We consider the Fröhlich Hamiltonian with large coupling constant $α$. For initial data of Pekar product form with coherent phonon field and with the electron minimizing the corresponding energy, we provide a norm approximation of the evolution, valid up to times of order $α^2$. The approximation is given in terms of a Pekar product state, evolved through the Landau-Pekar equations, corrected by a Bogoliubov dynamics taking quantum fluctuations into account. This allows us to show that the Landau-Pekar equations approximately describe the evolution of the electron- and one-phonon reduced density matrices under the Fröhlich dynamics up to times of order $α^2$.
We investigate the Fröhlich polaron model on a three-dimensional torus, and give a proof of the second-order quantum corrections to its ground-state energy in the strong-coupling limit. Compared to previous work in the confined case, the translational symmetry (and its breaking in the Pekar approximation) makes the analysis substantially more challenging.
We consider the Fröhlich polaron model in the strong coupling limit. It is well known that to leading order the ground state energy is given by the (classical) Pekar energy. In this work, we establish the subleading correction, describing quantum fluctuation about the classical limit. Our proof applies to a model of a confined polaron, where both the electron and the polarization field are restricted to a set of finite volume, with linear size determined by the natural length scale of the Pekar problem.
We consider a Fröhlich polaron bound in a symmetric Mexican hat-type potential. The ground state is unique and therefore invariant under rotations. However, we show that the minimizers of the corresponding Pekar problem are nonradial. Assuming these nonradial minimizers are unique up to rotation, we prove in the strong-coupling limit that the ground-state electron density converges in a weak sense to a rotational average of the densities of the minimizers.
A polaron is an electron interacting with a polar crystal, which is able to form a bound state by using the distortions of the crystal induced by its own density of charge. In this paper we derive Pekar's famous continuous model for polarons (in which the crystal is replaced by a simple effective Coulomb self-attraction) by studying the macroscopic limit of the reduced Hartree-Fock theory of the crystal. The macroscopic density of the polaron converges to that of Pekar's nonlinear model, with a possibly anisotropic dielectric matrix. The polaron also exhibits fast microscopic oscillations whic…
The Landau-Pekar equations describe the dynamics of a strongly coupled polaron. Here we provide a class of initial data for which the associated effective Hamiltonian has a uniform spectral gap for all times. For such initial data, this allows us to extend the results on the adiabatic theorem for the Landau-Pekar equations and their derivation from the Froehlich model obtained in [8, 7] to larger times.
We provide a definition of the effective mass for the classical polaron described by the Landau-Pekar equations. It is based on a novel variational principle, minimizing the energy functional over states with given (initial) velocity. The resulting formula for the polaron's effective mass agrees with the prediction by Landau and Pekar [10].
We prove an adiabatic theorem for the Landau-Pekar equations. This allows us to derive new results on the accuracy of their use as effective equations for the time evolution generated by the Fröhlich Hamiltonian with large coupling constant $α$. In particular, we show that the time evolution of Pekar product states with coherent phonon field and the electron being trapped by the phonons is well approximated by the Landau-Pekar equations until times short compared to $α^2$.
We consider the Fröhlich Hamiltonian in a mean-field limit where many bosonic particles weakly couple to the quantized phonon field. For large particle number and suitably small coupling, we show that the dynamics of the system is approximately described by the Landau-Pekar equations. These describe a Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with a classical polarization field, whose dynamics is effected by the condensate, i.e., the back-reaction of the phonons that are created by the particles during the time evolution is of leading order.
We discuss a one-dimensional version of the Landau-Pekar equations, which are a system of coupled differential equations with two different time scales. We derive an approximation on the slow time scale in the spirit of a non-linear adiabatic theorem. Dispersive estimates for solutions of the Schrödinger equation with time-dependent potential are a key technical ingredient in our proof.
We review old and new results on the Fröhlich polaron model. The discussion includes the validity of the (classical) Pekar approximation in the strong coupling limit, quantum corrections to this limit, as well as the divergence of the effective polaron mass.
We consider mean-field interactions corresponding to Gibbs measures on interacting Brownian paths in three dimensions. The interaction is self-attractive and is given by a singular Coulomb potential. The logarithmic asymptotics of the partition function for this model were identified in the 1980s by Donsker and Varadhan [6] in terms of the {\it{Pekar variational formula}}, which coincides with the behavior of the partition function of the {\it{polaron problem}} under strong coupling. Based on this, in 1986 Spohn [14] made a heuristic observation that the strong coupling behavior of the polaron…
This paper is concerned with Fröhlich polarons subject to external electromagnetic fields in the limit of large electron-phonon coupling. To leading order in the coupling constant, $\sqrtα$, the ground state energy is shown to be correctly given by the minimum of the Pekar functional including the electromagnetic fields, provided these fields in the Fröhlich model are scaled properly with $α$. As a corollary, the binding of two polarons in strong magnetic fields is obtained.
