Black holes found in binaries move at very high velocities relative to our own reference frame and can accelerate due to the emission of gravitational radiation. Here, we investigate the numerical stability and late-time behavior of linear scalar perturbations in accelerating black holes described by the $C-$metric. We identify a family of quasinormal modes associated with the photon surface and a brand new family of purely imaginary modes associated with the boost parameter of the accelerating black hole spacetime. When the accelerating black hole is charged, we find a third family of modes which dominates the ringdown waveform near extremality. Our frequency and time domain analysis indicate that such spacetimes are stable under scalar fluctuations, while the late-time behavior follows an exponential decay law, dominated by quasinormal modes. This result is in contrast with the common belief that such perturbations, for black holes without a cosmological constant, always have a power-law cutoff. In this sense, our results suggest that the asymptotic structure of black hole backgrounds does not always dictate how radiative fields behave at late times.
In this paper, we investigate analytically the level space of the imaginary part of quasinormal frequencies for a black hole with a deficit solid angle and quintessence-like matter by the Padmanabhan's method \cite{Padmanabhan}. Padmanabhan presented a method to study analytically the imaginary part of quasinormal frequencies for a class of spherically symmetric spacetimes including Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes which has an evenly spaced structure. The results show that the level space of scalar and gravitational quasinormal frequencies for this kind of black holes only depend on the su…
We have studied the quasinormal modes and the late-time tail behaviors of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations in the Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a cosmic string. Although the metric is locally identical to that of the Schwarzschild black hole so that the presence of the string will not imprint in the motion of test particles, we found that quasinormal modes and the late-time tails can reflect physical signatures of the cosmic string. Compared with the scalar and electromagnetic fields, the gravitational perturbation decays slower, which could be more interesting to …
In this paper, we investigate the evolution of classical wave propagation in the canonical acoustic black hole by numerical method and discuss the details of tail phenomenon. The oscillating frequency and damping time scale both increase with the angular momentum $l$. For the lower $l$, numerical results show the lowest WKB approximation gives the most reliable result. We also find that time scale of the interim region from ringing to tail is not affected obviously by changing $l$.
The $C$-metric is a boost-symmetric spacetime solution to the vacuum Einstein field equations which describes black holes that are uniformly accelerated under the tension of a cosmic string. Only recently the thermodynamics of accelerating black holes and their modal stability against neutral scalar perturbations were concisely established. The generalization of accelerating black holes to incorporate an electric charge, namely the charged $C$-metric, possess three distinct families of quasinormal mode frequencies; the complex photon surface quasinormal modes associated with unstable null part…
It is well known that the charged scalar perturbations of the Reissner-Nordstrom metric will decay slower at very late times than the neutral ones, thereby dominating in the late time signal. We show that at the stage of quasinormal ringing, on the contrary, the neutral perturbations will decay slower for RN, RNAdS and dilaton black holes. The QN frequencies of the nearly extreme RN black hole have the same imaginary parts (damping times) for charged and neutral perturbations. An explanation of this fact is not clear but, possibly, is connected with the Choptuik scaling.
We compute characteristic (quasinormal) frequencies corresponding to decay of a massive charged scalar field in a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole background. It proves that, contrary to the behavior at very late times, at the stage of quasinormal ringing the neutral perturbations will damp slower than the charged ones. In the limit of the extremal black hole the damping rate of charged and neutral perturbations coincides. Possible connection of this with the critical collapse in a massive scalar electrodynamics is discussed.
In this paper, we study the quasinormal modes of the massless Dirac field for charged black holes in Rastall gravity. The spherically symmetric black hole solutions in question are characterized by the presence of a power-Maxwell field, surrounded by the quintessence fluid. The calculations are carried out by employing the WKB approximations up to the thirteenth order, as well as the matrix method. The temporal evolution of the quasinormal modes is investigated by using the finite difference method. Through numerical simulations, the properties of the quasinormal frequencies are analyzed, incl…
In this paper, we study the quasinormal mode and late-time tail of charged massless scalar perturbations of a black hole in the generalized Rastall gravity. The black hole metric in question is spherically symmetric, accompanied by a power-Maxwell field surrounded by a quintessence fluid. It is shown that the massless scalar field, when {\it dressed up} with the magnetic field, acquires an effective mass which, in turn, significantly affects the properties of the resultant quasinormal oscillations and late-time tails. To be specific, the quasinormal frequencies become distorted and might even …
String theory is a promising candidate for a fundamental quantum theory of all interactions including Einstein gravity. Some solutions in string theory can be interpreted as black holes. Using the semi-analytic method and WKB method, the quasinormal modes(QNMs)of 1+1 dimensional black hole in string theory are studied. The QNMs of 1+3 dimensional black hole in string theory are also calculated through numerical approach. The numerical investigation has shown that the late time gravitational oscillation of the black hole under an external perturbaton is dominated by certain QNMs.
