We study dynamical self-localization of gauge theories in higher dimensions. Specifically, we consider a 5D $U(1)$ gauge theory in the linear dilaton (clockwork) background, with anisotropic gauge couplings along the transverse (fifth) direction and the longitudinal (four-dimensional) directions. By using lattice techniques, we calculate the space plaquettes and the helicity moduli and we determine the phase diagram of the model. We find strong evidence that the model exhibits a new phase, a layer phase, where the four-dimensional physics decouples from the five-dimensional dynamics. The layer phase corresponds to a strong force along the fifth direction and a Coulomb phase along the four-dimensional longitudinal directions. This is in accordance with the clockwork mechanism where light particles with exponentially suppressed interactions are generated in theories with no fundamental small parameters.
I calculate the potential of a pointlike particle carrying SU$(N_c)$ charge in a gauge theory with a dilaton. The solution depends on boundary conditions imposed on the dilaton: For a dilaton that vanishes at infinity the resulting potential is of the form $(r+r_ϕ)^{-1}$, with $r_ϕ$ inverse proportional to the decay constant of the dilaton. Another natural constraint for the dilaton $ϕ$ is independence of $\frac{1}{g^2}\exp(\fracϕ{f_ϕ})$ from the gauge coupling $g$. This requirement yields a potential proportional to $r$ and makes it impossible to create an isolated SU$(N_c)$ charge.
A genuine dilaton $σ$ allows scales to exist even in the limit of exact conformal invariance. In gauge theories, these may occur at an infrared fixed point (IRFP) $α_{\text{IR}}$ through dimensional transmutation. These large scales at $α_{\text{IR}}$ can be separated from small scales produced by $θ^μ_μ$, the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. For quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the conformal limit can be combined with chiral $SU(3) \times SU(3)$ symmetry to produce chiral-scale perturbation theory $χ$PT$_σ$, with $f_0(500)$ as the dilaton. The technicolor (TC) analogue of this is crawling TC…
The resonant and non-resonant amplification of electromagnetic inhomogeneities is investigated within a phase of coherent dilaton oscillations. We show, in some explicit toy model, how the critical energy density bound applied to the amplified fluctuations of the massless gauge fields can constrain the dilaton mass.
We continue our study of spectroscopy data for the SU(3) gauge theory with eight fundamental fermions, motivated by the effective field theory framework of dilaton chiral perturbation theory (dChPT). At leading order dChPT predicts a constant mass anomalous dimension $γ_m$, consistent with the assumed proximity of an infrared fixed point. For the relatively large fermion masses simulated by the LatKMI collaboration, the influence of the infrared fixed point diminishes, and our fits suggest that $γ_m$ starts running. Since a complete higher-order analysis is not feasible with presently availabl…
In a recent letter it has been shown that gauge theory with a dilaton provides linearly increasing gauge potentials from static or uniformly moving pointlike colour sources. This ensures confinement in the framework of no-pair equations. Here I would like to point out that a dilaton coupling both to the gauge curvature term and to fermion masses yields a linear potential with a scalar component and a dominant vector contribution.
We analyze the existence of a dilaton in gauge theories with approximate infrared conformal symmetry. To the extent that these theories are governed in the infrared by an approximate fixed point (walking), the explicit breaking of the conformal symmetry at these scales is vanishingly small. If confinement and spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking set in at some infrared scale, the resultant breaking of the approximate conformal symmetry can lead to the existence of a dilaton with mass parametrically small compared to the confinement scale, and potentially observable at the LHC.
The frequently discussed strongly interacting gauge theory with a fermion flavor doublet in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the SU(3) color gauge group is investigated \cite{Fodor:2012ty}. The chiral condensate and the mass spectrum are consistent with chiral symmetry breaking at vanishing fermion mass. In contrast, sextet fermion mass deformations of spectral properties are not consistent with leading conformal scaling behavior near the critical surface of a conformal theory. A recent paper \cite{DeGrand:2012yq} which could not resolve the conformal fixed point of the gauge…
Motivated by the Kaluza-Klein theory with a large number of extra spacetime dimensions, we present a numerical study of static, spherically symmetric sphaleron solutions coupled to the dilaton fields. We show that sphalerons may have different dilaton cloud configurations, resulting in new massive sphalerons, in general. However, there exist different cloud configurations with different values of the dilaton mass.
