A genuine dilaton $σ$ allows scales to exist even in the limit of exact conformal invariance. In gauge theories, these may occur at an infrared fixed point (IRFP) $α_{\text{IR}}$ through dimensional transmutation. These large scales at $α_{\text{IR}}$ can be separated from small scales produced by $θ^μ_μ$, the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. For quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the conformal limit can be combined with chiral $SU(3) \times SU(3)$ symmetry to produce chiral-scale perturbation theory $χ$PT$_σ$, with $f_0(500)$ as the dilaton. The technicolor (TC) analogue of this is crawling TC: at low energies, the gauge coupling $α$ goes directly to (but does not walk past) $α_{\text{IR}}$, and the massless dilaton at $α_{\text{IR}}$ corresponds to a light Higgs boson at $α\lesssim α_{\text{IR}}$. It is suggested that the $W^\pm$ and $Z^0$ bosons set the scale of the Higgs boson mass. Unlike crawling TC, in walking TC, $θ^μ_μ$ produces $all$ scales, large and small, so it is hard to argue that its ``dilatonic'' candidate for the Higgs boson is not heavy.
The crucial problem of how the dilaton field is stabilized at a phenomenologically acceptable value in string theories remains essentially unsolved. We show that the usual scenario of assuming that the dilaton is fixed by the (SUSY breaking) dynamics of just the dilaton itself (dilaton dominance scenario) is {\em inconsistent} unless the Kähler potential receives very important perturbative or non-perturbative contributions. Then, the usual predictions about soft breaking terms are lost, but still is possible to derive model-independent predictions for them.
We analyze the existence of a dilaton in gauge theories with approximate infrared conformal symmetry. To the extent that these theories are governed in the infrared by an approximate fixed point (walking), the explicit breaking of the conformal symmetry at these scales is vanishingly small. If confinement and spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking set in at some infrared scale, the resultant breaking of the approximate conformal symmetry can lead to the existence of a dilaton with mass parametrically small compared to the confinement scale, and potentially observable at the LHC.
We study dynamical self-localization of gauge theories in higher dimensions. Specifically, we consider a 5D $U(1)$ gauge theory in the linear dilaton (clockwork) background, with anisotropic gauge couplings along the transverse (fifth) direction and the longitudinal (four-dimensional) directions. By using lattice techniques, we calculate the space plaquettes and the helicity moduli and we determine the phase diagram of the model. We find strong evidence that the model exhibits a new phase, a layer phase, where the four-dimensional physics decouples from the five-dimensional dynamics. The layer…
We briefly discuss the differences between considering the gauge coupling as a constant or as a field, the dilaton, in N=1 supersymmetric theories. We emphasize the differences regarding supersymmetry breaking. Recent developments on the nonperturbative dynamics of these theories provide new ideas on the induced dilaton potential and its stabilization.
The dilaton field in string theories (if exists) is expected to have a mass of the order of the gravitino mass $m_{3/2}$ which is in a range of $10^{-2}$keV--1GeV in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking models. If it is the case, the cosmic energy density of coherent dilaton oscillation easily exceeds the critical density of the present universe. We show that even if this problem is solved by a late-time entropy production (thermal inflation) a stringent constraint on the energy density of the dilaton oscillation is derived from experimental upperbounds on the cosmic X($γ$)-ray backgrounds. T…
We consider scenarios where strong conformal dynamics constitutes the ultraviolet completion of the physics that drives electroweak symmetry breaking. We show that in theories where the operator responsible for the breaking of conformal symmetry is close to marginal at the breaking scale, the dilaton mass can naturally lie below the scale of the strong dynamics. However, in general this condition is not satisfied in the scenarios of interest for electroweak symmetry breaking, and so the presence of a light dilaton in these theories is associated with mild tuning. We construct the effective the…
We develop a theoretical framework to study slowly rotating compact stars in a rather general class of alternative theories of gravity, with the ultimate goal of investigating constraints on alternative theories from electromagnetic and gravitational-wave observations of compact stars. Our Lagrangian includes as special cases scalar-tensor theories (and indirectly f(R) theories) as well as models with a scalar field coupled to quadratic curvature invariants. As a first application of the formalism, we discuss (for the first time in the literature) compact stars in Einstein-Dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet…
We study the soft behavior of two seemingly different particles that are both referred to as dilatons in the literature, namely the one that appears in theories of gravity and in string theory and the Nambu-Goldstone boson of spontaneously broken conformal invariance. Our primary result is the discovery of a soft theorem at subsubleading order for each dilaton, which in both cases contains the operator of special conformal transformations. Interesting similarities as well as differences between the dilaton soft theorems are discussed.
