Perhaps the greatest challenge for fundamental theories based on compactification from extra dimensions is accommodating a period of accelerated cosmological expansion. Previous studies have identified constraints imposed by the existence of dark energy for two overlapping classes of compactified theories: (1) those in which the higher dimensional picture satisfies certain metric properties selected to reproduce known low energy phenomenology; or (2) those derived from string theory assuming they satisfy the Swampland conjectures. For either class, the analyses showed that dark energy is only possible if it takes the form of quintessence. In this paper, we explore the consequences for theories that belong to both classes and show that the joint constraints are highly restrictive, leaving few options.
In this recent Letter [1], we studied the implications of string Swampland conjectures for quintessence models of dark energy. A couple of days ago, a paper appeared [2] which refers to our work but misrepresents what we have done. Here, we set the record straight.
We discuss the prospects of measuring deviations of the dark energy equation of state from w=-1 by using the swampland conjectures to relate inflationary models to quintessence scenarios. This note is based on work done by the author with H. Murayama and C. Chiang arXiv:1811.01987.
We use Swampland principles to theoretically disfavor regions of the parameter space of dark matter and other darkly charged particles that may exist. The Festina Lente bound, the analogue of the Weak-Gravity conjecture in de Sitter, places constraints on the mass and charge of dark particles, which here we show cover regions in parameter space that are currently allowed by observations. As a consequence, a broad set of new ultra-light particles are in the Swampland, independently of their cosmic abundance, showing the complementarity of Quantum Gravity limits with laboratory and astrophysical…
It was recently pointed out that the existence of dark energy imposes highly restrictive constraints on effective field theories that satisfy the Swampland conjectures. We provide a critical confrontation of these constraints with the cosmological framework emerging from the Salam-Sezgin model and its string realization by Cvetic, Gibbons, and Pope. We also discuss the implication of the constraints for string model building.
The string theory swampland proposes that there is no UV-completion for an effective field theory with an exact (metastable) de Sitter vacua, thereby ruling out standard $Λ$CDM cosmology if the conjecture is taken seriously. The swampland criteria have also been shown to be in sharp tension with quintessence models under current and forthcoming observational bounds. As a logical next step, we introduce higher derivative self-interactions in the low-energy effective Lagrangian and show that one can satisfy observational constraints as well as the swampland criteria for some specific models. In …
We point out that the recently proposed Swampland conjecture on the potential gradient can lead to isocurvature perturbations of dark energy, if the quintessence field acquires large quantum fluctuations during high-scale inflation preferred by the conjecture. Also, if the quintessence field is coupled to a dark sector that contains dark matter, isocurvature perturbation of dark matter is similarly induced. Both isocurvature perturbations can be suppressed if the quintessence potential allows a tracker solution in the early Universe. We find that a vector field of mass $\lesssim {\cal O}(1)$ m…
In this Letter, we study the implications of string Swampland criteria for dark energy in view of ongoing and future cosmological observations. If string theory should be the ultimate quantum gravity theory, there is evidence that exact de Sitter solutions with a positive cosmological constant cannot describe the fate of the late-time universe. Even though cosmological models with dark energy given by a scalar field $π$ evolving in time are not in direct tension with string theory, they have to satisfy the Swampland criteria $|Δπ|<d\sim\mathcal{O}(1)$ and $|V'|/V>c\sim\mathcal{O}(1)$, where $V…
We discuss the relations between swampland conjectures and observational constraints on both inflation and dark energy. Using the requirement $|\nabla V|\geq c V$, with $c$ as a universal constant whose value can be derived from inflation, there may be no observable distinction between constant and non-constant models of dark energy. However, the latest modification of the above conjecture, which utilizes the second derivative of the potential, opens up the opportunity for observations to determine if the dark energy equation of state deviates from that of a cosmological constant. We also comm…
We present a general model-independent approach to study the coupled dark energy and the string Swampland criteria. We show how the dark sector interaction is degenerated with the equation of state of dark energy in the context of the expansion of the Universe. With priors for either of them, the dynamics of dark energy and the dark sector interactions can be reconstructed together with the bounds of the Swampland criteria. Combining cosmic chronometers, baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and Type Ia supernovae our results suggest a mild $1 σ$ significance of dark sector interactions at low re…