Fermion localization in a braneworld model in presence of dilaton coupled higher curvature Gauss-Bonnet bulk gravity is discussed. It is shown that the lowest mode of left handed fermions can be naturally localized on the visible brane due to the dilaton coupled higher curvature term without the necessity of any external localizing bulk field.
We investigate the localization of metastable four-dimensional gravity around a bent dilatonic brane, embedded into a five-dimensional space, that exists only up to distances sufficiently small compared to a crossover scale. Far from such scale, five-dimensional effects strongly deviate the Newtonian potential. We study this effect by considering localization of massive gravity on a non-BPS bent dilatonic 3-brane solution of a five-dimensional supergravity. Our results show that the cosmological constant on the bent brane controls the size of the crossover scale. For sufficiently small positiv…
We study dilaton stabilization in heterotic string models. By utilizing the asymmetric orbifold construction, we construct an explicit three-generation model whose matter content in the visible sector is the supersymmetric standard model with additional vectorlike matter. This model does not contain any geometric moduli fields except the dilaton field. Model building at a symmetry enhancement point in moduli space enlarges the rank of the hidden gauge group. By analyzing multiple hidden gauge sectors, the dilaton field is stabilized by the racetrack mechanism. We also discuss a supersymmetry b…
We propose a general mechanism for stabilizing the dilaton against runaway to weak coupling. The method is based on features of the effective superpotential which arise for supersymmetric gauge theories which are not asymptotically free. Consideration of the 2PI effective action for bilinear operators of matter and gauge superfields allows one to overcome the obstacles to constructing a nonvanishing superpotential.
Meson spectroscopy within the frame of the soft-wall AdS/QCD, became one of the most interesting topics of particle physics in the last six years. In this work we attempt a generalized parametric analysis of the background dilaton gauge field which previous studied by K.M.Keita and Y.H.Dicko. Aim is that using a positive z-depended dilaton gauge field and setting the appropriate parameters on it, we are able to reproduce the full rho vector meson mass spectrum. To reinforce the results, we compare the proposed parametric model with the experimental data. This comparison, returns in some cases …
Some recent work on the implications of a dilaton in 4d gauge theories are revisited. In part I of this paper we see how an effective dilaton coupling to gauge kinetic term provides a simple attractive mechanism to generate confinement. In particular, we put emphasis on the derivation of confining analytical solutions and look into the problem how dilaton degrees of freedom modify Coulom potential and when a confining phase occurs. In part II, we solve the semi-relativistic wave equation, for Dick interquark potential using the Shifted l-expansion technique (SLET) in the heavy quarkonium secto…
We consider dilaton stabilization with R invariance, which insures a vanishing cosmological constant at the scale of stabilization. We construct a few models which accommodate weak gauge couplings with large or small gauge groups. Matter condensation plays a central role in the dilaton stabilization.
Many strongly coupled field theories admit a spectrum of gauge-invariant bound states that includes scalar particles with the same quantum numbers as the vacuum. The challenge naturally arises of how to characterise them. In particular, how can a dilaton---the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with approximate scale invariance---be distinguished from other generic light scalars with the same quantum numbers? We address this problem within the context of gauge-gravity dualities, by analysing the fluctuations of the higher-dimensional gravitational theory. The diagnostic test that we propo…
The dilaton field in string theories (if exists) is expected to have a mass of the order of the gravitino mass $m_{3/2}$ which is in a range of $10^{-2}$keV--1GeV in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking models. If it is the case, the cosmic energy density of coherent dilaton oscillation easily exceeds the critical density of the present universe. We show that even if this problem is solved by a late-time entropy production (thermal inflation) a stringent constraint on the energy density of the dilaton oscillation is derived from experimental upperbounds on the cosmic X($γ$)-ray backgrounds. T…
We study the primordial scalar and tensor perturbations in inflation scenario involving a spectator dilaton field. In our setup, the rolling spectator dilaton causes a tachyonic instability of gauge fields, leading to a copious production of gauge fields in the superhorizon regime, which generates additional scalar and tensor perturbations through gravitational interactions. Our prime concern is the possibility to enhance the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ relative to the standard result, while satisfying the observational constraints. To this end, we allow the dilaton field to be stabilized befor…
