The heavy quark collisional scattering on partons of the quark gluon plasma (QGP) is studied in a QCD medium at finite temperature and chemical potential. We evaluate the effects of finite parton masses and widths, finite temperature $T$ and quark chemical potential $μ_q$ on the different elastic cross sections for dynamical quasi-particles (on- and off-shell particles in the QGP medium as described by the dynamical quasi-particles model "DQPM") using the leading order Born diagrams. Our results show clearly the decrease of the $qQ$ and $gQ$ total elastic cross sections when the temperature and the quark chemical potential increase. These effects are amplified for finite $μ_q$ at temperatures lower than the corresponding critical temperature $T_c (μ_q)$. Using these cross sections we, furthermore, estimate the energy loss and longitudinal and transverse momentum transfers of a heavy quark propagating in a finite temperature and chemical potential medium. Accordingly, we have shown that the transport properties of heavy quarks are sensitive to the temperature and chemical potential variations. Our results provide some basic ingredients for the study of charm physics in heavy-ion collisions at Beam Energy Scan (BES) at RHIC and CBM experiment at FAIR.
Theoretical understanding of the observed jet quenching measurements at RHIC and LHC is challenging in QCD because it requires understanding of parton to hadron fragmentation function in non-equilibrium QCD. In this paper, by using closed-time path integral formalism, we derive the gauge invariant definition of the gluon to hadron fragmentation function in non-equilibrium QCD which is consistent with factorization theorem in non-equilibrium QCD from first principles.
The gluonic contribution to the nuclear modification factor R_AA is investigated for central Au + Au collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV employing a perturbative QCD-based parton cascade including radiative processes. A flat quenching pattern is found up to transverse momenta of 30 GeV which is slightly smaller compared with results from the Gyulassy-Levai-Vitev formalism. We demonstrate that the present microscopic transport description provides challenging means of investigating both jet-quenching and a strong buildup of elliptic flow in terms of the same standard perturbative QCD interactions.
We perform a joint jet tomographic analysis of the data on the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ from PHENIX at RHIC and ALICE at LHC. The computations are performed accounting for radiative and collisional parton energy loss with running coupling constant. Our results show that the observed slow variation of $R_{AA}$ from RHIC to LHC indicates that the QCD coupling constant is suppressed in the quark-gluon plasma produced at LHC.
We present a short overview of recent progress in the theory of jet quenching in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions, including phenomenological studies of jet quenching at RHIC and the LHC, development in NLO perburbative QCD calculation of jet broadening and energy loss, full jet evolution and modification, medium response to jet transport, and lattice QCD and AdS/CFT studies of jet quenching.
I review arguments for the existence of a critical point E in the QCD phase diagram as a function of temperature T and baryon chemical potential μ. I describe how heavy ion collision experiments at the SPS and RHIC can discover the tell-tale signatures of such a critical point, thus mapping this region of the QCD phase diagram. I contrast the different ways in which the matter produced in a heavy ion collision can be driven out of equilibrium: quenching out of equilibrium (possible, but not guaranteed, if the transition region is traversed at μ<< μ_E) vs. slowing out of equilibrium (guaranteed…
We calculate the jet quenching parameter in medium with chemical potential from AdS/CFT correspondence. Our result is summarized in a plot. Moreover, we extract the explicit form of the jet quenching parameter of medium with small chemical potential for phases of dual SYM corresponding to large and small black holes. For the former phase, the jet quenching is increased as the charge density increases, however, for the latter it is the opposite though the background is thermodynamically unstable.
Jet quenching has become a fundamental tool to study the hot QCD matter produced in heavy ion collisions. While important theoretical and experimental advances have been made in the last two decades, the extraction of the medium properties and the comparison with finite temperature QCD is still particularly worrisome. In this work we show that improvements in the calculation of the medium-induced gluon spectrum are required for a correct extraction of the parameters without temperature issues. In particular, we employ an improved numerical implementation of multiple hard scatterings that resum…
After almost two decades of investigation, jet quenching has become a fundamental tool to study the properties of the QCD matter produced in high-energy nuclear collisions. Despite the large progress in both experimental and theoretical tools, several unknowns remain to be solved. In particular the systematics of the QCD matter parameters extracted at different energies and centralities is still puzzling. On the other hand, a lot of attention has been put in the last few years to a correct resummation of the multiple scatterings that the particles of the jet suffer when traversing the QCD matt…
QCD monopoles are magnetically charged quasiparticles whose Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) at $T<T_c$ creates electric confinement and flux tubes. The "magnetic scenario" of QCD proposes that scattering on the non-condensed component of the monopole ensemble at $T>T_c$ is responsible for the unusual kinetic properties of QGP. In this paper, we study the contribution of the monopoles to jet quenching phenomenon, using the BDMPS framework and hydrodynamic backgrounds. In the lowest order for cross sections, we calculate the nuclear modification factor, $R_\text{AA},$ and azimuthal anisotropy, …
We perform an analysis of jet quenching in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies with the temperature dependent running QCD coupling. Our results show that the $T$-dependent QCD coupling largely eliminates the difference between the optimal values of $α_s$ for the RHIC and LHC energies. It may be viewed as direct evidence of the increase of the thermal suppression of $α_s$ with rising temperature.
