This work is devoted to the analysis of the Yamabe problem on Spin manifolds and some applications to CMC immersions. Despite the efforts of many authors, very little is known on the existence of Yamabe metrics on general Spin manifolds. Motivated to bubbling phenomena for the Riemannian problem and recent multiplicity results in this setting, we investigate special spinorial Yamabe metrics on product manifolds developing a bubbling analysis which has independent interest in the present setting.
Motivated by recent progress on a spinorial analogue of the Yamabe problem in the geometric literature, we study a conformally invariant spinor field equation on the $m$-sphere, $m\geq2$. Via variational methods, we study analytic aspects of the associated energy functional, culminating in a blow-up analysis.
In this paper we construct singular solutions to the critical Dirac equation on spheres. More precisely, first we construct solutions admitting two points singularities that we call Delaunay-type solutions because of their similarities with the Delaunay solutions constructed for the singular Yamabe problem in \cite{MP1 , Schoen1989}. Then we construct another kind of singular solutions admitting a great circle as a singular set. These solutions are the building blocks for singular solutions on a general Spin manifold.
We study the Yamabe equation in the Euclidean half-space. We prove that any sign-changing solution has at least twice the energy of a standard bubble. Moreover, a sharper energy lower bound of the sign-changing solution set is also established via the method of moving planes. This bound increases the energy range for which Palais-Smale sequences of related variational problem has a non-trivial weak limit.
Let $(M,g,\si)$ be a compact Riemannian spin manifold of dimension $\geq 2$. For any metric $\tilde g$ conformal to $g$, we denote by $\tildeλ$ the first positive eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on $(M,\tilde g,\si)$. We show that $$\inf_{\tilde{g} \in [g]} \tildeλ\Vol(M,\tilde g)^{1/n} \leq (n/2) \Vol(S^n)^{1/n}.$$ This inequality is a spinorial analogue of Aubin's inequality, an important inequality in the solution of the Yamabe problem. The inequality is already known in the case $n \geq 3$ and in the case $n = 2$, $\ker D=\{0\}$. Our proof also works in the remaining case $n=2$, $\ker D\n…
This article is concerned with a class of elliptic equations on Carnot groups depending of one real positive parameter and involving a critical nonlinearity. As a special case of our results we prove the existence of at least one nontrivial solution for a subelliptic critical equation defined on a smooth and bounded domain $D$ of the {Heisenberg group} $\mathbb{H}^n=\mathbb{C}^n\times \mathbb{R}$. Our approach is based on pure variational methods and locally sequentially weakly lower semicontinuous arguments.

We define a new formal Riemannian metric on a conformal classes of four-manifolds in the context of the $σ_2$-Yamabe problem. Exploiting this new variational structure we show that solutions are unique unless the manifold is conformally equivalent to the round sphere.
We construct Delaunay-type solutions for the fractional Yamabe problem with an isolated singularity $(-Δ)^γw = c_{n, γ} w^{\frac{n+2γ}{n-2γ}}, w>0 \ \mbox{in} \ \mathbb{R}^n \backslash \{0\}$ We follow a variational approach, in which the key is the computation of the fractional Laplacian in polar coordinates.
We prove that the fractional Yamabe equation $\mathcal L_γu=|u|^\frac{4γ}{Q-2γ}u$ on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H^n$ has $[\frac{n+1}{2}]$ sequences of nodal (sign-changing) weak solutions whose elements have mutually different nodal properties, where $\mathcal L_γ$ denotes the CR fractional sub-Laplacian operator on $\mathbb H^n$, $Q=2n+2$ is the homogeneous dimension of $\mathbb H^n$, and $γ\in \bigcup_{k=1}^n[k,\frac{kQ}{Q-1})$. Our argument is variational, based on a Ding-type conformal pulling-back transformation of the original problem into a problem on the CR sphere $S^{2n+1}$ combin…
In this paper we extend Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequalities on compact Riemannian manifolds for dimension $n\ne 2$. As one application, we solve a generalized Yamabe problem on locally conforamlly flat manifolds via a new designed energy functional and a new variational approach. Even for the classic Yamabe problem on locally conformally flat manifolds, our approach provides a new and relatively simpler solution.
Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n. The k-curvature, for k=1,2,..n, is defined as the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tenser. The k-Yamabe problem is to prove the existence of a conformal metric whose k-curvature is a constant. When k=1, it reduces to the well-known Yamabe problem. Under the assumption that the metric is admissible, the existence of solutions to the k-Yamabe problem was recently proved by Gursky and Viaclovsky for k>n/2. In this paper we prove the existence of solutions for the remaining cases k <n/2, k=n/2, assuming t…
This paper introduces a functional generalizing Perelman's weighted Hilbert-Einstein action and the Dirichlet energy for spinors. It is well-defined on a wide class of non-compact manifolds; on asymptotically Euclidean manifolds, the functional is shown to admit a unique critical point, which is necessarily of min-max type, and Ricci flow is its gradient flow. The proof is based on variational formulas for weighted spinorial functionals, valid on all spin manifolds with boundary.
We introduce a double iterative scheme and local variational method to solve the Yamabe-type equation $ - \frac{4(n - 1)}{n - 2}Δ_{g} u + (S_{g} + β) u = λu^{\frac{n + 2}{n - 2}} $ for some constant $ β\leqslant 0 $, locally on Riemannian domain $ (Ω, g) $ with trivial Dirichlet condition and globally on closed manifolds $ (M, g) $; the dimensions of $ Ω$ and $ M $ are at least 3. In contrast to the traditional global variational method, these Yamabe-type equations on closed manifolds are analyzed by local analysis and monotone iteration scheme. In particular, we do not need to use the Weyl te…
Let $(M^n,g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\ge 3$. Assume $[g]$ is a conformal class for which the Conformal Laplacian $L_g$ has at least two negative eigenvalues. We show the existence of a (generalized) metric that maximizes the second eigenvalue of $L_g$ over all conformal metrics (the first eigenvalue is maximized by the Yamabe metric). We also show that a maximal metric defines either a nodal solution of the Yamabe equation, or a harmonic map to a sphere. Moreover, we construct examples of each possibility.
In this paper we demonstrate that under general conditions there exists a metric in the conformal class of an arbitrary metric on a smooth, closed Riemannian manifold of dimension greater than four such that the $Q$-curvature of the metric is a constant. Existence of solutions is obtained through the combination of variational methods, second order Sobolev inequalities, and the $W^{2,2}$ blow-up theory developed by Hebey and Robert. Positivity of the solutions is obtained from a novel argument proven here for the first time that is rooted in the conformal covariance property of the Paneitz-Bra…
We introduce the notion of pseudohermitian k-curvature, which is a natural extension of the Webster scalar curvature, on an orientable manifold endowed with a strictly pseudoconvex pseudohermitian structure (referred here as a CR manifold) and raise the k-Yamabe problem on a compact CR manifold. When k=1, the problem was proposed and partially solved by Jerison and Lee for CR manifolds non-locally CR-equivalent to the CR sphere. For k > 1, the problem can be translated in terms of the study of a fully nonlinear equation of type complex k-Hessian. We provide some partial answers related to the …
Prescribing, by conformal transformation, the kth-elementary symmetric polynomial of the Schouten tensor $P$ to be constant is a generalisation of the Yamabe problem. On compact Riemannian n-manifolds we show that, for k between and including 3 and n, this prescription equation is an Euler-Lagrange equation of some action if and only if the structure is locally conformally flat.

By using variational techniques we provide new existence results for Yamabe-type equations with subcritical perturbations set on a compact $d$-dimensional ($d\geq 3$) Riemannian manifold without boundary. As a direct consequence of our main theorems, we prove the existence of at least one solution to the following singular Yamabe-type problem $$ \left\lbrace \begin{array}{ll} -Δ_g w + α(σ)w = μK(σ) w^\frac{d+2}{d-2} +λ\left( w^{r-1} + f(w)\right), \quad σ\in\mathcal{M} &\\ &\\ w\in H^2_α(\mathcal{M}), \quad w>0 \ \ \mbox{in} \ \ \mathcal{M} & \end{array} \right.$$ where, as usual, $Δ_g$ denote…
Numerous elliptic and parabolic variational problems arising in physics and geometry (Ginzburg-Landau equations, harmonic maps, Yang-Mills fields, Omega-instantons, Yamabe equations, geometric flows in general...) possess a critical dimension in which an invariance group (similitudes, conformal groups) acts. This common feature generates, in all these different situations, the same non-linear effect. One observes a strict splitting in space between an almost linear regime and a dominantly non-linear regime which has two major characteristics : it requires a quantized amount of energy and arise…
