Fast timing detectors are an essential element in the experimental setup for time-of-flight (ToF) mass measurements of unstable nuclei. We have upgraded the scintillator detectors used in experiments at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) by increasing the number of photomultiplier tubes that read out their light signals to four per detector, and characterized them in a test experiment with $^{48}$Ca beam at the NSCL. The new detectors achieved a time resolution ($σ$) of 7.5 ps. We systematically investigated different factors that affect their timing performance. In addition, we evaluated the ability of positioning the hitting points on the scintillator using the timing information and obtained a resolution ($σ$) below 1 mm for well-defined beam spots.
A new method for directional fast neutron detection is proposed based on a neutron time projection chamber (TPC) and position-sensitive plastic scintillation detectors. The detection system can efficiently locate the approximate location of a hot spot with 4π field-of-view using only the neutron TPC. Then, the system generates a high-resolution image of the hot spot using selected coincidence events in the TPC and the scintillation detectors. A prototype was built and tested using a Cf-252 source. An efficiency of 7.1x10-3 was achieved for fast searching. The angular resolution was 7.8° (full …
A 760 $\times$ 760 $\times$ 30 mm$^3$ plastic scintillation detector viewed by photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) from four corners has been developed, and the detector has been tested with cosmic rays and $γ$ rays. A position-independent effective time T$_{eff}$ has been found, indicating this detector can be used as a TOF detector. The hit position can also be reconstructed by the time from four corners. A TOF resolution of 236 ps and a position resolution of 48 mm have been achieved, and the detection efficiency has also been investigated.
As a way to lower the cost of plastic scintillation detectors, commercially available polystyrene pellets have been used in the production of scintillating materials that can be extruded into different profiles. The selection of raw materials is discussed. Two techniques to add wavelength shifting dopants to polystyrene pellets and to extrude plastic scintillating strips are described. Data on light yield and transmittance measurements are presented.
A neutron time projection chamber can locate the approximate direction of a neutron hot spot with high efficiency and a 4π field of view. The angular resolution can be significantly improved by adding several plastic scintillation detectors and using coincidence events. The specific performances of such a coincidence imaging system are studied based on theoretical calculations and experimental results. The calculated value of the angular resolution is approximately 2° for the current system, which agrees well with the experimental results and sets an upper limit for the angular resolution of t…
The timing characteristics of scintillators must be understood in order to determine which applications they are appropriate for. Polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) and polyethylene teraphthalate (PET) are common plastics with uncommon scintillation properties. Here, we report the timing characteristics of PEN and PET, determined by exciting them with 120 GeV protons. The test beam was provided by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and the scintillators were tested at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. PEN and PET are found to have dominant decay constants of 34.91 ns and 6.78 ns, respectively.
Plastic scintillation detectors for Time-of-Flight (TOF) measurements are almost essential for event-by-event identification of relativistic rare isotopes. In this work, a pair of plastic scintillation detectors of 50 $\times$ 50 $\times$ 3$^{t}$ mm$^3$ and 80 $\times$ 100 $\times$ 3$^{t}$ mm$^3$ have been set up at the external target facility (ETF), Institute of Modern Physics. Their time, energy and position responses are measured with $^{18}$O primary beam at 400 MeV/nucleon. After the off-line walk-effect and position corrections, the time resolution of the two detectors are determined to…
Timing-pick up detectors with excellent timing resolutions are essential in many modern nuclear physics experiments. Aiming to develop a Time-Of-Flight system with precision down to about 10 ps, we have made a systematic study of the timing characteristic of TOF detectors, which consist of several combinations of plastic scintillators and photomultiplier tubes. With the conventional electronics, the best timing resolution of about 5.1 ps (σ) has been achieved for detectors with an area size of 3x1 cm2. It is found that for data digitalization a combination of TAC and ADC can achieve a better t…
Plastic scintillators detectors (PSDs) have been studied as dosimeters, since they provide a cost-effective alternative to conventional ionization chambers. Measurement and analysis of energy dependency were performed on a Siemens Mammomat tomograph for two different peak kilovoltages: 26 kV and 35 kV. Both PSD displayed good linearity for each energy considered and almost no energy dependence.
