Giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSB) with radii of discs as large as 130 kpc challenge galaxy formation scenarios and it is still not well understood how they form and evolve through the cosmic time. Here we present analysis of deep long-slit spectroscopic observations of six gLSBs that we obtained with the Russian 6-m telescope: UGC 1922, Malin 2, UGC 6614, UGC1382, NGC 7589 and UGC 1378. We derived spatially resolved properties of stellar and ionized gas kinematics and characteristics of stellar populations and interstellar medium. The stars in the central regions are old and metal rich for most of the galaxies. We revealed the presence of a kinematically decoupled central component in the inner regions of UGC1922, UGC1382 and UGC6614, where we detected counter-rotating kinematical components. We combine the results of our observations with the results available in literature. There seems to be a need for diversity of gLSBs formation scenarios: (i) some of them could have formed by in-plane mergers of massive galaxies; (ii) for some others the major merger scenario is excluded by our data. We revealed that most of gLSBs are situated in low-density environment which possibly helped to preserve the giant discs. At the same time at some point of the formation history of these systems there should exist a reservoir of gas from which the massive discs were formed. Future observations and detailed comparison with numerical simulations of galaxy formation in the cosmological contest will help to clarify which gLSB formation channel is more important.
We present long-slit optical spectra of 12 edge-on low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) positioned along their major axes. After performing reddening corrections for the emission-line fluxes measured from the extracted integrated spectra, we measured the gas-phase metallicities of our LSBG sample using both the [NII]/Ha and the R_23 diagnostics. Both sets of oxygen abundances show good agreement with each other, giving a median value of 12 + log(O/H) = 8.26 dex. In the luminosity-metallicity plot, our LSBG sample is consistent with the behavior of normal galaxies. In the mass-metallicity di…
Characterizing the evolution of the faint end of the cluster red sequence (RS) galaxy luminosity function (GLF) with redshift is a milestone in understanding galaxy evolution. However, the community is still divided in that respect, hesitating between an enrichment of the RS due to efficient quenching of blue galaxies from $z\sim1$ to present-day or a scenario in which the RS is built at a higher redshift and does not evolve afterwards. Recently, it has been proposed that surface brightness (SB) selection effects could possibly solve the literature disagreement, accounting for the diminishing …
General structural properties and low surface brightness tidal features hold important clues to the formation of galaxies. In this paper, we study a sample of polar-ring galaxies (PRGs) based on optical imaging from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe82 and other deep surveys. We investigate the deepest images of candidates for PRGs to date. We carry out photometric decomposition on the host galaxies and associated polar structures that allows us to derive the structural properties of both components. We are able to detect very faint tidal structures around most PRGs in our sample. For …
We report the discovery of 158 previously undetected dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster central regions using a deep coadded $u, g$ and $i$-band image obtained with the DECam wide-field camera mounted on the 4-meter Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory as part of the {\it Next Generation Fornax Survey} (NGFS). The new dwarf galaxies have quasi-exponential light profiles, effective radii $0.1\!<\!r_e\!<\!2.8$ kpc and average effective surface brightness values $22.0\!<\!μ_i\!<\!28.0$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$. We confirm the existence of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the …
Context. The ZOA does not allow clear optical observations of extragalactic sources behind the Milky Way due to the meaningful extinction of the optical emission of these objects. The observations in NIR wavelengths represent a potential source of astronomical discoveries supporting the detection of new galaxies, completing the picture of the large scale structure in this still little explored area of the sky. Aims. Our aim is to decipher the nature of the overdensity located behind the Milky Way, in the tile b204 of the VVV survey. Methods. We studied an area of six arcmin around a galaxy con…
We report the identification of the unusual emission-line stellar-like object in the nearby low-metallicity (Z ~ 0.1Zsun) dwarf galaxy NGC 4068. Our observations performed with long-slit spectrograph and Fabry-Perot interferometer demonstrate high velocity dispersion in Ha line, presence of HeII4686A line and peculiarly low [SII]/[NII] fluxes ratio for this object. From observational data, we derived that the object represents a single star of high bolometric luminosity L~1.5*10^6 Lsun surrounded by an expanding nebula with kinematical age of t ~ 0.5Myr. The nebula exhibits significant nitroge…
Extreme emission-line galaxies, such as blue compact dwarfs (BCDs), Green Peas (GPs) and blueberries in the local Universe are the potential candidates to understand the nature of galaxies that re-ionized the early Universe. Being low-mass, metal-poor starburst systems they are understood as local analogs of the high redshift Lyman Continuum (LyC) and Lyman-$α$ emitters (LAEs). Even with their proximity to us, we know little about their spatially resolved properties, most of the blueberries and GPs are indeed compact, remain unresolved. Here, we report the detection of a disk-like lower-surfac…