Swampland Conjectures have attracted quite some interest in the Cosmological Community. They have been shown to have wide ranging implications , like Constraints on Inflationary Models, Primordial Black Holes etc. to name a few. A particularly revealing insight on dark energy also shows that one can have the dark energy equation of state for a quintessence scenario to be signficantly different than -1 after one takes into account the refined dS conjecture. Another interesting issue with the swampland conjectures is that they have been shown to be incompatible with single field inflationary mod…
Motivated by the swampland dS conjecture, we consider a rolling scalar field as the source of dark energy. Furthermore, the swampland distance conjecture suggests that the rolling field will lead at late times to an exponentially light tower of states. Identifying this tower as residing in the dark sector suggests a natural coupling of the scalar field to the dark matter, leading to a continually reducing dark matter mass as the scalar field rolls in the recent cosmological epoch. The exponent in the distance conjecture, $\tilde{c}$, is expected to be an $\mathcal{O}(1)$ number. Interestingly,…
Constraints on a dark energy dominated Universe are obtained from an interplay between Bayesian Machine Learning and string Swampland criteria. The approach here differs from previous studies, since in the generative process Swampland criteria are used and, only later, the results of the fit are validated, by using observational data-sets. A generative process based Bayesian Learning approach is applied to two models and the results are validated by means of available $H(z)$ data. For the first model, a parametrization of the Hubble constant is considered and, for the second, a parametrization…
In this Letter, we consider the model-independent reconstruction of the expansion and growth functions from the Pantheon supernova data. The method relies on developing the expansion function in terms of shifted Chebyshev polynomials and determining the coefficients of the polynomials by a maximum-likelihood fit to the data. Having obtained the expansion function in a model-independent way, we can then also determine the growth function without assuming a particular model. We then compare the results with the predictions of two classes of Dark Energy models, firstly a class of quintessence sca…
Implications of the string Swampland criteria for a dark energy dominated universe, obtained by using Gaussian processes and $H(z)$ data analysis, are discussed. In particular, the Swampland criteria for a scalar-field dark energy, without assuming any specific form for the potential. By allowing the Gaussian process to reconstruct the form of the potential from $H(z)$ data, upper bounds on the second Swampland criterion (involving $|V^{\prime}|/V$) for two different kernel functions (the squared exponential and Matern~($ν= 9/2$) kernels) are estimated . The approach here differs from previous…
In this work we focus on the phase space singularities of interactive quintessence model in the presence of matter fluid. This model is related to swampland studies, that the outcomes affect all these Swampland related models with the same dynamical system. We shall form the dynamical system corresponding to the cosmological system, which is eventually autonomous, and by using the dominant balances technique we shall investigate the occurrence or not of finite-time singularities. Our results indicate that the dynamical system of the model may develop finite-time singularities, but these are no…
In this paper, we studied the phenomenological consequences of recently proposed swampland conjecture on the inflationary models though constraints on reheating. If dark matter is assumed to be produced during reheating, the conjecture will provide further constraints on the dark matter parameter space through its current relic abundance. As has been pointed out already and also analyzed in our present paper any successful inflationary scenario is in clear tension with the aforementioned conjecture in its current form. However considering the swampland parameters to be free and constrained by …
Very recently, it was suggested that combining the Swampland program with the smallness of the dark energy and confronting these ideas to experiment lead to the prediction of the existence of a single extra-dimension (dubbed the dark dimension) with characteristic length-scale in the micron range. We show that the rate of Hawking radiation slows down for black holes perceiving the dark dimension and discuss the impact of our findings in assessing the dark matter fraction that could be composed of primordial black holes. We demonstrate that for a species scale of ${\cal O}(10^{10}~{\rm GeV})$, …
It has recently been argued that string theory does not admit de Sitter vacua. This would imply that the current accelerated expansion of the universe is not driven by a cosmological constant (or vacuum energy) but by other means such as a quintessential scalar field. Such a scalar field is in general expected to couple to at least some matter species, such as dark matter. Cosmological observations already constrain such dark matter couplings strongly. We argue that there are a number of interesting scenarios to be explored, such as coupling functions which possess a minimum at finite field va…
The de Sitter Swampland conjecture compels us to consider dark energy models where $λ(ϕ) \equiv |\nabla_ϕ V|/V$ is bounded below by a positive constant. Moreover, it has been argued for Quintessence models that the constant $λ$ scenario is the least constrained. Here we demonstrate that increasing $λ$ only exacerbates existing tension in the Hubble constant $H_0$. The identification of dark energy models that both evade observational bounds and alleviate $H_0$ tension constitutes a robust test for the Swampland program.