The value of the parton to hadron fragmentation function in QCD in vacuum (for example from proton-proton collisions at high energy colliders) is directly/indirectly used in the literature to study the jet quenching and the hadron production from quark-gluon plasma at RHIC and LHC. In this paper we show that this is not possible because, unlike the perturbative propagator in non-equilibrium QCD, the parton to hadron fragmentation function is a non-perturbative quantity in QCD and hence it is not possible to decompose the fragmentation function in non-equilibrium QCD into the vacuum part and th…

We consider synchrotron-like radiation in QCD by generalizing Schwinger's treatment of quantum synchrotron radiation in QED to the case of a constant chromomagnetic field. We suggest a novel mechanism for {\em jet quenching} in heavy ion collisions, whereby high-$p_t$ partons get depleted through strong (classical) color fields. The latters are encountered in the color glass condensate or in the form of expanding shells of exploding sphalerons. Unlike bremsstrahlung radiation through multiple soft rescattering, synchrotron radiation converts a jet into a wide shower of soft gluons. We estimate…
We present a new formulation of jet quenching in perturbative QCD beyond the eikonal approximation. Multiple scattering in the medium is modelled through infra-red-continued (2 -> 2) scattering matrix elements in QCD and the parton shower describing further emissions. The interplay between these processes is arranged in terms of a formation time constraint such that coherent emissions can be treated consistently. Emerging partons are hadronised by the Lund string model, tuned to describe LEP data in conjunction with the parton shower. Based on this picture we obtain a good description of the n…
Following the nonperturbative prescription for the jet quenching parameter recently proposed by Liu, Rajagopal and Wiedemann, we compute the first correction in the inverse `t Hooft coupling corresponding to string alpha' corrections in the dual background. We also consider the introduction of a chemical potential for the U(1)^3 gauged R-symmetry. While the former mildly diminishes the jet quenching parameter -this suggesting a smooth interpolation between the strong coupling and perturbative results-, the latter generically increases its value. We comment on the extension of this setup to qua…
We argue that the radiative energy loss of a parton traversing the quark-gluon plasma is determined by Landau damping of soft modes in the plasma. Using this idea, we calculate the jet quenching parameter of a gluon. The calculation is done in SU(3) quenched QCD within the stochastic vacuum model. At the LHC-relevant temperatures, the result depends on the gluon condensate, the vacuum correlation length, and the gluon Debye mass. Numerically, when the temperature varies from T=T_c to T=900 MeV, the jet quenching parameter rises from \hat q=0 to approximately 1.8 GeV^2/fm. We compare our result…
Using the Fokker-Planck equation we have studied the drag co-efficient $A(t)$ and the consequent shift $Δp_\perp (L)$ in the transverse momentum due to collisional energy loss of energetic partons while passing through a chemically equilibrating quark-gluon plasma. Based on these we estimate the quenching factor $Q(p_\perp)$ when the medium is undergoing longitudinal expansion governed by master rate equations. In contrast to the case of chemically equilibrated plasma investigated earlier by Mustafa and Thoma \cite{mus} we find less quenching because our calculated $Q(p_\perp)$ is always great…
We show that partons traversing a quark-gluon plasma can lose substantial amounts of energy also by scatterings, and not only through medium-induced radiation as mainly considered previously. Results from Monte Carlo simulations of soft interactions of partons, emerging from a hard scattering, through multiple elastic scatterings on gluons in an expanding relativistic plasma show a sizeable jet quenching which can account for a substantial part of the effect observed in RHIC data.