A new type of neutron detector, named Stack Structure Solid organic Scintillator (S$^4$), consisting of multi-layer plastic scintillators with capability to suppress low-energy $γ$ rays under high-counting rate has been constructed and tested. To achieve $\it{n}$-$γ$ discrimination, we exploit the difference in the ranges of the secondary charged particles produced by the interactions of neutrons and $γ$ rays in the scintillator material. The thickness of a plastic scintillator layer was determined based on the results of Monte Carlo simulations using the Geant4 toolkit. With layer thicknesses…
Conceiving the possibility of using plastic scintillator bars as robust detectors for antineutrino detection for the remote reactor monitoring and nuclear safeguard application we study expected basic performance by Monte Carlo simulation. We present preliminary results for a 1 m3 highly segmented detector made of 100 rectangular scintillation bars forming an array which is sandwiched at both sides by the continuous light guides enabling light sharing between all photo detectors. Light detection efficiency is calculated for several light collection configurations, considering different scintil…
Results of the measurements with cosmic muons for the light yield of 2-meter long extruded scintillation bar (strip) as a function of distance for different options for light collection technique are presented. Scintillation strip cross section geometry was a triangle made on polystyrene plastic scintillator with dopants of 2% PTP and 0.03% POPOP, extruded with 2.6 mm diameter hole and produced at ISMA (Kharkov, Ukraine). It was shown that the insertion of the optical transparent resin (BC 600 or CKTN MED(E)) by special technique into the co-extruded hole with 1.0 mm or 1.2 mm wave-length shif…

The Readout system contains dual sampling channels that can supply sampling rate up to 1 GSPS, 14-Bit vertical resolution and adequate effective number of bits (9.7 Bits at 10 MHz), which is optimum for the discrimination of the minimal difference between alpha/beta signals. Moreover, the system is based on a ZYNQ SoC which provides high data throughput speed, low latency and excellent flexibility. As …
Plastic scintillation detectors represent an efficient, cost-effective, customizable solution for assessment of gamma radiation fields in the context of nuclear security, environmental radiation survey, radiological and nuclear incidents response (RNe) and dosimetry for radiation protection purposes. Solid state light readout technologies such as Silicon Photomultiplier diodes (SiPM) are characterized by low operational voltage, mechanical robustness, compact dimensions, and fast pulse rise-time. Due to these intrinsic advantages, Silicon Photomultiplier diodes have been progressively replacin…
The detection of 200-1000 MeV neutrons requires large amounts, $\sim$100 cm, of detector material because of the long nuclear interaction length of these particles. In the example of the NeuLAND neutron time-of-flight detector at FAIR, this is accomplished by using 3000 monolithic scintillator bars of 270$\times$5$\times$5 cm$^3$ size made of a fast plastic. Each bar is read out on the two long ends, and the needed time resolution of $σ_t$ $<$ 150 ps is reached with fast timing photomultipliers. In the present work, it is investigated whether silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) photosensors can be …
START, a high-efficiency and low-noise scintillation detector for ionizing particles, was developed for the purpose of creating a high-granular system for triggering cosmic muons. Scintillation light in START is detected by MRS APDs (Avalanche Photo-Diodes with Metal-Resistance-Semiconductor structure), operated in the Geiger mode, which have 1 mm^2 sensitive areas. START is assembled from a 15 x 15 x 1 cm^3 scintillating plastic plate, two MRS APDs and two pieces of wavelength-shifting optical fiber stacked in circular coils inside the plastic. The front-end electronic card is mounted directl…
Liquid xenon offers several features, which make it suitable for applications in nuclear medicine, such as high scintillation yield and fast scintillation decay time. Moreover, being a continuous medium with a uniform response, liquid xenon allows one to avoid most of the geometrical distortions of conventional detectors based on scintillating crystals. In this paper, we describe how these properties have motivated the development of a novel concept for positron emission tomography scanners with Time-Of-Flight measurement, which combines a liquid xenon scintillating volume and silicon photomul…
Plastic scintillators that can discriminate between gamma rays, fast neutrons, and thermal neutrons were synthesized and characterized while considering the balance between processing and performance at the kilogram scale. These trade-offs were necessitated by the inclusion of 0.1 wt. % lithium-6 to enable detection of thermal neutrons. The synthesis and processing of these plastic scintillators on the kilogram scale required consideration of many factors. First, a comonomer (methacrylic acid) was used to solubilize salts of lithium-6, which allow for a thermal-neutron capture reaction that pr…
A new timing detector measuring ~50 MeV/c positrons is under development for the MEG II experiment, aiming at a time resolution $σ_t \sim 30~\mathrm{ps}$. The resolution is expected to be achieved by measuring each positron time with multiple counters made of plastic scintillator readout by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the time resolution for ~50 MeV/c positrons using prototype counters. Counters with dimensions of $90\times 40\times 5~\mathrm{mm}^3$ readout by six SiPMs (three on each $40\times 5~\mathrm{mm}^2$ plane) were built with SiPMs from …
An air shower array of seven plastic scintillation detectors has been built and commissioned at an altitude of 2200 meter above sea level in the Eastern Himalayas (Darjeeling). Continuous measurement of shower rate using this array is going on since the end of January, 2018. The method of measurement and experimental results are presented in this article.
