Many strongly coupled field theories admit a spectrum of gauge-invariant bound states that includes scalar particles with the same quantum numbers as the vacuum. The challenge naturally arises of how to characterise them. In particular, how can a dilaton---the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with approximate scale invariance---be distinguished from other generic light scalars with the same quantum numbers? We address this problem within the context of gauge-gravity dualities, by analysing the fluctuations of the higher-dimensional gravitational theory. The diagnostic test that we propose consists of comparing the results of the complete calculation, performed by using gauge-invariant fluctuations in the bulk, with the results obtained in the probe approximation. While the former captures the mixing between scalar and metric degrees of freedom, the latter removes by hand the fluctuations that source the dilatation operator of the boundary field-theory. Hence, the probe approximation cannot capture a possible light dilaton, while it should fare well for other scalar particles. We test this idea on a number of holographic models, among which are some of the best known, complete gravity backgrounds constructed within the top-down approach to gauge-gravity dualities. We compute the spectra of scalar and tensor fluctuations, that are interpreted as bound states (glueballs) of the dual field theory, and we highlight those cases in which the probe approximation yields results close to the correct physical ones, as well as those cases where significant discrepancies emerge. We interpret the latter occurrence as an indication that identifying one of the lightest scalar states with the dilaton is legitimate, at least as a leading-order approximation.
Within a holographic framework, we consider vector mesons riding on a gravity-dilaton background. The latter one is determined directly from a Schrödinger equivalent potential which delivers a proper $ρ$ meson Regge trajectory. The mapping on the dilaton potential yields a thermodynamic phase structure with a first-order transition.
We study a realization of light dilatons by considering Conformal Field Theories deformed by a nearly marginal operator ${\cal O}$. This is discussed in the holographic setup consisting of Renormalization Group flows that end on a soft wall. We obtain a mass formula for the dilaton as an average along the flow. Finally we discuss the holographic method to compute the condensate $\langle {\cal O} \rangle$.
A holographic model of probe quarkonia is presented, where the dynamical gravity-dilaton background is adjusted to the thermodynamics of 2 +1 flavor QCD with physical quark masses. The quarkonia action is modified to account for a systematic study of the heavy-quark mass dependence. We focus on the $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ spectral functions and relate our model to heavy quarkonia formation as a special aspect of hadron phenomenology in heavy-ion collisions at LHC.
A holographic model of probe vector mesons (quarkonia) is presented, where the dynamical gravity-dilaton background is adjusted to the thermodynamics of 2 +1 flavor QCD with physical quark masses. The vector meson action is modified to account for various quark masses. We focus on the $Φ$, $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ meson melting in agreement with hadron phenomenology in heavy-ion collisions at LHC, that is the formation of hadrons at the observed freeze-out temperature of 155 MeV.
We derive an explicit form of the dilaton potential in improved holographic QCD (IHQCD) from the experimental data of the $ρ$ meson spectrum. For this purpose we make use of the emergent bulk geometry obtained by deep learning from the hadronic data in arXiv:2005.02636. Requiring that the geometry is a solution of an IHQCD derives the corresponding dilaton potential backwards. This determines the bulk action in a data-driven way, which enables us at the same time to ensure that the deep learning proposal is a consistent gravity. Furthermore, we find that the resulting potential satisfies the r…
We study a set of examples of holographic duals to theories with spontaneous breaking of conformal invariance in different dimensions. The geometries are domain walls interpolating between two AdS spaces, with a non-trivial background scalar field dual to a relevant operator. We comment on a subtlety in the low momentum expansion pointed out in arXiv:1304.3051 for the case of background gravity and revise the dynamical gravity results of arXiv:1207.0006, where the dilaton pole was missing in the scalar-scalar and tensor-tensor two-point functions. We compute the energy-momentum tensor and scal…
We explore higher-derivative terms in the low-energy effective action for the dilaton, the Goldstone boson of spontaneously broken scale invariance. Focusing on the simplest holographic realization of spontaneously broken scale invariance, the Randall-Sundrum (RS) scenario, we identify the nonlinear action for the RS dilaton by integrating out Kaluza-Klein graviton modes. The coefficient of a particular four-derivative dilaton self-interaction can be identified with the Weyl $a$-anomaly of the dual conformal field theory, which we use to verify anomaly matching arguments. We also find novel, $…
The equivalence between the holographic renormalization group and the soft dilaton theorem is shown for a class of wrapped metrics solutions of the string beta function equations for the bosonic string.
