The dynamics of pulse solutions in a bistable reaction-diffusion system are studied analytically by reducing partial differential equations (PDEs) to finite-dimensional ordinary differential equations (ODEs). For the reduction, we apply the multiple-scales method to the mixed ODE-PDE system obtained by taking a singular limit of the PDEs. The reduced equations describe the interface motion of a pulse solution formed by two interacting front solutions. This motion is in qualitatively good agreement with that observed for the original PDE system. Furthermore, it is found that the reduction not only facilitates the analytical study of the pulse solution, especially the specification of the onset of local bifurcations, but also allows us to elucidate the global bifurcation structure behind the pulse behavior. As an application, the pulse dynamics in a heterogeneous bump-type medium are explored numerically and analytically. The reduced ODEs clarify the transition mechanisms between four pulse behaviors that occur at different parameter values.
The present paper is devoted to the study of existence, uniqueness and stability of transition fronts of nonlocal dispersal evolution equations in time heterogeneous media of bistable type under the unbalanced condition. We first study space nonincreasing transition fronts and prove various important qualitative properties, including uniform steepness, stability, uniform stability and exponential decaying estimates. Then, we show that any transition front, after certain space shift, coincides with a space nonincreasing transition front (if it exists), which implies the uniqueness, up to space …
We deal with heteroclinic planar fronts for parameter-dependent reaction-diffusion equations with bistable reaction and saturating diffusive term like $$ u_t=ε\, \textrm{div}\, \left(\frac{\nabla u}{\sqrt{1+\vert \nabla u \vert^2}}\right) + f(u), \quad u=u(x, t), \; x \in \textbf{R}^n, \, t \in \textbf{R}, $$ analyzing in particular their behavior for $ε\to 0$. First, we construct monotone and non-monotone planar traveling waves, using a change of variables allowing to analyze a two-point problem for a suitable first-order reduction; then, we investigate their asymptotic behavior for $ε\to 0$,…
Traveling fronts and stationary localized patterns in bistable reaction-diffusion systems have been broadly studied for classical continuous media and regular lattices. Analogs of such non-equilibrium patterns are also possible in networks. Here, we consider traveling and stationary patterns in bistable one-component systems on random Erdös-Rényi, scale-free and hierarchical tree networks. As revealed through numerical simulations, traveling fronts exist in network-organized systems. They represent waves of transition from one stable state into another, spreading over the entire network. The f…
Propagation of transition fronts in models of coupled oscillators with non-degenerate on-site potential is usually considered in terms of travelling waves. We show that the system dynamics can be reformulated as an implicit map structure, and the travelling waves correspond to stable fixed points. Therefore, the loss of stability of such waves should follow well-known generic bifurcation scenarios. Then, one can expect a plethora of qualitatively different propagating-front solutions - multistable, multi-periodic, quasiperiodic and chaotic.
We study the influence of a linear nonlocal spatial coupling on the interaction of fronts connecting two equivalent stable states in the prototypical 1-D real Ginzburg-Landau equation. While for local coupling the fronts are always monotonic and therefore the dynamical behavior leads to coarsening and the annihilation of pairs of fronts, nonlocal terms can induce spatial oscillations in the front, allowing for the creation of localized structures, emerging from pinning between two fronts. We show this for three different nonlocal influence kernels. The first two, mod-exponential and Gaussian, …
The present work studies the influence of nonlocal spatial coupling on the existence of localized structures in 1-dimensional extended systems. We consider systems described by a real field with a nonlocal coupling that has a linear dependence on the field. Leveraging spatial dynamics we provide a general framework to understand the effect of the nonlocality on the shape of the fronts connecting two stable states. In particular we show that non local terms can induce spatial oscillations in the front tails, allowing for the creation of localized structures, emerging from pinning between two fr…
Many physical, chemical and biological systems have an inherent discrete spatial structure that strongly influences their dynamical behaviour. Similar remarks apply to internal or external noise, as well as to nonlocal coupling. In this paper we study the combined effect of nonlocal spatial discretization and stochastic perturbations on travelling waves in the Nagumo equation, which is a prototypical model for bistable reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs). We prove that under suitable parameter conditions, various discrete-stochastic variants of the Nagumo equation have sol…
In this paper, we first use the super-sub solution method to prove the local exponential asymptotic stability of some entire solutions to reaction diffusion equations, including the bistable and monostable cases. In the bistable case, we not only obtain the similar asymptotic stability result given by Yagisita in 2003, but also simplify his proof. For the monostable case, it is the first time to discuss the local asymptotic stability of entire solutions. Next, we will discuss the asymptotic behavior of entire solutions of bistable equations as $t\rightarrow+\infty$, since the other side was co…
We discuss multichromatic front solutions to the bistable Nagumo lattice differential equation. Such fronts connect the stable spatially homogeneous equilibria with spatially heterogeneous $n$-periodic equilibria and hence are not monotonic like the standard monochromatic fronts. In contrast to the bichromatic case, our results show that these multichromatic fronts can disappear and reappear as the diffusion coefficient is increased. In addition, these multichromatic waves can travel in parameter regimes where the monochromatic fronts are also free to travel. This leads to intricate collision …
The current paper is devoted to the study of spreading speeds and transition fronts of lattice KPP equations in time heterogeneous media. We first prove the existence, uniqueness, and stability of spatially homogeneous entire positive solutions. Next, we establish lower and upper bounds of the (generalized) spreading speed intervals. Then, by constructing appropriate sub-solutions and super-solutions, we show the existence and continuity of transition fronts with given front position functions. Also, we prove the existence of some kind of critical front.