Fast thermalization, a subsequent strong buildup of elliptic flow of QCD matter and jet-quenching as found at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are understood as the consequence of perturbative QCD (pQCD) interactions within the 3+1 dimensional parton cascade BAMPS. The main contributions stem from pQCD inspired bremsstrahlung. Comparisons to Au+Au data of the flow parameter v_2 as a function of participation number as well as the gluonic contribution to the nuclear modification factor R_AA for most central collisions are given. Also the shear viscosity to entropy ratio is dynamically…
We present a new definition of the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ in a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal expansion. We propose a boost-invariant definition of $\hat{q}$, which is proportional to the broadening of the angular variables $η$ (the pseudo-rapidity) and $ϕ$ (the azimuthal angle). We furthermore consider radiative corrections to $\hat{q}$ and find potentially large corrections enhanced by a double logarithm like the case of a static medium. But unlike for the static medium, these corrections are now local in (proper) time.
We study dependence of jet quenching on matter density, using "tomography" of the fireball provided by RHIC data on azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$ of high $p_t$ hadron yield at different centralities. Slicing the fireball into shells with constant (entropy) density, we derive a "layer-wise geometrical limit" $v_2^{max}$ which is indeed above the data $v_2<v_2^{max}$. Interestingly, the limit is reached only if quenching is dominated by shells with the entropy density exactly in the near-$T_c$ region. We show two models that simultaneously describe the high $p_t$ $v_2$ and $R_{AA}$ data and conclud…
We develop a holographic (bottom-up) gravity model for QCD to understand the connection between the peak in the trace anomaly and the magnitude of heavy quark energy loss in a strongly-coupled plasma. The potential of the scalar field on the gravity side is constructed to reproduce some properties of QCD at finite temperature and its parameters are constrained by fitting lattice gauge theory results. The energy loss of heavy quarks (as predicted by the holographic model) is found to be strongly sensitive to the medium properties.
We use our non-conformal holographic bottom-up model for QCD described in 1012.0116 to further study the effect of the QCD trace anomaly on the energy loss of both light and heavy quarks in a strongly coupled plasma. We compute the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ for bottom and charm quarks in an expanding plasma with Glauber initial conditions. We find that the maximum stopping distance of light quarks in a non-conformal plasma scales with the energy with a temperature (and energy) dependent effective power.
One of the important perturbative ("hard") probes of hot and dense QCD matter is the medium-induced energy loss of energetic partons, so called "jet quenching", which is predicted to be very different in cold nuclear matter and in QGP, and leads to a number of phenomena which are already seen in the RHIC data on the qualitative level. The inclusion of jet quenching and other important collective effects, such as radial and elliptic flows, in the existing Monte-Carlo models of relativistic heavy ion collisions is discussed. Some issues on the corresponding physical observables at RHIC and LHC e…
Recent advances in soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons have led to the development of a new method that gives a unified description of inclusive hadron production in reactions with nucleons and heavy nuclei. We show how this approach, based on the generalization of the DGLAP evolution equations to include final-state medium-induced parton showers, can be combined with initial-state effects for applications to jet quenching phenomenology. We demonstrate that the traditional parton energy loss calculations can be regarded as a special soft-gluon emission limit of the general QCD …
We review the recent developments in the theory of jet-quenching. First, we analyze the coherent vacuum cascade and incoherent medium-induced cascade separately. We then discuss the interplay between the two kinds of cascade and the resulting partial decoherence of the inner jet structure. Finally, we report on recent calculations of higher-order corrections. In particular, the dominant radiative corrections to jet observables that yield the renormalization of the jet-quenching parameter are addressed.
In this note, two important transport observables in the RHIC experiment, relaxation time constant and jet quenching parameter, are calculated from an AdS/QCD model. A quark moving in the viscous medium such as the Quark-Gluon-Plasma is modelled by an open string whose end point travels on the boundary of a deformed AdS_5 black hole. The correction introduced via the deformed AdS_5 is believed to help us better understand the data which is expected to be measured in the RHIC.