The waveforms from binary black hole mergers include inspiral, merger, and ringdown parts. Usually, the inspiral waveform can be obtained by calibrating from post-Newtonian approximation; The merger and ringdown ones can be gotten from the quasinormal modes with black hole perturbation theory. However, for more general black holes, the calculation of the quasinormal modes is not trivial. In this paper we use the photon sphere to get the quasinormal modes of spinning black holes. Then we connect the ringdown wave with the inspiral part to get full waveforms and compare with the ones from numeri…
So far analysis of the quasinormal spectrum of a massive charged scalar field in the black hole background has been limited by the regime of small μM and qQ, where μ, q (M, Q) are mass and charge of the field (black hole). Here we shall present a comprehensive picture of quasinormal modes, late-time tails and stability of a massive charged scalar field around Kerr-Newman black holes for any physically meaningful values of the parameters. We shall show that despite presence of the two mechanisms of superradiance (owing to black hole's rotation and charge) and the massive term creating growing b…
Recently it has been argued that the phantom thin-shell wormholes matched with the Schwarzschild space-time near the Schwarzschild radius ring like Schwarzschild black holes at early times, but differently at late times (arXiv:1602.07309). Here we consider perturbations of the wormhole which was constructed without thin-shells: the Bronnikov-Ellis wormhole supported by the phantom matter and electromagnetic field. This wormhole solution is known to be stable under specific equation of state of the phantom matter. We show that if one does not use the above thin-shell matching, the wormhole, dep…
Quasinormal ringing of acoustic black holes in Laval nozzles is discussed. The equation for sounds in a transonic flow is written into a Schrödinger-type equation with a potential barrier, and the quasinormal frequencies are calculated semianalytically. From the results of numerical simulations, it is shown that the quasinormal modes are actually excited when the transonic flow is formed or slightly perturbed, as well as in the real black hole case. In an actual experiment, however, the purely-outgoing boundary condition will not be satisfied at late times due to the wave reflection at the end…
Here we show that the phenomenon of arbitrarily long-lived quasinormal modes (called quasiresonances) of a massive scalar field in the vicinity of a black hole is not an artifact of the test field approximation, but takes place also when the (derivative) coupling of a scalar field with the Einstein tensor is taken into consideration. We observe that at large coupling and high multipole numbers, the growing modes appear in the spectrum, which are responsible for the eikonal instability of the field. For small coupling, when the configuration is stable, there appear the purely imaginary quasinor…
We consider the field equations for a flat FRW cosmological model, in a generic $f(R)$ gravity model and cast them into a, completely normalized-dimensionless, system of O.D.Es for the scale factor and the function $f(R)$, with respect to the scalar curvature $R$. It is shown that under reasonable assumptions one can produce simple analytical and numerical solutions describing bouncing cosmological models where in addition there are late-time accelerating. Possibility of extending these results is briefly discussed.
We study the late-time behaviour of a dynamically perturbed rapidly rotating black hole. Considering an extreme Kerr black hole, we show that the large number of virtually undamped quasinormal modes (that exist for nonzero values of the azimuthal eigenvalue m) combine in such a way that the field (as observed at infinity) oscillates with an amplitude that decays as 1/t at late times. This is in clear contrast with the standard late time power-law fall-off familiar from studies of non-rotating black holes. This long-lived oscillating ``tail'' will, however, not be present for non-extreme (presu…
The purpose of this paper is to study quasinormal modes (QNM) of a regular black hole with a cosmological constant due to scalar perturbations. A detailed study of the QNM frequencies for the massless scalar field were done by varying the parameters of the theory such as the mass, magnetic charge, cosmological constant, and the spherical harmonic index. We have employed the sixth order WKB approximation to compute the QNM frequencies. We have also proved analytically that the $l=0$ mode for the massless field reach a constant value at late times. We have approximated the near-extreme regular-d…
We develop a new method to study the thermalization of time dependent retarded Green function in conformal field theories holographically dual to thin shell AdS Vaidya space times. The method relies on using the information of all time derivatives of the Green function at the shell and then evolving it for later times. The time derivatives of the Green function at the shell is given in terms of a recursion formula. Using this method we obtain analytic results for short time thermalization of the Green function. We show that the late time behaviour of the Green function is determined by the fir…
Detailed knowledge about equilibration processes is of interest for various fields of physics, including heavy ion collision experiments and quantum quenched condensed matter systems. We study the approach to equilibrium at late times within two types of strongly coupled thermal systems in 3+1 dimensions: systems in the presence of (i) a non-zero charge density, or (ii) a magnetic field at vanishing charge density. Utilizing the gauge/gravity correspondence, we map the aforementioned problem to the computation of quasinormal frequencies around two particular classes of black branes within the …