We study the dynamics of large polarons described by the Froehlich Hamiltonian in the limit of strong coupling. The initial conditions are (perturbations of) product states of an electron wave function and a phonon coherent state, as suggested by Pekar. We show that, to leading order on the natural time scale of the problem, the phonon field is stationary and the electron moves according to an effective linear Schroedinger equation.
In this paper estimates on the ground state energy of Fröhlich $N$-polarons in electromagnetic fields in the strong coupling limit, $α\to\infty$, are derived. It is shown that the ground state energy is given by $α^2$ multiplied by the minimal energy of the corresponding Pekar-Tomasevich functional for $N$ particles, up to an error term of order $α^{42/23}N^3$. The potentials $A,V$ are suitably rescaled in $α$. As a corollary, binding of $N$-polarons for strong magnetic fields for large coupling constants is established.
We consider the Fröhlich $N$-polaron Hamiltonian in the strong coupling limit and bound the ground state energy from below. In particular, our lower bound confirms that the ground state energy of the Fröhlich polaron and the ground state energy of the associated Pekar-Tomasevich variational problem are asymptotically equal in the strong coupling limit. We generalize the operator approach that was used to prove a similar result in the N=1 case in Lieb and Thomas (1997) and apply a Feynman-Kac formula to obtain the same result for an arbitrary particle number $N \geq 1$.
Fröhlich's polaron Hamiltonian describes an electron coupled to the quantized phonon field of an ionic crystal. We show that in the strong coupling limit the dynamics of the polaron is approximated by an effective non-linear partial differential equation due to Landau and Pekar, in which the phonon field is treated as a classical field.
The last unsolved problem about the many-polaron system, in the Pekar-Tomasevich approximation, is the case of bosons with the electron-electron Coulomb repulsion of strength exactly 1 (the 'neutral case'). We prove that the ground state energy, for large $N$, goes exactly as $-N^{7/5}$, and we give upper and lower bounds on the asymptotic coefficient that agree to within a factor of $2^{2/5}$.
The binding of a system of $N$ polarons subject to a constant magnetic field of strength $B$ is investigated within the Pekar-Tomasevich approximation. In this approximation the energy of $N$ polarons is described in terms of a non-quadratic functional with a quartic term that accounts for the electron-electron self-interaction mediated by phonons. The size of a coupling constant, denoted by $α$, in front of the quartic is determined by the electronic properties of the crystal under consideration, but in any case it is constrained by $0<α<1$. For all values of $N$ and $B$ we find an interval $…
If the polaron coupling constant $α$ is large enough, bipolarons or multi-polarons will form. When passing through the critical $α_c$ from above, does the radius of the system simply get arbitrarily large or does it reach a maximum and then explodes? We prove that it is always the latter. We also prove the analogous statement for the Pekar-Tomasevich (PT) approximation to the energy, in which case there is a solution to the PT equation at $α_c$. Similarly, we show that the same phenomenon occurs for atoms, e.g., helium, at the critical value of the nuclear charge. Our proofs rely only on energ…
We consider the Fröhlich model of the Polaron whose path integral formulation leads to the transformed path measure $$ \widehat{\mathbb P}_{α,T}(\mathrm dω)= Z_{α,T}^{-1}\,\, \exp\bigg\{\fracα{2}\int_{-T}^T\int_{-T}^T\frac{e^{-|t-s|}}{|ω(t)-ω(s)|} \, d s \, d t\bigg\}\,\mathbb P(\mathrm dω) $$ with respect to $\mathbb P$ which governs the law of the increments of the three dimensional Brownian motion on a finite interval $[-T,T]$, and $ Z_{α,T}$ is the partition function or the normalizing constant and $α>0$ is a constant. The Polaron measure reflects a self attractive interaction. According t…
We study the time evolution of the Fröhlich Hamiltonian in a mean-field limit in which many particles weakly couple to the quantized phonon field. Assuming that the particles are initially in a Bose-Einstein condensate and that the excitations of the phonon field are initially in a coherent state we provide an effective dynamics which approximates the time evolved many-body state in norm, provided that the number of particles is large. The approximation is given by a product state which evolves according to the Landau-Pekar equations and which is corrected by a Bogoliubov dynamics. In addition…
