Galaxies are complex systems made up of different structural components such as bulges, discs, and bars. Understanding galaxy evolution requires unveiling, independently, their history of stellar mass and metallicity assembly. We introduce C2D, a new algorithm to perform spectro-photometric multi-component decompositions of integral field spectroscopy (IFS) datacubes. The galaxy surface-brightness distribution at each wavelength (quasi-monochromatic image) is fitted using GASP2D, a 2D photometric decomposition code. As a result, C2D provides both a characteristic one-dimensional spectra and a full datacube with all the spatial and spectral information for every component included in the fit. We show the basic steps of the C2D spectro-photometric fitting procedure, tests on mock datacubes demonstrating its reliability, and a first application of C2D to a sample of three early-type galaxies (ETGs) observed within the CALIFA survey. The resulting datacubes from C2D are processed through the PIPE3D pipeline obtaining both the stellar populations and ionised gas properties of bulges and discs. This paper presents an overview of the potential of C2D+PIPE3D to unveil the formation and evolution of galaxies.
The discovery of multiple stellar populations in Milky Way globular clusters (GCs) has stimulated various follow-up studies on helium-enhanced stellar populations. Here we present the evolutionary population synthesis models for the spectro-photometric evolution of simple stellar populations (SSPs) with varying initial helium abundance ($Y_{\rm ini}$). We show that $Y_{\rm ini}$ brings about {dramatic} changes in spectro-photometric properties of SSPs. Like the normal-helium SSPs, the integrated spectro-photometric evolution of helium-enhanced SSPs is also dependent on metallicity and age for …
We present a photometric analysis of 65 galaxies in the rich cluster Abell 1689 at $z=0.183$, using the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys archive images in the rest-frame $V$-band. We perform two-dimensional multi-component photometric decomposition of each galaxy adopting different models of the surface-brightness distribution. We present an accurate morphological classification for each of the sample galaxies. For 50 early-type galaxies, we fit both a de Vaucouleurs and Sérsic law; S0s are modelled by also including a disc component described by an exponential law. Bars of S…
Photometric and spectroscopic observations of the galaxy population of the galaxy cluster Abell 1367 have been obtained, over a field of 34 by 90 arcmin, covering the cluster centre out to a radius of about 2.2 Mpc. U, B and R broad-band and H alpha narrow-band imaging observations were carried out using the Wide Field Camera (WFC) on the 2.5m INT. J and K near-infrared imaging was obtained using the Wide Field Camera (WFCAM) on the 3.8 m UKIRT, covering a somewhat smaller field of 0.75 square degrees on the cluster centre. The spectroscopic observations were carried out using a multifibre spe…
Mid- and far-infrared (IR) photometric and spectroscopic observations are fundamental to a full understanding of the dust-obscured Universe and the evolution of both star formation and black hole accretion in galaxies. In this work, using the specifications of the SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) as a baseline, we investigate the capability to study the dust-obscured Universe of mid- and far-IR photometry at 34 and 70 $μ$m and low-resolution spectroscopy at 17-36 $μ$m using the state-of-the-art Spectro-Photometric Realisations of Infrared-selected Targets at all-…
Techniques to classify galaxies solely based on photometry will be necessary for future large cosmology missions, such as Euclid or LSST. However, the precision of classification is always lower in photometric surveys and can be systematically biased with respect to classifications based upon spectroscopic data. We verified how precisely the detailed classification scheme introduced by Siudek et al. (2018, hereafter: S1) for galaxies at z~0.7 could be reproduced if only photometric data are available. We applied the Fisher Expectation-Maximization (FEM) unsupervised clustering algorithm to 54,…
Multi-component modelling of galaxies is a valuable tool in the effort to quantitatively understand galaxy evolution, yet the use of the technique is plagued by issues of convergence, model selection and parameter degeneracies. These issues limit its application over large samples to the simplest models, with complex models being applied only to very small samples. We attempt to resolve this dilemma of "quantity or quality" by developing a novel framework, built inside the Zooniverse citizen science platform, to enable the crowdsourcing of model creation for Sloan Digitial Sky Survey galaxies.…
Improving distance measurements in large imaging surveys is a major challenge to better reveal the distribution of galaxies on a large scale and to link galaxy properties with their environments. Photometric redshifts can be efficiently combined with the cosmic web (CW) extracted from overlapping spectroscopic surveys to improve their accuracy. We apply a similar method using a new generation of photometric redshifts based on a convolution neural network (CNN). The CNN is trained on the SDSS images with the main galaxy sample (SDSS-MGS, $r \leq 17.8$) and the GAMA spectroscopic redshifts up to…
We extend the catalogue of two-dimensional, PSF-corrected de Vacouleurs, Sersic, de Vacouleurs+Exponential, and Sersic+Exponential fits of ~7x10^5 galaxies presented in Meert, Vikram & Bernardi (2015) to include the g- and i-bands. Fits are analysed using the physically motivated flagging system presented in the original text, making adjustments for the differing signal-to-noise when necessary. We compare the fits in each of the g-, r-, and i-bands. Fixed aperture magnitudes and colours are also provided for all galaxies. The catalogues are available in electronic format.