The rapid advancement of gravitational wave astronomy in recent years has paved the way for the burgeoning development of black hole spectroscopy, which enhances the possibility of testing black holes by their quasinormal modes (QNMs). In this paper, the axial gravitational perturbations and the QNM frequencies of black holes in the hybrid metric-Palatini gravity (HMPG) are investigated. The HMPG theory is characterized by a dynamical scalar degree of freedom and is able to explain the late-time accelerating expansion of the universe without introducing any \textit{ad hoc} screening mechanism …
We investigate the nonlinear evolution of black hole ringdown in the framework of higher-order metric perturbation theory. By solving the initial-value problem of a simplified nonlinear field model analytically as well as numerically, we find that (i) second-order quasinormal modes (QNMs) are indeed excited at frequencies different from those of first-order QNMs, as predicted recently. We also find serendipitously that (ii) late-time evolution is dominated by a new type of power-law tail. This ``second-order power-law tail'' decays more slowly than any late-time tails known in the first-order …
We investigate the late-time behavior of the massive vector field in the background of the Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes. For Schwarzschild black hole, at intermediately late times the massive vector field is represented by three functions with different decay law $Ψ_{0} \sim t^{-(\ell + 3/2)} \sin{m t}$, $Ψ_{1} \sim t^{-(\ell + 5/2)} \sin{m t}$, $Ψ_{2} \sim t^{-(\ell + 1/2)} \sin{m t}$, while at asymptotically late times the decay law $Ψ\sim t^{-5/6} \sin{(m t)}$ is universal, and does not depend on the multipole number $\ell$. Together with previous study of massive s…
We reformulate the Chern-Simons modified gravity in the metric-affine formalism, by enlarging the Pontryagin density with homothetic curvature terms which restore projective invariance without spoiling topologicity. The latter is then violated by promoting the coupling of the Chern-Simons term to a (pseudo)-scalar field. We derive the perturbative solutions for torsion and nonmetricity from the background fields, and we describe the dynamics for the resulting linearized metric and the scalar fields in a Schwarzschild black hole background. Then, by adopting numerical techniques we compute the …
The extendibility of spacetime and the existence of weak solutions to the Einstein field equations beyond Cauchy horizons, is a crucial ingredient to examine the limits of General Relativity. Strong Cosmic Censorship serves as a firewall for gravitation by demanding inextendibility of spacetime beyond the Cauchy horizon. For asymptotically flat spacetimes, the predominance of the blueshift instability and the subsequent formation of a mass-inflation singularity at the Cauchy horizon have, so far, substantiated the conjecture. Accelerating black holes, described by the $C-$metric, are exact sol…
Many properties of black holes can be studied using acoustic analogues in the laboratory through the propagation of sound waves. We investigate in detail sound wave propagation in a rotating acoustic (2+1)-dimensional black hole, which corresponds to the ``draining bathtub'' fluid flow. We compute the quasinormal mode frequencies of this system and discuss late-time power-law tails. Due to the presence of an ergoregion, waves in a rotating acoustic black hole can be superradiantly amplified. We compute superradiant reflection coefficients and instability timescales for the acoustic black hole …
Black hole (BH) solution in the conformal Weyl gravity is a generalization of the Schwarzschild spacetime which includes two additional constants appearing when integrating the third order differential equations for gravitational field. One constant looks like the effective cosmological constant providing the de Sitter asymptotic of the solution. The other constant allows one to describe flat rotation of galaxies without introducing of the dark matter. Here we show that the effective "dark matter" term in the metric function drastically changes the asymptotic behavior of the evolution of the w…
Horizons of black branes have an associated entropy current with non-negative divergence. We compute this divergence in a late-time transseries expansion for an inhomogeneous system evolving towards a maximally symmetric asymptotically anti-de Sitter black brane. The horizon area equilibrates on half the time-scale set by the dominant quasinormal mode and we find a simple analytic expression for this evolution purely in terms of the background and the quasinormal mode frequencies. This computation does not require a gradient expansion and is thus non-perturbative in momenta. We generalize this…
The well-known duality between quasinormal modes of any stationary, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat or de Sitter black hole and parameters of the circular null geodesic was initially claimed for gravitational and test field perturbations. According to this duality the real and imaginary parts of the $\ell \gg n$ quasinormal mode (where $\ell$ and $n$ are multipole and overtone numbers respectively) are multiples of the frequency and instability timescale of the circular null geodesics respectively. Later it was shown that the duality is guaranteed only for test fields and may be …
We study charged scalar perturbations in the background of a regular magnetic black hole. In this case, the charged scalar perturbation does not result in superradiance. By using careful time-domain analysis, we show that the charge of scalar field can change the real part of quasinormal frequency, but has little impact on the imaginary part of quasinormal frequency and the behavior of the late-time tail. Therefore, the regular magnetic black hole may be stable under the perturbations of charged scalar field at the linear level.