While most galaxies appear to host a central supermassive black hole (SMBH), they are expected to also contain a substantial population of off-center "wandering" SMBHs naturally produced by the hierarchical merger-driven process of galaxy assembly. This population has been recently characterized in an analysis of the Romulus cosmological simulations, which correct for the dynamical forces on SMBHs without artificially pinning them to halo centers. Here we predict an array of electromagnetic signatures for these wanderers. The predicted wandering population of SMBHs from Romulus broadly reprodu…
We examine the spatial extent of the narrow-line regions (NLRs) of a sample of 30 luminous obscured quasars at $0.4 < z < 0.7$ observed with spatially resolved Gemini-N GMOS long-slit spectroscopy. Using the [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emission feature, we estimate the size of the NLR using a cosmology-independent measurement: the radius where the surface brightness falls to 10$^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$. We then explore the effects of atmospheric seeing on NLR size measurements and conclude that direct measurements of the NLR size from observed profiles are too large by 0.1 - 0.2 de…
Giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSBGs) with dynamically cold stellar discs reaching the radius of 130 kpc challenge currently considered galaxy formation mechanisms. We analyse new deep long-slit optical spectroscopic observations, archival optical images and published HI and optical spectroscopic data for a sample of seven gLSBGs, for which we performed mass modelling and estimated the parameters of dark matter haloes assuming the Burkert dark matter density profile. Our sample is not homogeneous by morphology, parameters of stellar populations and total mass, however, six of seven ga…
HH 223 is a knotty, wiggling nebular emission of ~30" length found in the L723 star-forming region. It lies projected onto the largest blueshifted lobe of the cuadrupolar CO outflow powered by a low-mass YSO system embedded in the core of L723. We analysed the physical conditions and kinematics along HH 223 with the aim of disentangling whether the emission arises from shock-excited, supersonic gas characteristic of a stellar jet, or is only tracing the wall cavity excavated by the CO outflow. We performed long-slit optical spectroscopy along HH 223, crossing all the bright knots (A to E) and …
The aim of this work is to explore the potential of Surface Brightness Fluctuations (SBF) for studying composite stellar populations (CSP). To do so, we have computed the standard (mean) and SBF spectra with E-MILES stellar population synthesis code. We have created a set of models composed by different mass fractions of two single stellar populations (SSP), as a first approximation of a CSP scenario. With these models we present an ensemble of SBF colour-colour diagnostic diagrams that reveal different secondary populations depending on the bands used. For this work we focus on those colours …
Abell 1351 is a massive merging cluster that hosts a giant radio halo and a bright radio edge blended in the halo. In this paper, we present the first ever spectral analysis of this cluster using GMRT 610 MHz and VLA 1.4 GHz archival data and discuss the radio edge property. Using \textit{Chandra} data, we report the first tentative detection of shock front at the location of the edge in A1351 with discontinuities in both X-ray surface brightness and temperature. Our analysis strengthens the previous claim of the detected "edge" being a high luminosity radio relic. The radio relic has an integ…
Giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSBGs) with the disk radii of up to 130 kpc represent a challenge for currently accepted theories of galaxy formation and evolution, because it is difficult to build-up such large dynamically cold systems via mergers preserving extended disks. We summarize the in-depth study of the sample of 7 gLSBGs based on the results of the performed spectral long-slit observations at the Russian 6-m BTA telescope of SAO RAS, surface photometry and HI data available in literature. Our study revealed that most gLSBGs do not deviate from the Tully-Fisher relation. We d…
Subaru High-$z$ Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs). XXIII. The powering mechanisms of the Ly$α$ haloes around high-$z$ quasars probed by slit spectroscopy
We studied the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC4656 and its dwarf low surface brightness companion with the enhanced UV brightness, NGC4656UV, belonging to the interacting system NGC4631/56. Regular photometric structure and relatively big size of NGC4656UV allows to consider this dwarf galaxy as a separate group member rather than a tidal dwarf. Spectral long-slit observations were used to obtain the kinematical parameters and gas-phase metallicity of NGC4656UV and NGC4656. Our rough estimate of the total dynamical mass of NGC4656UV allowed us to conclude that this galaxy is the dark-matter dominate…
The epoch of reionization (6 < z < 10) marks the period in our universe when the first large galaxies grew to fruition, and began to affect the universe around them. Massive stars, and potentially accreting supermassive black holes, filled the universe with ionizing radiation, burning off the haze of neutral gas that had filled the intergalactic medium (IGM) since recombination (z~1000). The evolution of this process constrains key properties of these earliest luminous sources, thus observationally constraining reionization is a key science goal for the next decade. The measurement of Lyman-al…