In this work we attempt to establish the best time resolution attainable with a scintillation counter consisting of a plastic scintillator read out by a Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiode. The measured time resolution is inversely proportional to the square root of the energy deposited in the scintillator, and scales to 18ps (sigma) at 1MeV. This result competes with the best ones reported for photomultiplier tubes.
A novel plastic scintillator, referred to as J-PET scintillator, has been developed for the application in the digital positron emission tomography (PET). The novelty of the concept lies in application of the 2-(4-styrylphenyl)benzoxazole as a wavelength shifter. To date, the chemical compound has not been used as scintillator additive. A role of wavelength shifter is to shift the scintillation spectrum towards longer wavelengths making it more suitable for applications in scintillators of long strips geometry because of larger attenuation length, and light detection with digital silicon photo…
A novel algorithm for the discrimination of neutron and γ-ray with wavelet transform modulus maximum (WTMM) in an organic scintillation has been investigated. Voltage pulses arising from a BC501A organic liquid scintillation detector in a mixed radiation field have been recorded with a fast digital sampling oscilloscope. The performances of most pulse shape discrimination methods in scintillation detection systems using time-domain features of the pulses are affected intensively by noise. However, the WTMM method using frequency-domain features exhibits a strong insensitivity to noise and can …
The NUCLEUS experiment aims at measuring the coherent elastic scattering of nuclear reactor antineutrinos off nuclei using cryogenic calorimeters. Operating at an overburden of 3m.w.e., muon-induced backgrounds are expected to be dominant. It is therefore essential to develop an efficient muon veto, with a detection efficiency of more than 99%. This will be realized in NUCLEUS through a compact cube assembly of plastic scintillator panels. In order to prevent a large unshielded area where the cryostat intersects the shielding arrangement without unnecessarily increasing the induced detector de…
This paper reports a series of measurements that characterize the directional dependence of the scintillation response of crystalline melt-grown and solution-grown stilbene to incident DT and DD neutrons. These measurements give the amplitude and pulse shape dependence on the proton recoil direction over one hemisphere of the crystal, confirming and extending previous results in the literature for melt-grown stilbene and providing the first measurements for solution-grown stilbene. In similar measurements of liquid and plastic detectors, no directional dependence was observed, confirming the h…
A time-of-flight system with a plastic scintillator coupled to photomultipliers is developed for the external target facility (ETF). This system can satisfy the requirement of an ultrahigh vacuum ($\sim 10^{-9}$ mbar), a high counting rate ($\sim 10^{6}$ particles per second) and a magnetic field environment. In the beam test experiment, a total time resolution of 580 ps FWHM was obtained for the whole system, and nuclei with a mass of up to 80 could be identified using this system.
Measurement of Time Resolution of Scintillation Detectors with EQR-15 Silicon Photodetectors for the Time-of-Flight Neutron Detector of the BM@N Experiment
Time of flight of a minimum ionizing particle along a fixed base has been measured with a 100 ps accuracy by means of a Dielectric Resistive Plate Chamber (DRPC) with 4 x 0.3 mm gas gaps. DRPC timing characteristics have been studied with different applied voltages, discriminating thresholds and beam intensities. It may be stated that the time-of-flight resolution of gaseous detectors developed within the ALICE experiment has reached the level of the best known scintillation counters.
