We prove that the fractional Yamabe equation $\mathcal L_γu=|u|^\frac{4γ}{Q-2γ}u$ on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H^n$ has $[\frac{n+1}{2}]$ sequences of nodal (sign-changing) weak solutions whose elements have mutually different nodal properties, where $\mathcal L_γ$ denotes the CR fractional sub-Laplacian operator on $\mathbb H^n$, $Q=2n+2$ is the homogeneous dimension of $\mathbb H^n$, and $γ\in \bigcup_{k=1}^n[k,\frac{kQ}{Q-1})$. Our argument is variational, based on a Ding-type conformal pulling-back transformation of the original problem into a problem on the CR sphere $S^{2n+1}$ combined with a suitable Hebey-Vaugon-type compactness result and group-theoretical constructions for special subgroups of the unitary group ${\bf U}(n+1).$
We provide the first example of a sequence of {\em nondegenerate}, in the sense of Duyckaerts-Kenig-Merle \cite{DKM}, nodal nonradial solutions to the critical Yamabe problem $$ -ΔQ= |Q|^{\frac{2}{n-2}} Q, \ \ Q \in {\mathcal D}^{1,2} (\R^n). $$
For each $n\geq 3$ we establish the existence of a nodal solution $u$ to the Yamabe problem on the round sphere $(\mathbb{S}^n,g)$ which satisfies $$\int_{\mathbb{S}^n}|u|^{2^*}dV_g < 2m_n\mathrm{vol}(\mathbb{S}^n),$$ where $m_3=9,$ $m_4= 7,$ $m_5=m_6=6$, and $m_n= 5\ \text{if }n\geq 7.$
We study an optimal M-partition problem for the Yamabe equation on the round sphere, in the presence of some particular symmetries. We show that there is a correspondence between solutions to this problem and least-energy sign-changing symmetric solutions to the Yamabe equation on the sphere with precisely M nodal domains. The existence of an optimal partition is established through the study of the limit profiles of least-energy solutions to a weakly coupled competitive elliptic system on the sphere.
We construct a new family of entire solutions to the Yamabe equation $$-Δu=\frac{n(n-2)}{4}|u|^{\frac{4}{n-2}}u \mbox{ in }\mathcal{D}^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^n).$$ If $n=3$, our solutions have maximal rank, being the first example in odd dimension. Our construction has analogies with the doubling of the equatorial spheres in the construction of minimal surfaces in $S^3(1)$.
Given a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ without boundary of dimension $m\geq 3$ and under some symmetry assumptions, we establish existence of one positive and multiple nodal solutions to the Yamabe-type equation $$-div_{g}(a\nabla u)+bu=c|u|^{2^{\ast}-2}u\quad on\ M$$ where $a,b,c\in C^{\infty}(M)$, $a$ and $c$ are positive, $-div_{g}(a\nabla)+b$ is coercive, and $2^{\ast}=\frac{2m}{m-2}$ is the critical Sobolev exponent. In particular, if $R_{g}$ denotes the scalar curvature of $(M,g)$, we give conditions which guarantee that the Yamabe problem $$Δ_{g}u+\frac{m-2}{4(m-1} R_{g}u=κu^{2^{\a…
We consider a closed cohomogeneity one Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g) $ of dimension $n\geq 3$. If the Ricci curvature of $M$ is positive, we prove the existence of infinite nodal solutions for equations of the form $-Δ_g u + λu = λu^q$ with $λ>0$, $q>1$. In particular for a positive Einstein manifold which is of cohomogeneity one or fibers over a cohomogeniety one Einstein manifold we prove the existence of infinite nodal solutions for the Yamabe equation, with a prescribed number of connected components of its nodal domain.
We prove the existence of a homogeneous singular solution of the critical equation $$-Δu = u^{\frac{Q+2}{Q-2}}$$ on the Heisenberg group $H^n$, where $Q$ is the \textit{homogeneous dimension}. In order to do this, we introduce a suitable concept of normal curvature for hypersurfaces. Furthermore we study the bifurcation of non-homogeneous solutions from the homogeneous one.
We give conditions for the existence of regular optimal partitions, with an arbitrary number $\ell\geq 2$ of components, for the Yamabe equation on a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. To this aim, we study a weakly coupled competitive elliptic system of $\ell$ equations, related to the Yamabe equation. We show that this system has a least energy solution with nontrivial components if $\dim M\geq 10$, $(M,g)$ is not locally conformally flat and satisfies an additional geometric assumption whenever $\dim M=10$. Moreover, we show that the limit profiles of the components of the solution separat…
Given an isoparametric function $f$ on the $n$-dimensional round sphere, we consider functions of the form $u=w\circ f$ to reduce the semilinear elliptic problem \[ -Δ_{g_0}u+λu=λ | u\ | ^{p-1}u\qquad\text{ on }\mathbb{S}^n \] with $λ>0$ and $1<p$, into a singular ODE in $[0,π]$ of the form $w'' + \frac{h(r)}{\sin r} w' + \fracλ{\ell^2}\ (| w|^{p-1}w - w\ )=0$, where $h$ is an strictly decreasing function having exactly one zero in this interval and $\ell$ is a geometric constant. Using a double shooting method, together with a result for oscillating solutions to this kind of ODE, we obtain a …
A complete solution to the quaternionic contact Yamabe equation on the qc sphere of dimension $4n+3$ as well as on the quaternionic Heisenberg group is given. A uniqueness theorem for the qc Yamabe problem in a compact locally 3-Sasakian manifold is shown.