Resembling the renormalization group from ultraviolet to infrared, we construct a dynamical holographic model in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework, where the dilaton background field $Φ$ and scalar field $X$ are responsible for the gluodynamics and chiral dynamics, respectively. At the UV boundary, the dilaton field is dual to the dimension-4 gluon operator, and the scalar field is dual to the dimension-3 quark-antiquark operator. The metric structure at IR is automatically deformed by the nonperturbative gluon condensation and chiral condensation in the vacuum. The produced scalar gluebal…
Techni-dilaton, a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of scale symmetry, was predicted long ago in the Scale-invariant/Walking/Conformal Technicolor (SWC-TC) as a remnant of the (approximate) scale symmetry associated with the conformal fixed point, based on the conformal gauge dynamics of ladder Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation with non-running coupling. We study the techni-dilaton as a flavor-singlet bound state of techni-fermions by including the techni-gluon condensate (tGC) effect into the previous (bottom-up) holographic approach to the SWC-TC, a deformation of the holographic QCD with $γ_m \simeq…
We present a dilatonic description of the holographic dark energy by connecting the holographic dark energy density with the dilaton scalar field energy density in a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We show that this model can describe the observed accelerated expansion of our universe with the choice $c\geq1$ and reconstruct the kinetic term as well as the dynamics of the dilaton scalar field.
We analyze a beta function with the analytic form of Novikov-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov result in the five dimensional gravity-dilaton environment. We show how dilaton inherits poles and fixed points of such beta function through the zeros and points of extremum in its potential. Super Yang-Mills and supersymmetric QCD are studied in detail and Seiberg's electric-magnetic duality in the dilaton potential is explicitly demonstrated. Non-supersymmetric proposals of similar functional form are tested and new insights into the conformal window as well as determinations of scheme-independent value…
We propose an holographic $k$-essence and dilaton models of dark energy. The correspondence between the $k$-essence and dilaton energy densities with the holographic density, allows the reconstruction of the potential and the fields for the $k$-essence and dilaton models in flat FRW background. For the proposed infrared cut-off the reconstruction was made for the two cases of the constant $α$: for $α<1$ the model presents phantom crossing and the reconstruction was made in the region before the $ω=-1$ crossing for the EoS parameter. The cosmological dynamics for $α>1$ was also reconstructed. T…
The spectrum of bound states of special strongly coupled confining field theories might include a parametrically light dilaton, associated with the formation of enhanced condensates that break (approximate) scale invariance spontaneously. It has been suggested in the literature that such a state may arise in connection with the theory being close to the unitarity bound in holographic models. We extend these ideas to cases where the background geometry is non-AdS, and the gravity description of the dual confining field theory has a top-down origin in supergravity. We exemplify this programme by…
We critically discuss the possibility that the 125 GeV boson recently discovered at the LHC is the holographic techni-dilaton, a composite state emerging from a strongly-coupled model of electroweak symmetry breaking. This composite state differs from the SM for three main reasons. Its decay constant is in general larger than the electroweak scale, hence suppressing all the couplings to standard model particles with respect to an elementary Higgs boson, with the exception of the coupling to photons and gluons, which is expected to be larger than the standard-model equivalent. We discuss three …
We derive an explicit form of the dilaton potential in improved holographic QCD (IHQCD) from the QCD lattice data of the chiral condensate as a function of the quark mass. This establishes a data-driven holographic modeling of QCD -- machine learning holographic QCD. The modeling consists of two steps for solving inverse problems. The first inverse problem is to find the emergent bulk geometry consistent with the lattice QCD simulation data at the boundary. We solve this problem with the refinement of neural ordinary differential equation, a machine learning technique. The second inverse probl…
We study certain features of a strongly coupled theory whose gravitational dual is given by two-charge dilatonic black hole in AdS5 which has recently been used to study holographic Fermi liquids. By making use of the gravity description, we have studied conductivity, holographic entanglement entropy and dynamics of a charged scalar field. In particular at low energy we find that the temperature dependence of the real part of the conductivity goes as T^3 and the background is stable against scalar condensations.