We present a new scheme, $\it{galtag}$, for refining the photometric redshift measurements of faint galaxies by probabilistically tagging them to observed galaxy groups constructed from a brighter, magnitude-limited spectroscopy survey. First, this method is tested on the DESI light-cone data constructed on the GALFORM galaxy formation model to tests its validity. We then apply it to the photometric observations of galaxies in the Kilo-Degree Imaging Survey (KiDS) over a 1 deg$^2$ region centred at 15$^\mathrm{h}$. This region contains Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) deep spectroscopic observa…
We present a catalogue of two-dimensional, point spread function-corrected de Vacouleurs, Sérsic, de Vacouleurs+Exponential, and Sérsic+Exponential fits of $\sim7\times10^5$ spectroscopically selected galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7. Fits are performed for the SDSS r band utilizing the fitting routine GALFIT and analysis pipeline PYMORPH. We compare these fits to prior catalogues. Fits are analysed using a physically motivated flagging system. The flags suggest that more than 90 per cent of two-component fits can be used for analysis. We show that the fit…

We exploit the synergy between low-resolution spectroscopy and photometric redshifts to study environmental effects on galaxy evolution in slitless spectroscopic surveys from space. As a test case, we consider the future Euclid Deep survey (~40deg$^2$), which combines a slitless spectroscopic survey limited at H$α$ flux $\geq5\times 10^{-17}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and a photometric survey limited in H-band ($H\leq26$). We use Euclid-like galaxy mock catalogues, in which we anchor the photometric redshifts to the 3D galaxy distribution of the available spectroscopic redshifts. We then estimate…

We present the study of nineteen low X-ray luminosity galaxy clusters (L$_X \sim$ 0.5--45 $\times$ $10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$), selected from the ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counters (PSPC) Pointed Observations (Vikhlinin et al. 1998) and the revised version of Mullis et al. (2003) in the redshift range of 0.16 to 0.7. This is the introductory paper of a series presenting the sample selection, photometric and spectroscopic observations and data reduction. Photometric data in different passbands were taken for eight galaxy clusters at Las Campanas Observatory; three clusters at Cerro Tolo…
We present catalogs of calibrated photometry and spectroscopic redshifts in the Extended Groth Strip, intended for studies of photometric redshifts (photo-z's). The data includes ugriz photometry from CFHTLS and Y-band photometry from the Subaru Suprime camera, as well as spectroscopic redshifts from the DEEP2, DEEP3 and 3D-HST surveys. These catalogs incorporate corrections to produce effectively matched-aperture photometry across all bands, based upon object size information available in the catalog and Moffat profile point spread function fits. We test this catalog with a simple machine lea…
We provide a method for estimating the projected density distribution $\bar{n}_2w_p(r_p)$ of photometric objects around spectroscopic objects in a redshift survey. This quantity describes the distribution of Photometric sources with certain physical properties (e.g. luminosity, mass, color etc) Around Cosmic webs (PAC) traced by the spectroscopic objects. The method can make full use of current and future deep and wide photometric surveys to explore the formation of galaxies up to medium redshift ($z_s < 2$), with the aid of cosmological redshift surveys that sample only a fairly limited speci…
Several observational studies and numerical simulations suggest that mergers must contribute to the evolution of galaxies; however, the role that they play is not yet fully understood. In this paper we study a sample of 52 double nucleus disk galaxies that are considered as candidates for a minor merger event. The luminosity of each of the nuclei and their relative separation are derived from a multi-component photometric fit of the galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical images. We find that the nuclei in most of the sources have projected separations $\leq$ 4 kpc. The ratio of nucle…
The properties of galaxies in the local universe have been shown to depend upon their environment. Future large scale photometric surveys such as DES and Euclid will be vital to gain insight into the evolution of galaxy properties and the role of environment. Large samples come at the cost of redshift precision and this affects the measurement of environment. We study this by measuring environments using SDSS spectroscopic and photometric redshifts and also simulated photometric redshifts with a range of uncertainties. We consider the Nth nearest neighbour and fixed aperture methods and evalua…
Gaia measures the five astrometric parameters for stars in the Milky Way, but only four of them (positions and proper motion, but not parallax) are well measured beyond a few kpc from the Sun. Modern spectroscopic surveys such as APOGEE cover a large area of the Milky Way disk and we can use the relation between spectra and luminosity to determine distances to stars beyond Gaia's parallax reach. Here, we design a deep neural network trained on stars in common between Gaia and APOGEE that determines spectro-photometric distances to APOGEE stars, while including a flexible model to calibrate par…
Line-intensity mapping (LIM or IM) is an emerging field of observational work, with strong potential to fit into a larger effort to probe large-scale structure and small-scale astrophysical phenomena using multiple complementary tracers. Taking full advantage of such complementarity means, in part, undertaking line-intensity surveys with galaxy surveys in mind. We consider the potential for detection of a cross-correlation signal between COMAP and blind surveys based on photometric redshifts (as in COSMOS) or based on spectroscopic data (as with the HETDEX survey of Lyman-$α$ emitters). We fin…
Noisy distance estimates associated with photometric rather than spectroscopic redshifts lead to a mis-estimate of the luminosities, and produce a correlated mis-estimate of the sizes. We consider a sample of early-type galaxies from the SDSS DR6 for which both spectroscopic and photometric information is available, and apply the generalization of the V_max method to correct for these biases. We show that our technique recovers the true redshift, magnitude and size distributions, as well as the true size-luminosity relation. We find that using only 10% of the spectroscopic information randomly…
We report the results of the first long-term (1990-2014) optical spectro-photometric monitoring of a binary black hole candidate QSO E1821+643, a low-redshift high-luminosity radio-quiet quasar. In the monitored period the continua and H$γ$ fluxes changed for around two times, while the H$β$ flux changed around 1.4 times. We found the periodical variations in the photometric flux with the periods of 1200, 1850 and 4000 days, and 4500 days periodicity in the spectroscopic variations. However, the periodicity of 4000-4500 days covers only one cycle of variation and should be confirmed with a lon…