The fast scintillation decay time and the high scintillation yield of liquid xenon makes it an appropriate material for nuclear medicine. Moreover, being a continuous medium with a uniform response, liquid xenon allows one to avoid most of the geometrical distortions of conventional detectors based on scintillating crystals. In this paper, we describe how these properties have motivated the development of a novel concept for positron emission tomography scanners with Time-Of-Flight measurement, which uses liquid xenon as a scintillating material and silicon photomultipliers as sensors. A new type of a trigger-scintillation counter array designed for the MTV experiment at TRIUMF-ISAC has been developed, which uses aluminum-metallized film tape for wrapping to achieve the required assembling precision of $\pm$0.5 mm. The MTV experiment uses a cylindrical drift chamber (CDC) as the main electron-tracking detector. The barrel-type trigger counter is placed inside the CDC to generate a trigger signal using 1 mm thick, 300 mm long thin plastic scintillation counters. Detection efficiency and light attenuation compared with conventional wrapping materials are studied.
The discovery of scintillation in the blue regime from polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), a commonly used high-performance industrial polyester plastic, has sparked considerable interest from the physics community as a new type of plastic scintillator material. This observation in addition to its good mechanical and radiopurity properties makes PEN an attractive candidate as an active structure scintillator for low-background physics experiments. This paper reports on investigations of its potential in terms of production tests of custom made tiles and various scintillation light output measureme…
Plastic scintillator detectors have been studied as dosimeters, since they provide a cost-effective alternative to conventional ionization chambers. On the other hand, several articles have reported undesired response dependencies on beam energy and temperature, which enhances the necessity to determine appropriate correction factors. In this work, we studied the light yield temperature dependency of four plastic scintillators (BCF-10, BCF-60, BC-404 and RP-200A) and two clear fibers (BCF-98 and SK-80). Measurements were made using a 50 kVp X-ray beam to produce the scintillation and/or radiol…
We developed a new sub-nanosecond time-resolved instrument to study the dynamics of UV-visible luminescence under high stopping power heavy ion irradiation. We applied our instrument, called SPORT, on a fast plastic scintillator (BC-400) irradiated with 27-MeV Ar ions having high mean electronic stopping power of 2.6 MeV/μm. As a consequence of increasing permanent radiation damages with increasing ion fluence, our investigations reveal a degradation of scintillation intensity together with, thanks to the time-resolved measurement, a decrease in the decay constant of the scintillator. This com…
Calibration of three scintillators (EJ232Q, BC422Q and EJ410) in a time-of-flight (TOF) arrangement using a laser drive-neutron source is presented. The three plastic scintillator detectors were calibrated with gamma insensitive bubble detector spectrometers, which were absolutely calibrated over a wide range of neutron energies ranging from sub MeV to 20 MeV. A typical set of data obtained simultaneously by the detectors are shown, measuring the neutron spectrum emitted from a petawatt laser irradiated thin foil.
Plastic scintillators are widely used in particle detectors when precise timing information is required. As a basis for comparing different detectors we use such a characteristic as the time resolution per 1MeV detected energy, i.e. the expected time resolution assuming the deposited energy in the scintillator equals to 1MeV and all the scintillation light is collected to the photosensor. In this work we measure this parameter with BC422 plastic scintillator read out by different SiPMs. The best obtained value is about 6ps, which is almost a factor of 3 better compared to our earlier result fr…
The response of a NE-213 liquid-scintillator detector has been measured using tagged neutrons from 2--6 MeV originating from an Am/Be neutron source. The neutron energies were determined using the time-of-flight technique. Pulse-shape discrimination was employed to discern between gamma-rays and neutrons. The behavior of both the fast (35 ns) and the combined fast and slow (475 ns) components of the neutron scintillation-light pulses were studied. Three different prescriptions were used to relate the neutron maximum energy-transfer edges to the corresponding recoil-proton scintillation-light y…
We have examined long term changes in signal amplitude gain, energy resolution and detection efficiency for the active components of the PIBETA detector system. Beam defining plastic scintillation counters were operated in a ~1 MHz stopped $π^+$ beam for a period of 297 days, accumulating radiation doses of up to 2 Mrad. Detectors in the charged particle tracking system--a pair of cylindrical multi-wire proportional chambers and a thin plastic scintillation barrel-shaped hodoscope array--were irradiated during the same running period with an average dose of ~40 krad. Individual CsI(undoped cry…
A new air shower experiment of the Alborz Observatory, Alborz-I, located at the Sharif University of Technology, Iran, will be constructed in near future. An area of about 30$\times$40 m$^{2}$ will be covered by 20 plastic scintillation detectors (each with an area of 50$\times$50 cm$^{2}$). A series of experiments have been performed to optimize the height of light enclosures of the detectors for this array and the results have been compared to an extended code simulation of these detectors. Operational parameters of the detector obtained by this code are cross checked by Geant4 simulation. T…
DANSS is a one cubic meter plastic scintillator detector with a primary goal of the sterile neutrino searches at a commercial nuclear reactor. Due to its highly advantageous location, fine segmentation and ability to change the distance to the neutrino production origin DANSS is ahead of many similar experiments around the world in terms of the counting rate, signal to background ratio and sterile neutrino exclusion regions. Yet a moderate energy resolution of the detector prevents the further progress in the physics program. The main challenge of the planned upgrade is to achieve the energy r…
We propose a WAveform Vector Exploitation (WAVE) deep neural network for full-waveform Time-Of-Flight (TOF) physics detectors, and evaluate its performance against traditional reconstruction techniques via Monte Carlo study of a small plastic-scintillator scatter camera. Ultralytics LLC (www.ultralytics.com) provides WAVE freely under the open source GPL-3.0 license at https://github.com/ultralytics/wave.