We study a model of the emergent dark universe, which lives on the time-like hypersurface in a five-dimensional bulk spacetime. The holographic fluid on the hypersurface is assumed to play the role of the dark sector, mainly including the dark energy and apparent dark matter. Based on the modified Friedmann equations, we present a Markov-Chain-Monte-Carlo analysis with the observational data, including type Ia Supernova and the direct measurement of the Hubble constant. We obtain a good fitting result and the matter component turns out to be small enough, which matches well with our theoretica…

We study constraints imposed by two proposed string Swampland criteria on cosmology. These criteria involve an upper bound on the range traversed by scalar fields as well as a lower bound on $|\nabla_ϕ V|/V$ when $V >0$. We find that inflationary models are generically in tension with these two criteria. Applying these same criteria to dark energy in the present epoch, we find that specific quintessence models can satisfy these bounds and, at the same time, satisfy current observational constraints. Assuming the two Swampland criteria are valid, we argue that the universe will undergo a phase …
We consider a class of exponential models of $f(R)$ gravity, in the presence of a canonical scalar field, for which at early times the effective Lagrangian of the theory becomes that of a rescaled canonical scalar field with the Einstein-Hilbert term becoming $\sim αR$, with $α$ a dimensionless constant. This rescaled Einstein-Hilbert scalar field theory at early times alters the inflationary phenomenology of well-known scalar field models of inflation, but more importantly, in the context of this rescaled theory, the Swampland criteria are easily satisfied, assuming that the scalar field is s…
In this work we shall investigate the singularity structure of the phase space corresponding to an exponential quintessence dark energy model recently related to swampland models. The dynamical system corresponding to the cosmological system is an autonomous polynomial dynamical system, and by using a mathematical theorem we shall investigate whether finite-time singularities can occur in the dynamical system variables. As we demonstrate, the solutions of the dynamical system are non-singular for all cosmic times and this result is general, meaning that the initial conditions corresponding to …
Local determinations of the Hubble constant $H_0$ favour a higher value than Planck based on CMB and $Λ$CDM. Through a model-independent expansion, we show that low redshift ($z \lesssim 0.7$) data comprising baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), cosmic chronometers and Type Ia supernovae has a preference for Quintessence models that lower $H_0$ relative to $Λ$CDM. In addition, we confirm that an exponential coupling to dark matter cannot alter this conclusion in the same redshift range. Our results leave open the possibility that a coupling in the matter-dominated epoch, potentially even in the…
We consider the interplay of the Early Dark Energy (EDE) model, the Swampland Distance Conjecture (SDC), and cosmological parameter tensions. EDE is a proposed resolution of the Hubble tension relying upon a near-Planckian scalar field excursion, while the SDC predicts an exponential sensitivity of masses of other fields to such an excursion, $m\propto e^{-c|Δϕ|/M_{\rm pl}}$ with $c\sim{\cal O}(1)$. Meanwhile, EDE is in tension with large-scale structure (LSS) data, due to shifts in the standard $Λ$CDM parameters necessary to fit the cosmic microwave background (CMB). One might hope that a pro…
In the Ijjas-Steinhardt cyclic model, the universe passes through phases dominated by radiation, matter, and a dark energy scalar field, with the value of the scale factor increasing with each cycle. Since each cycle terminates in a finite time, it is straightforward to calculate the fraction of time that the universe spends in a state for which the matter and dark energy densities have comparable magnitudes; when this fraction is large, it can be taken as a solution of the coincidence problem. This solution of the coincidence problem requires a relatively short lifetime for each cycle, but un…
We point out that the swampland conjectures, forbidding the presence of global symmetries and (meta-)stable de Sitter vacua within quantum gravity, pick up a dynamical axion for the electroweak SU(2) gauge theory as a natural candidate for the quintessence field. The potential energy of the electroweak axion provides an attractive candidate for the dark energy. We discuss constraints from the weak gravity conjecture, from the conjecture of no global symmetry, and from observations, which can be satisfied elegantly in a supersymmetric extension of the standard model.