Given an isoparametric function $f$ on the $n$-dimensional sphere, we consider the space of functions $w\circ f$ to reduce the Yamabe equation on the round sphere into a singular ODE on $w$ in the interval $[0,π]$, of the form $w" + (h(r)/\sin r)w'+λ(\vert w\vert^{4/n-2}w - w)=0$, where $h$ is a monotone function with exactly one zero on $[0,π]$ and $λ>0$ is a constant. The natural boundary conditions in order to obtain smooth solutions are $w'(0)=0$ and $w'(π)=0$. We show that for any positive integer $k$ there exists a solution with exactly $k$-zeroes yielding solutions to the Yamabe equatio…
Through desingularization of Clifford torus, we prove the existence of a sequence of nondegenerate (in the sense of Duyckaerts-Kenig-Merle nodal nonradial solutions to the critical Yamabe problem $$-Δu=\frac{n(n-2)}{4}|u|^{\frac{4}{n-2}}u,\qquad u\in {\mathcal{D}}^{1,2}(\mathcal{R}^n). $$ The case $n=4$ is the first example in the literature of a solution with {\em maximal rank} ${\mathcal N}=2n+1+\frac{n(n-1)}{2}$.
A complete solution to the quaternionic contact Yamabe problem on the seven dimensional sphere is given. Extremals for the Sobolev inequality on the seven dimensional Hesenberg group are explicitly described and the best constant in the $L^2$ Folland-Stein embedding theorem is determined.
This article is concerned with a class of elliptic equations on Carnot groups depending of one real positive parameter and involving a critical nonlinearity. As a special case of our results we prove the existence of at least one nontrivial solution for a subelliptic critical equation defined on a smooth and bounded domain $D$ of the {Heisenberg group} $\mathbb{H}^n=\mathbb{C}^n\times \mathbb{R}$. Our approach is based on pure variational methods and locally sequentially weakly lower semicontinuous arguments.

We consider the semi-Riemannian Yamabe type equations of the form \[ -\square u + λu = μ\vert u\vert^{p-1}u\quad\text{ on }M \] where $M$ is either the semi-Euclidean space or the pseudosphere of dimension $m\geq 3$, $\square$ is the semi-Riemannian Laplacian in $M$, $λ\geq0$, $μ\in\mathbb{R}\smallsetminus\{0\}$ and $p>1$. Using semi-Riemannian isoparametric functions on $M$, we reduce the PDE into a generalized Emden-Fowler ODE of the form \[ w''+q(r)w'+λw = μ\vert w\vert^{p-1}w\quad\text{ on } I, \] where $I\subset\mathbb{R}$ is $[0,\infty)$ or $[0,π]$, $q(r)$ blows-up at $0$ and $w$ is subj…

This paper is devoted to study a class of integral type Brezis-Nirenbreg problem on the Heisenberg group. It is a class of new nonlinear integral equations on the bounded domains of Heisenberg group and related to the CR Yamabe problems on the CR manifold. Based on the sharp Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequalities, the nonexistence and existence results are obtained by Pohozaev type identity, variational method and blow-up analysis, respectively.
We construct positive solutions to the equation $$-Δ_{\mathbf{H}^n} u = u^{\frac{Q+2}{Q-2}}$$ on the Heisenberg group, singular in the origin, similar to the Fowler solutions of the Yamabe equations on $\mathbf{R}^n$. These satisfy the homogeneity property $u\circδ_T=T^{-\frac{Q-2}{2}}u$ for some $T$ large enough, where $Q=2n+2$ and $δ_T$ is the natural dilation in $\mathbf{H}^n$. We use the Lyapunov-Schmidt method applied to a family of approximate solutions built by periodization from the global regular solution classified by Jerison and Lee.
A partial solution of the quaternionic contact Yamabe problem on the quaternionic sphere is given. It is shown that the torsion of the Biquard connection vanishes exactly when the trace-free part of the horizontal Ricci tensor of the Biquard connection is zero and this occurs precisely on 3-Sasakian manifolods. All conformal deformations sending the standard flat torsion-free quaternionic contact structure on the quaternionic Heisenberg group to a quaternionic contact structure with vanishing torsion of the Biquard connection are explicitly described. A '3-Hamiltonian form' of infinitesimal co…
This article concerns a class of elliptic equations on Carnot groups depending on one real positive parameter and involving a subcritical nonlinearity (for the critical case we refer to G. As a special case of our results we prove the existence of at least one nontrivial solution for a subelliptic equation defined on a smooth and bounded domain $D$ of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n=\mathbb{C}^n\times \mathbb{R}$. The main approach is based on variational me…
