This paper contributes to extending the validity of Lyapunov function PDEs (in-vented by Fang and Gao in [SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, 18(2019), pp. 1163-1199]and whose solution is conjectured to be able to behave as a Lyapunov function) in stability analysisto more mass-action chemical reaction networks. By defining a new class of networks, called complexbalanced produced networks, we have proved that the Lyapunov function PDEs method is validin capturing the asymptotic stability of this class of networks, and also to their compound withany 1-dimensional independent network according to species and with any two-species autocatalyticnon-independent network if some moderate conditions are included. A notable point is that thesethree classes of networks are non-weakly reversible, any dimensional and of any deficiency. We applyour results to some practical biochemical reaction networks including birth-death processes, motifsrelated networks etc., to illustrate validity.
An integral formula is given representing the generalized principal Lyapunov estimate for random linear parabolic PDEs. As an application, an upper estimate of the exponent is obtained.
In this paper, we develop a method to generate the Lyapunov function for stability analysis for chemical reaction networks. Based on the Chemical Master Equation, we derive the Lyapunov Function partial differential equations (PDEs), whose solution approximates the scaling non-equilibrium potential and serves as the candidate Lyapunov function for the given network. We further prove that for any chemical reaction network the solution (if exists) of the PDEs is dissipative. Moreover, the proposed method of Lyapunov Function PDEs is qualified for analyzing the asymptotic stability of complex bal…
As it is well-known, the forwards and pullback dynamics are in general unrelated. In this paper we present an in-depth study of whether the pullback attractor is also a forwards attractor for the processes involved with the skew-product semiflow induced by a family of scalar non-autonomous reaction-diffusion equations which are linear in a neighbourhood of zero and have null upper Lyapunov exponent. Besides, the notion of Li-Yorke chaotic pullback attractor for a process is introduced, and we prove that this chaotic behaviour might occur for almost all the processes. When the problems are addi…
We investigate a broad family of chemical reaction networks (CRNs) assigned with mass action kinetics, called complex-balanced-produced-CRNs (CBP-CRNs), which are generated by any given complex balanced mass action system (MAS) and whose structures depend on the selection of producing matrices. Unluckily, the generally applied pseudoHelmholtz free energy function may fail to act as a Lyapunov function for the CBP-CRNs. Inspired by the method of Lyapunov function partial differential equations (PDEs), we construct one solution of their corresponding Lyapunov function PDEs, termed as the general…
In this paper, we propose a novel technique, referred to as the Lyapunov Function PDEs technique, to diagnose persistence of chemical reaction networks with mass-action kinetics. The technique allows that every network is attached to a Lyapuonv function PDE and a boundary condition whose solutions are expected to be Lyapunov functions for the network. By means of solution of the PDEs, either in the forms of itself or its time derivative, some checkable criteria are proposed for persistence of network systems. These criteria show high validity in proving that neither non-semilocking boundary po…
In this paper we obtain a detailed description of the global and cocycle attractors for the skew-product semiflows induced by the mild solutions of a family of scalar linear-dissipative parabolic problems over a minimal and uniquely ergodic flow. We consider the case of null upper Lyapunov exponent for the linear part of the problem. Then, two different types of attractors can appear, depending on whether the linear equations have a bounded or an unbounded associated real cocycle. In the first case (e.g.~in periodic equations), the structure of the attractor is simple, whereas in the second ca…
We present a framework to transform the problem of finding a Lyapunov function of a Chemical Reaction Network (CRN) in concentration coordinates with arbitrary monotone kinetics into finding a common Lyapunov function for a linear parameter varying system in reaction coordinates. Alternative formulations of the proposed Lyapunov function is presented also. This is applied to reinterpret previous results by the authors on Piecewise Linear in Rates Lyapunov functions, and to establish a link with contraction analysis. Persistence and uniqueness of equilibria are discussed also.