The recently proposed Swampland Criteria aim to evade any (meta-)stable de Sitter constructions within String landscapes, making it difficult to accommodate accelerating phases, like dark energy domination and inflationary epoch, in cosmology. In this note, we analyse the status of various models of single field slow-roll inflation given the old as well as the refined Swampland conjectures, which constrain the form of scalar potentials in any low energy effective field theory residing in the landscapes. In particular, we note that Warm Inflation turns out to be the most befitting scenario as l…
It has recently been conjectured that string theory does not admit de Sitter vacua, and that quintessence explains the current epoch of accelerated cosmic expansion. A proposed, key prediction of this scenario is time-varying couplings in the dark sector, induced by the evolving quintessence field. We note that cosmological models with varying couplings suffer from severe problems with quantum corrections, beyond those shared by all quintessence models. The vacuum energy depends on all masses and couplings of the theory, and even small variations of parameters can lead to overwhelmingly large …
Motivated by principles from the Swampland program, which characterize requirements for a consistent UV completion of quantum gravity, combined with observational data, we are led to a unique corner of the quantum gravity landscape. In particular, using the Distance/Duality conjecture and the smallness of dark energy, we predict the existence of a light tower of states and a unique extra mesoscopic dimension of length $l\sim Λ^{-\frac{1}{4}}\sim 10^{-6}\, m$, with extra massless fermions propagating on it. This automatically leads to a candidate for a tower of sterile neutrinos, and an associa…
We discuss the viability of $f(R)$ and Brans-Dicke theories of gravity in light of the recent Swampland conjectures. We show that in the case of perfect fluid domination the swampland conjecture conditions may be easily satisfied and therefore we focus on the constraints in the vacuum theory. We derive the conditions for the swampland conjectures in $f(R)$ and Brans-Dicke framework, and find that a large portion of the parameter space is not allowed. Furthermore, we analyze particular $f(R)$ models of inflation and dark energy and in their case we set the allowed range of $R$.
Stringent Swampland conjectures aimed at effective theories containing massive abelian vectors have recently been proposed (arXiv:1808.09966), with striking phenomenological implications. In this article, we show how effective theories that parametrically violate the proposed conjectures can be UV-completed into theories that satisfy them. The UV-completion is accessible through both the Stückelberg and Higgs mechanisms, with all dimensionless parameters taking $\mathcal{O}(1)$ values from the UV perspective. These constructions feature an IR limit containing a light vector that is parametrica…
We investigate the implications of string Swampland criteria for alternative theories of gravity. Even though this has not rigorously been proven, there is some evidence that exact de-Sitter solutions with a positive cosmological constant cannot be successfully embedded into string theory, and that the low energy effective field theories containing a scalar field $π$ with a potential $V$ in the habitable landscape should satisfy the Swampland criteria $|V'|/V\ge c\sim\mathcal{O}(1)$. As a paradigmatic class of modified gravity theories for inflation and dark energy, we consider the extensively…
We consider the implications of the swampland conjectures on scalar-tensor theories defined in the Einstein frame in which the scalar interaction is screened. We show that chameleon models are not in the swampland provided the coupling to matter is larger than unity and the mass of the scalar field is much larger than the Hubble rate. We apply these conditions to the inverse power law chameleon and the symmetron. We then focus on the dilaton of string theory in the strong coupling limit, as defined in the string frame. We show that solar system tests of gravity imply that viable dilaton models…
Theories with a pole in the kinetic term have been used to great effect in studying inflation, owing to their quantum stability and attractor properties. We explore the use of such pole kinetic terms in dark energy theories, finding an interesting link between thawing and freezing models, and the possibility of enhanced plateaus with ``superattractor''-like behavior. We assess the observational viability of pole dark energy, showing that simple models can give dark energy equation of state evolution with $w(z)<-0.9$ even for potentials that could not normally achieve this easily. The kinetic t…
The recently proposed de Sitter swampland conjecture excludes local extrema of a scalar potential with a positive energy density in a low energy effective theory. Under the conjecture, the observed dark energy cannot be explained by the cosmological constant. The local maximum of the Higgs potential at the symmetric point also contradicts with the conjecture. In order to make the Standard Model consistent with the conjecture, it has been proposed to introduce a quintessence field, $Q$, which couples to the cosmological constant and the local maximum of the Higgs potential. In this paper, we sh…