In the calculation of non-leptonic weak decay rates, a "mismatch" arises when the QCD evolution of the relevant weak hamiltonian down to hadronic scales is performed in unquenched QCD, but the hadronic matrix elements are then computed in (partially) quenched lattice QCD. This mismatch arises because the transformation properties of penguin operators under chiral symmetry change in the transition from unquenched to (partially) quenched QCD. Here we discuss QCD-penguin contributions to $ΔS=1$ matrix elements, and show that new low-energy constants contribute at leading order in chiral perturbat…
We study the phenomenon of transverse momentum broadening for a high-$p_T$ parton propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal expansion. We propose a boost-invariant description for this phenomenon, in which the broadening refers to the angular variables $η$ (the pseudo-rapidity) and $ϕ$ (the azimuthal angle). The jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ which enters this description depends upon the proper time alone. We furthermore consider radiative corrections to $\hat q$. As in the case of a static medium, we find potentially large corrections …
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the transverse momentum broadening distribution of an energetic quark or gluon propagating through dense QCD matter, in the large system size $L$ limit, taking into account radiative corrections in the double logarithmic approximation. Thanks to a connection between the evolution of the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ and the formation of traveling wave fronts in nonlinear physics, we obtain a formula for the $L$ dependence of the characteristic transverse momentum scale $Q_s$ of the distribution valid up to terms of order $1/\ln(L)$. We briefly discuss t…
We have calculated the quenching parameter, $\hat{q}$ in a model-independent way using the gauge-gravity duality. In earlier calculations, the geometry in the gravity side at finite temperature was usually taken as the pure AdS blackhole metric for which the dual gauge theory becomes conformally invariant unlike QCD. Therefore we use a metric which incorporates the fundamental quarks by embedding the coincident D7 branes in the Klebanov-Tseytlin background and a finite temperature is switched on by inserting a black hole into the background, known as OKS-BH metric. Further inclusion of an addi…
The effect of the complex phase of the fermion determinant is a key question related to the sign problem in finite-density QCD. Recently it has been shown that ignoring the complex phase -- the phase quenching -- does not change physics in a certain region of the phase diagram when a number of colors N_c is large. In this paper we study the effect of the phase quenching within the frameworks of effective models and holographic models. We show, in a unified manner, that the phase quenching gives exact results for any fermionic observables (e.g., chiral condensate) in the mean-field approximatio…
Finite-density QCD is difficult to study numerically because of the sign problem. We prove that, in a certain region of the phase diagram, the phase quenched approximation is exact to O(Nf/Nc). It is true for any physical observables. We also consider the implications for the lattice simulations and find a quantitative evidence for the validity of the phase quenching from existing lattice QCD results at Nc=3. Our results show that the phase-quench approximation is rather good already at Nc=3, and the 1/Nc correction can be incorporated by the phase reweighting method without suffering from the…
We compute the inclusive jet spectrum in the presence of a dense QCD medium by going beyond the single parton energy loss approximation. We show that higher-order corrections are important yielding large logarithmic contributions that must be resummed to all orders. This reflects the fact that jet quenching is sensitive to fluctuations of the jet substructure.
The physics program of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) has brought a unique insight into the hot and dense QCD matter created in such collisions, the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). Jet quenching, a collection of medium-induced modifications of the jets' internal structure that occur through their development in dense QCD matter, has a unique potential to assess the time structure of the produced medium. In this work, we perform an exploratory study to identify jet reclustering tools that can potentiate future QGP …
The phase transition and jet quenching parameter ${\hat q}$ have been investigated in the framework of dynamical holographic QCD model. It is found that both the trace anomaly and the ratio of the jet quenching parameter over cubic temperature ${\hat q}/T^3$ show a peak around the critical temperature $T_c$, and the ratio of jet quenching parameter over entropy density ${\hat q}/s$ sharply rises at $T_c$. This indicates that the jet quenching parameter can characterize the phase transition. The effect of jet quenching parameter enhancement around phase transition on nuclear modification factor…
We compute modifications to the jet spectrum in the presence of a dense medium. We show that in the large-$N_c$ approximation and at leading logarithmic accuracy the jet nuclear modification factor factorizes into a quenching factor associated to the total jet color charge and a Sudakov suppression factor which accounts for the energy loss of jet substructure fluctuations. This factor, called the jet collimator, implements the fact that subjets, that are not resolved by the medium, lose energy coherently as a single color charge, whereas resolved large angle fluctuations suffer more quenching.…
The modification of hard jets in dense matter has so far been described by four different formalisms based on perturbative QCD (pQCD). In these proceedings, we compare the various approximations made in these different schemes, especially those regarding the structure of the medium through which jets propagate. Following this, we highlight some of the major differences in the various physical processes contained in the different approaches.
We extend the calculation of radiative corrections to momentum broadening in a QCD medium to include processes where single scattering dominates over multiple soft scatterings. Our analysis focusses on processes that are enhanced by a potentially large double logarithmic contribution. We demonstrate that such double logarithmic contributions emerge in calculations of momentum broadening in dilute systems where only single scattering occurs. We show how the different regimes, multiple versus single scattering, constrain different parts of the phase space.