Stability of dilatonic AdS spaces due to quantum effects of dilaton coupled conformal matter is considered. When such spaces do not exist on classical level, their dynamical generation occurs. Explicit examples corresponding to quantum creation of d4 dilatonic AdS Universe and of d2 dilatonic AdS Black Hole (BH) are presented. Motivated by holographic RG, in the similar approach the complete d5 effective action is discussed. The intermediate region where it is the sum of two parts: bulk (classical gravity) and boundary quantum action is investigated. The effective equations solution representi…
By imposing the relativistic boundary term and Lorentz violating that in the dilatonic black brane with a Lifshitz like IR geometry and $AdS_4$ boundary, we study the properties of the spectral functions of the fermions. We find that in the two fixed points, there are emergent Fermi-surface structures and many properties seem to be in agreement with that of Fermi liquid. Especially, the low energy behavior exhibits a linear dispersion relation. In addition, we also find that a holographic flat band also emerges in this background of the dilatonic black brane.
We develop a dynamical holographic QCD model, which resembles the renormalization group from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR). The dynamical holographic model is constructed in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework with the dilaton background field $Φ$ and scalar field $X$ responsible for the gluodynamics and chiral dynamics, respectively. We summarize our results on hadron spectra, QCD phase transition and transport properties including the jet quenching parameter and the shear/bulk viscosity in the framework of the dynamical holographic QCD model.
Recent progress in the holographic approach makes it more transparent that each conductivity can be decomposed into the coherent contribution due to momentum relaxation and the incoherent contribution due to intrinsic current relaxation. In this paper we investigate this decomposition in the framework of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. We derive the perturbation equations, which are decoupled for a large class of background solutions, and then obtain the analytic results of conductivity with the slow momentum relaxation in low frequency approximation, which is consistent with the known result…
We discuss the role of the dilaton tadpole in the holographic description of non-supersymmetric gauge theories that are conformal in the planar limit. On the string theory side, the presence of the dilaton tadpole modifies the AdS background inducing a logarithmic running for the radius and the dilaton. Using the holographic prescription we compute the Wilson loop on the gravity side and find a smooth interpolating potential between asymptotic freedom and confinement, as expected from field theory.
We investigate the vacuum instability in the presence of dilaton field in a holographic set up. Although the dilaton is a bulk field, it leads to the vacuum instability on the boundary. We show that the whole process crucially depends on the probe brane position and as well on the radial coordinate. So that the effects of dilaton scale parameter in different regions of the bulk or for different probe brane positions are different. We also observe that in our study the temperature can strengthen the effect of scale parameter in reducing the potential barrier. Finally, we show that this Schwinge…
We consider a very general dilaton-axion system coupled to Einstein-Hilbert gravity in arbitrary dimension and we carry out holographic renormalization for any dimension up to and including five dimensions. This is achieved by developing a new systematic algorithm for iteratively solving the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation in a derivative expansion. The boundary term derived is valid not only for asymptotically AdS backgrounds, but also for more general asymptotics, including non-conformal branes and Improved Holographic QCD. In the second half of the paper, we apply the general result to Impr…
Motivated by the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence, we investigate the holographic dual of the extremal and non-extremal rotating linear dilaton black hole in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion Gravity. For the case of extremal black hole, by imposing the appropriate boundary condition at spatial infinity of the near horizon extremal geometry, the Virasoro algebra of conserved charges associated with the asymptotic symmetry group is obtained. It is shown that the microscopic entropy of the dual conformal field given by Cardy formula exactly agrees with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of extrema…
In this paper we consider the holographic DC and Hall conductivity in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with momentum dissipation. We analytically derived the DC conductivity and Hall conductivity from the black horizon data, and found that the conductivities are independent on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We also used the entropy function formalism to get the conductivities in terms of the charge of the black hole, even without knowing the explicit black hole solutions.
We investigate the holographic DC and Hall conductivity in massive Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) gravity. Two special EMD backgrounds are considered explicitly. One is dyonic Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m-AdS (RN-AdS) geometry and the other one is hyperscaling violation AdS (HV-AdS) geometry. We find that the linear-T resistivity and quadratic-T inverse Hall angle can be simultaneously achieved in HV-AdS models, providing a hint to construct holographic models confronting with the experimental data of strange metal in future.
We present a five-dimensional anisotropic holographic model for light quarks supported by Einstein-dilaton-two-Maxwell action. This model generalizing isotropic holographic model with light quarks is characterized by a Van der Waals-like phase transition between small and large black holes. We compare the location of the phase transition for Wilson loops with the positions of the phase transition related to the background instability and describe the QCD phase diagram in the thermodynamic plane -- temperature $T$ and chemical potential $μ$. The Cornell potential behavior in this anisotropic mo…
We introduce the 5-dimension dynamical holographic QCD model, which is constructed in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework with the dilaton background field $Φ$ and the scalar field $X$ responsible for the gluodynamics and chiral dynamics, respectively. We review our results on the hadron spectra including the glueball and light meson spectra, QCD phase transitions and transport properties in the framework of the dynamical holographic QCD model.