The current paper is devoted to the study of existence and non-existence of transition fronts for two species competition lattice system in random media, and explore the influence of randomness of the media on the wave profiles and wave speeds of such transition fronts. We first establish comparison principle for sub-solutions and super-solutions of the related cooperative system. Next, under some proper assumptions, we construct appropriate sub-solutions and super-solutions for the cooperative system. Finally, we show that random transition fronts exist if their least mean speed is greater th…
We discuss bichromatic (two-color) front solutions to the bistable Nagumo lattice differential equation. Such fronts connect the stable spatially homogeneous equilibria with spatially heterogeneous 2-periodic equilibria and hence are not monotonic like the standard monochromatic fronts. We provide explicit criteria that can determine whether or not these fronts are stationary and show that the bichromatic fronts can travel in parameter regimes where the monochromatic fronts are pinned. The presence of these bichromatic waves allows the two stable homogeneous equlibria to both spread out throug…
We present theoretical and experimental studies on pattern formation with bistable dynamical units coupled in a star network configuration. By applying a localized perturbation to the central or the peripheral elements, we demonstrate the subsequent spreading, pinning, or retraction of the activations; such analysis enables the characterization of the formation of stationary patterns of localized activity. The results are interpreted with a theoretical analysis of a simplified bistable reaction-diffusion model. Weak coupling results in trivial pinned states where the activation cannot propagat…
We study speeds of fronts in bistable, spatially inhomogeneous media at parameter regimes where speeds approach zero. We provide a set of conceptual assumptions under which we can prove power-law asymptotics for the speed, with exponent depending a local dimension of the ergodic measure near extremal values. We also show that our conceptual assumptions are satisfied in a context of weak inhomogeneity of the medium and almost balanced kinetics, and compare asymptotics with numerical simulations.
In this paper, we investigate the existence and stability of random transition fronts of KPP-type lattice equations in random media, and explore the influence of the media and randomness on the wave profiles and wave speeds of such solutions. We first establish comparison principle for sub-solutions and super-solutions of KPP type lattice random equations and prove the stability of positive constant equilibrium solution. Next, by constructing appropriate sub-solutions and super-solutions, we show the existence of random transition fronts. Finally, we prove the stability of random transition fr…
The present paper is devoted to the study of transition fronts of nonlocal Fisher-KPP equations in time heterogeneous media. We first construct transition fronts with prescribed interface location functions, which are natural generalizations of front location functions in homogeneous media. It it shown that these transition fronts have exact decaying rates as the space variable tends to infinity. Then, by the general results on space regularity of transition fronts of nonlocal evolution equations proven in the authors' earlier work (\cite{ShSh14-4}), these transition fronts are continuously di…
Stationary fronts connecting the trivial state and a cellular (distorted) hexagonal pattern in the Swift-Hohenberg equation with a quadratic-cubic nonlinearity are known to undergo a process of infinitely many folds as a parameter is varied, known as homoclinic snaking, where new hexagon cells are added to the core, leading to a region of infinitely-many, co-existing localized states. Outside the homoclinic snaking region, the hexagon fronts can invade the trivial state in a bursting fashion. In this paper, we use a far-field core decomposition to set up a numerical path-following routine to t…
We consider a class of singularly perturbed 2-component reaction-diffusion equations which admit bistable traveling front solutions, manifesting as sharp, slow-fast-slow, interfaces between stable homogeneous rest states. In many example systems, such as models of desertification fronts in dryland ecosystems, such fronts can exhibit an instability by which the interface destabilizes into fingering patterns. Motivated by the appearance of such patterns, we propose two versions of a 2D stability criterion for (transversal) long wavelength perturbations along the interface of these traveling slow…
The existence of traveling front solutions to bistable lattice differential equations in the absence of a comparison principle is studied. The results are in the spirit of those in Bates, Chen, and Chmaj in[1], but are applicable to vector equations and to more general limiting systems. An abstract result on the persistence of traveling wave solutions is obtained and is then applied to lattice differential equations with repelling first and/or second neighbor interactions and to some problems with infinite range interactions.
