We consider the Fröhlich polaron model in the strong coupling limit. It is well known that to leading order the ground state energy is given by the (classical) Pekar energy. In this work, we establish the subleading correction, describing quantum fluctuation about the classical limit. Our proof applies to a model of a confined polaron, where both the electron and the polarization field are restricted to a set of finite volume, with linear size determined by the natural length scale of the Pekar problem.
We investigate the Fröhlich polaron model on a three-dimensional torus, and give a proof of the second-order quantum corrections to its ground-state energy in the strong-coupling limit. Compared to previous work in the confined case, the translational symmetry (and its breaking in the Pekar approximation) makes the analysis substantially more challenging.
We consider a Fröhlich polaron bound in a symmetric Mexican hat-type potential. The ground state is unique and therefore invariant under rotations. However, we show that the minimizers of the corresponding Pekar problem are nonradial. Assuming these nonradial minimizers are unique up to rotation, we prove in the strong-coupling limit that the ground-state electron density converges in a weak sense to a rotational average of the densities of the minimizers.
We consider the Fröhlich Hamiltonian with large coupling constant $α$. For initial data of Pekar product form with coherent phonon field and with the electron minimizing the corresponding energy, we provide a norm approximation of the evolution, valid up to times of order $α^2$. The approximation is given in terms of a Pekar product state, evolved through the Landau-Pekar equations, corrected by a Bogoliubov dynamics taking quantum fluctuations into account. This allows us to show that the Landau-Pekar equations approximately describe the evolution of the electron- and one-phonon reduced densi…
A polaron is an electron interacting with a polar crystal, which is able to form a bound state by using the distortions of the crystal induced by its own density of charge. In this paper we derive Pekar's famous continuous model for polarons (in which the crystal is replaced by a simple effective Coulomb self-attraction) by studying the macroscopic limit of the reduced Hartree-Fock theory of the crystal. The macroscopic density of the polaron converges to that of Pekar's nonlinear model, with a possibly anisotropic dielectric matrix. The polaron also exhibits fast microscopic oscillations whic…
We provide a definition of the effective mass for the classical polaron described by the Landau-Pekar equations. It is based on a novel variational principle, minimizing the energy functional over states with given (initial) velocity. The resulting formula for the polaron's effective mass agrees with the prediction by Landau and Pekar [10].
We review old and new results on the Fröhlich polaron model. The discussion includes the validity of the (classical) Pekar approximation in the strong coupling limit, quantum corrections to this limit, as well as the divergence of the effective polaron mass.
We consider mean-field interactions corresponding to Gibbs measures on interacting Brownian paths in three dimensions. The interaction is self-attractive and is given by a singular Coulomb potential. The logarithmic asymptotics of the partition function for this model were identified in the 1980s by Donsker and Varadhan [6] in terms of the {\it{Pekar variational formula}}, which coincides with the behavior of the partition function of the {\it{polaron problem}} under strong coupling. Based on this, in 1986 Spohn [14] made a heuristic observation that the strong coupling behavior of the polaron…
This paper is concerned with Fröhlich polarons subject to external electromagnetic fields in the limit of large electron-phonon coupling. To leading order in the coupling constant, $\sqrtα$, the ground state energy is shown to be correctly given by the minimum of the Pekar functional including the electromagnetic fields, provided these fields in the Fröhlich model are scaled properly with $α$. As a corollary, the binding of two polarons in strong magnetic fields is obtained.
We consider the one-dimensional Froehlich polaron localized in a symmetric decreasing electric potential. It is known that the non-linear Pekar functional corresponding to our model admits a unique minimizer. In the strong-coupling limit, we show that any approximate ground-state wave function of our model- after integrating out its phonon modes- converges in the weak sense to this unique minimizer.
We study the dynamics of large polarons described by the Froehlich Hamiltonian in the limit of strong coupling. The initial conditions are (perturbations of) product states of an electron wave function and a phonon coherent state, as suggested by Pekar. We show that, to leading order on the natural time scale of the problem, the phonon field is stationary and the electron moves according to an effective linear Schroedinger equation.
In this paper estimates on the ground state energy of Fröhlich $N$-polarons in electromagnetic fields in the strong coupling limit, $α\to\infty$, are derived. It is shown that the ground state energy is given by $α^2$ multiplied by the minimal energy of the corresponding Pekar-Tomasevich functional for $N$ particles, up to an error term of order $α^{42/23}N^3$. The potentials $A,V$ are suitably rescaled in $α$. As a corollary, binding of $N$-polarons for strong magnetic fields for large coupling constants is established.