We employ the gauge/string duality to study the thermal power terms of various thermodynamic quantities in gauge theories and the renormalized Polyakov loop above the deconfinement phase transition. We restrict ourselves to the five-dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to a single scalar, the dilaton. The asymptotic solutions of the system for a general dilaton potential are employed to study the power contributions of various quantities. If the dilaton is dual to the dimension-4 operator ${\rm Tr} F_{μν}^2$, no power corrections would be generated. Then the thermal quantities approach their a…
We construct a deformed brane solution generated by a double-kink scalar field and a dilaton scalar field. In this brane scenario the extra dimension is finite, which is due to the introduction of the dilaton field with special form. The finity of the extra dimension will result in the localization of the zero mode for the vector fields. While the localization of the Kalb-Ramond fields {depends} on the coupling to the dilaton. For the fermion fields, {with different values of the dilaton-fermion coupling constant}, there are three types of the effective potential for the fermion KK modes. More…
We study inflation driven by a dilaton and an axion, both of which are coupled to a SU(2) gauge field. We find that the inflation driven by the dilaton occurs in the early stage of inflation during which the gauge field grows due to the gauge kinetic function. When the energy density of magnetic fields catches up with that of electric fields, chromo-natural inflation takes over in the late stage of inflation, which we call delayed chromo-natural inflation. Thus, the delayed chromo-natural inflation driven by the axion and the gauge field is induced by the dilaton. The interesting outcome of th…
We briefly discuss the differences between considering the gauge coupling as a constant or as a field, the dilaton, in N=1 supersymmetric theories. We emphasize the differences regarding supersymmetry breaking. Recent developments on the nonperturbative dynamics of these theories provide new ideas on the induced dilaton potential and its stabilization.
We study the 10D equation of motion of dilaton-axion fluctuations in type IIB string compactifications with three-form flux, taking warping into account. Using simplified models with physics comparable to actual compactifications, we argue that the lightest mode localizes in long warped throats and takes a mass of order the warped string scale. Also, Gukov-Vafa-Witten superpotential is valid for the lightest mass mode; however, the mass is similar to the Kaluza-Klein scale, so the dilaton-axion should be integrated out of the effective theory in this long throat regime (leaving a constant supe…
We analyze simple models of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking in the context of supergravity. We distinguish two cases. One is when the messenger of the supersymmetry breaking is a non Abelian gauge force and the other is when the messenger is a pseudoanomalous U(1). We assume that these models originate from string theory and we impose the constraint of the vanishing of the cosmological constant requiring also the stabilization of the dilaton. In the first case, we do not find vacua that are consistent with the constraints of gauge mediation and have a zero tree level cosmological constan…
We analyze the structure of the vacuum and supersymmetry breaking pattern in Fayet-Iliopoulos models with dynamical gauge coupling and planck-scale value of the F-I parameter. We show that in this class of models supersymmetry is generically broken, but the mere presence of the D-term is not sufficient to stop the running away of the modulus responsible for the value of the gauge coupling - the dilaton. To stabilize the dilaton, one has to include an additional dilaton-dependent part in the superpotential. The presence of the large D-term gives rise to the mixed dilaton/D-term dominated scenar…
The non-abelian Einstein-Born-Infeld-Dilaton theory, which rules the dynamics of tensor-scalar gravitation coupled to a $su(2)$-valued gauge field ruled by Born-Infeld lagrangian, is studied in a cosmological framework. The microscopic energy exchange between the gauge field and the dilaton which results from a non-universality of the coupling to gravity modifies the usual behaviour of tensor-scalar theories coupled to matter fluids. General cosmological evolutions are derived for different couplings to gravitation and a comparison to universal coupling is highlighted. Evidences of cosmic acce…
We review and extend recent studies of dilaton effective field theory (dEFT) which provide a framework for the description of the Higgs boson as a composite structure. We first describe the dEFT as applied to lattice data for a class of gauge theories with near-conformal infrared behavior. It includes the dilaton associated with the spontaneous breaking of (approximate) scale invariance, and a set of pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons (pNGBs) associated with the spontaneous breaking of an (approximate) internal global symmetry. The theory contains two small symmetry-breaking parameters. We display …