Recently, we pointed out that chiral transformation properties of penguin operators change in the transition from unquenched to (partially) quenched QCD. As a consequence, new operators appear in (partially) quenched QCD penguins, introducing ambiguities which should be considered a quenching artifact. Here we discuss more specifically the effects of this phenomenon on the quenched Delta I=1/2 K to pi pi amplitude, and in particular, its potential numerical effect on recent lattice estimates for epsilon-prime over epsilon.
We investigate jet quenching of virtual gluons and thermalization of a strongly-coupled plasma with a non-zero chemical potential via the gauge/gravity duality. By tracking a charged shell falling in an asymptotic AdS$_{d+1}$ background for $d=3$ and $d=4$, which is characterized by the AdS-Reissner-Nordström-Vaidya (AdS-RN-Vaidya) geometry, we extract a thermalization time of the medium with a non-zero chemical potential. In addition, we study the falling string as the holographic dual of a virtual gluon in the AdS-RN-Vaidya spacetime. The stopping distance of the massless particle representi…
We discuss the properties of 't Hooft vertices in partially quenched and rooted versions of QCD in the continuum. These theories have a physical subspace, equivalent to ordinary QCD, that is contained within a larger space that includes many unphysical correlation functions. We find that the 't Hooft vertices in the physical subspace have the expected form, despite the presence of unphysical 't Hooft vertices appearing in correlation functions that have an excess of valence quarks (or ghost quarks). We resolve an apparent paradox that arises when one uses rooted staggered fermions to study one…
$\hat q$ is the average squared transverse momentum transfer per unit length to a high-energy particle traversing a QCD medium such as a quark-gluon plasma. We find the (UV-regulated) value of $\hat q$ to leading order in the weak coupling limit, $\alphas(T) \ll 1$. We then use this value to generalize previous analytic results on the gluon bremsstrahlung and pair production rates for massless high-energy particles in a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma, at next-to-leading logarithmic order.
We develop a framework to simulate jet quenching in nuclear environments on a quantum computer. The formulation is based on the light-front Hamiltonian dynamics of QCD. The Hamiltonian consists of three parts relevant for jet quenching studies: kinetic, diffusion and splitting terms. In the basis made up of $n$-particle states in momentum space, the kinetic Hamiltonian is diagonal. Matrices representing the diffusion and splitting parts are sparse. The diffusion part of the Hamiltonian depends on classical background gauge fields, which need to be sampled classically before constructing quantu…
We discuss average properties of the gluon cascade generated by an energetic parton propagating through a dense QCD medium. The cascade is mostly made with relatively soft gluons, whose production is not suppressed by the LPM effect. Unlike for usual QCD cascades in the vacuum, where the typical splittings are very asymmetric (soft and collinear), the medium-induced branchings are quasi-democratic and lead to wave turbulence. This results in a very efficient mechanism for the transport of energy at large angles with respect to the jet axis, which might explain the di-jet asymmetry observed in …

Jet quenching and more generally physics at high transverse momentum P_T scales is a cornerstone of the heavy-ion physics program at the LHC. In this work, the current understanding of jet quenching in terms of a QCD shower evolution being modified by the surrounding medium is reviewed along with the evidence for this picture from light parton high P_T observables. Conceptually, the same QCD shower description should also be relevant for heavy quarks, but with several important modifications introduced by the quark masses. Thus especially in the limit of small jet energy over quark mass E_jet/…
We calculate the bulk viscosity, drag force and jet quenching parameter in Improved Holographic QCD. We find that the bulk viscosity rises near the phase transition but does not exceed the shear viscosity. The drag force shows the effects of asymptotic freedom both as a function of velocity and temperature. It indicates diffusion times of heavy quarks in rough agreement with data. The jet quenching parameter values computed via the light-like Wilson loop are in the lower range suggested by data.
The study of the structure of strongly interacting dense matter via hard jets is reviewed. High momentum partons produced in hard collisions produce a shower of gluons prior to undergoing the non-perturbative process of hadronization. In the presence of a dense medium this shower is modified due to scattering of the various partons off the constituents in the medium. The modified pattern of the final detected hadrons is then a probe of the structure of the medium as perceived by the jet. Starting from the factorization paradigm developed for the case of particle collisions, we review the basic…
The quenching of minijet (particles with $p_T>> T, Λ_{QCD}$) in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions has been one of the main prediction and discovery at RHIC. We analyze the correlation between different observables like the nuclear modification factor $\Rapt$, the elliptic flow and the ratio of quark to gluon suppressions. We show that the temperature (or entropy density) dependence of the in-medium energy loss strongly affects the relation among these observables. In particular the large elliptic flow and the nearly equal $\Rapt$ of quarks and gluons can be accounted for only if the ener…
