Phase-field fracture models lead to variational problems that can be written as a coupled variational equality and inequality system. Numerically, such problems can be treated with Galerkin finite elements and primal-dual active set methods. Specifically, low-order and high-order finite elements may be employed, where, for the latter, only few studies exist to date. The most time-consuming part in the discrete version of the primal-dual active set (semi-smooth Newton) algorithm consists in the solutions of changing linear systems arising at each semi-smooth Newton step. We propose a new parallel matrix-free monolithic multigrid preconditioner for these systems. We provide two numerical tests, and discuss the performance of the parallel solver proposed in the paper. Furthermore, we compare our new preconditioner with a block-AMG preconditioner available in the literature.
Discrete Fracture Network models are largely used for very large scale geological flow simulations. For this reason numerical methods require an investigation of tools for efficient parallel solutions on High Performance Computing systems. In this paper we discuss and compare several partitioning and reordering strategies, that result to be highly efficient and scalable, overperforming the classical mesh partitioning approach used to partition a conforming mesh among several processes.
The phase-field fracture free-energy functional is non-convex with respect to the displacement and the phase field. This results in a poor performance of the conventional monolithic solvers like the Newton-Raphson method. In order to circumvent this issue, researchers opt for the alternate minimization (staggered) solvers. Staggered solvers are robust for the phase-field based fracture simulations as the displacement and the phase-field sub-problems are convex in nature. Nevertheless, the staggered solver requires very large number of iterations (of the order of thousands) to converge. In this…

There is currently an increasing interest in developing efficient solvers for phase-field modeling of brittle fracture. The governing equations for this problem originate from a constrained minimization of a non-convex energy functional, and the most commonly used solver is a staggered solution scheme. This is known to be robust compared to the monolithic Newton method, however, the staggered scheme often requires many iterations to converge when cracks are evolving. The focus of our work is to accelerate the solver through a scheme that sequentially applies Anderson acceleration and over-rela…
We develop a robust matrix-free, communication avoiding parallel, high-degree polynomial preconditioner for the Conjugate Gradient method for large and sparse symmetric positive definite linear systems. We discuss the selection of a scaling parameter aimed at avoiding unwanted clustering of eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrices at the extrema of the spectrum. We use this preconditioned framework to solve a $3 \times 3$ block system arising in the simulation of fluid flow in large-size discrete fractured networks. We apply our polynomial preconditioner to a suitable Schur complement relate…
A new numerical scheme is proposed for flow computation in complex discrete fracture networks. The method is based on a three-field formulation of the Darcy law for the description of the hydraulic head on the fractures and uses a cost functional to enforce the required coupling condition at fracture intersections. The resulting method can handle non conforming meshes, independently built on each geometrical object of the computational domain, and ensures local mass conservation properties at fracture intersections. An iterative solver is devised for the method, ready for parallel implementati…
In this work, we consider fracture propagation in nearly incompressible and (fully) incompressible materials using a phase-field formulation. We use a mixed form of the elasticity equation to overcome volume locking effects and develop a robust, nonlinear and linear solver scheme and preconditioner for the resulting system. The coupled variational inequality system, which is solved monolithically, consists of three unknowns: displacements, pressure, and phase-field. Nonlinearities due to coupling, constitutive laws, and crack irreversibility are solved using a combined Newton algorithm for the…
Accurate and efficient numerical simulation of unconventional reservoirs is challenging. Long periods of transient flow and steep potential gradients occur due to the extreme conductivity contrast between matrix and fracture. Detailed near-well/near-fracture models are necessary to provide sufficient resolution, but they are computationally impractical for field cases with multiple fracture stages. Previous works in the literature of unconventional simulations mainly focus on gridding level that adapts to wells and fractures. Limited research has been conducted on nonlinear strategies that exp…
Discretization of flow in fractured porous media commonly lead to large systems of linear equations that require dedicated solvers. In this work, we develop an efficient linear solver and its practical implementation for mixed-dimensional scalar elliptic problems. We design an effective preconditioner based on approximate block factorization and algebraic multigrid techniques. Numerical results on benchmarks with complex fracture structures demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed linear solver and its robustness with respect to different physical and discretization parameters.