We construct a composite two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) within the context of dilaton effective field theory. This EFT describes the particle spectrum observed in lattice simulations of a near-conformal $SU(3)$ gauge field theory. A second Higgs doublet is naturally accommodated within the EFT, used previously to construct a one-Higgs-doublet model. We explore the interplay of phenomenological and EFT requirements, supplemented by information from numerical lattice studies of the $SU(3)$ gauge theory with eight fundamental (Dirac) fermions. We build a viable model with moderate parameter tunin…
In a recent paper, we developed and applied a dilaton-based effective field theory (EFT) to the analysis of lattice-simulation data for a class of confining gauge theories with near-conformal infrared behavior. It was employed there at the classical level to the SU(3) gauge theory with eight Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. Here, we explore the structure of the EFT further. We examine its application to lattice data (newly updated) for the SU(3) theory with eight Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation, and the SU(3) theory with two Dirac fermions in the sextet repres…
We study the observational signatures from particle production of a $U(1)$ gauge field kinetically coupled to an inflaton. Regarding the form of gauge kinetic function, we consider the possibility that it becomes stabilized at a certain time, which makes the growing power of the gauge field evolve non-monotonically with a sharp transition. Remarkably, the copious production of the gauge field occurs on super-horizon scales at the late stage of inflation and perturbations are enhanced on the intermediate scales during inflation. We find that it can predict a bumpy shape of the curvature power s…
We consider a coupling of dilaton gravity to the classically scale-invariant B-L extended standard model which has been recently proposed as a phenomenologically viable model realizing the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism of breakdown of the electroweak symmetry. It is shown in the present model that without recourse to the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, the B-L gauge symmetry is broken in the process of spontaneous symmetry breakdown of scale invariance at the tree level and as a result the B-L gauge field becomes massive via the Higgs mechanism. Since the dimensionful parameter is only the Planck mas…
We propose an inflationary scenario based on a many-flavor hidden QCD with eight flavors, which realizes the almost scale-invariant (walking) gauge dynamics. The theory predicts two types of composite (pseudo) Nambu-Goldstone bosons, the pions and the lightest scalar (dilaton) associated with the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and its simultaneous violation of the approximate scale invariance. The dilaton acts as an inflaton, where the inflaton potential is induced by the nonperturbative-scale anomaly linked with the underlying theory. The inflaton potential parameters are highly constra…
Using gauge/gravity duality, we study emission and absorption rates of scalar quanta from far-from-equilibrium N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma. By comparing the emission and absorption rates to expectations from the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem, we study how the spectrum thermalizes and how the thermalization time depends on the four momentum of the emitted quanta.
We propose a model where the role of the electroweak Higgs field is played by the dilaton. The model contains terms which explicitly violate gauge invariance, however it is shown that this violation is fictitious, so that the model is a consistent low energy effective theory. In the simplest version of the idea the resulting low energy effective theory is the same as the top mode standard model.
Within a formulation of a Dynamical AdS/QCD model we calculate the spectrum of light flavored mesons. The background fields of the model correspond to an IR deformed Anti de Sitter metric coupled to a dilaton field. Confinement comes as a consequence of the dilaton dynamics coupled to gravity. Additionally to the Regge-like spectrum of light- scalar, vector and higher spin mesons, we obtain the decay width of scalar mesons into two pions.
We review some of the most recent work on confinement in 4d gauge theories with a massive scalar field (dilaton). Emphasis is put on the derivation of confining analytical solutions to the Coulomb problem versus dilaton effective couplings to gauge terms. It is shown that these effective theories can be relevant to model quark confinement and may shed some light on confinement mechanism. Moreover, the study in the heavy meson sector of an interquark potential derived from Dick Model, proves that phenomenological investigation of this mechanism is more than justified and deserves more efforts.
In recent years, many people have studied the possibility that the anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry is a trigger of SUSY breaking and/or an origin of the fermion mass hierarchy. Though it is interesting that the anomalous U(1) symmetry may explain these two phenomena simultaneously, it causes a negative stop mass squared or a severe fine-tuning in order to avoid the FCNC problem. Recently, it was pointed out that the F-term contribution of the dilaton field can dominate the flavor-dependent contribution from the anomalous U(1) D-term, so that the FCNC problem may be naturally avoided. In this pap…
