The first model based on the effective medium approach is used to predict the metasurface reflectivity. The second model is the Bloch wave dispersion model for the same structure understood as a two-dimensional transmission line metamaterial. The latter model is used to study …

The flatness, compactness and high-capacity data storage capability make metasurfaces well-suited for holographic information recording and generation. However, most of the metasurface holograms are static, not allowing a dynamic modification of the phase profile after fabrication. Here, we propose and demonstrate a dynamic metasurface hologram by utilizing hierarchical reaction kinetics of magnesium upon a hydrogenation/dehydrogenation process. The metasurface is composed of composite gold/magnesium V-shaped nanoantennas as building blocks, leading to a reconfigurable phase profile in a hydro…
We demonstrate reconfigurable phase-only computer-generated metasurface holograms with one, two, or three image planes operating in the visible regime on a stretchable polydimethylsiloxane substrate. Stretching the substrate enlarges the hologram image and changes the location of the image plane. Upon stretching, these devices can switch the displayed holographic image between multiple distinct images. This work opens up the possibilities for stretchable metasurface holograms as flat devices for dynamically reconfigurable optical communication and display. It also confirms that metasurfaces on…

We harness non-volatile, amorphous-crystalline transitions in the chalcogenide phase-change medium germanium antimony telluride (GST) to realize optically-switchable, all-dielectric metamaterials. Nanostructured, subwavelength-thickness films of GST present high-quality resonances that are spectrally shifted by laser-induced structural transitions, providing reflectivity and transmission switching contrast ratios of up to 5:1 (7 dB) at visible/near-infrared wavelengths selected by design.
Metasurfaces offer the potential to control light propagation at the nanoscale for applications in both free-space and surface-confined geometries. Existing metasurfaces frequently utilize metallic polaritonic elements with high absorption losses, and/or fixed geometrical designs that serve a single function. Here we overcome these limitations by demonstrating a reconfigurable hyperbolic metasurface comprising of a heterostructure of isotopically enriched hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in direct contact with the phase-change material (PCM) vanadium dioxide (VO2). The device is based on the critical transition of an anisotropic metallic checkerboard, which realizes the deep modulation and simultaneous design of the switchable states. After verifying the functionality of the ideally designed device in a simulation, we tune its structural par…
All-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of arrays of nanostructured high-refractive-index materials, typically Si, are re-writing what is achievable in terms of the manipulation of light. Such devices support very strong magnetic, as well as electric, resonances, and are free of ohmic losses that severely limit the performance of their plasmonic counterparts. However, the functionality of dielectric-based metasurfaces is fixed-by-design, i.e. the optical response is fixed by the size, arrangement and index of the nanoresonators. A far wider range of applications could be addressed if active/rec…
Actively tunable and reconfigurable wavefront shaping by optical metasurfaces poses a significant technical challenge often requiring unconventional materials engineering and nanofabrication. Most wavefront-shaping metasurfaces can be considered 'local' in that their operation depends on the responses of individual meta-units. In contrast, 'nonlocal' metasurfaces function based on the modes supported by many adjacent meta-units, resulting in sharp spectral features but typically no spatial control of the outgoing wavefront. Recently, nonlocal metasurfaces based on quasi-bound states in the con…

The metalens can continuously vary the focal length by rotating either of the two metasurfaces along its optical axis without changing any other conditions. More importantly, because of the polarization dependence of the geometric meta…

Varifocal lenses, conventionally implemented by changing the axial distance between multiple optical elements, have a wide range of applications in imaging and optical beam scanning. Here, we demonstrate tunable metasurface doublets, based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), with more than 60 diopters (abou…