In this note, we study the dipole coupling effect of holographic fermion in a charged dilatonic black hole proposed by Gubser and Rocha (arXiv:0911.2898). It is found that the property of Fermi liquid is rigid under perturbation of dipole coupling, and the Fermi momentum is linearly shifted. A gap is dynamically generated as the coupling becomes large enough and the Fermi surface ceases to exist as the bulk dipole coupling further increases.
We consider the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system with an arbitrary kinetic gauge function and a dilaton potential. A family of analytic solutions is obtained by the potential reconstruction method. We then study its holographic dual QCD model. The kinetic gauge function can be fixed by requesting the linear Regge spectrum of mesons. We calculate the free energy to obtain the phase diagram of the holographic QCD model.
We report a dynamical formation of a (Mott) gap from holographic fermions. By coupling a fermion field with dipole action to the charged dilaton black branes with a Lifshitz like IR geometry and $AdS_{4}$ boundary, we find that when the dipole interaction is large enough, spectral weight is transferred between bands, and beyond a critical dipole interaction, a gap emerges in the fermion density of states. The value of the gap becomes larger as the strength of the interaction keeps increasing.
In this paper, we first study the Lifshitz-dilaton holographic superconductors with nonlinear Born-Infeld (BI) gauge field and obtain the critical temperature of the system for different values of Lifshitz dynamical exponent, $z$, and nonlinear parameter $b$. We find that for fixed value of $b$, the critical temperature decreases with increasing $z$. This indicates that the increase of anisotropy between space and time prevents the phase transition. Also, for fixed value of $z$, the critical temperature decrease with increasing $b$. Then, we investigate the optical properties of ($2+1$) and ($…
Supplementing the holographic Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton model of [O. DeWolfe, S.S. Gubser, C. Rosen, Phys. Rev. D83 (2011) 086005; O. DeWolfe, S.S. Gubser, C. Rosen, Phys. Rev. D84 (2011) 126014] by input of lattice QCD data for 2+1 flavors and physical quark masses for the equation of state and quark number susceptibility at zero baryo-chemical potential we explore the resulting phase diagram over the temperature-chemical potential plane. A first-order phase transition sets in at a temperature of about 112 MeV and a baryo-chemical potential of 612 MeV. We estimate the accuracy of the critical …
We find a one to one mapping between low energy string dilaton states in AdS bulk and high energy glueball states on the corresponding boundary. This holographic mapping leads to a relation between bulk and boundary scattering amplitudes. From this relation and the dilaton action we find the appropriate momentum scaling for high energy QCD amplitudes at fixed angles.

In this paper, we investigate the action growth in various backgrounds in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory. We calculate the full time evolution of action growth in AdS dilaton black hole and find it approaches the late time bound from above. We investigate the black hole which is asymptotically Lifshitz and obtain its late-time and full time behavior. We find the violation of Lloyd bound in late time limit and show the full time behavior exhibiting some new features for z sufficiently large.
