A popular account of the mixing patterns for the three generations of quarks and leptons is through the characters $κ$ of a finite group $G$. Here we introduce a $d$-dimensional Hilbert space with $d=cc(G)$, the number of conjugacy classes of $G$. Groups under consideration should follow two rules, (a) the character table contains both two- and three-dimensional representations with at least one of them faithful and (b) there are minimal informationally complete measurements under the action of a $d$-dimensional Pauli group over the characters of these representations. Groups with small $d$ that satisfy these rules coincide in a large part with viable ones derived so far for reproducing simultaneously the CKM (quark) and PNMS (lepton) mixing matrices. Groups leading to physical $CP$ violation are singled out.
In this paper we study the noncommutative effects to the lepton spectrum from the decay of a polarized top quark. It is shown that the lowest contribution comes from the quadratic terms of the noncommutative parameter. The deviations from the standard model are significant for small values of the noncommutative characteristic scale. However, the charged lepton spin correlation coefficient has a remarkable deviation from the standard model from very low values of the noncommutative characteristic scale to 1 TeV.
We investigate the production of fourth family up-type quarks using effective lagrangian approach at future lepton-hadron colliders and study the kinematical characteristics of the signal with an optimal set of cuts. We obtain the upper mass limits 500 GeV at THERA and one TeV at Linac $\otimes$ LHC.
The photon spectra measured by the ALICE collaboration in Pb+Pb collisions at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies has been analyzed with a view of extracting the properties of thermal system formed in these collisions. The results of the analysis are compared with the previously studied spectra measured at Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energies. The thermal dilepton spectra from the Pb+Pb collision at LHC energy has been predicted for the initial conditions constrained by the thermal photon spectra at the same collision conditions. The slope of the …
We investigate a seesaw type mass matrix $M_f\simeq m_L M_F^{-1} m_R$ for quarks and leptons, $f$, under the assumptions that the matrices $m_L$ and $m_R$ have common structures for the quarks and leptons, and that the matrix $M_F$ characterizing the heavy fermion sector has the form [(unit matrix)+ (democratic-type matrix)]. We obtain well-satisfied relations for quark masses and mixings related to the charged lepton masses.
Comparison of properties of quark and leptons as well as understanding their similarities and differences is one of the milestones on the way to underlying physics. Several observations, if not accidental, can strongly affect the implications: (i) nearly tri-bimaximal character of lepton mixing, (ii) special neutrino symmetries, (iii) the QLC-relations. We consider possible connections between quarks and leptons which include the quark-lepton symmetry and unification, approximate universality, and quark-lepton complementarity. Presence of new neutrino states and their mixing with the left or/a…
We study a flavor model that the quark sector has the $S_3$ modular symmetry, while the lepton sector has the $A_4$ modular symmetry. Our model leads to characteristic quark mass matrices which are consistent with experimental data of quark masses, mixing angles and the CP violating phase. The lepton sector is also consistent with the experimental data of neutrino oscillations. We also study baryon and lepton number violations in our flavor model.
Combining Pati-Salam (PS) and flavour symmetries in a renormalisable setup, we devise a scenario which produces realistic masses for the charged leptons. Flavour-symmetry breaking scalar fields in the adjoint representations of the PS gauge group are responsible for generating different flavour structures for up- and down-type quarks as well as for leptons. The model is characterised by new heavy fermions which mix with the Standard Model quarks and leptons. In particular, the partners for the third fermion generation induce sizeable sources of flavour violation. Focusing on the charged-lepton…
Many Standard Model extensions predict doubly-charged scalars; in particular, all models with resonances in charged lepton-pair channels with non-vanishing lepton number; if these are pair produced at the LHC, the observation of their decay into $l^\pm l^\pm W^\mp W^\mp$ will be necessary in order to establish their lepton-number violating character, which is generally not straightforward. Nonetheless, the analysis of events containing four charged leptons (including scalar decays into one or two taus as well as into W bosons) makes it possible to determine whether the doubly-charged excitatio…
We consider charged Lepton Flavour Violation (LFV) in the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended to include the see-saw mechanism with Constrained Sequential Dominance (CSD), where CSD provides a natural see-saw explanation of tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing. When charged lepton corrections to tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing are included, we discover characteristic correlations among the LFV branching ratios, depending on the mass ordering of the right-handed neutrinos, with a pronounced dependence on the leptonic mixing angle $θ_{13}$ (and in some cases also on the Dirac CP p…
In combination with supersymmetry, flavor symmetry may relate quarks with leptons, even in the absence of a grand-unification group. We propose an SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) model where both supersymmetry and the assumed A4 flavor symmetries are softly broken, reproducing well the observed fermion mass hierarchies and predicting: (i) a relation between down-type quarks and charged lepton masses, and (ii) a correlation between the Cabibbo angle in the quark sector, and the reactor angle characterizing CP violation in neutrino oscillations.