This paper proposes a parallel numerical algorithm to simulate the flow and the transport in a discrete fracture network taking into account the mass exchanges with the surrounding matrix. The discretization of the Darcy fluxes is based on the Vertex Approximate Gradient finite volume scheme adapted to polyhedral meshes and to heterogeneous anisotropic media, and the transport equation is discretized by a first order upwind scheme combined with an Euler explicit integration in time. The parallelization is based on the SPMD (Single Program, Multiple Data) paradigm and relies on a distribution o…
We present OBMeshfree, an Optimization-Based Meshfree solver for compactly supported nonlocal integro-differential equations (IDEs) that can describe material heterogeneity and brittle fractures. OBMeshfree is developed based on a quadrature rule calculated via an equality constrained least square problem to reproduce exact integrals for polynomials. As such, a meshfree discretization method is obtained, whose solution possesses the asymptotically compatible convergence to the corresponding local solution. Moreover, when fracture occurs, this meshfree formulation automatically provides a sharp…
Non-linear phase field models are increasingly used for the simulation of fracture propagation models. The numerical simulation of fracture networks of realistic size requires the efficient parallel solution of large coupled non-linear systems. Although in principle efficient iterative multi-level methods for these types of problems are available, they are not widely used in practice due to the complexity of their parallel implementation. Here, we present Utopia, which is an open-source C++ library for parallel non-linear multilevel solution strategies. Utopia provides the advantages of high-l…
We present a novel hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method on unfitted meshes for single-phase Darcy flow in a fractured porous media. In particular we apply the HDG methodology to the recently introduced reinterpreted discrete fracture model (RDFM) [Xu & Yang, 2021 submitted] that use Dirac-$δ$ functions to model both conductive and blocking fractures. Due to the use of Dirac-$δ$ function approach for the fractures, our numerical scheme naturally allows for unfitted meshes with respect to the fractures, which is the major novelty of the proposed scheme. Moreover, the scheme is locall…
We propose and analyze a Vanka-type multigrid solver for solving a sequence of complex-shifted Laplacian systems arising in diagonalization-based parallel-in-time algorithms for evolutionary equations. Under suitable assumption, local Fourier analysis shows the proposed Vanka-type smoother achieves a uniform smoothing factor, which is verified by several numerical examples.
In this work, we present a novel class of parallelizable high-order time integration schemes for the approximate solution of additive ODEs. The methods achieve high order through a combination of a suitable quadrature formula involving multiple derivatives of the ODE's right-hand side and a predictor-corrector ansatz. The latter approach is designed in such a way that parallelism in time is made possible. We present thorough analysis as well as numerical results that showcase scaling opportunities of methods from this class of solvers.
This paper presents the results of a preliminary experimental investigation of the performance of a stationary iterative method based on a block staircase splitting for solving singular systems of linear equations arising in Markov chain modelling. From the experiments presented, we can deduce that the method is well suited for solving block banded or more generally localized systems in a parallel computing environment. The parallel implementation has been benchmarked using several Markovian models.