In this work, we offer a dynamical soft-wall model to describe the gluodynamics and chiral dynamics in one systematical framework. We firstly construct a quenched dynamical holographic QCD (hQCD) model in the graviton-dilaton framework for the pure gluon system, then develop a dynamical hQCD model for the two flavor system in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework by adding light flavors on the gluodynamical background. For two forms of dilaton background field $Φ=μ_G^2z^2$ and $Φ=μ_G^2z^2\tanh(μ_{G^2}^4z^2/μ_G^2)$, the quadratic correction to dilaton background field at infrared encodes import…
We consider a holographic description of the chiral symmetry breaking in an external magnetic field in $ (2+1) $-dimensional gauge theories from the softwall model using an improved dilaton field profile given by $Φ(z) = - kz^2 + (k+k_1)z^2\tanh (k_{2}z^2)$. We find inverse magnetic catalysis for $B<B_c$ and magnetic catalysis for $B>B_c$, where $B_c$ is the pseudocritical magnetic field. The transition between these two regimes is a crossover and occurs at $B=B_c$, which depends on the fermion mass and temperature. We also find spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking (the chiral condensate $σ\no…
We present an holographic approach to strongly-coupled theories close to the conformal to non-conformal transition, trying to understand the presence of light scalars as recent lattice simulations seem to suggest. We find that the dilaton is always the lightest resonance, although not parametrically lighter than the others. We provide a simple analytic formula for the dilaton mass that allows us to understand this behavior. The pattern of the meson mass spectrum, as we get close to the conformal transition, is found to be quite similar to that in lattice simulations. We provide further predict…

We re-investigate the holographic superconductor in hyperscaling violation geometry by considering the coupling between the probed Maxwell field and the background dilaton. We find that the phenomenon of superconductivity still exists, but with properties affected by such a coupling. The critical temperature decreases as the hyperscaling violation exponent is increased. The influence of the dynamical exponent on the critical temperature becomes complicated which depends on the mass of the probed scalar field and the hyperscaling violation exponent. The results of the frequency gap show a large…
We study holographic thermalization in spacetimes with a chemical potential and a non-trivial dilaton field. Three non-local observables are used to probe the whole process and investigate the effect of the ratio of the chemical potential over temperature $χ$ and the dilaton-Maxwell coupling constant $α$. It is found that the saturation time is not always a monotonically increasing function of $χ$, the situation depends on $α$. When $0 \leqα\leq 1$, larger $χ$ yields longer saturation time, while for $α>1$, the situation becomes more complex. More interesting, we found that although $α$ indeed…
The holographic complexity conjectures are considered in a Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravity, by using the "Complexity-Volume" proposal. Specifically, we calculate the growth rate of complexity for an eternal charged AdS-dilaton black holes with fixed and dynamical boundaries respectively. The dynamical boundary is achieved by introducing a moving self-graviting brane on which the induced metric has an exact FLRW form. In case of fixed AdS boundary, there exists a bound for evolution of growth rate on late time, while this bound will become larger as the dilaton coupling constant $α$ increases.…
According to the gauge/gravity duality, the Van der Waals transition of charged AdS black holes in extended phase space is conjectured to be dual to a renormalization group flow on the space of field theories. So exploring the Van der Waals transition is potentially valuable for studying holographic properties of charged black hole thermodynamics. There are different transition behaviors for charged dilatonic AdS black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMD) theory with string-inspired potential with different dilaton coupling constants in diverse dimensions. In this work, we find a special cl…
We refine an earlier introduced 5-dimensional gravity solution capable of holographically capturing several qualitative aspects of (lattice) QCD in a strong magnetic background such as the anisotropic behaviour of the string tension, inverse catalysis at the level of the deconfinement transition or sensitivity of the entanglement entropy to the latter. Here, we consistently modify our solution of the considered Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system to not only overcome an unphysical flattening at large distances in the quark-antiquark potential plaguing earlier work, but also to encapsulate inverse …
We calculate the free energy to obtain the phase diagram of the holographic QCD model and interpret our result as the heavy quarks system by comparing the recent lattice QCD simulation. We finally obtain the equations of state in our model.
A variational principle is constructed for gravity coupled to an asymptotically linear dilaton and a p-form field strength. This requires the introduction of appropriate surface terms -- also known as `boundary counterterms' -- in the action. The variation of the action with respect to the boundary metric yields a boundary stress tensor, which is used to construct conserved charges that generate the asymptotic symmetries of the theory. In most cases a minimal set of assumptions leads to a unique set of counterterms. However, for certain examples we find families of actions that depend on one o…
We study glueballs in the holographic gauge theories, supersymmetric and non-super symmetric cases, which are given by the type IIB superstring solutions with non-trivial dilaton. In both cases, the dilaton reflects the condensate of the gauge field strength, $<F^2>$, which is responsible to the linear confining potential between the quark and anti-quark. Then we could see the meson spectra. On the other hand, the glueball spectra are not found in the supersymmetric case. We need a sharp wall, which corresponds to an infrared cutoff, in order to obtain the glueballs. In the non-supersymmetric …
We investigate holographic models of superfluids and superconductors in which the gravitational theory includes a dilatonic field. Dilaton extensions are interesting as they allow us to obtain a better description of low temperature condensed matter systems. We focus on asymptotically AdS black hole configurations, which are dual to field theories with conformal ultraviolet behavior. A nonvanishing value of the dilaton breaks scale invariance in the infrared and is therefore compatible with the normal phase being insulating (or a solid in the fluid mechanical interpretation); indeed we find th…