In this paper, we use rigorous numerics to compute several global smooth branches of steady states for a system of three reaction-diffusion PDEs introduced by Iida et al. [J. Math. Biol., {\bf 53}, 617--641 (2006)] to study the effect of cross-diffusion in competitive interactions. An explicit and mathematically rigorous construction of a global bifurcation diagram is done, except in small neighborhoods of the bifurcations. The proposed method, even though influenced by the work of van den Berg et al. [Math. Comp., {\bf 79}, 1565--1584 (2010)], introduces new analytic estimates, a new {\em glu…
Piecewise-Linear in Rates (PWLR) Lyapunov functions are introduced for a class of Chemical Reaction Networks (CRNs). In addition to their simple structure, these functions are robust with respect to arbitrary monotone reaction rates, of which mass-action is a special case. The existence of such functions ensures the convergence of trajectories towards equilibria, and guarantee their asymptotic stability with respect to the corresponding stoichiometric compatibility class. We give the definition of these Lyapunov functions, prove their basic properties, and provide algorithms for constructing t…
We consider the relationship between stationary distributions for stochastic models of reaction systems and Lyapunov functions for their deterministic counterparts. Specifically, we derive the well known Lyapunov function of reaction network theory as a scaling limit of the non-equilibrium potential of the stationary distribution of stochastically modeled complex balanced systems. We extend this result to general birth-death models and demonstrate via example that similar scaling limits can yield Lyapunov functions even for models that are not complex or detailed balanced, and may even have mu…
We construct an explicit Lyapunov function for scalar parabolic reaction-advection-diffusion equations under periodic boundary conditions. We assume the nonlinearity is even in the advection term. We follow a method originally suggested by Matano and Zelenyak for, and limited to, separated boundary conditions.
Quantitative estimates for the top Lyapunov exponents for systems of stochastic reaction-diffusion equations are proven. The treatment includes reaction potentials with degenerate minima. The proof relies on an asymptotic expansion of the invariant measure, with careful control on the resulting error terms. As a consequence of these estimates, synchronisation by noise is deduced for systems of stochastic reaction-diffusion equations for the first time.
In an earlier paper, we proved the validity of large deviations theory for the particle approximation of quite general chemical reaction networks (CRNs). In this paper, we extend its scope and present a more geometric insight into the mechanism of that proof, exploiting the notion of spherical image of the reaction polytope. This allows to view the asymptotic behavior of the vector field describing the mass-action dynamics of chemical reactions as the result of an interaction between the faces of this polytope in different dimensions. We also illustrate some local aspects of the problem in a d…
The dynamics of pulse solutions in a bistable reaction-diffusion system are studied analytically by reducing partial differential equations (PDEs) to finite-dimensional ordinary differential equations (ODEs). For the reduction, we apply the multiple-scales method to the mixed ODE-PDE system obtained by taking a singular limit of the PDEs. The reduced equations describe the interface motion of a pulse solution formed by two interacting front solutions. This motion is in qualitatively good agreement with that observed for the original PDE system. Furthermore, it is found that the reduction not o…
Unlike ODEs, whose models involve system matrices and whose controllers involve vector or matrix gains, PDE models involve functions in those roles functional coefficients, dependent on the spatial variables, and gain functions dependent on space as well. The designs of gains for controllers and observers for PDEs, such as PDE backstepping, are mappings of system model functions into gain functions. These infinite dimensional nonlinear operators are given in an implicit form through PDEs, in spatial variables, which need to be solved to determine the gain function for each new functional coeff…
We consider the Cauchy problems of a non-strictly hyperbolic system which describes the compressible Euler fluid with exothermic reaction. In this paper a Lyapunov-type functional is constructed for balance laws. By analysis of the flow generated by front tracking method, we prove the well-posedness theorems and present the local features of global solutions.
The aim of this paper is to study the dynamics of a reaction--diffusion SIS (susceptible-infectious-susceptible) epidemic model with a nonlinear incidence rate describing the transmission of a communicable disease between individuals. We prove that the proposed model has two steady states under one condition. By analyzing the eigenvalues and using the Routh--Hurwitz criterion and an appropriately constructed Lyapunov functional, we establish the local and global asymptotic stability of the non negative constant steady states subject to the basic reproduction number being greater than unity and…
We prove a center manifold theorem for rough partial differential equations (rough PDEs). The class of rough PDEs we consider contains as a key subclass reaction-diffusion equations driven by nonlinear multiplicative noise, where the stochastic forcing is given by a $γ$-Hölder rough path, for $γ\in(1/3,1/2]$. Our proof technique relies upon the theory of rough paths and analytic semigroups in combination with a discretized Lyapunov-Perron-type method in a suitable scale of interpolation spaces. The resulting center manifold is a random manifold in the sense of the theory of random dynamical sy…