The Time-Of-Flight system consisting of plastic scintillation counters plays an important role for particle identification in the BESIII experiment at the BEPCII double ring $e^+e^-$ collider. Degradation of the detection efficiency of the barrel TOF system has been observed since the start of physical data taking and this effect has triggered intensive and systematic studies about aging effects of the detector. The aging rates of the attenuation lengths and relative gains are obtained based on the data acquired in past several years. This study is essential for ensuring an extended operation …
This paper describes the use of the time-of-flight (TOF) technique as a particle identification method for the HERMES experiment. The time-of-flight is measured by two 1x4 m^2 scintillation hodoscopes that initially were designed for the first-level trigger only. However, the suitable time structure of the HERA electron beam allows an extension of their functions to also measure the TOF for low momentum hadron identification. Using only these conventional hodoscopes, good particle identification was achieved for protons and pions in the momentum range up to 2.9GeV/c and for kaons up to 1.5GeV/…
The dark matter interpretation of the DAMA modulation signal depends on the NaI(Tl) scintillation efficiency of nuclear recoils. Previous measurements for Na recoils have large discrepancies, especially in the DAMA/LIBRA modulation energy region. We report a quenching effect measurement of Na recoils in NaI(Tl) from 3keV$_{\text{nr}}$ to 52keV$_{\text{nr}}$, covering the whole DAMA/LIBRA energy region for light WIMP interpretations. By using a low-energy, pulsed neutron beam, a double time-of-flight technique, and pulse-shape discrimination methods, we obtained the most accurate measurement of…
Monte Carlo simulation plays an important role in the study of time of flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) prototype. As it can incorporate accurate physical modeling of scintillation detection process, from scintillation light generation, the transport of scintillation photos through the crystal(s), to the conversion of these photons into electronic signals. The Geant4 based simulation software GATE can provide a user-friendly simulation platform containing the properties needed. In this work, we developed a dedicated module in GATE simulation tool. Using this module, we simulated…
We demonstrated the feasibility of measuring the axial coordinate of a gamma quantum interaction point in a plastic scintillator bar via the detection of scintillation photons escaping from the scintillator with an array of wavelength-shifting (WLS) strips. Using a test set-up comprising a BC-420 scintillator bar and an~array of sixteen BC-482A WLS strips we achieved a spatial resolution of~5\,mm~($σ$) for annihilation photons from a $^{22}$Na isotope. The studied method can be used to improve the spatial resolution of a plastic-scintillator-based PET scanner which is being developed by the J-…
Liquid xenon has several attractive features, which make it suitable for applications to nuclear medicine, such as high scintillation yield and fast scintillation decay time, better than currently used crystals. Since the '90s, several attempts has been made to build Positron Emission Tomography scanners based on liquid xenon, which can be divided into two different approaches: on one hand, the detection of the ionization charge in TPCs, and, on the other one, the detection of scintillation light with photomultipliers. PETALO (Positron Emission Tof Apparatus with Liquid xenOn) is a novel conce…
KATANA - the Krakow Array for Triggering with Amplitude discrimiNAtion - has been built and used as a trigger and veto detector for the S$π$RIT TPC at RIKEN. Its construction allows operating in magnetic field and providing fast response for ionizing particles, giving the approximate forward multiplicity and charge information. Depending on this information, trigger and veto signals are generated. The article presents performance of the detector and details of its construction. A simple phenomenological parametrization of the number of emitted scintillation photons in plastic scintillator is p…