The DD-CPM software library provides a set of tools for the discretization and solution of problems arising from the closest point method (CPM) for partial differential equations on surfaces. The solvers are built on top of the well-known PETSc framework, and are supplemented by custom domain decomposition (DD) preconditioners specific to the CPM. These solvers are fully compatible with distributed memory parallelism through MPI. This library is particularly well suited to the solution of elliptic and parabolic equations, including many reaction-diffusion equations. The software is detailed he…
The time harmonic Maxwell equations are of current interest in computational science and applied mathematics with many applications in modern physics. In this work, we present parallel finite element solver for the time harmonic Maxwell equations and compare different preconditioners. We show numerically that standard preconditioners like incomplete LU and the additive Schwarz method lead to slow convergence for iterative solvers like generalized minimal residuals, especially for high wave numbers. Even more we show that also more specialized methods like the Schur complement method also yield…

Failure trajectories, identifying the probable failure zones, and damage statistics are some of the key quantities of relevance in brittle fracture applications. High-fidelity numerical solvers that reliably estimate these relevant quantities exist but they are computationally demanding requiring a high resolution of the crack. Moreover, independent intensive simulations need to be carried out even for a small change in domain parameters and/or material properties. Therefore, fast and generalizable surrogate models are needed to alleviate the computational burden but the discontinuous nature o…
This paper describes in detail the implementation of a finite element technique for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations that is provably robust and demonstrates excellent performance on modern computer hardware. The method is second-order accurate in time and space. Robustness here means that the method is proved to be invariant domain preserving under the hyperbolic CFL time step restriction, and the method delivers results that are reproducible. The proposed technique is shown to be accurate on challenging 2D and 3D realistic benchmarks.

In this work we aim to develop a unified mathematical framework and a reliable computational approach to model the brittle fracture in heterogeneous materials with variability in material microstructures, and to provide statistic metrics for quantities of interest, such as the fracture toughness. To depict the material responses and naturally describe the nucleation and growth of fractures, we consider the peridynamics model. In particular, a stochastic state-based peridynamic model is developed, where the micromechanical parameters are modeled by a finite-dimensional random vector, or a combi…
We introduce an ODE solver for the PyTorch ecosystem that can solve multiple ODEs in parallel independently from each other while achieving significant performance gains. Our implementation tracks each ODE's progress separately and is carefully optimized for GPUs and compatibility with PyTorch's JIT compiler. Its design lets researchers easily augment any aspect of the solver and collect and analyze internal solver statistics. In our experiments, our implementation is up to 4.3 times faster per step than other ODE solvers and it is robust against within-batch interactions that lead other solve…
We present a scalability study of Golub-Kahan bidiagonalization for the parallel iterative solution of symmetric indefinite linear systems with a 2x2 block structure. The algorithms have been implemented within the parallel numerical library PETSc. Since a nested inner-outer iteration strategy may be necessary, we investigate different choices for the inner solvers, including parallel sparse direct and multigrid accelerated iterative methods. We show the strong and weak scalability of the Golub-Kahan bidiagonalization based iterative method when applied to a two-dimensional Poiseuille flow and…
Numerical solutions to the Eikonal equation are computed using variants of the fast marching method, the fast sweeping method, and the fast iterative method. In this paper, we provide a unified view of these algorithms that highlights their similarities and suggests a wider class of Eikonal solvers. We then use this framework to justify applying concurrent priority scheduling techniques to Eikonal solvers. We demonstrate that doing so results in good parallel performance for a problem from seismology. We explain why existing Eikonal solvers may produce different results despite using the same …
We present a parallel hierarchical solver for general sparse linear systems on distributed-memory machines. For large-scale problems, this fully algebraic algorithm is faster and more memory-efficient than sparse direct solvers because it exploits the low-rank structure of fill-in blocks. Depending on the accuracy of low-rank approximations, the hierarchical solver can be used either as a direct solver or as a preconditioner. The parallel algorithm is based on data decomposition and requires only local communication for updating boundary data on every processor. Moreover, the computation-to-co…
Sequential numerical methods for integrating initial value problems (IVPs) can be prohibitively expensive when high numerical accuracy is required over the entire interval of integration. One remedy is to integrate in a parallel fashion, "predicting" the solution serially using a cheap (coarse) solver and "correcting" these values using an expensive (fine) solver that runs in parallel on a number of temporal subintervals. In this work, we propose a time-parallel algorithm (GParareal) that solves IVPs by modelling the correction term, i.e. the difference between fine and coarse solutions, using…