We suggest a simple highly predictive ansatz for charged lepton and light neutrino mass matrices, based on the assumption of universality of Yukawa couplings. Using as input the charged lepton masses and light neutrino masses, the six parameters characterizing the leptonic mixing matrix $V_{PMNS}$, are predicted in terms of a single phase $ϕ$, which takes a value around $ϕ={\fracπ{2}}$. Correlations among variuos physical quantities are obtained, in particular $V^{PMNS}_{13}$ is predicted as a function of $Δm^2_{21}$, $Δm^2_{31}$ and $\sin^2(θ_{sol})$, and restricted to the range $0.167<|V^{PM…
We investigate a general structure of lepton mixing matrix resulting from the SU$_F$(3) gauge family model with an appropriate vacuum structure of SU$_F$(3) symmetry breaking. It is shown that the lepton mixing matrix can be parametrized by using the Wolfenstein parametrization method to characterize its deviation from the tri-bimaximal mixing. A general analysis for the allowed leptonic CP-violating phase $δ_e$ and the leptonic Wolfenstein parameters $λ_e$, $A_e$, $ρ_e$ is carried out based on the observed lepton mixing angles. We demonstrate how the leptonic CP violation correlates to the le…
We postulate that the neutrino mass matrix in the lepton flavour basis is an S3 group matrix in the natural representation of S3. This immediately requires one neutrino to be trimaximally mixed, as suggested by the solar neutrino data. We go on to postulate that the charged-lepton mass matrix in the neutrino mass-basis is an S3 class matrix in the natural representation of the S3 class-algebra, leading to exact tri-bimaximal mixing, which is compatible with data overall. The tri-bimaximal mixing matrix is seen to be closely related to the S3 character table, and is properly the S2 C S3 table o…
The recently proposed model of neutrino mass with no new physics beyond the TeV energy scale is shown to admit a natural and realistic supersymmetric realization, when combined with another recently proposed model of quark masses in the context of a softly broken U(1) symmetry. Four Higgs doublets are required, but two must have masses at the TeV scale. New characteristic experimental predictions of this synthesis are discussed.
The strategy of constraining the lepton flavor mixing from remnant CP symmetry is investigated in a rather general way. The neutrino mass matrix generally admits four remnant CP transformations which can be derived from the measured lepton mixing matrix in the charged lepton diagonal basis. Conversely, the lepton mixing matrix can be reconstructed from the postulated remnant CP transformations. All mixing angles and CP violating phases can be completely determined by the full set of remnant CP transformations or three of them. When one or two remnant CP transformations are preserved, the resul…
We present the results of a detailed study of the effects of $b$-tagging on the heavy top-quark signal and backgrounds for the modes of the di-lepton plus two high transverse energy jets at the Fermilab Tevatron. The general characteristics of the heavy top-quark signal events are also discussed so that a comparison can be made between $b$-tagging and imposing stringent kinematical cuts to eliminate backgrounds.