We propose a simple, well-motivated and robust alternative to a metastable de Sitter vacuum in string theory, consistent with current observations of dark energy and naturally satisfying conjectured swampland constraints. Inflation ends in a supersymmetric Minkowski minimum, with a flat direction that is protected by non-renormalisation theorems. At some scale non-perturbative effects kick in, inducing a runaway scalar potential. The tail of this runaway potential cannot sustain a late-time dominating, slow-roll quintessence. However, the potential always contains a dS maximum. If the modulus …
It has very recently been realized that coupling branes to higher dimensional quantum gravity theories and considering the consistency of what lives on the branes, one is able to understand whether such theories can belong either to the swampland or to the landscape. In this regard, in the present work, we study a warm inflation model embedded in the Randall-Sundrum braneworld scenario. It is explicitly shown that this model belongs to the landscape by supporting a strong dissipative regime with an inflaton steep exponential potential. The presence of extra dimension effects from the braneworl…
The dS swampland conjecture $|\nabla V|/V \geq c$, where $c$ is presumed to be a positive constant of order unity, implies that the dark energy density of our Universe can not be a cosmological constant, but mostly the potential energy of an evolving quintessence scalar field. As the dark energy includes the effects of the electroweak symmetry breaking and the QCD chiral symmetry breaking, if the dS swampland conjecture is applicable for the low energy quintessence potential, it can be applied for the Higgs and pion potential also. On the other hand, the Higgs and pion potential has the well-k…
We consider cosmological aspects of the Dark Dimension (a mesoscopic dimension of micron scale), which has recently been proposed as the unique corner of the quantum gravity landscape consistent with both the Swampland criteria and observations. In particular we show how this leads, by the universal coupling of the Standard Model sector to bulk gravitons, to massive spin 2 KK excitations of the graviton in the dark dimension (the "dark gravitons") as an unavoidable dark matter candidate. Assuming a lifetime for the current de Sitter phase of our universe of order Hubble, which follows from bot…
We revisit the nonsupersymmetric SO(16)x SO(16)' model in light of LHC and Dark Energy data. Recently nonsupersymmetric models have become of great interest because the LHC has not found evidence of supersymmetry. In addition nonsupersymmetric models with a single Higgs-like field and small one loop vacuum energy have been constructed. Also models of dark energy with a dilaton-radion potential have also been recently examined in the light of dark energy data and the swampland conjecture. In this paper some of the features of the nonsupersymmetric SO(16)x SO(16)' model with regards to high ener…
We numerically and analytically explore the background cosmological dynamics of multifield dark energy with highly nongeodesic or "spinning" field-space trajectories. These extensions of standard single-field quintessence possess appealing theoretical features and observable differences from the cosmological standard model. At the level of the cosmological background, we perform a phase-space analysis and identify approximate attractors with late-time acceleration for a wide range of initial conditions. Focusing on two classes of field-space geometry, we derive bounds on parameter space by dem…
We investigate classically non-singular bounces caused by dark energy. In the presence of positive spatial curvature, vacuum energy, either in the form of a cosmological constant or a scalar field potential, allows for an open set of initial conditions leading to non-singular bounces, without any violation of the null energy condition. We study anisotropic Bianchi IX cosmologies, and demonstrate that they can even have multiple bounces, accompanied by intricate evolutions of the anisotropies that provide a non-singular analogue of mixmaster crunches. The relation of these solutions to more com…
We argue that dark energy with multiple fields is theoretically well-motivated and predicts distinct observational signatures, in particular when cosmic acceleration takes place along a trajectory that is highly non-geodesic in field space. Such models provide novel physics compared to $Λ$CDM and quintessence by allowing cosmic acceleration on steep potentials. From the theoretical point of view, these theories can easily satisfy the conjectured swampland constraints and may in certain cases be technically natural, potential problems which are endemic to standard single-field dark energy. Obse…
By combining swampland conjectures with observational data, it was suggested that our universe should lie in an asymptotic region of the quantum gravity landscape. The generalized distance conjecture for dS, the smallness of the cosmological constant and astrophysical constraints led to a scenario with one mesoscopic large dimension of size $\ell\sim Λ^{-1/4}\sim 10^{-6}$m. We point out that a strongly warped throat with its redshifted KK tower provides a natural string theoretic mechanism that realizes the scaling $m\sim Λ^α$ with the factor $α=1/4$, the dark dimension being the one along the…