We present a ~ 1" (100 pc) resolution 12CO (3-2) map of the nearby intermediate stage interacting galaxy pair NGC 4038/9 (the Antennae galaxies) obtained with the Submillimeter Array. We find that half the CO (3-2) emission originates in the overlap region where most of the tidally induced star formation had been previously found in shorter wavelength images, with the rest being centered on each of the nuclei. The gross distribution is consistent with lower resolution single dish images, but we show for the first time the detailed distribution of the warm and dense molecular gas across this ga…
Asymmetries in HI in galaxies are often caused by the interaction with close companions, making isolated galaxies an ideal framework to study secular evolution. The AMIGA project has demonstrated that isolated galaxies show the lowest level of asymmetry in their HI integrated profiles, yet some present significant asymmetries. CIG 96 (NGC 864) is a representative case reaching a 16% level. Our aim is to investigate the HI asymmetries of this spiral galaxy and what processes have triggered the star-forming regions observed in the XUV pseudoring. We performed deep optical observations at CAHA 1.…

UGC 12281 has been classified as having a pure disk and being a low surface brightness galaxy (LSBG), thus being an obvious member of the so-called superthin galaxies. At the same time it represents an extremely untypical type of LSBG due to its remarkable amount of current star formation and evidence for extraplanar ionized gas. This makes it become a perfect tool to investigate the triggering of star formation in LSB galaxies, located in an alleged isolated area. By means of deep photometry and long-slit spectroscopy we analyse the H$α$ halo and verify the existence of a potential dwarf comp…

We present the discovery of a giant tidal tail of stars associated with F8D1, the closest known example of an ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG). F8D1 sits in a region of the sky heavily contaminated by Galactic cirrus and has been poorly studied since its discovery two decades ago. The tidal feature was revealed in a deep map of resolved red giant branch stars constructed using data from our Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey of the M81 Group. It has an average surface brightness of $μ_g \sim 32$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and can be traced for over a degree on the sky (60 kpc at the distance of F8D1) with our c…
The Hubble Ultra Deep field (HUDF) is the deepest region ever observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. With the main objective of unveiling the nature of galaxies up to $z \sim 7-8$, the observing and reduction strategy have focused on the properties of small and unresolved objects, rather than the outskirts of the largest objects, which are usually over-subtracted. We aim to create a new set of WFC3/IR mosaics of the HUDF using novel techniques to preserve the properties of the low surface brightness regions. We created ABYSS: a pipeline that optimises the estimate and modelling of low-level…
Galaxies are complex systems made up of different structural components such as bulges, discs, and bars. Understanding galaxy evolution requires unveiling, independently, their history of stellar mass and metallicity assembly. We introduce C2D, a new algorithm to perform spectro-photometric multi-component decompositions of integral field spectroscopy (IFS) datacubes. The galaxy surface-brightness distribution at each wavelength (quasi-monochromatic image) is fitted using GASP2D, a 2D photometric decomposition code. As a result, C2D provides both a characteristic one-dimensional spectra and a …
Tadpole Galaxies look like a star forming head with a tail structure to the side. They are also named cometaries. In a series of recent works we have discovered a number of issues that lead us to consider them extremely interesting targets. First, from images, they are disks with a lopsided starburst. This result is firmly established with long slit spectroscopy in a nearby representative sample. They rotate with the head following the rotation pattern but displaced from the rotation center. Moreover, in a search for extremely metal poor (XMP) galaxies, we identified tadpoles as the dominant s…

Interacting galaxies surrounded by HI tidal debris are ideal sites for the study of young clusters and tidal galaxy formation. The process that triggers star formation in the low-density environments outside galaxies is still an open question. New clusters and galaxies of tidal origin are expected to have high metallicities for their luminosities. Spectroscopy of such objects is, however, at the limit of what can be done with existing 8-10m class telescopes, which has prevented statistical studies of these objects. NGC2865 is an UV-bright merging elliptical galaxy with shells and extended HI t…
We performed long-slit optical spectroscopy (GTC-OSIRIS) of 6 radio-loud QSOs at redshifts $2<z<3$, known to have giant ($\sim 50$-100 kpc) Lyman-$α$ emitting nebulae, and detect extended Lyman-$α$ emission for 4, with surface brightness $\sim10^{-16}$ ergs $\rm cm^{-2}s^{-1}arcsec^{-2}$ and line width FWHM 400-1100 (mean 863) km $\rm s^{-1}$. We also observed the $z\simeq 5.9$ radio-loud QSO, SDSS J2228+0110, and find evidence of a $\geq 10$ kpc extended Lyman-$α$ emission nebula, a new discovery for this high-redshift object. Spatially-resolved kinematics of the 5 nebulae are examined by fit…