The possibility of evading Lovelock's theorem at $d=4$, via a singular redefinition of the dimensionless coupling of the Gauss-Bonnet term, has been extensively discussed in the cosmological context. The term is added as a quadratic contribution of the curvature tensor to the Einstein-Hilbert action, originating theories of "Einstein Gauss-Bonnet" (EGB) type. These studies are interlaced with those of the conformal anomaly effective action. We review some basic results concerning the structure of these actions, their conformal constraints around flat space and their relation to EGB theories. T…
I discuss several issues concerning the use of string models as unified theories of all interactions. After a short review of gauge coupling unification in the string context, I discuss possible motivations for the construction of $SU(5)$ and $SO(10)$ String-GUTs. I describe the construction of such String-GUTs using different orbifold techniques and emphasize those properties which could be general. Although $SO(10)$ and $SU(5)$ String-GUTs are relatively easy to build, the spectrum bellow the GUT scale is in general bigger than that of the MSSM and includes colour octets and $SU(2)$ triplets…
We study gaugino condensation in the context of superstring effective theories using the linear multiplet formulation for the dilaton superfield. Including nonperturbative corrections to the Kähler potential for the dilaton may naturally achieve dilaton stabilization, with supersymmetry breaking and gaugino condensation; these three issues are interrelated in a very simple way. In a toy model with a single static condensate, a dilaton $vev$ is found within a phenomenologically interesting range. The effective theory differs significantly from condensate models studied previously in the chiral …
We discuss the signature of the anomalous breaking of the superconformal symmetry in $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang Mills theory, mediated by the Ferrara-Zumino hypercurrent ($\mathcal{J}$) with two vector ($\mathcal V$) supercurrents $(\mathcal{JVV})$ and its manifestation in the anomaly action, in the form of anomaly poles. This allows to investigate in a unified way both conformal and chiral anomalies. The analysis is performed in parallel to the Standard Model, for comparison. We investigate, in particular, massive deformations of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ theory and the spectral densities of the an…
We study a realization of light dilatons by considering Conformal Field Theories deformed by a nearly marginal operator ${\cal O}$. This is discussed in the holographic setup consisting of Renormalization Group flows that end on a soft wall. We obtain a mass formula for the dilaton as an average along the flow. Finally we discuss the holographic method to compute the condensate $\langle {\cal O} \rangle$.
We propose a general mechanism for stabilizing the dilaton against runaway to weak coupling. The method is based on features of the effective superpotential which arise for supersymmetric gauge theories which are not asymptotically free. Consideration of the 2PI effective action for bilinear operators of matter and gauge superfields allows one to overcome the obstacles to constructing a nonvanishing superpotential.
The converging mechanism discussed in [Damour & Nordtvedt, Physical Review Letters,70,15] for scalar-tensor theories has been applied to dilaton-like theories in several subsequent papers. In the present communication, we show that an unfortunate assumption in those studies led to a scalar-field equation unsuitable for the study of the dilaton field. The corrected scalar-field equation turns to change the numerical outcome of those studies in general, but even sometimes their qualitative aftermath. Therefore, the present result call for new investigations of the subject. On the other hand, our…
We study nonsingular cosmological scenarios in a general $D$-dimensional string effective action of the dilaton-modulus-axion system in the presence of the matter source. In the standard dilatonic Brans-Dicke parameter ($ω=-1$) with radiation, we analytically obtain singularity-free bouncing solutions where the universe starts out in a state with a finite curvature and evolves toward the weakly coupled regime. We apply this analytic method to the string-gas cosmology including the massive state in addition to the leading massless state (radiation), with and without the axion. We numerically fi…
We study the general class of gravitational field theories constructed on the basis of scale invariance (and therefore absence of any mass parameters) and invariance under transverse diffeomorphisms (TDiff), which are the 4-volume conserving coordinate transformations. We show that these theories are equivalent to a specific type of scalar-tensor theories of gravity (invariant under all diffeomorphisms) with a number of properties, making them phenomenologically interesting. They contain, in addition to the dimensionless coupling constants of the original theory, an arbitrary dimensionful para…
Some recent work on the implications of a dilaton in 4d gauge theories are revisited. In part I of this paper we see how an effective dilaton coupling to gauge kinetic term provides a simple attractive mechanism to generate confinement. In particular, we put emphasis on the derivation of confining analytical solutions and look into the problem how dilaton degrees of freedom modify Coulom potential and when a confining phase occurs. In part II, we solve the semi-relativistic wave equation, for Dick interquark potential using the Shifted l-expansion technique (SLET) in the heavy quarkonium secto…
We consider the possibility that the new particle that has been observed at 125 GeV is not the Standard Model (SM) Higgs, but instead the dilaton associated with an approximate conformal symmetry that has been spontaneously broken. We focus on dilatons that arise from theories of technicolor, or from theories of the Higgs as a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB), that involve strong conformal dynamics in the ultraviolet. In the pNGB case, we are considering a framework where the Higgs particle is significantly heavier than the dilaton and has therefore not yet been observed. In each of the tec…
We review some of the most recent work on confinement in 4d gauge theories with a massive scalar field (dilaton). Emphasis is put on the derivation of confining analytical solutions to the Coulomb problem versus dilaton effective couplings to gauge terms. It is shown that these effective theories can be relevant to model quark confinement and may shed some light on confinement mechanism. Moreover, the study in the heavy meson sector of an interquark potential derived from Dick Model, proves that phenomenological investigation of this mechanism is more than justified and deserves more efforts.
We study the experimental constraints on theories, where the equivalence principle is violated by dilaton-exchange contributions to the usual graviton-exchange gravity. We point out that in this case it is not possible to have any CPT violation and hence there is no constraint from the CPT violating measurements in the $K-$system. The most stringent bound is obtained from the $K_L - K_S$ mass difference. In contrast, neither neutrino oscillation experiments nor neutrinoless double beta decay imply significant constraints.
