dijets deposit …
The effect of detailed balance in induced gluon radiation for an energetic parton propagating inside a quark-gluon plasma is discussed. The stimulated thermal gluon emission reduces while absorption increases the parton's energy. The net contribution results in a reduction of the effective parton energy loss. The relative reduction of the parton energy loss is found to be important for intermediate parton energies and negligible for very high energies. This will increase the energy dependence of the parton energy loss and will affect the shape of suppression of moderately high p_T hadron spect…
Medium modification of jet fragmentation function due to multiple scattering and induced gluon radiation leads directly to jet quenching or suppression of leading particle distribution from jet fragmentation. One can extract an effective total parton energy loss which can be related to the total transverse momentum broadening. For an expanding medium, both are shown to be sensitive to the initial parton density and formation time. Therefore, one can extract the initial parton density and formation time from simultaneous measurements of parton energy loss and transverse momentum broadening. Imp…
While perturbative QCD is sufficient for understanding the color, mass and energy dependences of parton energy loss and jet quenching at large transverse momentum in heavy-ion collisions, a simultaneous description of heavy flavor nuclear modification factor $R_\mathrm{AA}$ and elliptic flow coefficient $v_2$ at low and intermediate $p_\mathrm{T}$ still remains a challenge due to the effects from non-perturbative interactions. In this work, we extend the linear Boltzmann transport model by implementing a generalized Cornell-type potential that incorporates both short-range Yukawa interaction a…
We present results for the quenching, elliptic flow and azimuthal correlations of heavy flavour particles in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions obtained through the POWLANG transport setup, developed in the past to study the propagation of heavy quarks in the Quark-Gluon Plasma and here extended to include a modeling of their hadronization in the presence of a medium. Hadronization is described as occurring via the fragmentation of strings with endpoints given by the heavy (anti-)quark Q(Qbar) and a thermal parton $qbar(q)$ from the medium. The flow of the light quarks is shown to affect s…
A short overview is presented for the recent progress in the theory of heavy flavor transport in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions, including a summary of different transport models, their phenomenological results of heavy meson quenching and flow at RHIC and LHC, a possible solution to the $R_\mathrm{AA}$ vs. $v_2$ puzzle and predictions for heavy flavor observables beyond the current measurements.
Multi-particle potentials from light-like Wilson lines in quark-gluon plasmas: a generalized relation of in-medium splitting rates to jet-quenching parameters $\hat q$
A new Monte Carlo model of jet quenching in nuclear collisions, CUJET1.0, is applied to predict the jet flavor dependence of the nuclear modification factor for fragments {\it $f=π,D,B,e^-$} from quenched jet flavors {\it $g,u,c,b$} in central collisions at RHIC and LHC. The nuclear modification factors for different flavors are predicted to exhibit a novel level crossing pattern over a transverse momentum range $5< p_T< 100$ GeV which can test jet-medium dynamics in quark gluon plasmas.
Concept of transverse deflection probability of a parton that travels through strongly interacting medium, recently introduced by D'Eramo, Liu and Rajagopal, have been used to derive high energy evolution equation for the jet quenching parameter in stochastic multiple scatterings regime. Jet quenching parameter, ${\hat q}(x)$, appears to evolve with $x$, with an exponent $0.9{\bar α}_s$, which is slightly less than that of $x {\cal G} (x)$ where ${\cal G} (x)$ is the gluon distribution function.
Medium modification of jet fragmentation functions and parton energy loss in cold and hot matter are reviewed. The predicted nuclear modification of the jet fragmentation function agrees well with the recent HERMES data with a resultant energy loss dE/dx approximately 0.5 GeV/fm. From the the recent PHENIX data of high p_T pi_0 spectra in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s)=130 GeV, one extracts an energy loss for a 10 GeV parton that is equivalent to dE/dx=7.3 GeV/fm in a static medium with the same gluon density as in the initial stage of the collision at tau_0=0.2 fm/c. Constraints on jet q…