Rephasing invariants of quark and lepton mixing matrices are obtained in the standard model extended by the seesaw mechanism, and in its low-energy effective theory with the dimension-five Majorana mass operator. We classify the basic invariants, discuss non-trivial relations between them, and determine the independent invariants which characterize all the information in the mixing matrices in a basis-independent way. We also discuss the restrictions on the allowed ranges for the mixing phases, and on the rephasing invariants, which follow from a discrete invariance of the Majorana mass matrix…
In the context of the Calabi-Yau string model we discuss the origin of characteristic pattern of quark-lepton masses and the CKM matrix. The discrete $R$-symmetry $Z_{2k+1} \times Z_2$ is introduced and the $Z_2$ is assigned to the $R$-parity. The gauge symmetry at the string scale is broken into the standard model gauge group at an intermediate energy scale. At energies below the intermediate scale down-type quarks and also leptons are mixed with unobserved heavy states, respectively. On the other hand, there are no such mixings for up-type quarks. The large mixings between light states and h…
We study the implications of generalized CP transformations acting on the mass matrices of charged leptons in a model-independent way. Generalized $e-μ$, $e-τ$ and $μ-τ$ symmetries are considered in detail. In all cases the physical parameters of the lepton mixing matrix, three mixing angles and three CP phases can be expressed in terms of a restricted set of independent "theory" parameters that characterize a given choice of CP transformation. This leads to implications for neutrino oscillations as well as neutrinoless double beta decay experiments.
We show that holographic composite Higgs Models with a discrete A4 symmetry naturally predict hierarchical charged lepton masses and an approximate tri-bimaximal lepton mixing with the correct scale of neutrino masses. They also satisfy current constraints from electroweak precision tests, lepton flavor violation and lepton mixing in a large region of parameter space. Two phenomenologically relevant features arise in these models. First, an extra suppression on the lepton Yukawa couplings makes the tau lepton more composite than naively expected from its mass. As a consequence new light lepton…
We consider scenarios with a heavy $Z^\prime$ gauge boson with flavour non-universal quark and lepton couplings with the goal to illustrate how the cancellation of gauge anomalies generated by the additional U(1)$^\prime$ gauge symmetry would imply correlations between FCNC processes in the quark sector, in the lepton sector and most interestingly between quark flavour and lepton flavour violating processes. We present scenarios with only left-handed flavour-violating $Z^\prime$ couplings and those with also right-handed flavour-violating couplings. These are characterized by a small number of…
The pure leptonic or semileptonic character of tau decays makes them a good laboratory to test the structure of the weak currents and the universality of their couplings to the gauge bosons. The hadronic tau decay modes constitute an ideal tool for studying low-energy effects of the strong interactions in very clean conditions; a well-known example is the precise determination of the QCD coupling from tau-decay data. New physics phenomena, such as a non-zero tau-neutrino mass or violations of (flavour / CP) conservation laws can also be searched for with tau decays.
Assuming the same form of all mass matrices as motivated by quark-lepton symmetry, we discuss conditions under which bi-large mixing in the lepton sector can be obtained with a minimal amount of fine tuning requirements for possible models. We assume hierarchical mass matrices, dominated by the 3-3 element, with off-diagonal elements much smaller than the larger neighboring diagonal element. Characteristic features of this scenario are strong hierarchy in masses of right-handed neutrinos, and comparable contributions of both lighter right-handed neutrinos to the resulting left-handed neutrino …
Charm-hadrons possess versatile hadro-chemistry as characterized by various transverse-momentum-dependent ratios between their different species. In particular, the charm hadro-chemistry may be modified in relativistic heavy-ion collisions with respect to proton-proton collisions at the same energy, as caused by novel diffusion and hadronization mechanisms of charm quarks in the environment of the created quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in the former. Inspired by recent measurements of leptons from charm-hadron decays (separated from bottom decays) in Pb-Pb and Au-Au collisions, we investigate the ef…
Harrison, Perkins and Scott have proposed simple charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices that lead to the tribimaximal mixing $U_{\rm TBM}$. We consider in this work an extension of the mass matrices so that the leptonic mixing matrix becomes $U_{\rm PMNS}=V_L^{\ell\dagger}U_{\rm TBM}W$, where $V_L^\ell$ is a unitary matrix needed to diagonalize the charged lepton mass matrix and $W$ measures the deviation of the neutrino mixing matrix from the bimaximal form. Hence, corrections to $U_{\rm TBM}$ arise from both charged lepton and neutrino sectors. Following our previous work to assume a Qin-…