We consider the Fröhlich $N$-polaron Hamiltonian in the strong coupling limit and bound the ground state energy from below. In particular, our lower bound confirms that the ground state energy of the Fröhlich polaron and the ground state energy of the associated Pekar-Tomasevich variational problem are asymptotically equal in the strong coupling limit. We generalize the operator approach that was used to prove a similar result in the N=1 case in Lieb and Thomas (1997) and apply a Feynman-Kac formula to obtain the same result for an arbitrary particle number $N \geq 1$.
Fröhlich's polaron Hamiltonian describes an electron coupled to the quantized phonon field of an ionic crystal. We show that in the strong coupling limit the dynamics of the polaron is approximated by an effective non-linear partial differential equation due to Landau and Pekar, in which the phonon field is treated as a classical field.
The last unsolved problem about the many-polaron system, in the Pekar-Tomasevich approximation, is the case of bosons with the electron-electron Coulomb repulsion of strength exactly 1 (the 'neutral case'). We prove that the ground state energy, for large $N$, goes exactly as $-N^{7/5}$, and we give upper and lower bounds on the asymptotic coefficient that agree to within a factor of $2^{2/5}$.
We show that the ground state of a polaron in a homogeneous magnetic field $B$ and its energy are described by an effective one-dimensional minimization problem in the limit $B\to\infty$. This holds both in the linear Fröhlich and in the non-linear Pekar model and makes rigorous an argument of Kochetov, Leschke and Smondyrev.
The binding of a system of $N$ polarons subject to a constant magnetic field of strength $B$ is investigated within the Pekar-Tomasevich approximation. In this approximation the energy of $N$ polarons is described in terms of a non-quadratic functional with a quartic term that accounts for the electron-electron self-interaction mediated by phonons. The size of a coupling constant, denoted by $α$, in front of the quartic is determined by the electronic properties of the crystal under consideration, but in any case it is constrained by $0<α<1$. For all values of $N$ and $B$ we find an interval $…
We study a class of polaron-type Hamiltonians with sufficiently regular form factor in the interaction term. We investigate the strong-coupling limit of the model, and prove suitable bounds on the ground state energy as a function of the total momentum of the system. These bounds agree with the semiclassical approximation to leading order. The latter corresponds here to the situation when the particle undergoes harmonic motion in a potential well whose frequency is determined by the corresponding Pekar functional. We show that for all such models the effective mass diverges in the strong coupl…
We summarize our recent results on the ground state energy of multi-polaron systems. In particular, we discuss stability and existence of the thermodynamic limit, and we discuss the absence of binding in the case of large Coulomb repulsion and the corresponding binding-unbinding transition. We also consider the Pekar-Tomasevich approximation to the ground state energy and we study radial symmetry of the ground state density.
If the polaron coupling constant $α$ is large enough, bipolarons or multi-polarons will form. When passing through the critical $α_c$ from above, does the radius of the system simply get arbitrarily large or does it reach a maximum and then explodes? We prove that it is always the latter. We also prove the analogous statement for the Pekar-Tomasevich (PT) approximation to the energy, in which case there is a solution to the PT equation at $α_c$. Similarly, we show that the same phenomenon occurs for atoms, e.g., helium, at the critical value of the nuclear charge. Our proofs rely only on energ…
The bipolaron are two electrons coupled to the elastic deformations of an ionic crystal. We study this system in the Fröhlich approximation. If the Coulomb repulsion dominates, the lowest energy states are two well separated polarons. Otherwise the electrons form a bound pair. We prove the validity of the Pekar-Tomasevich energy functional in the strong coupling limit, yielding estimates on the coupling parameters for which the binding energy is strictly positive. Under the condition of a strictly positive binding energy we prove the existence of a ground state at fixed total momentum $P$, pro…
We consider the Fröhlich model of the Polaron whose path integral formulation leads to the transformed path measure $$ \widehat{\mathbb P}_{α,T}(\mathrm dω)= Z_{α,T}^{-1}\,\, \exp\bigg\{\fracα{2}\int_{-T}^T\int_{-T}^T\frac{e^{-|t-s|}}{|ω(t)-ω(s)|} \, d s \, d t\bigg\}\,\mathbb P(\mathrm dω) $$ with respect to $\mathbb P$ which governs the law of the increments of the three dimensional Brownian motion on a finite interval $[-T,T]$, and $ Z_{α,T}$ is the partition function or the normalizing constant and $α>0$ is a constant. The Polaron measure reflects a self attractive interaction. According t…
We study the qualitative behaviour of the energy-momentum relation of the Fröhlich polaron at fixed coupling strength. Among other properties, we show that it is non-decreasing and that the correction to the quasi-particle energy is negative. We give a proof that the effective mass lies in $(1, \infty)$ that does not need the validity of a central limit theorem for the path measure.