In the bound state in continuum (BIC) the mass of a composite particle is greater than the total mass of its constituent particles. The BIC states that are stable due to confinement mechanisms, have been found in various fields but particle physics has evolved without analyzing these states. The work's idea is to apply the BIC phenomenon to some elementary particles. The study focuses on a composite fermion of the three light leptons, $(e^{-}e^{+}e^{\pm})_{BIC}$. In the present theory the free electron and free positron is treated as different particles, each being characterized by the complet…
We study the processes $W_L W_L \to t \bar t$ and $W_L Z_L \to t\bar b (\bar t b)$ at future lepton colliders as probes of the couplings of the top quark to resonances at the TeV scale. We consider the cases in which the dominant low energy feature of a strongly interacting electroweak symmetry breaking sector is either a scalar or a vector resonance with mass near 1 TeV. We find that future lepton colliders with high energy and high luminosity have great potential to sensitively probe these physics scenarios. In particular, at a 1.5 TeV linear collider with an integrated luminosity of 200 fb$…
The quark-lepton complementarity (QLC) relations indicate a deep structure that interrelates quarks and leptons. We propose new scenarios, in a seesaw framework with discrete $A_4$ flavor symmetry, which can accommodate the QLC relations and the nonzero neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ together with all the available neutrino experimental data, in a consistent way to generate the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix for the quark mixing. Certain effective dimension-5 operators are introduced, which induce a deviation of the lepton mixing matrix from the tribimaximal mixing (TBM) pattern and le…
We consider models of supersymmetry which can incorporate sizeable mixing between different generations of sfermions. While the mixing is constrained by the non-observation of various flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) processes, there exist regions of SUSY parameter space where the effects of such mixing can be probed at colliders. In this work, we explore this possibility by focussing on the slepton sector. The sleptons are produced through cascade decays in direct neutralino-chargino ($χ_2^0χ_1^\pm$) pair production at the LHC. The final state is characterized by 3 leptons and missing …
Existence of heavy mirror analogs of ordinary fermions could explain a thinkable paradox within the Standard Model direct parity violation. This paradox is an objectionable possibility to distinguish physically the left-handed and right-handed coordinate systems. Arguments are presented here that mirror states can also participate in the formation of the observed SM quark and lepton mass spectra and their weak mixing properties. 1. With participation of mirror generations, the quark mixing matrix is similar to the experimentally observed form. The latter is determined by the restrictions impos…
In the present work, the inverted hierarchical neutrino mass model which is characterised by opposite CP parity in the first two mass eigenvalues $(m_1,-m_2,m_3)$, is studied in order to lower the predicted value of solar mixing angle $\tan^2θ_{12}$, from the tri-bimaximal mixing (TBM), without sacrificing the conditions of maximal atmospheric mixing angle and zero reactor angle. The present attempt is different from the earlier approach where the correction from the charged lepton mass matrix is included in the leptonic mixing matrix to lower the prediction on solar mixing angle. The lowering…
We discuss the possibility of enforcing a massless Majorana neutrino in the direct and semi-direct approaches to lepton mixing, in which the PMNS matrix is partly predicted by subgroups of a discrete family symmetry, extending previous group searches up to order 1535. We find a phenomenologically viable scheme for the semi-direct approach based on $Q(648)$ which contains $Δ(27)$ and the quaternion group as subgroups. This leads to novel predictions for the first column of the PMNS matrix corresponding to a normal neutrino mass hierarchy with $m_1=0$, and sum rules for the mixing angles and pha…
Dirac neutrino masses require two distinct neutral Weyl spinors per generation, with a special arrangement of masses and interactions with charged leptons. Once this arrangement is perturbed, lepton number is no longer conserved and neutrinos become Majorana particles. If these lepton number violating perturbations are small compared to the Dirac mass terms, neutrinos are quasi-Dirac particles. Alternatively, this scenario can be characterized by the existence of pairs of neutrinos with almost degenerate masses, and a lepton mixing matrix which has 12 angles and 12 phases. In this work we disc…
